Kiki's has been on my list since I moved to NYC ~5 years ago and it was finally time to try it out! I went with a group of 4 on a Friday around 6:45pm. Unsurprisingly, there was a long line to put down our names on that gloriously warm and sunny spring evening. We were told the wait time was 1-1.5 hours which honestly went by so fast because there are so many fun places around the area. We got our table at around 8pm in the restaurant area right across the street. I can definitely see the timeless appeal of this place-- the vibes are so fun, the energy is young and vibrant, lights are dim, the music is loud, the smell of sizzling grilled meats and fries fills the space -- all of this hidden behind the facade of a printshop in Chinatown. It's a one-of-a-kind place. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced. We shared: - bottle of orange wine: very generously priced which we easily split amongst us 4. The wine was bright, refreshing and had a lot of body. - dips: we ordered the tzaitziki and the fava bean dip. They accidentally gave us the tirokafteri (or spicy feta) initially which was ironically my favorite dip out of the ones we tried, with the perfect creamy and spicy balance. The tzaitziki was also delicious, refreshing, and cool. The fava bean dip eventually came and it was a bit flat in flavor and texture compared to the other two. It tasted like blended fava beans with some capers on top and no other flavor elements. It was also a bit dry and I was expecting a texture more similar to hummus. The dips came with very delicious pita/regular bread and we also asked for cucumber slices for our gluten free friend (didn't know this was an option but cool!). - octopus: pretty small portion for 4 people but amazing! The octopus was super tender and flavorful. Considering how busy this place is, I was surprised at how well made this was. They have the dish mastered. Highly recommend! Would order again. - gigante beans: tomato bean stew, pretty good and filling! Good to share if you want something a bit more hearty and warm. Also gluten free! Perfect for colder months. - saganaki: I think I would come back exclusively for this alone. It's the perfect dish: the salty and melty cheese is packed inside layers of crispy, flaky, buttery phyllo, with sweet honey on top. This had the perfect balance of flavors and textures. I would order one for myself next time. Definitely a crowd favorite. - mixed grill: the menu said this was for 3 but it was actually a very generous portion for us 4. Delicious meats: it had lamb chops, some chicken and pork souvlaki, Greek sausage, and ground beef patties, all over a bed of well seasoned fries and pita. Truly a stellar dish. Perfect to share and super satisfying. - desserts: we tried the baklava and cheesecake. The baklava came completely without structure and was not that good (too heavy on the cinnamon for my taste and not enough filling), however the cheesecake was rich and creamy with a tangy flavor that perfectly balanced the sweet strawberries and delicious crust! Very well made. My major critique is that the service was quite disappointing. I felt like our waitress was not very kind/ helpful/ was annoyed at us perpetually for no good reason. Additionally, items in our order were messed up or came out too late (which is usually acceptable because we all make mistakes but flagging down anyone for help was virtually impossible). Ultimately, I would probably come again with a group of young people because the food was so good and affordable. The vibe is also pretty unique. However, Kiki's could certainly benefit from polishing its service a bit/ hiring more staff so there is enough attention to customers. I arrived earlier than my friends so I couldn't get seated until the full party was there. I waited at the bar and it took awhile for someone to serve me at the bar. I was served a glass of water and a menu. I asked about non alcoholic options and wasn't interested as it was mostly sodas or a sparkling water. I decided to order nothing at the bar and I wasn't met with contempt or anything so I appreciated that. The host was nice and was the one who served me while also hosting. My friends arrived and we were seated, no issues with us dictating which 4 person table we would prefer. We ordered the octopus, the spinach/tomato dish, zucchini chips, moussaka and something from the grill - some ground beef. The zucchini chips came out first and it was fine. A bit soggy but flavoring was decent. The spinach tomato came out next and that was really good, highly recommend. My friend thought it was sour but I didn't think it was that sour. The octopus was good but a tad too salty maybe and we also over drenched it with lemon, so it was okay. I wasn't a fan of the moussaka since it was my first time trying this and I'm not a fan of cinnamon used in this way. The ground beef from the grill had good flavoring, but a bit boring of a dish. Kiki's was always packed every time I walked by. Now that the weather is warmer, I made my way down to check out their Greek dishes. My friend was recovering from a GI bug so we had an abbreviated dinner and focused more on their small plates. The taramosalata features fish roe and covered an umami, savoriness that went well with their pita. The crunchy walnut served a textural contrast against the eggplant mash melitzanosalata, which again was perfect as a dip. The grilled octopus was well-seasoned. The larger pieces were very tender. The saganaki is a nice treat for those who like the sweet-savory combo. The crispy phyllo adds another textural contrast and the lemon juice helps balance out the bold sweetness from the honey. The maroulosalata salad had fresh veggies and a good balance of the herbs and feta. When the weather is nice, they have a good amount of outdoor seating. Didn't manage to go to Kiki's on my first try (6pm thursday) as a line quickly form in front of the restaurant in the evening. We really wanted to try this place tho so we came back on sunday for lunch and they had room to welcome us. The food was delicious and it felt like i was back in vacation in Greece. I came here with two friends for dinner on Veteran's Day -- at 7pm, there was plenty of seating, but people definitely started arriving in droves soon after. Note that they won't seat your party until everyone is here. The wait soon after us rose to about 1.5 hours, but thankfully, we only had to wait about ten minutes for our table. My favorite thing about this restaurant is probably the ambiance. It's