    Mango margarita
    Marjorie P.

Taco Tuesday! Met our daughter who lives in Rhode Island here on a Tuesday night. Arrived just before 5, and we were asked if we had a reservation. Looking around the almost empty restaurant, I assumed the question was just part of their procedure. What a kitschy place. Decked out with day of the dead objects and even a gift shop. Taco Tuesday - all tacos half price for dine in. So it turned out to be a very tasty, inexpensive meal. 3 choices for type of taco you want with a protein. When my taco shell started falling apart, I asked our very nice sever for another. He brought back a couple of warmed up tortillas. Nice. My mango margarita was good. Not strong at all. Decent size. We shared dessert - cinnamon churros. The dipping sauces (chocolate & vanilla) - yum. At this point, I looked around the restaurant & noticed it was quite full. Now I understood the question asking if we had a reservation.

This lovely little place in downtown Westerly across the street from the United Theater is just the place to get your Mexican food on! I met two friends for an early dinner on a Friday and it was pleasantly empty around 3:30pm. The server took awhile to get to us but once she did we were well served. I really wanted a marguerita, they looked delish, but I had to get on the road at the end of the day and didn't think that was wise. We ordered chips and guacamole which was homemade and super tasty. He ordered spicy fish and chips, she ordered fish tacos, and I ordered enchiladas verdes. We all declared our dishes tasty. One star off for the mexican rice, which wasn't fully cooked so that she and I were picking rice kernels out of our mouths as we ate. Maybe next time we'll send the rice back, but there will be a next time!

I want to give this place more stars! My friend and I spent a delightful day shopping the great boutiques in downtown Westerly and decided to eat lunch here because the smells coming out the door were intoxicating! It wasn't as busy as it should have been at 1pm on a Thursday but I hope they have the busier times they deserve at night or on the weekends. With the giant bar in one of the rooms, I imagine they have a great weekend meeting spot. We started with chips and salsa. Everything about this place is so authentic, the homemade chips included. There were so many tempting choices on the menu but we finally decided on the taco salad and the combination taco plate. We both were so satisfied but I must rave about the salad. Hands down, it was the best taco salad I've ever eaten! Usually they are boring and unsatisfying but this was chock filled of everything yummy including ground beef and avocado. I really should have split it in two and taken half home but I could stop eating it! Our server was so pleasant and accommodating! What a pleasant experience in a quaintly decorated place! I can't wait to return!

    Ceviche anyone?

This place is hands-down one of the best places I've had ceviche. The flavors were incredible and not to mention the presentation was beautiful as well. I appreciated that they gave a lot of tortilla chips to go with it. Other items I tried on the menu included the fried ice cream and churros. Can't go wrong with good old churros. The place is very beautiful by the way. When I went, it had a very 'dia delos muertos' theme going on. Staff are super friendly here too. During the time I visited it was already late at night (past 9) and there were hardly any other people there, so I didn't worry too much about social distancing. I highly recommend this place :-)

    Edamame ginger guacamole and chips

Westerly is a somewhat magical place with a really quaint small town feel. We found Westerly while we were stationed in Connecticut and frequently drove into town to eat at the Malted Barley which is fantastic. Just this week however, one of my friends took me to taco Tuesday in Westerly and that's how I found this restaurant. When we arrived, there was ample parking on the street, and we were able to get in the door quickly. Once inside, we waited behind another party for at least 15 or 20 minutes before one of the employees realized that nobody was seating parties and and hurriedly sat the table before us. They then came to us and requested if we had a preference on the dining room or the bar and we picked the dining room. They sat us in the very back part of the restaurant, in the corner. It was dark and awkward, but it gave us some quiet to catch up. Our waitress greeted us after some time and took our drink orders while we looked over the menu. It was taco Tuesday which meant the tacos were $2 each and they had three different kinds of taco with many different kinds of meats to choose from. They also had the regular menu to order off of, for those who didn't want tacos. Once we were ready to order, we had to flag our waitress down again. I ordered the platanos fritos starter and a vegetarian burrito with queso sauce and I specifically requested no bell peppers. My friend ordered the edamame ginger guacamole to start and she ordered one of each style of taco, each with shrimp. Unfortunately there must have been some misunderstanding because our waitress had a very difficult time discerning that my friend wanted one of each type of taco and not all the same taco. I don't understand how this was misinterpreted. While we were waiting for our food to arrive, they seated another table next to us, despite the rest of the restaurant being basically empty. The two guys at the table next to us were very intrusive and kept asking us questions about our food. At one point, one of the guys actually said "whatever you girls don't eat just hand over to me and I'll have it" and he wasn't joking. Throughout the rest of our dining, they kept evesdropping and interjecting in our conversation and it made me very uncomfortable. Finally our food arrived. The guacamole was chunky and the texture was good but the ginger was overdone for the delicateness of the edamame and the guacamole. The ginger was just too harsh and overpowering and overwhelmed the rest of the flavors. My platanos were overcooked and almost burned, but I guess in some ways even burned platanos are better than no platanos? Once we got to our entrees, things just continued to go downhill. My friend did get all three tacos with shrimp, but they were not the three different ones as she ordered. My burrito was also a mess, full of bell peppers even though that's what I specifically requested not to have. The waitress also brought the cheese sauce on the side instead of substituting the cheese sauce for the green sauce on the burrito. The burrito itself was also very messy and because of that was difficult to eat. Prices seemed high for the overall lack of skill in taking orders and making orders. I felt like they had a pretty impressive range of items on the menu including Asian fusion and traditional Mexican cuisine including cactus, but they thoroughly missed the mark on their cooking. The biggest issue I think was the order taking, given that half of our items were incorrect. I don't think I will probably return here, however I do think that my friend will return because it's the closest Mexican restaurant to her house and she believes that even bad Mexican food isn't really that bad. I however disagree.

