Generally okay for a Greek restaurant. Sea Bass was good but felt ripped off by $42 octopus appetizer, barely any octopus and not grilled or seasoned particularly well. Restaurant not crowded, yet seated us next to the cash register so we could listen to waiters chit chat, $280 lunch for two! No coffee, alcohol or dessert for that price. Location and ambiance was fine and staff friendly. Went there considering maybe as a place for office Christmas party, not gonna do it ( GHW Bush inflection intended). read more

Went here for lunch and it was far too quiet and empty, creating an odd atmosphere. Food was ready in probably less than 5 minutes after ordering (chefs must've been waiting around!). The waiter was nice but was rushing us a bit (definitely more of a business lunch format). Whole meal was probably less than 45 minutes. Also... prices were exceptionally high! I came for lunch and reserved a table for 4 on there website and bought a gift card for $500 value for $450. Great deal. When I arrived the Hostess handed my gift card to me. They had it ready in an envelope under my reservation. Nice touch. I ordered the fish special which was sea bass. Delicious! prepared perfectly. A winner! You can't go wrong with fresh fish. Lots of selections on the menu. The acoustics were good- every table full, lots of background chatter but you can't hear anything specific from the people talking at the nearby tables I could conduct my business and hear well without distractions at my table. Was fortunate to try many things off of their menu. For appetizers, tried the pikilia (dip platter with pita bread), horiatiki (greek salad), chips lahanikon (fried eggplant / veggies with dip), kavouro-keftedes (crab cakes), keftedes (sirloin meatballs). All appetizers were delicious - well seasoned and prepared with a lot of flavors and sauces to accompany. For entrees, the options were garides makaronia (shrimp linguini pasta), vegetarian version of the linguini pasta, tonos (pan-seared tuna with carrots, spinach, and Brussel sprouts), and arni yiouvetsi (lamb shank with tomato orzo). The shrimp linguine pasta had many pieces of shrimp, but the pasta was creamy but bland. The tuna was slightly fishy, but the vegetables and sauces that it came with were well seasoned. The lamb shank was gamey and unfortunately not too tender. The orzo that was cooked in a tomato sauce was bland and did not help with the overall dish. Given that the appetizers were well seasoned, was disappointed that all the entrées were underseasoned. However, pleased to note that this establishment specializes and offers great Greek wines. read more

I've visited Ammos twice, once during peak lunch hour and once for dinner. I recommend making a reservation, as lunchtime gets very busy, while dinner is much quieter. The fish here is incredibly fresh, though a bit on the pricier side since it's sold at market price by the pound. If I had an expense account, this would be the place to waste money at. However, without one, the prices seem extremely high for the mediocre fish and cocktails. The service was decent, probably because one of my dining companions knew the manager. Our group of five shared some appetizers and each ordered grilled fish as the main course. The lunch pre fixe is at Estiatorio Milos prices ($55) but this restaurant *really* falls short. A case study where Yelp is accurate and Google reviews are useless. What should have been a 45 minute express lunch was, inexplicably, a 70+ minute affair. The spanakopita looked amazing (like a puffy lasagna) but it was awkward to eat. The filo dough was too hard and trying to cut through it just caused a mess with my fork screeching across my plate. Pretty long wait. The catch of the day was served with two hard, unseasoned, potato wedges and two small cuts of fish. This is nowhere near Estiatorio Milos in terms of taste, elegance, or portion size. I was *really* surprised to see expense account people seemingly enjoying themselves even as the lunch took 30% longer than it should have and the food was this *meh*. read more

