Our desperate quest for an authentic Greek Pita Souvlaki in the US finally came to an end a few days ago while we were vacationing in NYC. This restaurant had it all: the decor, the ambiance, the nostalgic Greek memorabilia, the authentic accents and the genuine, impeccable food. We loved it so much that we came back the following day and believe me, had we lived closer, this place would become a favorite lunch stop. The service is friendly and attentive. Their menu has various main dishes and appetizers. We liked what we ordered (vegetarian moussaka [$25] and steak pita with fries [$11+] inside) but the plate felt incomplete because they came with nothing on the side - no salad or complimentary pita/hummus. Our server was ok (not overly friendly or interested) but warmth did exude from some of the other staff who bussed our plates. As of now I have been to all the locations! I don't remember service being as amazingly fast as this location. All the items we ordered had very good portion sizes from the appetizers to the main dishes. The dips we ordered (garlic, eggplant and fish roe) were big enough to fill up a rice bowl! One of the specials...Beef stew with lemon potatoes. That dish was HUGE. Depending how much a person eats, it is enough for 2-3 people. The other special we ordered was whole (even stems were still on ) baked eggplant with shrimp, feta and a very tasty sauce (might have minced bits of meat in it). Seats at tables and the spacing/pathway between tables is really tight even for a slim sized person like me, but at least the restaurant setting has a very welcoming family oriented cozy kind of vibe, great for small groups. read more

Main complaint is this place is way too cramped. Came with some girl friends and we are all small but things were toppling off the table and someone was bumping into our chairs every two minutes. It's pretty annoying to eat a meal and have someone repeatedly say "sorry" then get a butt in your face. It's a logistical and safety issue if the waiters literally cannot walk up and down without making both sides push in their chair each time. Felt like it would've been better if we were just standing the whole time. The patio furniture indoors is a nice idea but just impractical to eat more than one dish off of. I'm not sure how they've lasted so long with this layout. Food was okay, nothing outstanding. Not worth the pain of simply sitting in the space. Sad because I think it could be a lot better if the just sacrificed two tables and switched to more stable furniture. Enjoyed the time with my friends here but I would go elsewhere next time. read more

Only giving 2 stars bc the person otp was very apologetic and sincere, and offered a solution to my problem. Otherwise, super disappointed. Was craving fries after my exams at school and I asked for them extra crispy. I know the person at the front typed it in because I see it on my receipt. My beef is w the kitchen for serving something so abysmal. I even tried to air fry it at home... 13$ of food wasted. I did get a refund, but it's the principal. You guys need to either change ur fry recipe, or ur take out process. I immediately opened the package when I got it bc I know fries get soggy if they're in packaging too long. They were soggy the moment I got them. and only walked one block home. Too many crammed in a small box, and probably threw them in there immediately after frying. Taste horrible. Feta is good. I walked by this restaurant the night before and knew I needed to try just based on the decor and lights from the outside. I came in the next afternoon for lunch and while they were busy, was able to get a seat immediately. I tried the lamb pita and the chicken souvlaki and they were delicious! The chicken was tender and flavorful. The portions are perfect,- it's the right amount you can finish and be full and not have to worry about leftovers to carry around. We started with the hummus and pita bread, along with a Horiatiki Greek salad made with tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta, and Kalamata olives. If you're looking for a quick, quiet, and quaint spot as your walking around town, this is it. We almost walked past but were drawn in by the cool decor and open windows on a perfect Sunday afternoon. Once we were inside, we knew that it was going to be awesome as we looked at the tables to be seated. We did a full tasting style menu ordering a few different things for the table to try. Clearly, don't skip out on the Greek Salad, it was perfect, large, and fresh. It was a solid amount of healthy for the table and to help bring up our veggie quota after a long weekend. The Greek sliders were also good, perfectly portioned with a smidge of sauce to give it some ooomph. We couldn't leave without trying the spanakopita which came out piping hot (be careful) but had tons of flavor and was exactly as expected. My husband and I have passed the place so many times on our stay here and keep saying we need to go because of how nice it looks, and it definitely held up! The ambiance was so nice, we sat outside and got to people watch and enjoy the beautiful weather. The service was also so good, our waiter was so attentive and helpful with food recommendations. There is lots to love about Greek Food. For one, it is tested with time like few cuisines are. The meals are a combination of classic ingredients that is very difficult to rival: red onions and cucumbers in the Greek salad, zucchini in deep fried fashion within kolokithokeftedes, pork and feta if all of the initial items is not enough. Just good things. This small spot is incredibly popular and for a great reason. It is friendly, energetic and the food is very, very satisfying. The Greek salad is a portion that can easily be shared by two. The greek meatballs are nice and crispy. The kolokithokeftedes, or zucchini fritters are not the best preparation of this classic dish of Santorini, but still pleasant and the sauce is great. Chicken skewer is an absolute must, perhaps paired with lemon potatoes. The pork stuffed with feta and spinach may have been the less favorite part of the meal, the tomato sauce just did not work with the dish for my taste, also ruining the presentation of the stuffed goodness. Yet it's the people, like our Argentinian bartender, who are just awesome here. Everybody tries very hard, is kind and despite being fully committed, they offered to accommodate at the bar with a short wait. Souvlaki GR is a wonderful place. read more

