Horrible. Bugs in my bed, when I got there they gave me the wrong key to my room I had to walk all the way back, and then when they gave me the right key they had a fire drill for 30 minutes. Me and my friends were miserable the entire stay. The food was absolutely DISGUSTING. The beds were so uncomfortable, and the pillows were wet... The next day when I was going in the shower I stepped on a cockroach!? I was MORTIFIED. And when I called to tell them they did nothing about it. Horrible customer service and care. Like many other reviews, this is more like a hostel, than an actual hotel. The noise is crazy, the yelling and screaming from ppl fighting is nuts. I paid a total of $240.00 a night for this place. It's a $49.00 a night place. My room was 6.5' x 12', that's it. Felt like a migrant shelter. Shared bathroom n kitchen, didnt use the kitchen but the bathroom was always dirty. Staff were polite and accommodating. The room was small, no private bathroom/shower. The attended the check to Cine put us in a room and I was close by the elevator or the stairs in the bathroom so I'll give her extra star for that. The twin beds were comfortable and the blankets or warm enough to keep us warm at night while we were running the AC that worked very well. I enjoyed watching the 2020 NBA playoffs on the decent size HD TV that was very clear unlike a lot of other hotel accommodations I've had in the past few weeks. The remote control was easy to figure out it wasn't a hassle. Even though the windows are dirty I haven't been to a place in New York City where there were clean windows so what I appreciate was the view looking outside the window which is a little bit of everything about New York. read more

One of the few places a regret staying in. The lobby and attendant is great but that's about it. Once you go to the halls and room you realize the mistake you've done. The Americana inn is the consequence of a society in decline, where profits squeeze out any last ounce of life out of a place. There is no attempt made to make you feel like this is a comfortable place to sleep. They are so cheap that they don't even provide a towel or clothes rack in the shared bathrooms. I didn't realize some hotels share restrooms like this; one sink, toilet & shower per restroom & there's 3 on every floor. Our shared restroom is dirty...used TP on floor Toilet yuk & shower hair! Gross! No floor mat for shower so waters on floor No hand dryer or paper towels! Bare minimum! There's no AC to cool your room this time of year - November 5 temps in 60 & sunny!!! Our only option to open the window with no screen to an extremely busy street that drivers honk their horns every 10 seconds & garbage trucks bang around all hours of the night! No lie, leaves me wondering? Are most hotels in New York within my price range like this?!? $165 definitely a budget hotel! I admit it. I am not a good shopper when it comes to traveling. Especially booking a hotel. That's not something I do very often as I always manage to crash at my family's/friends'. Due to the conflict with my friend's schedule in NYC, I decided to book a hotel. I found a wicked cheap deal not too far from Times sq. Without hesitation, I clicked, clicked, clicked... Completed the transaction. After the purchase, I *finally* wondered "Why is it so cheap?" which I should've asked myself before the purchase. And I noticed the part "Bathroom is shared". "F*****k!!" I was terrified. I immediately pictured 'the worst bathroom in the world" in Trainspotting. But.... My god, they were clean. Spotless. Always. And it never smelled funny. Although it was shared, I never had to wait for the bathroom. There were plenty of it on each floor. Location is great. This is one of the perfect places to stay when traveling to NY. Not only is it smack down a couple blocks away from Times Sq. but it's accessible to a lot of attractions, subway stations, and eateries. Me and my friend had a good time here. We spent about $530 for three nights which includes: multiple bathrooms in the hallway, a small kitchen for the floor, and a balcony which is perfect. We automatically rolled up the blinds and opened up the window to climb outside and just watch the city lights and cars drive by. It's a beautiful sight. The hotel is clean and well secured. In order to come inside you'd have to ring a bell and then doors open up. Also when taking the elevator up, it always stops at 2nd floor for security purposes (the employee just says hi and takes a good look). They also have a room service cleaning person who does re-stock and clean the rooms if needed to. read more

Where to begin... Unclean floors, one bathroom per floor or at least corner, giving the whole hostel vibe. $14 "mandatory" charge that probably should've just been on the room price. Room is tiny, AC blows right on to the bed making it uncomfortable to be in the room while it is on. Card didn't always work on the door. Small bed that looked like it hasn't been changed since the hotel began running. Smell of weed in various locations of it, and definitely the last thing from being sound isolating rooms. And for bonus: fire alarm went off at around 7am that they couldn't turn off for a good hour. Then decided to test it at around 9am again. Could not have had a worse stay. Those prisons in Sweden look nicer than the rooms here. Seriously, spend like $50 more and get something worth sleeping in. read more