Ammos Estiatorio is an excellent restaurant with a great menu for restaurant week. Reservations were easy to make via Open Table and I was immediately seated given Ammos was relatively empty on a rainy Friday evening. Ammos is conveniently located on the western side of Grand Central along Vanderbilt. Upon entry, it took a moment to be seated in its beautiful interior along the Vanderbilt facing windows. I already knew what I wanted from the restaurant week menu, which was well chosen and I applaud Ammos and other restaurants for offering a great menu for restaurant week. I ordered the lobster and yogurt salad as the appetizer and the Arni Yiouvetsi lamb shank as the main course to be accompanied by a bottle of red wine, the old vine Dougas Rapsani blend of Xinomavro, Krasato, and Stavrato varietals aged three years before bottling. Olive oil drizzled bread slices were immediately brought to the table with a ramekin of black olives and a green olive in the center. I ate a few of the black olives and the green olive, which is a remarkable achievement given I have never liked olives. Taverna Kyclades in Astoria and Ammos Estiatorio have helped me along in trying to expand my palate to include olives. I'm still not there, but one day I might like olives. The olive oil drizzled bread was good. The Rapsani old vine blend at $92 is excellent with a definite cherry note and a trace of minerality. It noses well and has a medium to full body, a decent mouthfeel, and medium length in finish. What it does well is pair with the food, particularly the lamb shank. The lobster and yogurt salad was generous with lobster and worthy of the $18 upcharge. It has chunks of lobster meat in a yogurt avocado puree dressing with a touch of jalapeno, black pepper and lime which lend an uplifting kick to it. It's perfect for summer and I could see it as an entree in a larger portion with watermelon and sugar kiss melon chunks and perhaps a sharp cheese roughly grated on top. The flavors and textures of the lobster salad were balanced and the fresh lobster and dressing worked well with the red wine. The oh so tender lamb shank with orzo in light tomato base came next. It came out piping hot and upon mere probing with the fork and knife, the meat fell off the bone in one movement. No cutting or knife action was required. The tomato base was used in restraint to balance the richness of the lamb and the orzo became the carrier. My server, Konstantino, better known as Dino, said most patrons order the lamb shank and I can well understand. Dino was well versed in whatever is on the menu and understands their composition and preparation well, particularly how they prepare the lamb shank so that it is both juicy on the inside and caramelized on the outside. The wine synergized and paired so well with the lamb shank. Then, as if it all could not be topped, I ordered the Karidopita walnut cake with vanilla ice cream with coffee and cream to cap off the meal. The honey cinnamon syrup drizzled on top will captivate your sweet tooth palate and you will wish they provided a real scoop of ice cream to accompany it. Regardless of where I dine, restaurants are always far too limited with the ice cream and sorbet. The patrons can handle and want more than a soupspoonful. Nevertheless, it was a great cap to a great and fulfilling meal and it leaves me wondering how the overall rating of Ammos Estiatorio is as modest as it is and how the restaurant could be so relatively empty, despite the rain. For another work event, the organizer selected a place that specializes in Greek dishes near our workplace, tucked at the corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan. This place is spacious and elegant. We were led to a private mezzanine for the gathering of 14 people. It was a prix-fixe menu of appetizers, starters to share, main entrees, and desserts to share. For the first course, the group started with the following: - Octapodi: Sushi-quality grilled Mediterranean octopus, fennel, spring onions, roasted red peppers, sweet balsamic emulsion - Pikilia: Tzatziki, taramasalata, melitzanosalata, htipiti, skordalia, served with pita - Keftedes: Ground sirloin meatballs with barrel-aged feta & parsley cooked in tomato & basil sauce - Saganaki style Greek graviera cheese, dry figs, flambéed with Metaxa brandy We found the dishes delicious and elevated, with a nice presentation. We then followed it with our entree. My eyes caught Rizi Thalasinon: Tiger shrimp, finely chopped shellfish & fresh catch fish fillet in wild mushroom risotto & truffle oil. It tasted wonderful and was freshly made, but my only qualm is there were only two pieces of tiger prawns right in the middle of the plate. And we were served an assortment of savory house-made desserts such as baklava, Yiaorti, Sokolata, and fresh fruits, served with fresh brewed coffee & tea. I ordered the special fish dish of the day, which was the halibut with veggie risotto. And a side order of the gigandes. The halibut was cooked to perfection! Perfectly seared outside and soft and tender inside! It is very easy to get halibut to overcooked (that happens to me all the time). And my side order of gigantes, I could not get enough of! I love this restaurant, but last night could be my last night for a while. Not only was it extraordinarily expensive, but the food was mediocre. The sardines were bland, and although the beet salad was really good, our whole white snapper was very average, served warm, not hot, and had was under seasoned. It was also $133 for a fish that served two of us. I probably should have ordered the individual fish entrees for a better opportunity for a good meal at a better price. When I mentioned the issue to the server, he went back to the manager, who did not come by the table to check on us, nor did he say goodbye and apologize as we walked past him as we were leaving. Unprofessional and very unlike the other times I've been. I'll find some other Greek restaurants nearby to replace this option. read more

The bread with a little olive oil and salt was great to start, we asked for more to go with the meal. Octapodi was ok, but they took it away before we finished it. Keftedes were meatballs that were actually quite good, and the sauce they were in went really well with the bread they started with. Main course, had the Makaronia Tis Giagias. Grandma's sauce with linguine and traditional Greek meat sauce, which was meh... the sauce on the meatballs earlier was better balanced. Not sure what it was - almost too sour for me. Came for restaurant week. Made a reservation on the website which the restaurant hadn't received. They sat us right away regardless. Wait staff was pleasant enough. Ordered the calamari- options of grilled or crispy, lamb burger medium, and walnut honey cake. Calamari was amazing: fresh, lightly crisped with lemon and a tangy aioli. Highlight. Lamb burger looked pretty but lacked seasoning. Again, very fresh, served with arugula, tomato, onions between toasted pita, with a side of fries. It needed something to bring the lamb to life. Unseasoned lamb is hurtful. Use the same seasoning from the chops in the burger!! Ordered dessert to go- walnut cake with ice cream. Got back to the office and there wasn't any ice cream. Similar food, but Limani is so much better in every single way. Restaurants that don't seat incomplete parties has always irked me, especially if it's only a party of 2. The bar section right as you enter is pure chaos, and the restaurant section in the back is marginally better. The good thing about a restaurant with relatively high noise level is that it's harder to eavesdrop. When sharing crab cakes becomes a habit, you notice the quality of the crab cakes without really paying attention, but consciously register how you always end up eating more of the share, even if these were filler heavy, with shredded crab meat and not jumbo lumps. The tuna was fine, but pre-cut into thin slices, which I did not appreciate. The walnut cake was dry. This dinner, like most ordeals in life, could've been avoided. We were shocked by how poorly this experience was handled. We ordered a fish dish without being told the weight, portion size, or cost -- only to be presented with a bill charging us nearly $300 for it. When we asked about the price and pointed out that the fish was absolutely full of bones and hard to eat, we were met with defensiveness from the server and told by the manager, "if it's full of bones, it's fresh." That is not how hospitality works. "Fresh" doesn't mean dangerous or unprepared -- and at this price point, you expect transparency, professionalism, and respect. We received none of those things. We paid the bill and we won't be back. There are too many incredible restaurants in this city that know how to treat guests right -- this is not one of them. read more

