My wife and I have been coming to Americana on a regular basis for the past 5 years. The last couple trips we have experienced poor service. In the most recent trip, our party of three ordered one drink a piece and burgers and we were there for 1.5 hours. Tables that were sat after us were served before us, despite the fact we made reservations. We love the food, although it was cool when it ultimately arrived at our table. I would like to continue to visit Americana with my wife and co-workers, but cannot justifiably do so with the service level we have recently received. read more

My husband and I came to Americana for opening weekend and we have been back several times since so they are definitely doing something right. The atmosphere is really great, very retro with a great vibe and energy. We have tried several dishes and my favorite so far is the red snapper- very unique. Americana never disappoints! The brunch there is superb - so many choices, so much food! Bottomless mimosas make any Sunday brunch just that much more wonderful. The only thing I noticed when we went there yesterday is that the grilled cheese station was somewhat hidden - it wasn't in the 2 rooms, but I saw people carrying grilled cheese sandwiches. So I went looking for it - and it was tucked away on the end of the bar. There was no sign or anything indicating this was the grilled cheese station - the only giveaway was a sandwich sitting on the bar, ready for pickup. So maybe either put the station someplace near the food, or at least clearly mark it. Othewrise, everything was wonderful - we left stuffed, as always. read more

Truly the highlight of our meal was our server...she was excellent. She accommodated our multiple questions willingly and graciously. The food was also very good! Came here for our 1 year wedding anniversary! We've been here once before and so far we've never had a bad experience. Our first time to Americana, we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, explaining the layout of the Saturday brunch buffet. Foodwise...The three of us found the cheese items (mac n' cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches) to be really good. The grilled cheese station was by far our favorite. Husband liked the chicken strips. My mother liked the cheesy hashbrowns. The rest was alright, but nothing to get excited about. Fajita mix was so-so. The desserts (plain brownies and chocolate chip cookies) were tasteless. This being a brunch buffet, I was looking forward to at least stellar cinnamon rolls or caramel rolls. Not there. Including an $8 tip, the three of us got out of there for $61.89 and felt it was overpriced for the quality of the food. Took my Mother here for the Mother's Day buffet. The food options were abundant and the food is not your typical buffet fare. The food is very elegant and flavorful. We enjoyed bottomless mimosas and wonderful service from our waitress. I will definitely dine here again when visiting Des Moines. read more

By far the best brunch around. Not just the typical rundown of eggs, stale pancakes, and greasy sausages. The fruit and salad is always fresh, the made-to-order grilled cheese is melty and amazing (try the Pizza one, my personal favorite) and so many other options I can't list them here. We did not do the bloody Mary or mimosa bar but they looked good and people seemed to have fun with it. The only complaint is the line for food is to long and slow and coffee price is kinda steep. Very crowded at noon on a Sunday. You have to wait in a slow line for food. The food was okay. Some things better than others. Was looking forward to the grilled cheese but they don't let it cook long enough so the cheese really doesn't melt. Lots of choices but wish the desserts were better. First impression was good; hip feel, polite staff, and an intriguing menu. We ordered two appetizers and an entree to split. The Scallop lollipops were very good, great texture and just enough spice. The Pulled Pork Crostini had good flavor, but was dry. A little sauce could have helped. The Americana Panini was the biggest disappointment. It had the potential to be good, but what we received was an Arugula sandwich, very little cheese. After sharing this with our server (when asked how it was) it was removed from our bill and we were thanked for our feedback. Our server was attentive, polite, and full of smiles. It was nice to have a server who seemed like she wanted to be there. Americana feels like the young restaurant it is, trying to fine tune it's menu. I want to like this place. It has great ambience and an interesting menu, but the food needs to get better. Bottom line? Worth a shot. I'll be back for a second try. read more

So pleased with the diverse menu at Americana! Living in DC has turned me into a bit of a foodie, so while visiting family in Iowa, I was pleasantly surprised to see such a spread on Americana's menu. My husband and I shared the Pomegranate Salad and three shared plates: BBQ Pork Sliders, Thai Tacos, and Seared Tuna. While my dad enjoyed a traditional slab of prime rib, my mom and sister tried the Pan Seared Salmon and the Iowa Chop; all of us were more than satisfied with our selections. But wait there's more! Dessert was delicious and creative. Between the group we shared the Bacon Brownie Sundae and Turtle S'mores - so rich, but so tasty. And finally, I must note my new favorite cocktail, the Moscow Mule, which Americana served up in style in the requisite copper mug. Went here for a work lunch so we had a limited menu. I got the burger and so did a couple of my coworkers. We all had asked for cheese and we had to have them take them back to add cheese. But that was really the only thing. It was a large group so I imagine small things like that are likely to occur. The burger had good flavor and was cooked perfect. The fries were pretty good too. They had just the right amount of crispiness. The atmosphere was nice as well. The waitress was attentive and nice. I may try again when it's not a work lunch and the menu is not limited. We had a reservation for 2 @ 5pm on a Saturday. We probably didn't need the reservation because it was relatively empty when we arrived. So, I was surprised when the hostess sat us right next to the server station and kitchen door. Not what I would consider prime real estate. However, any concerns I might have had ended there. Our server was prompt and courteous. Our food was perfectly timed! We shared the bacon and brussels for a starter and they were wonderful! We went here on a Sunday morning for brunch, we did not have a reservation so we were seated in the "non reservation section", which means bar area. While the food was really good and I loved the decor, the wait staff were a bit pretentious. Our waitress was not very pleasant and just put our drinks down and walked away. She did not seem interested in if we needed anything until it was about time to pay. Needless to say, I was paying so she did not get much of a tip. read more

Each time I've gone to this place I've been treated shitty -- to the point that I won't step foot in this place again. I've never said that before, especially if a business is local. I've read owner comments on here and FB, and I think there's been plenty of improvements since I went there. That's good. The owner is listening. But, when a place treats patrons so offensively, it's hard to try it one more time. If you're in your 20s or 30s this is the place for you. If you're over that, I heavily caution you. I was visiting Des Moines from Saint Paul, MN and hit up this trendy-looking establishment. I ordered "The Pomegranate" salad and was thoroughly disappointed from every perspective with it. First of all, it should be called "The Strawberry" as there was a pile of mushy, not fresh, strawberries in the middle and nothing that resembled pomegranate in the entire dish! Secondly, it cost $14 and I added chicken for $3 additional, which in my mind $17 is a pretty hefty price for an undesirable salad. The chicken was about 2 ounces worth (not near enough in my opinion) and was cold when I received my dish. Finally, they put far too much goat cheese on the salad, I'm guessing an entire cup's worth! I ended up moving this to the side and not eating it. Needless to say, I was thoroughly disappointed with my experience. read more
