I stopped here on the way to the local Shaw's. It was my first visit to an America's Food Basket. I found it a bit claustrophobic, both in the small tight parking lot in the small plaza and in the narrow aisle space inside. They were a smaller store, so they made the best use of their space to fit as much in as possible. Some unique things I noticed, however, were some Latin specialties, and a nice seasoning section in a cap end, where one could buy a smaller portion for a single recipe or as needed. I want to say scathing things about this place, but I can't completely knock it for what it is. They cater heavily to the Central and South American crowd -- hence the AMERICAS' in its name -- but that isn't what makes it awful. Yeah, the people are rude, yeah, you can't find a lot of stuff that you would at other grocery stores, yet I keep coming back for lack of other options. Their selection is adequate and the prices are good. If you can't find what you're looking for here, go elsewhere. If you're looking for produce, AFB is where it's at. Much fresher than Nat's or Stop & Shop. Negatives: THE CUSTOMERS. I feel like I have to bring brass knuckles to get people to move their baskets from blocking the aisle. So inconsiderate. Whenever I go here, I leave with an urge to shoot people. THE EMPLOYEES: It's kale. Not parsley. Not cilantro. Not lettuce. I literally waited 3 minutes for the cashier (stoned) to find the price for kale. Had I known the Spanish translation for kale I would have provided it. I've been overcharged many times because the cashier didn't recognize the produce. Limes look like avocados? Really?! THE BAGGING. Who, I ask, WHO puts one item in each bag?! Thanks for giving me trash bags for the next month. Wasteful and unnecessary. When it comes to service, you get what you pay for. Slum-quality in the slum. You've been warned. Roche Brothers is your best bet if you're in Roslindale and want a balance of reasonable prices, good selection, and good service. read more

GROSS. The store smelled and there was a loud buzzing going on when I was in there. And it was not bad music. Just bad white noise. Something in the joint was broken. Also, the store is small and the aisles are narrow. And when I went in on a weekend, it was so bad. The smell was like soppy, sloppy, soggy wet dog. Not a good smell when you want fresh food. I like to live with an open mind. Unless there are some major changes though, I won't shop here. Sad, I tell you, just sad. Its too bad b/c its closeby. I usually go to the America's Food Basket in Randolph and it is much better than this location. I like it due to the large selection of international foods and amazing meat selection but this store is a mess. For some reason, many aisles have displays in front of displays. This makes no sense to me and makes the already cluttered and small aisles even harder to make your way through. Forget social distancing here - you just can't do it. There's also no hot food items like at Randolph. They have video game machines which are positioned right where people are coming and going with carts so I'm not sure how anyone would play them without being in the way. Cool idea though. Lines were slow and we unluckily witnessed some sort of dispute where a man started yelling and using every word in the book to express his anger at being racially profiled (no idea but that's what it sounded like he was complaining about) so we couldn't wait to escape. Definitely much different than the one in Randolph, I won't be returning. read more

I wish they had a 12 items or less lane- I spent extra time there with just 2 items to purchase while the woman in front of me had a full carriage. I came here to do a quick food shop with a friend of mine. This is primarily a market that caters to Latino and other ethnic people. The market does carry all the other staples that any other supermarket would carry but they also carry all sorts of foods catered to the ethnic customer base that they have. The shelves are well stocked and the prices are cheap. The meat looks good and the prices are very low compared to the chain supermarkets most of us are familiar with. The only major disappointment I had was the three solicitors inside entrance/exit area of the store trying to sell pots and pans. They were a real pain in the ass. They reminded me of the sales people from Bob's Discount Furniture in Dedham. I almost told them to go apply for work there. read more

