I recently hired American Van Lines for a cross-country move from Los Angeles to Chicago, and I'm disappointed by the services. I would NEVER recommend, not even to my enemies!!! Set-up was easy, the call was great, which led me to high expectations. However, once the pickup date arrived, things took a turn for the worse. Initially, the driver was pleasant, but the person helping him was someone he had never worked with. Only one person was scheduled for the move, which was insufficient as the driver was busy tagging & inventorying items. The helper asked for a soda, which I agreed to, but then proceeded to help himself to my fridge. He then began taking items from our second-floor apartment to the truck, all the while being clumsy and careless. I requested that he handle our items with care. No more than ten minutes later, I saw him drop our dresser, and his response was simply, "my bad," without even an apology. I informed the driver; he didn't address the issue as our items continued to be loaded carelessly. Upon delivery, which was a day late from what the driver had initially told us, they brought in another person whom the driver had never worked with before. This new person was better and genuinely helpful. He even apologized to me for the way my items were packed, stating that whoever handled it was terrible and indifferent. Many of my items arrived damaged or completely broken. Fragile items that were clearly labeled were placed under boxes marked "heavy." Boxes were crushed, furniture was scratched and chipped, and one floor-length mirror was utterly ruined with the frame broken on all four sides. One item arrived bent, and when I mentioned it to the driver, his excuse was, "Well, it's flimsy." REALLY!?! That is the response you choose to give to your customer? He also dropped a box labeled "FRAGILE/GLASSWARE". His remarked was, "You should have packed them better." I opened the box to show him that I had packed it properly, in a glassware box.

The 5 stars is ONLY for Donna as she seems like the only competent employee of the company. Through the process Donna was empathetic, polite, communicative, and accountable. This is probably the worst experience with moving I've ever had. I contacted Colonial Van Lines to schedule a long distance move from Arlington, MA to San Marcos, CA. The representative was polite and sounded professional and knowledgeable. She assured me that Colonial Van Lines was NOT a broker but a legitimate moving company with their own fleet and told me to check DOT to confirm. I decided to move forward with them with as the mover and paid half of the invoice as requested. On 8/12/2024, another company named "Always Affordable Moving dba East Coast Van Lines" came to pick up my items, NOT Colonial Van Lines. You can read their reviews on Yelp and the Better Business Bureau. The next day, I noticed some surface damage done to my walls but decided to be understanding and ignore it. The real headache started on 9/3/2024 when "East Coast Van Lines" delivered my items to my new apartment in San Marcos. They charged me an extra $337 to load my items onto a smaller UHaul truck to deliver my items since they said they could not fit their primary truck into the apartment complex. This required confusing back and forth communication between the two companies and delayed the delivery by several hours. At this point, I was exhausted and wanted to get the delivery over with. During the move at the destination, I noticed the two movers were not at all professional compared the movers who loaded my items in MA. They dropped several boxes down the stairs, damaged my dining table, and scratched the wood floors in my new apartment by dragging furniture. I literally saw the mover try and carry a heavy box of clearly labeled dishware with one handle which ripped and sent the box down the stairs where you can clearly hear the sound of broken ceramic. I mentioned these issues to the driver and all he said was "file a claim". After witnessing how the mover was handling things, I told him to just leave the boxes and items at the top of the stairs so I could do the rest of the moving myself. I also decided to do the furniture assembly myself because I lost all faith in their competence. I also contacted the account manager that was assigned to my job from Colonial Van Lines to resolve these issues but she could not be reached on or after the delivery date, even after multiple phone calls. She also never returned my calls even though I left a voicemail. A week later I did a more thorough inspection of my inventory and realized that I was missing two boxes, one of which was coincidentally the most valuable box and contained my watches. I contacted customer service and they told me they could not locate the missing boxes and told me to just "file a claim". However, the claim process is laborious and the document requires the customer to agree to the following: "I understand that Colonial Van Lines, Inc. acting as my moving coordinator, bears no liability for any and all damaged/missing items sustained during the course of my relocation and agree to forever discharge said organization from responsibility for the actions of the carrier including but not limited to damaged/missing items." This appears to be a disingenuous attempt to have me formally agree to their negligence and lack of accountability. Moreover, they say they're only liable for 60 cents per pound per article which doesn't come close to covering the cost of the items that were lost. I find it absurd that you can just damage and lose a customer's items, casually tell them to file a claim, and then pretend it never happened. Please stay away from Colonial Van Lines as I feel they misrepresent their business by portraying themselves as a professional high-quality moving company but instead contracts out jobs to less reliable movers. P.S. I was contacted by Donna at the Resolutions Department and will update this review if an agreement is reached.