Friends loved the Arni Yiouvetsi: the lamb shank slowed cooked and served with at tomato sauce with Greek orzo. Dessert: mango sorbet. Good! Friends love the Karditopita walnut cake drizzled with a honey syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Service was meh. Waiters were not too attentive. It was a busy night. My friend and I came here for Summer Restaurant Week, and was one of the few places that offered a 3-course meal, including dessert. Most of the other restaurants only had 2-course meal deals, leaving out dessert, which I believe is a very important course. There were both outdoor and indoor dining options, and the wooden doors were wide open. The interior décor had a lovely rustic charm, featuring stone walls, along with brown, tan, white, and yellow (from the sunflowers) color scheme throughout the space. There were also beautiful large windows with white curtains and elegant place settings with white tablecloth. We were served complimentary toasted bread drizzled with olive oil and herbs. This was still warm and nicely crunchy. For the appetizer, I ordered crispy calamari with lemon caper aioli. This was absolutely delicious! The calamari was delightfully crispy, well seasoned, delicate, as well as light, and I enjoyed the bold flavor from the aioli. I went for the Fresh Catch of the Day for my entrée, which was served with a medley of fresh vegetables, including zucchini, peppers, asparagus. The fish was a white fish, which had a mild taste, was tender, flaky and cooked to perfection. The only issue was the portion was a little small. The veggies were yummy as well, making the dish colorful and adding brightness. As for dessert, I had the Karidopita, which was walnut cake dipped in honey cinnamon syrup, with vanilla ice cream on the side. This cake was truly delectable! I loved how wonderfully moist and rich the cake was. The honey cinnamon added a layer of irresistible sweetness. Service was impeccable throughout our time here. I love Greek food, and one of my goals in life is to go to every Greek restaurant on this planet. I came here for a quick, happy hour, and had the pear drink as well as a couple of the appetizers, including the zucchini. Fritters, shrimp, and octopus. After getting off the train, my friends ans I were looking for a nice spot for apps & drinks & thank God we chose this spot. 2 appetizers we ordered, 1st Chips Lahanikon, let me just tell you that we were still talking about this the next day, that's how frickin amazing it was. Crispy vegy chips, not breaded,crispy,the yogurt it came with, like STOP! DELICIOUS! Next we did the sirloin meatballs which were also yummy, but can u tell what I liked more? Our server was the best waiter during our visit to NYC. He was very personable and attentive. Fish of the day had great flavor and was incredibly tender. The risotto was just ok with what seemed like frozen veggie mix. Half chicken dark meat was really tender and flavorful but white meat was a little on the dry side. This was a major disappointment. First of all, the service the entire night was quite odd. Our server was nice enough and seemed to know the menu very well, but throughout the night we had three different servers come to assist us. Our original server came to ask us how the meal was, then 30 seconds later another server would stop by. This happened multiple times. When we asked who we assumed was a busser to get our waiter because we wanted drinks, he just asked us what we wanted right there -- no menu, no nothing. All just very confusing. Additionally, once we finished our meals, our original server brought the check immediately. The plates weren't even cleared yet, and none of us had requested the check. Since the table was small, there wasn't even space to write. It felt like we were being hurried out, yet the restaurant was nearly empty. The food was fine enough -- I had the makaronia tis giagias which was great and the other at the table each had a fresh whole fish. Felt like treating myself to a first-class dinner with a friend, so we headed to Ammos for Greek! First impression: the vibe is extremely homey, authentic, and open, yet upscale and romantic. I hung out for some time before my friend arrived, so I really took it in and enjoyed it. We shared the grilled calamari, which was some of the best I've ever had. It tasted so fresh! I got the Tsipoura fish, which is imported from the Greek islands and had a mild flavor. It's huge, so although you pay a pretty penny, I believe it's worth it. We also shared a side of jumbo asparagus with Greek cheese, which you can never go wrong with. The service was very professional and welcoming. Reservations were easy to make, hostess was flexible with me waiting at the bar, and best of all, the waitress gave us a thorough explanation of their fish display before we ordered! My party ordered a few things off the menu and it was good. The Pikilia was good to share. We opted for the garlic flavored spread which is really garlicky so just beware haha. Kalamari was nice, but it was a little bland. The Keftedes (meatballs) was the best along with this baked bean salad. They both had a lot of flavor. For the main we had the catch of that day filet, Kotopoulo (chicken) and the penne pasta. They were good but I think the penne was the best because the pesto tasted fresh.