Okay so 2 stars for location only. This is a very budget focused hotel and you get what you pay for. The room itself was fine - clean, small but just enough to sleep comfortably and then be on your way. Except that it is SO LOUD. Major drawback from the location. It sounded like there weren't even windows. I mean I expected some noise but I didn't expect to be able to hear people's conversation right below me. The noise from the traffic is awful. The walls are just incredibly thin and useless. Like I said though, it's no frills no nonsense literally just a place to sleep. But good luck sleeping.... I stayed here in January on a solo trip to the city. I've stayed in a few other lower-star hotels so I'm used to bare-bones and was unafraid of the shared bathroom concept. Some say it's a hostel, but having stayed in hostels all over Europe, I highly disagree. The rooms are TINY, as to be expected, but warm, private, and clean. There is a sink, closet, and TV (although no cable as advertised). The bed is not comfy or uncomfy, it just sort of "is". Service at the desk was great and the building is very secure in what used to be a very (and now is just a moderately) seedy neighborhood near Times Square. The shared bathrooms are plentiful on each floor so you don't have 30 people using one. My best guess is maybe 3-5 rooms using one bathroom, and that's assuming the rooms are occupied. I give Americana 4 stars because I had a great experience and I would come back, but I got an insane deal and when I look now the prices are outrageous. Definitely don't pay more than $100/nt for a single. You can do better elsewhere. My visit was cheaper than that, so it was worth it. Also, I know I'm not in the city to watch TV, but if you say you'll have cable, have cable. I had to watch Maury re-runs in my drunken post-party pizza-shoveling stupor. read more

I stayed here recently and it was decent, but definitely a budget hotel. When booking I was in a rush and did not notice that there are shared bathrooms. Having stayed at hostels in Europe and Latin America I am used to this but it could be a deal breaker for some people. The location is perfect, it's close to both Times Square and Herald Square which provides easy access to many subway lines. It's also walking distance to many nice restaurants, bars and clubs. The shared bathrooms where very clean. The room was small, typical Manhattan style on a budget. The room had a sink, closet, and TV. The mattress was okay and the pillows were okay. Yes it is on a busy road that can be loud but most hotels in Midtown Manhattan are like that. You have to pay more money for a room in the area that would have double panes windows to dampen the street noise. I would stay here again. read more

I was clean and nice, in a great location, and was the cheapest place that we found in New York this wasn't a hostel. Bathrooms are shared but they are also very clean and well kept. Me and my friend visited NYC between March 24 to April 4 , 2014, all the way from Stockholm. We wanted to find a safe and clean accommodation that did not cost a lot, as you usually spend most of your time outdoors. After careful researching online we received a great price from Americana Inn . Getting to the hotel from JFK was surprisingly easy with a cost of $ 7 per person. F -line took us all the way to Bryant Park 40th Street 6 avenue , where we could easily walk with our suitcases to the 38th street 6 avenue, to the hotel. People on the subway were very friendly showing us direction, no need of booking an expensive cab or shuttle. The hotel was very small and boutique style building with 24 hour staff support, who were very nice and friendly as soon as we needed help/advise. The rooms were small and charming, comfortable beds,clean and safe . We were a little worried at first that it would only be a toilet on each floor (total 3 floors) where we would have to queue with others. Surprisingly , it was a fresh bathroom after every 3rd room, so on one floor there were 5 bathrooms, wonderful: = ) They also cleaned our rooms everyday and it was warm. Best location in NYC where you are close to everything, we walked everywhere. We felt very safe leaving our suitcases and expensive gadgets that we both had with us from home and that we bought in NYC. It is important to know that you will come back to a quiet , fresh and safe hotel after hours of sightseeing. I heartily and truly recommend this hotel if you want to invest minimally in your accommodation ( stay calm , safe, fresh , friendly service and lots of bathrooms) and invest a maximum of discovering NYC ( food and shopping ). Love this place! It's where I'll stay for all quick trips. It's right in Midtown so the location is perfect. The staff is friendly and the hotel is very clean. Most people are turned off by the idea of communal restrooms but they are individual restrooms. It is not like a dorm with multiple stalls and showers, it's like being at home where you can go in, lock the door, and use the restroom and shower and take your time getting ready. Also, there are multiple restrooms on each floor so every time I needed a restroom, there were multiple open. Would definitely recommend this place. Better than I expected, but it's definitely not luxury digs. Clean rooms, comfy/cozy beds and impressively clean bathrooms, considering they are shared per floor. The water pressure in the showers was a bit low, and there were some clogged toilets on my floor, but overall I was pretty impressed (when I read that the bathrooms were shared I was extremely worried, but happy to be proven wrong). Great night's sleep at this place, which is all I really wanted. No wifi, no carpet, no breakfast, and no parking. Also not convinced it's really a deal ($118 with tax/fees for one Friday night, in a twin-bed room... seems extremely steep). But it's only a short walk from Times Square and Chelsea and subway stations, and it felt pretty safe in the area. Clean, room service and fresh towels everyday! Comfortable double bed with air conditioning heating. This place is central, just a block away from Bryant Park and have friendly staff at your service. Times Square is also within walking distance and what I like best is that, although the bathroom (always clean and stocked with shampoo and body soap) is shared, each bedroom has a sink and liquid handsoap which is very convenient if you don't feel like leaving your room but want clean hands ;) In-house entertainment also includes a Time Warner Cable equipped television... I had a good time watching great films on AMC and being updated on local news! The shared kitchen is equipped with a hot plate, sink and mini fridge, also kept clean. Very handy to keep milk fresh and chilled. Days when I was sick and couldn't run around the city much, there is a Pret a Manger (good food) below the hotel and Gong Cha (herbal tea), and a deli across the street, Starbucks a few blocks down. Being close to the Metro lines is also a plus for me when exploring the city. Will definitely stay again in Americana Inn for my next NYC visit! read more