surprisingly spacious inside, and with a lot of dark wood and dim lighting it felt like a crossover between a pub and a rustic farmhouse. I also saw some nooks with long tables, so this could be a great spot for a larger group. The service was prompt. For a table of three, we ordered the Horiatiki Salad, Zucchini Chips, Mama's Oven-Roasted Chicken, and Moussaka. All the food was good, though not amazing. I really liked the zucchini chips, which were evenly crisped and tasty, but the chicken was a bit disappointing, and the moussaka interestingly tasted like it had some cinnamon-y fruit slices at the bottom. For dessert, we split the greek yogurt with sour cherry preserves. The greek yogurt was high-quality, but wasn't anything surprising. The cherry preserves, though, were honeyed, almost like a liquid taffy, and absolutely delicious. The price came out to about $35/person, which I thought was pretty good for a dinner out in New York. On a Tuesday night, the restaurant started to get busy around 6pm. They don't seat you until most of your party arrives and they don't take reservations. We had a party of 8 and were seated almost immediately at around 6:30, but were warned that our 1.5 hour dining time would start even though the whole party didn't arrive yet the moment we sit down. The food comes out pretty quickly so this wasn't a problem. We decided to do family style dining where we all shared a little of each dish. I'm glad we went that route so I could try more of each dish and give a fair review of their food! The dishes came out in no particular order - when it was ready to be served. To start, we had the horiatiki which is a Greek salad. A very classic salad but theirs had bigger pieces/chunks of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and olives as opposed to cutting things smaller. Taste wise was pretty okay. We did have a few allergy/ food preferences where everything with feta was on the side. So we loved that they were able to accommodate for that! Brownie points for that! We also ordered the Saganaki, Zuchinni chips, grilled octopus and calamari from the Hot Small Plates section of the menu. The Saganaki was very crispy with the phyllo dough and pretty sweet as it was drizzled in honey. Another good classic that paired well with the hot cheese! zucchini chips were lightly crispy and thin. A healthy option that satisfies any chip craving. The grilled octopus came as a recommendation. Texture wise I think it was overcooked and a little bland but I'm glad I tried it! The calamari though was superb and would order again. We ordered one dish from the Traditional Plates section of the menu- the moussaka - which is reminiscent of a shepherds pie. Presentation was great and it was a solid option. The potato on top is mashed. The stars of the show were from the Grill. We ordered the Mixed Grill Platter on a bed of hand cut fries and the Fresh Whole Fish - Branzino with oven-roasted potatoes. These two dishes I would definitely definitely order again. The meat had a nice char to it, nicely seasoned, and the sausages were so good! I didn't have the lamb as I don't love it but the people who had it loved it. The branzino itself was a whole fish and served as such so it understandably had a lot of bones so be careful if you do order it! It was cooked well and the lemon roasted potatoes were great! Very lemony and I enjoyed the sauce from that with the fish. To end, we ordered a few baklavas to share. By far, the best baklavas that I've had in Manhattan. Very crispy, crunchy, and full of flavor! 5/5 would definitely come back again. P.S. there isn't an English sign that points that this place is Kiki's. They kept the old sign that's from a printing company. So 30 minutes just waiting with no food of any kind and watching everyone else eat. I get up and walk to him, he tells me no complimentary pita and he'll check on the Spinach pie. I order a pita with tzaziki because i was starving. 5 mins later, the spinach pie comes out. Meh, it was ok. Definitely not worth a 35 minute wait. As always, Kiki's was our treat after a long walk down from midtown east. And Kiki's is our favorite casual Greek restaurant. But Saturday night, it was above and beyond, truly a superb meal. We always begin with horiatiki, and this one was particularly good; the slab of feta was softer and seemed not quite as salty as feta often is. One portion is perfect for 2 hungry adults. Then I had inadvertently asked for fava beans when what we wanted was gigante beans. Our server was very gracious when I called her over to say that we had not ordered the dip and basket of pita. Turned out that it was a fava bean dip, which I'm sure would have been lovely but we wanted the cooked gigantes. She took away the dip, soon brought us the dish of gigantes. They definitely make the very best gigantes we've ever eaten. The dill shone through clearly and the sauce was awesome. When she brought it over I apologized for my ordering error, but she said no problem, it was understandable. What a lovely, customer-friendly response. We then shared the whole grilled branzino; that's the first time we ever ordered it at Kiki's. Like everything else, it was fantastic! It was a large, meaty fish, head to tail, served on a sheet pan like a cafeteria tray. Lots of lemon. Comes with a choice of yummy lemon potatoes or yummy spanakorizo, we chose the latter for the first time. Again, the tomato-dill sauce was very tasty and it was a good portion for two. I proceeded to debone the fish, which was messy but fun. There were plenty of napkins on the table! It was a really hot day, so we'd opted to eat inside which was just a bit cooler than out, but many diners seemed perfectly happy and comfortable outside as well. As we were seated and looking at the menu, I overheard the server messed up the drink order for the table next to ours. I joked with my friend, I hope it doesn't happen to us. It did happened to us. I ordered shrimp pasta but got sautéed shrimp instead. They brought the shrimp back and told me it's going to a wait for the shrimp pasta. The wait for the shrimp pasta was at least 15 minutes. Which we finished the appetizer. I asked my friend to start on her entree. The Mama' chicken was getting cold. Nobody came over to check on us or refill water. The server did not removed the wrong order from the bill. What a hidden gem! I eat a lot of Greek food in Astoria and this stacked up! The restaurant has a very different vibe than the outside decor and surrounding area (sort of speak easy like).