DO NOT BOOK WITH COLONIAL. They left us without movers on moving day, provided little to no…read morecommunication, and showed no urgency or accountability. We booked our move weeks in advance, completed all required paperwork immediately, and paid our deposit. Only afterward did we learn that Colonial doesn't actually perform the moves--they subcontract them to third-party movers. We were given a two-day pickup window (perhaps the first warning sign we failed to heed) and were told we'd receive confirmation of date 48 hours beforehand. That never happened. After repeatedly calling, we finally received a confirmed day less than 12 hours before the window. On moving day, we waited for the 9am call we were promised from the driver to advise when they anticipated arrival during our 9-1 window. That call never came. We checked in with Colonial multiple times. Each time, we were assured the crew was still expected by 1:00 p.m. At 1:00 p.m.--after we'd been waiting all morning--on a call we again had to precipitate, we were suddenly and nonchalantly told the movers would not be coming and couldn't arrive for three more days. This wasn't a minor inconvenience. We had driven 300 miles and taken an extra day off work because Colonial couldn't confirm our moving date in advance. We had packed our daughter's apartment, her lease was ending, and we were relying on pickup that day. Yet no one at Colonial seemed genuinely surprised, apologetic, or concerned about the enormous disruption they caused or the horrendous lack of communication. We received multiple conflicting explanations for the no-show, none of which explained why no one informed us sooner. One manager even told us that their moving dates are only "estimated" and customers should expect this to happen. This is completely unacceptable for a company people trust with major life events, and has not been our experience with any of our life's moves. When we asked to escalate the issue and requested help finding a solution, we were promised a callback that never came. I was on hold to follow up for 20 minutes before the office closed, at which time I was disconnected. We ended up scrambling to solve the problem ourselves, incurring more stress and expending more effort than we'd anticipated saving by booking a full-service mover. Colonial has since agreed to refund our deposit after repeated requests, but at the time of writing we still have not received it. If you need a moving company that communicates, honors its commitments, takes responsibility when something goes wrong, and most importantly WILL ACTUALLY MOVE YOU, please look elsewhere.

My experience with All My Sons moving:…read more Do not hire this company is the first thing that I would say for the following reasons. The first reason is the company's and its employees' failure to come to the site prepared. I had two phone calls the day before the two employees arrived to explain what I needed packed. I asked if I needed to provide any packing materials, and I was assured that the company would provide them, which turned out to be a lie. During the phone call, I explained that I have a sectional sofa, two matching recliners, two nightstands, a dresser, a dining room table and chairs, a sleeper sofa, and (1) an 82-inch TV, and (2) a 55-inch TV. The televisions were all wall-mounted and would need to be removed from the wall before packing. All of my furniture was going into a POD that would be picked up the following day. When the employees arrived, they did not have enough packing materials to complete the job, and they complained that they had been given the assignment at the last minute. These two employees placed all of my leather furniture into the pod without wrapping the items in anything that would protect the leather. I even heard one employee tell the other that they needed to hurry. See, employee one wanted to be done with the job in time to go watch his son's football game. In total, I had 4 televisions; however, the ten-year-old 40-inch television in the master bedroom only needed to be removed from the wall and left in the room. What I told the employees was this: "The 82-inch TV needs to be removed and packed." I walked into the master bedroom. This TV needs to be removed from the wall and left leaning against the wall; it's not going with the pod." I walked him upstairs, where each of the guest bedrooms had a fairly new 55-inch smart TV. Me, "I need both of these tv's removed from the walls and packed. I do have one TV box. I'll go tomorrow and get another TV box. WHAT WAS DONE: The employees removed all the televisions, placed one of the 55-inch TVs into the U-Haul box designed for such TVs; however, the TV was not wrapped in a blanket to protect it from damage, and none of the foam inserts were used. It was just left in the box leaning against the wall by the front door. After the employees were paid and quickly left, I discovered several things. The claim that the pod was full and could not hold any more boxes was a lie. With my aunt's help, I placed at least 8 more medium-sized U-Haul boxes into the pod. In addition, while packing those additional boxes, I noticed a small, wrapped item beneath the 55-inch TV box that was leaning against the wall. ALL My Sons hires' thieves: I unwrapped the TV and discovered that the old 40-inch TV, which should have been left in the master bedroom, was wrapped in a blanket, and the other 55-inch TV was gone. Yes, one of the thieves stole my 55-inch TVs and tried to hide his crime by wrapping the old 40-inch TV in a blanket and placing it behind the 55-inch TV, leaning against the wall. I had to fight to get my TV back, and the argument given to me was that I told the employee that I did not want the TV. My question will always be: what gave him the right to walk out of my house with anything, under the impression that because I said I didn't itemize one, he could take the more expensive item number too? The other issue I have is that the 55-inch TV was stolen on Friday and wasn't returned until Saturday. The TV was brought back wrapped in a blanket. The TV was unwrapped so that my sister could inspect it and plug it in to make sure it worked. After, she verified that the TV worked. The employee for All My Sons walked out with the blanket, so they did not re-wrap the TV. I give this company an F. The employee clearly stole the TV and was not even fired for theft; they just claimed this was a misunderstanding. Shelia C.