AMERICA'S FOOD BASKET LOWEST STAR RATING: So, I got off the bus from work and wanted to just get a bag of chips by the counter at AMERICA"S FOOD BASKET in Hyde park and was told that I had to check my bag...Really??? (like I would leave my personal belongings with anyone in there). Since my ride had not arrived yet, I went to see the supervisor because the manager was no where to be seen and explain. Again was told I could not. This time I saw out of the corner of my eye the security guard indicating "no"... How SAD. I should know better not to go in a place when you enter an establishment and see "The Larry, Moe and Curley Security Services" having to wear a gun. If there are issues there, you should hire a "Real" Police Officer to do a detail. That's fine. The next time I need to buy anything, I will think twice before I decide to go into America's Food Basket. I will wait and go an extra 5 blocks and go to Shaws, Star Market, or Stop and Shop before I go there ever again. I felt like was treated like a thief and bullied by a power hungry security guard and supervisor. AFB, You lost my business for your security guard's and supervisor's inability to make a respectful decision. I am Disgusted! IF THERE WAS EVER A NEGATIVE STAR RATING, I WOULD CHOOSE IT! This grocery store establishment is showing to be grossly uninvested in their customers. It is apparent that most, if not all their customers make part of the voiceless and clearly without representation. No way a Shaw's Market, Stop & Shop, or Roche Brothers would operate in such gross disregard for customer service or equipment. I took the opportunity walk in and make a purchase for my elderly parents, I was astonished at the quality of the meats. Where the meats are stored for customer access...had rust all over the meats, the meat racks and they had streaks of blood on the outside of their plastic Reynolds wrap. I cannot imagine what the behind the scene operations must be if the areas of the general public are in such poor condition. The areas are grossly outdated, and without care. I ultimately went to the frozen isle and got some frozen vegetables. They were excessively overpriced sadly. City of Boston Public Health should inspect this establishment without a doubt. Having a monopoly of ingredient selections (of the Caribbean) does not permit such establishment to show gross disregard for their disenfranchised customers in which they serve. The cashier refused to separate meat packages from vegetables, said I on can get get one grocery bag, even after I requested to purchase more than one bag, said I would have to speak to a manager. I've never encountered such blatant lack of regard for a grocery store customer. Simply allow for a reputable grocery store to provide sufficient services. AFB should be removed from Boston neighborhoods. Sad to have gone through that especially while a state of emergency was in effect. read more

Fresh produce, fresh meat. Meat is cheaper than Stop & Shop or Shaw's. However other products tend to be more expensive that other supermarkets like Oreos/Ritz/, baby food, etc. You can find many ethic foods from Central/South America and the Caribbean. Make sure to check expiration dates on products!!!! Isles are narrows and if you go on weekends, it's extremely busy unless you go before 10am on Sundays or around 8pm on weekdays. read more

The Hyde Park store is my main supermarket. Excellent selection of fruit, (example: 3 types of pears, 4 apple varieties, many choices of hot peppers) vegetables, mangos, plantains, other produce for the Latino market. Galleta brands, Goya soda, but also Ben&Jerry's ice cream, Oreo cookies, standard brands. Friendly cashiers, not do-it-yourself checkout. A lot of store brand products, good quality in my experience. This facility is not clean nor is it healthy...it smells musty and the shelves have mice dropping on them. I purchased bread and saw next to the bread which was listed as fresh a molded apple core next to it. While packing the bread was the apple core not found by someone or was the bread not fresh...what came first the fresh bread or the spoiled fruit???? The facility is not clean the floors just grimy. If you do not have to go in save yourself and your family. The workers do not care where they work and clearly the management do not care how clean the facility is. EWWWWW read more

I feel compelled to write them a review because the ones that are listed are old and perhaps that's why they're so negative. I didn't experience any of the things these people did. The place does not smell first of all. Parts of the store may have smells that are different than American only supermarkets and that's because they are selling things that are not as packaged or that are different. It's like going into a traditional Asian supermarket. This supermarket carries a huge selection of products that people from south of the border cook with and like. It reminds me of the now defunct (thanks to yuppy Whole Foods) Hi Lo Supermarket in JP, but smaller - hence, why it can feel very crowded - so, don't go on a Saturday. There are also regular American products. The thing that I would tell the owners of America's Food Basket is to invest on new freezers and other appliances. The ones they have tend to be old and well-used. But the floors are clean, the place is bright, and the selection is very good. I even saw things that I've never seen, like quail eggs! The staff was friendly and helpful (I needed to find Spanish turron and they walked me to it). So, if you are not snooty, if you are comfortable with people who are not like yourself, if you have patience and don't expect American style everything, then this is a place to see and experience. read more

Terrible place! Experience an altercation with the security officer while picking up money for a Western Union transaction. Call corporate and they stated that it's nothing they can do because the store is privately owned, contacted the store and no one will answer my calls or return my calls. Already been in contact with the police department and I guess I have to handle it that way. Unfortunate because I've never experienced anything like this before ever. Is that okay to have to go to the store and it has your employees not want to answer a question, and then escalate the situation by calling the customer stupid in Spanish. Once the security officer came over all I stated all I wanted wad my money and I will be leaving the store. He then grabbed my arm causing me to dropmy wallet ,in use excessive force to get me out of the store. All while I was just asking to get my wallet and asked his name which he replied I did not need to know. read more
