We chose this tile shop for our house remodel for two reasons: their massive variety, and Rafael. Rafael can basically design whatever you need. After we showed him some things we'd picked out and gave him some idea of what we were looking for, he'd go and find something even better. We wound up getting kitchen backsplash, and two bathrooms (shower, shower accent, mosaic, bathroom floor) worth of tile from them. There are a ton of tile shops in the area, but nowhere else was there nearly a fraction of what this place has. We found a beautiful blue tile for the bathroom that no other store came close to having, along with the most gorgeous mosaics and accent tiles to match. The downstairs shower accent wall tile in particular is something special: there is glitter that shines, along with gold accents (it was also accordingly quite expensive, hence limited to an accent strip). The prices here aren't the cheapest nor the most expensive; I would say don't come here expecting a great deal, but you can expect a huge variety, and if desired, Rafael's excellent design expertise. He is understandably quite popular, so calling ahead to schedule an appointment with him is a good idea. read more

I recently remodeled two bathrooms. I was dreading the process of looking for tile because too many choices tend to overwhelm me. I visited a few stores before I was fortunate to walk into American Tile and find Rafael. I had a little bit of an idea of what I wanted and explained it to Rafael. After what seemed like hours of looking at tile, I made a decision. Naturally, I struggled with my choice. Rafael sent me home with samples so I could make a confident decision. Even after I had made my decision, I was still questioning my choice but Rafael assured me that I would be happy with my decision. And he was right. The finished product is the bathroom with the wood look shower. When it came time to do the second bathroom, there was no question where I was going. I walked in and Rafael was there to greet me. This time I had an idea from which to work (the mosaic shell, sand and glass tile). I told him I wanted a subway tile for the shower and a tile that looked like sand. He walked right over to each and that was it. Easiest transaction I ever had!! You will not be disappointed with American Tile! I enjoyed working with everyone there, not just Rafael. Such a rude people.... Walk in the store and asked for a specific Marble that I wanted and asked for the price per square foot. The answer was: Yes we have it and what is your budget? I replied: What is your price? The reply was: What do we have bid to get your business. I replied: Need your price and I will let you know. He said 10 Dollars which I knew it is about 3 dollars above the competitors. I asked again: Is that your best price? He said : NO...!!!! I can sell it to you for $9.95 !!! They would not allow us to exchange, return or anything...what kind of retail store is this that you cannot exchange??? Complete and utter crooks. They are charging 2 times the price for granite tiles you can buy from other wholesalers and Wali Hairat is a rude, crooked and discourteous jerk. He has zero customer dealing skills and should never be in retail as he is a lying crook. He continuously lied to me about an order I placed and then was dilly dallying on the order and then told me to buy it somewhere else. Guess what? After shopping around for our specific marble tile we wanted from all those stone retailers on State College, we ended up at American Tile & Marble. We were immediately greet by Brad who provided quality customer service. We had a couple of prices from other retailers and Brad was able to not only match those prices but he beat them too. Do yourself a favor - DO NOT buy tile from here. If I could give this place ZERO STAR I would. There are a ton of other great tile places on State Street. Don't waste your time or money here for two reasons: #1 Their product is not what they claim it to be. Our sales rep sold us 98 square feet worth of Carrara white honed 6x12" tile and when we opened the boxes, HALF THE BOX WAS WHITE marble and HALF THE BOX WAS GREY marble. I don't mean that half of the total number of boxes was different colored marble tiles. I mean that IN ONE SINGLE BOX OF MARBLE, half of the stack was white, and half was grey. See attached pic for proof. #2 Their sales rep, Brad. Clearly, I did not read the other positive reviews because our sales rep was not Vanessa or Eric. Whatever you do, DO NOT give Brad your business. He is nice and pleasant when he wants to sell, dishonest and dodgy when there is a problem after the sale. Before I go into details, I just want to be clear on this one point: We understand perfectly that when buying natural stone tile there are variances and inconsistencies that exists within the stone. Furthermore, since it was a "special order," all $900 worth of this white/grey marble was nonreturnable, which we also understood perfectly when we paid. Rather than make a stink and demand that we return all of the marble, we sorted the grey tile from the white tile and decided to make the best of the situation: instead of tiling both bathrooms in white which was our original intention, we would tile one bathroom floor in the white marble and the other in the grey marble. Might as well stay positive over something we can't control, right? Back to the details -- When we discovered that the tile was two very different colors, we called Brad immediately to try and figure out a solution since we couldn't return it. Brad explained how natural stone has inconsistencies, blah blah blah, even though in this case it was a clear issue of two different colored tiles in the same box. My husband even posed the question: "Brad, would you put these two tiles in the same room in your home?" Of course, like anyone, Brad responded with "No." However, he had the audacity to suggest that we should have bought 25-30% overage -- not the standard 10% -- in order to compensate for the mixed-colored tiles that we had no idea about in the first place!! By sorting out the tiles, we needed more to compensate, so my even-tempered, happy-go-lucky husband very clearly, calmly and nicely told Brad to please have three additional boxes of tile ready at his store immediately so that we could pick it up when we needed to instead of waiting additional days for the special order timeframe. When I called Brad two days later to tell him that we were on our way to pick up the three boxes, he said that there was no way he could get the tiles because his distributor doesn't work on Saturdays and proceeded to blame my husband saying that my husband never told him to order the additional three boxes. Needless to say, I was pretty shocked. Not only because Brad lied to me but also because his demeanor immediately changed. He went from "Brad, The Nice Salesman," to "Brad, The Jerk," talking over me and blaming my husband instead of helping me solve the problem. Shouldn't that be part of a good sales person's job -- to help?? An honest sales person, yes. Despite the fact that our General Contractor and I heard firsthand my husband telling him so, Brad vehemently denied this request, deflected the blame, and made a simple situation waaaay more complicated and unpleasant than it ever needed to be. My husband and I are reasonable, honest and respectful people (and customers). But did we lose it? Absolutely. We did. As you can imagine, we were livid. Had we known that American Tile and Marble 1) sells boxes of marble tile with different tile colors in them; 2) displays tile samples not indicative of their actual product; 3) choose not to disclose such an important fact to their customers when giving said customers their sales pitch; and 4) expects their customer to spend more money in order to compensate for the store's own error, we would've never set foot in this place. Ever. I normally only write positive reviews on yelp because what's the point of always being negative, and good/happy experiences almost never get written up. However, in this case, I can't follow my own Code. What they've done is just wrong. Take it from me - don't buy from this place. You'll be much happier going somewhere else just a few doors down. read more

I worked with this company on 3 separate projects. One major floor tile project, one kitchen backsplash tile project and a small carpet restretching project. The first 2 projects went very well. We are very happy with the tiles we selected, the installation process, the installers and our experiences with Wali and Vanessa were great. The quality of the tile installation was excellent!! We had such a positive experience with American Tile on the first 2 projects that I didn't have to think twice about hiring them to do the final and smallest job of the 3 which was restretching our carpet (5 rooms at bout 1,500 square feet). The job was completed but sadly with some issues. I felt the price I had agreed to pay was too high for the work which was actually completed. Fortunately, Moe, the owner, immediately stepped in to rectify the situation. Moe proved to me that American Tile and Marble take customer service very seriously. Moe gave me the choice to pay whatever I felt fair for the job even if it was nothing at all. I was not looking to get out of paying so I paid them what I felt was fair for an hour and a half of work.