This is our second time at Amigos. They have a nice atmosphere with an amazing menu. My favorites include the Fried Plantains with condensed milk & cinnamon powder to start and the Lobster & Oaxaca Cheese Chiles Rellenos. Being a fan of Chile Rellenos adding lobster to it makes it a guaranteed win! Since we usually come here after drinking at the Tapped Apple, we have never ordered from the bar; however, they do have a nice full service bar and it looks like they make an amazing margarita! Westerly is such a fun town to walk through with a bunch of really nice shops well worth stopping into. All of this walking around and shopping it is nice to have such an amazing place to eat right in the heart of it all.

    Chicken Tacos and beef tacos

The chips and guacamole are a must order!! The chips are almost like fried, and paired greatly with the fresh guacamole. We split the chicken tacos and ground beef tacos, which had great flavor, and a yummy sauce on top. Prices were fairly expensive, but the food was authentic, the service was quick, and the waitress was so kind! The restaurant has fun decor and plays enjoyable music.

You'd be right, there are restaurants here serving such standard cuisine, but what makes a trip to the Boro special is a trip to Milagro Cafe, serving the best Mexican food and drink in Southeastern Connecticut. Having eaten in dozens of Mexican restaurants from Texas to NYC over the years, my wife Pat and I were thrilled to find Milagro: sure, it has traditional burritos and tacos dishes, but the chef's take combining Mexican fare with an American twist is special. Last night I had braised beef enchiladas, while Pat chose roasted pork with tomatillo and cactus sauce-- both incredible. And the drinks! Milagro Cafe has a truly amazing bartender in Rebecca who, given her talents with margaritas, would be a renowned mixologist if she were in Manhattan ( although she'd never let anyone call her that.) She creates an amazing array of original margaritas, whether her classic Patron ( my go-to) or one of her seasonal creations ( Pat loved Rebecca's mixed berry margarita, a summer selection)...better than any we've ever had, anywhere. When you add in a warm, professional and attentive staff led by Theresa, who provides service, a smile and smarts with everyone who enters the cafe, you have in Milagro Cafe one of the best reasons to visit the Boro. I was initially disappointed because we were served the drink without a shark in it and that was the whole point of the shark bowl. We asked another bartender if we could get one and he gladly got it, and served it in our drink A few sips in and stirring the drink we noticed that something was floating in the drink. Long story short, It was receipt paper crumpled up. We told the bartender and he really didn't seem to care. He said it must've fallen in when they got more ice. No apology. He did offer to remake the drink, but my friend saw that he was aggravated after his face stated so and decided not to get it remade. Although he was nice enough, I guess to offer a spoon when we asked to fish it out. Since I was on vacation, I had decided to say screw it and order a spicy margarita. I'm not sure what he put in the drink but halfway through, I couldn't even tolerate the rest of it. It was way too strong. I don't know if he was trying to make up for a lost causes but the drink was to worst I've ever had. Another bartender saw that we were upset and gave my wife the rest of a piña colada he was making for somebody else. Although this drink was complementary, we ended up being charged for it. We brought this to the attention to our original bartender. We ended up getting A fixed, but its overall interaction made us not want to come back to Paddy's ever again. Other people did get served by the same bartender and their interactions were completely different. He was smiling, gave the leis and was being friendly. I wish I got his name because I would've complained to the manager. But we just decided to leave and save the rest of our money.

Enchiladas? You know, the comfort food we've all come to know that the wonderful culture of Mexico has shared with the United States. Don't expect any of these items when you arrive at this restaurant. I hate when chefs take good cuisine and add extra shit to it trying to be fanciful only to make a meal that is unbearable to eat. And unfortunately that's what we experienced tonight along with a restaurant, full of other people who were looking at the food and trying to guess what the hell it was. We started with margaritas, which had nothing to do with a margarita, except for the fact that it had tequila in it. Those were sent back properly and we asked for a regular margarita that wasn't on the menu and they told us. "Oh yes, we can make that." Then we ordered chips and guacamole. The guacamole arrived with pumpkin seeds in it. Never had nor have I ever seen guacamole with pumpkin seeds. It also had passion fruit chopped up in it, making it even odder and Stranger, and not very tasty. We really struggled with what to order for the main course. Nothing that you would normally expect in a Mexican restaurant was on the menu. Yes, they had the names such as tacos and enchiladas, but they had nothing to do with a Taco and absolutely nothing to do with enchilada. Even the quesadilla had nothing to do with the quesadilla. That was the real mystery to us. It appears that they had taken a plate and smeared black beans across the bottom of it. Then they took a blue tortilla shell and added cheese that didn't melt. At first we thought it was square cubes of tofu, as it was also in the tortilla soup. The quesadillas had mushrooms and folded in half and to what we would think is a taco. This was laid on top of the bed of black beans on the plate. Making it extremely messy to eat. The wait staff is used to this. They were bending over backwards and apologizing. They knew the customers did not like this food and it is something they have been dealing with for the past year or so that this restaurant has been opened. We felt really bad for the wait staff because you could see the discomfort in their eyes when they sat a plate down. They knew as the customers would soon come to know, this food sucks. So if you want some delicious Mexican food, you won't find it here. Go somewhere else or up for something else. Hopefully one day, the Mexican chef at this restaurant will forgo his liberal ideas of new and exciting dishes that no one can stand, and get grandma's recipe book out and start fresh. Only then will he have a successful restaurant.
