Wat other grocery store can you find ready-made tamales that are heated-up and ready to eat? This store has a very small cafe located in the back, and they serve various types of Spanish dishes. They only had one tamale de maiz and I scooped it up to take home. The main reason why I came here today was that it was Fijita Friday and it only costs $10 per pound. It's not prepared fajitas but instead the actual fajita meat. I also purchased a pound of Chorizo Cabal which was half the price of the fajita meat. I bought dry white cheese for $7 and opened it at home and found mold on the top. I stopped by the store to do an even exchange and the manager told me that they can not exchange it once it is opened. I told him that next time, I will have to open the cheese in front of him to check it before buying it. Even Giant employees agree to even exchanges without a receipt. purchased today Morcilla Negra, NY Strip and Chorizo Argentino. After cooking and serving these items we were struck by a very foul odor, reminiscent of stables or even cow manure. We don't know if the smell came from either sausages or meat but we've noticed that the flavor in the argentine sausage had changed, low salt. But that's not the worse that happened. I immediately called the Fairfax store and asked to talk to the General Manager in order to warn them immediately about the possibility of contamination. The person that answered said that the GM was not in and after I asked for the GM's name he hanged up on me. No one answered until the fifth try when a woman said that there was no one in charge. This is unacceptable treatment of a very concerned customer. I will get in touch with the health authorities of Fairfax County. read more

Cleanliness 0 stars. Unique items to purchase 3 stars. Overall, 2 Stars. I lke coming here because I can pick up ingredients I've never seen before and try out different sort of dishes. I love to cook so finding unique ingredients is important. They specialize in food, condiments, ingredients from central and south america, brazil, the caribbean and africa too. Mostly Latin American. They sell farofa, caricoa beans, pao de queijo (although they used to sell a better brand with the cheese already mixed in, the one they sell you have to add grated cheese on your own, sucks.), plus Guarana soda and a few other items from brasil, not enough though. I am also a fan of Peruvian food and they sell a huge assortment of Peruvian spices and indgredients. The owner may be from Peru because it takes up an entire ailse. Nice. So I can pick up the sauces, quinoa, and the crunchy corn snack, amongst tons of other things. They also sell unique cuts of meat which the butcher will cut for you right there. Fish available as well. My problem with this place, which is a huge problem, is the cleanliness issue. When you walk in, you are overwhelmed by the smell of bleach in the air. There is a real butcher in the back, so I guess they bleach mop a lot. Another gross thing, they have a little counter where you can order sweet breads, coffee and snacks, pupusas, tamales (the tamales in the front by the register taste better than the one's at the counter) and eat right there. There are a few stools to sit and a lady behind the couter preparing things. One day, I ordered a sweet bread and coffee, and decided to sit at at the counter to eat it. This area is not the cleaniest and I saw a roach crawling on the counter wher people eat. Cringe. No bueno. I just got up, left the rest of my food there and exited. That incident happened only one time in the years I've been going there. I only sat at the counter once, and I will never do that ever again. Other than that, this place is good for plantains, tomatoes, limes, cilantro, culantro, mint, cabbage in the small produce section. Meat is fine, dairy, and fresh bread rolls. Customer service is ok, not exceptional, just ok. My expectations here are low. I expect fresh cilantro, good plantains, seasonings, eggs and milk. That's it. This place really needs to step up the cleanliness...that's where they're lacking. The hand baskets are filthy. If I use them, I always line them with two plastic bags. They have not been washed in like forever. Yuck. read more

Had a horrible experience at the Fairfax store. Picked up a few candles and they checked out at a higher price than marked. I showed the price on the shelf to the cashier and he agreed, but he went to the rude manager on duty to authorize the refund for the difference. The manager refused to give the difference back and instead instructed the cashier to remove the sticker from the shelf right in front of my eyes saying someone had forgotten to change it! I said it was wrong for him to charge a different price than marked, and he shamelessly acknowledged that it was but couldn't give it at the marked price. Beware of this store. Watch out for price scamming. It is also dirty and smelly. read more

I was quite disappointed by this grocery store. I was trying to find my "Mi Pueblo" http://www.mipueblofoods.com/home/index.html near my place on the E. Coast. On a weekday afternoon, their produce section was pretty lackluster. Their bagged spinach was old. No fresh greens. The meat and poultry section was pretty pungent. The layout of the store just seemed confusing for me. I had to circle around couple of times to figure out where the item was located. Forget about a sales associate to help you. There were none except the lone cashier. I was able to pick up a few items while there. I will give a star for their website which does carry some interesting Latin recipes. read more

Great place to find exotic fruits and vegetables (like culantro, nopales, colored potatoes, exotic corns, etc), great products from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, etc. Several exotic beans, flours, sodas, spices, chorizos and cheeses. Ripe plantains are awesome, ready to be used in your recipe cause you don't have to buy them green and had to wait some days. I can also find exotic cookies, snacks and juices. It is a little cramped but I love to go there anyway. read more

I'm brazilian and found some stuff here that I couldn't find in normal grocery stores, so that was pretty cool

I love the Americana Grocery, or as my wife and I informally call it, "the mercado." I appreciate the unique, latino items, especially produce (avocados, cilantro, peppers), bakery items, and cheeses. I also just like the atmosphere--it's a hometown grocery, albeit a bilingual one! But best of all? Their butcher shop. We have a habit of buying New York Strip steaks they cut right there in front of you. The price is right, they're fresh, and we can have them cut really thick ones for grilling. Finally, these are about the nicest folks you can imagine. It's a real treat to shop there. read more

A dream come true for people looking for ingredients for Mexican food. This store is clean, well organized and well stocked. The people are very nice. They have every kind of dried chile, spice, frijol, queso, crema, Knorr Suissa product, coffee and fresh produce the Mexican cook could ever want. (hard Persian limes at Shoppers, 2 for $3; good, juicy Mexican limes at Americana, 10 for $1.) The bakery is to die for if you crave real bollios. The carniceria has a great selection, especially chorizo, even has milanesas ready to cook, and ceviche. I found everything I needed to make mole, including the three kinds of chile and the semillas, without having to go to another store. I also picked up some great, homemade Bolivian empanadas. The only things they didn't have, and I think they could probably get it if I asked, are dry pozole (which I won't need until fall, anyway) and machaca. read more