My boyfriend at the time and I were spending our last day together before I went upstate and we needed a place to drop off our nice clothes since we were going to a nice place to eat. Naturally, we were also going to use the bed in lovely ways. :P We looked all over 34th street and they were all too expensive for my taste so I looked on expedia and this was pretty cheap - I think about 90 for a room, but the bathrooms are shared. There's a sink and mirror in the room though! We made our way to Americana and we were sketched out from the exterior, but the rooms were actually really nice and clean, but small. Didn't matter though. They let us have a room without reservations and before check-in time. They didn't seem like judgmental people - I mean...two young people getting a room in the middle of the day? lol You can pretty much hear things going out in the hallway and the room next door, but that's fine. We checked out that same night so I wouldn't know how it is at night. For the price, it is really good considering it is near 34th street and 42nd street - shopping and tourist stops! They also have these little cards that'll save you money on shopping and tourist places at the front desk. It's definitely a lot cleaner than how it looks on the outside. It's a good hotel for what it's worth. You actually have to ring the doorbell to get into the building. It look like it would be an apartment building actually, although it does have a small awning outside. It's easy to miss though. The 2nd floor is where the lobby is. I thought the staff was friendly. You can choose between the tiniest elevator or take the long flight of stairs, your choice. (I don't recommend the stairs if you're drinking, the steps are pretty narrow and there's a turn in them). On each floor there's a bathroom that's shared with everyone, and a kitchen that's actually in a closet. I'm not kidding. They do provide an ice machine - incase you partiers needed to know that. The bathroom has a sink, but so does your room. Like I said, the room is good for what it's worth. It's just a bed, a nice tv in there, with a closet and a sink. That's all you get out of it. It's not 5 star, but it's definitely perfect location for tourists on a budget. read more

Great location and very nice staff, but bad condition of the actual hotel. There is black mold in the shower and the beds are small and uncomfortable. There is no curtain behind the blinds so the light comes in. The bathroom is a shared bathroom down the hall like a dorm room. The hair dryer didn't work in one bathroom, and the shower in the other the temperature would change from hot to freezing. As long as you know what you're getting, and aren't expecting a lot (or just won't be in your room much), the Americana Inn is just fine. I stayed here for four nights last week, and while it was a bit jarring at first, it wound up being an okay place to stay. The benefits: It's VERY affordable compared to the rest of the area, and the location is fantastic. If you're looking for a place in midtown Manhattan that won't break the bank, this is a solid option. The "no bathroom in every room" thing is a little odd at first, but it isn't like there's one toilet or one shower on every floor. There's one full bathroom for every four or five-room cluster, and the one near my room on the fifth floor was well-maintained. The internet is pretty fast (at $5.95/day, it's not overly expensive), and my bed was pretty comfortable. The negatives: Yep, the rooms are really small, and there's plenty of noise coming from the street. No air conditioning could be a big problem in the summer (although last week, there were no issues), and whatever you do, do NOT buy soda from the vending machine in the lobby. I purchased a Diet Coke, and it expired...in January...of LAST YEAR. Gross. Thankfully, the staff gave me a refund. All told, the place isn't perfect, and if there are certain amenities you really want (or if you're a light sleeper who's easily kept awake by street noise!), you should probably look elsewhere. Still, for the rate that it charges and the location it's in, the Americana Inn is an OK option. read more