Definitely my go to place when I visit NYC. First time trying this location as I have been to the lower east side location. The kontosouvlj definitely was not authentic since it was in the oven but I asked in Greek and the server gave me a heads up but said it was still good... I agree it was delicious even though my heart was set on grilled pork cube vibes. The salad reminds me of the salads in Greece!! And the fries were yummy! The baklava was so fresh!! We have passed by here so many times and thought it was cute. So we finally went in. The food was great. We had fried zucchini fritters, the branzino and chicken skewers. All were excellent. I also loved the lemon potatoes & sautéed spinach. The service was excellent. The servers had fun with my husband's attempts to speak Greek, as his heritage is Greek. The decor of this restaurant is just like the Greek islands with the white walls and blue roofs. The even have second story lanai's in blue. It is very tight between tables. I've been to the LES location a few years ago and remember liking it. For this girls' night, we picked this location because it was more convenient for everyone. Our party of 5 had 7 PM ressos for a Friday night. The tables are pretty tight, especially since we were seated at a location meant for 4 people. We also ordered quite a few dishes, so it was a little difficult to manuever everything and make room for the next dish. We shared: -The Soutzoukaki Pitza (homemade meatballs cooked in traditional tomato sauce drizzled with yogurt sauce) - although not authentic Greek food, I really liked this mashup and I love me a pizza. The meatballs were really good -Greek salad - a bit too much feta but fine overall. We just needed some greens to go with our meal -Hand-cut Greek fries - these weren't bad but I typically don't like hand cut because of the potato skins -Grilled octopus - this was my favorite of the night. Octopus can be chewy but it tasted fresh and was perfectly cooked in this case -Psita tis Oras Poikilia (mixed grilled meat platter) - this comes with lambchops, Greek sausage, chicken, pork, beef skewers, with pita and tzatziki. I liked the sausage and the pork the best -Branzino - this was also good. We got here 45 minutes before closing and they were kind enough to get us seated. The place is pretty cramped and you're seated close to other tables. First thing we got was the Tyrokafteri dip (3.5/5) with pita. This was not spicy at all and was actually pretty salty. It was a nice appetizer but I wish it wasn't so salty. We made a reservation at 2:30 on a Saturday for 5pm but when we walked in at 4:20ish there were plenty of tables. After 5 I would recommend making a reservation as it got busy quickly. We were promptly seated and provided menus. The dining room feels like you stepped into a home in Greece and is beautifully decorated. We ordered cocktails and there were so many specials and the menu is extensive. We ordered grape leaves, greek fries and the souvlaki wrap I got lamb my friend got chicken. There were a few fans in the dining room but it was otherwise a bit warm and I assume there is no AC but didn't bother us. Our cocktails and food came out quickly and was very fresh and flavorful. I had my leftovers wrapped and we had the honey balls for dessert. There isn't a dessert menu printed but the waitress told us what they had. We were three in the mood for some good Greek food on a Saturday night, and we weren't disappointed. A reservation is a good idea (particularly on a Saturday), as this is a small place. The interior is small and tight but with a lot of character. We started with cocktails - my friend got a Lychee Martinee - delicious and sweet. I had Ginger Me, and I would gladly return just for that drink. It's Skinos Mastiha (a liqueur with hints of mint and pine), lime, ginger, and triple sec. An incredible flavor, not too sweet. For appetizers, we got spanakopita (as deep-fried triangles - OK, but I prefer baked) and keftedes (meatballs with incredible depth of flavor served with tasty tzatziki). I got the moussakas - so good! A huge portion of comfort food that gives you a hug. My friends got Garides Saganaki (tasty shrimp, feta and tomato sauce) and lamb skewers (good, but the size of the lamb chunks seemed off and made them a bit tough). The staff was delightful. For a fast early Sunday dinner, I joined a friend at Souvlaki GR Midtown. At 5pm on a Sunday, the establishment only had a few occupied tables, so we received seating immediately. We decided to share the Lamb Shank ($30), Octopadi Stifado ($29), and 2x Chicken Skewers ($5.75 ea). Both the skewers and the Octopadi Stifado came served with pita. The lamb shank, described in the menu as "slow cooked lamb shank with orzo in tomato sauce", arrived just shy of fall-off-the-bone tender, bathed in a savory tomato sauce that soaked into the orzo. I used the pita to full effect in order to soak up every last drop of sauce. The Octopadi Stifado, an octopus stew w/caramelized onions in tomato sauce, had an even more savory tomato sauce, mixed with olive oil that carried the octopus flavor everywhere. Once again, the pita proved useful. The chicken skewers, with decent juice and char, proved irresistible. The pita arrived warm and fluffy. None of that dense brick nonsense that seems ubiquitous. Service proved fast. Dinner from seating to the check took 45 minutes. read more

The Greek salad doesn't come with any greens it's tomatoes, olives, feta and cucumbers but it's all very fresh and tasty. The zucchini fritters were surprisingly not crispy, but were very delish. Good times. Work dinner for 11. Took over most of the outdoor shed. They were accommodating our requests to moderate the heating which was appreciated. Service was friendly and prompt. Shed was otherwise functional but not much ambience to speak of, though the indoor space definitely has that Greece village feel. Stacks of apps and drinks. Spreads were yummy, especially the spicy feta. Octopus (perfectly cooked) halloumi (squeaky and satisfying) and meatballs were all good. For entrees, I shared a mixed grill and added on a lamb skewer, for science. I'll note here that a single skewer came with stacks of pita (more than the mixed grill even) so use that info as you will. Lamb chops were excellent but I think I preferred the flavor of the skewer instead, though salt did help the chops. The pork and chicken skewers were solid too, as were the sausages. Actually, I had been here before. And since I had such a great memory about it, we went back this time. No regrets at all. It was again wonderful. Packed to the last millimeter, we were smart to have placed a reservation. Athanasia was busy but provided a very attentive service and good advice. The Pirates of the Caribbean cocktail got me into the right spirit. The appetizers consisted of the Horiatiki salad, spanakopita (spinach pastries), and an stunningly tender octopus (which got 7 out of 5 stars). Among the shared mains, the veggie moussaka was my fav (even though I am not vegetarian); the chicken souvlaki and the Horiatiki pitza were very nice as well.