The stairs are extremely narrow and steep. It's really dangerous to walk through the stairs. And the manager at the front desk is not friendly and nice at all. The hotel was acceptable if you understand that you get what you pay for. The shared bathroom was an inconvenience but it was fairly clean. The room was extremely tiny with one double bed, a sink, and a TV. It's noisy but it didn't interrupt our sleep. The room is fine if all you plan to do is sleep there. My sister and I found cheap flights to New York, and while planning our 6 day 5 night trip out there, I did some extensive research. Based on the website, pictures, and good reviews, I decided to book with Americana Inn. It is in a fantastic location, a couple of blocks from Times Square and a lot of other attractions. We found a great deal, and only paid $75 a night. For this incredible deal, we were expecting a hostel, especially when noting the "shared bathrooms". Instead we were greeted with a very plush lobby, and a very nice concierge. Our room was small, but we didnt need anything grand. Everything was very clean, and we enjoyed having a flat-screen TV as well as a private sink and mirror in our room. The bed did dip awkwardly when we lay on it, but was comfortable enough for us to pass out on in exhaustion at the end of each day. When I think of shared bathrooms, I picture dorm style showers and toilets. On the contrary, there are about 4-5 private bathrooms on each floor, much in the style of a bathroom in a home. Because they were shared, I would have liked to see toilet seat covers, but all in all everything was kept very clean. The only morning I had a problem with the bathrooms was when I went to take a shower and had to try three different ones before I got hot water. However my sister never had this problem. I would recommend requesting a room away from the street, we did sleep with earplugs a majority of the time due to the traffic noise. We very much enjoyed staying here, and for our first trip to NY, was perfect for our needs! Super simple but it has everything you need. This was my first time staying at a place with a shared bathroom but luckily it was next door to our room and it wasn't bad at all. You do have a sink in your room which makes it nice. We had a street view room and there was activity going on all through the night... Construction, Cars honking, Trash Trucks... It was so loud we had thought the window was open all night. Would recommend this place as long as you get an inside room. The parking garage is conveniently across the street which was perfect since we had rented a car. read more

When I'm in New York, my goal is not to spend a lot of time in my hotel room. Basically I just need a clean, quiet place to sleep and shower in the morning. My other criteria are being centrally located and not insanely expensive. The Americana Inn was ideal. Small rooms that reminded me of college dorms. An easy walk from Penn Station. Shared bathrooms, that were clean. Very quiet, well insulated form most city noise, and I never heard noise from the other guests. Good value for what it is. Those who complain there are shared bathrooms need to do better research. Located in a great spot for sightseeing it's a warm place to sleep. That being said, they really ought to get more windows that are double paned because the noise on the street is pretty loud because you're right on 6th ave. the twin bed was surprisingly cozy and the room was pretty clean. They have a place to store luggage too if you arrive before check in. If you're like me and have a thing about germs, I'd run to the pharmacy nearby for cheap flip flops to wear in the shower. For NYC and this location the money is worth it. You shouldn't be doing anything in your hotel except sleeping anyways. All of the staff is friendly and helpful! But....We didn't realize until we got there that it is shared bathrooms! Not quite a "college dorm" style, there are 3/4 individual bathrooms (each with a sink, bathtub/shower, conditioner, soap, toilet, and a mirror) on each floor for the floor residents to share. Overall the bathrooms were pretty clean, and there was always at least 1 available! It just wasn't made known BEFORE we booked our stay. Also another downside is there is NO air conditioning, we stayed here during the summer so it was a slight issue, not quite sure if they have heating in the winter- i'd sure hope! Overall, you pay for what you get it, it was a cheap option with a few downsides! But a plus side is: it's only a couple blocks from Times Square!! read more
