Ordered a cake for my son's birthday. While they copied a picture I sent them really well...the taste of the cake was MEH. There was SO much frosting, they layered cake/frosting/cake/frosting and it wasn't even very tasty. The vanilla cake/vanilla frosting had NO flavor of vanilla at all and just tasted so buttery (not good). The COST was so much, I expected much for it. Definitely look elsewhere for a cake. Previously I had ordered a cake for my father's birthday. That cake was more tasty, but STILL soooo much frosting. It was cake/frosting/cherries/cake/frosting. read more

I've been here a few times and while their sweets are very good, the employees are rude. I had to pay $2 extra for another tea bag because they only had decaf tea, and while that's fine, it was the way they said that I'd need to pay more and the difficulty it was to have a little milk in my tea that really set a bad tone. While I was sitting there, a customer came in and left angry because they got her order wrong. The owner needs to retrain the employees. read more

Just went to the Herndon location and not only was the staff really friendly but the owner was there as well. The inside is stunning and it's amazing to be able to see the types of cakes they can make including a close up look into the kitchen area where they make all the desserts. My mom and I got a danish and a lemon square and they were both so soft, melt-in-your-mouth kind of treat. I can't wait to come here again! read more

We tasted Amphora at a wedding expo type event in Bethesda. We then schedule a cake testing with Nadia Patnode. She had approximately a dozen flavors for us to taste. We picked our top 3. We described and showed her pictures of two different cake designs to price out. She sketched up a design and gave us a price during the appointment. We chose the one we wanted, paid our deposit and bought a carrot cake (our favorite out of all of them) and took it home with us :-) She was great at walking us through the process, showing us color choices, and taking us through the baking section of the facility showing us a few specialty cakes that had just been made! We were able to up the size of the cake and change which layers were which flavors 1 week prior to the event. After looking around online we did decide that the bakery's 1 finger size slices were too small for our sweets loving family and friends and ordered a size for 80 guests when we had 60 guests. This was perfect as we only had a small amount of cake left over (and yes we cut the top layer to be served, so if we had wanted to save it, we would have been able to by upping the size). The cake went on a 1 hour drive, it arrived a big early, and set outside in the humidity for approximately 3.5 hours before being served. The fondant leaves started drooping. Perhaps if the cake was delivered during the 4-4:30pm window that was set up it might not have drooped so early. However, I believe drooping was to be expected under the circumstances. Unfortunately our photographer did not get pictures of the cake until the drooping had begun. The cake was just as ordered! Beautiful and absolutely delicious! Everyone raved about the flavors. We chose Grand Marnier, Double chocolate and carrot cake. With the carrot cake being the bottom and largest layer it was the only part of the cake we had left. :-) It was a huge success and I would highly recommend Amphora to anyone! They were professional, helpful and tasty! Just remember their slices are a bit on the small side, so if you have guests that like cake, overcompensate a bit :-) read more

Amphora made our wedding cake Apr 2017. It was vanilla with forest berry preserves and vanilla butter cream......delish! All of our guests loved it. When I called back 2 years later to order a very small anniversary cake in the same flavors and it was a FIASCO!!!! The first girl I talked to quoted me $28 for the smallest size they would make (a 7-in cake) and $2 more if I wanted them to write "Happy Anniversary" (should be free in my opinion). She said to place my order 3-4 days before I needed it. When I called back the next day to place the order I couldn't get help from the girl on the phone. Her English was terrible, she didn't understand what I was asking for, and didn't know how to help me. I called back the next day (hoping to get someone more helpful so I could place the order), another girl answered and told me I couldn't order wedding cake flavors! They make this cake for wedding tastings. Not sure why they would make it for that but not by request when given 5 days notice?!?! She called me back later and said they could do it but it would be $40. I live an hour from this bakery and was worried I might drive all the way there and not get what I wanted. I was beyond frustrated with all of the misinformation and it took away from reason I wanted the cake in the first place. My husband and I had an amazing wedding but were so busy we didn't eat any cake. My Mom saved the top tier to eat for good luck on our 1 year anniversary (awful as expected). We worked with Nadia Patnode at Amphora Bakery for our wedding cake and everything was wonderful. From our initial consultation meeting where she walked us through the process as well as her patience during our decision making process, things went very smoothly. Even when I decided to change the design of the cake a week before, Amphora Bakery handled it with grace. Additionally, what I appreciated most was the consultative approach from Nadia. She listened to my requests and would provide suggestions to improve upon the final product. I loved the fact that we even got a call about the color of the fondant for the base of the cake a couple of days before because the staff felt a different color would make the cake look prettier. Finally, the cake tasted wonderful! Even better than in our tastings. Many people have told me that I wouldn't remember much from our wedding even suggesting that I wouldn't remember the cake, but thanks to the service we received from Amphora Bakery, we will remember the cake. read more

Amphora's Bakery is a family favorite. We have sampled many of the bakery options and love them all. The white chocolate raspberry cake is our favorite! We hosted my niece's 8th birthday at the bakery and the children had an incredible time! We were amazed at the size of the cakes and the children were guided through the decorating experience. We got our Wedding cake from Amphora Bakery. Appt setup was easy and the tasting was SO much fun. It was difficult deciding which flavors to go with. We got a cake to feed 150 and it was 4 tiers and 4 different flavors. We picked custom colors and it was the most beautiful cake and better than I ever dreamed of. Exactly what we wanted and the guests raved about the flavor. It was so fresh and I was proud to have such a gorgeous and delicious cake at our wedding. The only reason why I am giving any stars is because the cakes and cookies taste fairly good and actually, you're not able to give a zero rating. We have ordered custom cookies and cakes from here and its little chance on whether you'll have a positive experience with the employees. We accidentally ordered from the Herndon location when we meant the Vienna one. When we arrived to the Vienna location today, the lady was very rude and unforgiving for the mistake. When asked if we could just buy a cake from there, she claimed that the Herndon staff had already set it aside and wrote "Happy Birthday" as requested. Ok, fair enough. But hours later when trying to pick up the cake, guess what - no message was written on it! Why lie?! I understand maybe people are stressed with the holidays, but don't lie to customers. Staff is pretentious, unflexible, and lecturing. I called five days in advance to order a carrot cake for a friend's birthday. The friend has some dietary restrictions and did not want raisins, coconut, or pineapple in the cake. The woman that answered the phone stated that Amphora refuses to customize the carrot cakes since they make so many of them, and then proceeded to lecture me that "it wouldn't be a carrot cake without those items." (For the record, I've NEVER eaten a carrot cake with pineapple or coconut! And there are plenty of carrot cake recipes online that also DON'T include raisins!) Fine. Amphora doesn't want to customize cakes (weird to operate a bakery and refuse to customize cake orders--but I guess that is their prerogative). What I don't get is why a staff person thinks it is ok to pompously lecture customers on what comprises the ingredients of a carrot cake, especially when she clearly doesn't know what she is talking about!! Who the heck do they think they are? The woman didn't even offer an alternative. I have bought all my birthday cakes at Amphora. I am done now. I'll find cakes elsewhere. Non-existent customer service and tasteless product. My fiancee and I are foodies so in planning our wedding we had allocated a large sum for the Wedding Cake. And we like supporting local brick and mortar. Unfortunately the customer service at the Amphora Bakery in Herndon is SO BAD that we couldn't even get them to return our queries. Despite four attempts by each of us. By phone and email. So there is clearly a fundamental and systemic weakness in their customer service ethos....they can't blame the phone system, or email, or too busy (since we tried over a period of 4 weeks.) Yesterday, I was in the area for lunch, so stopped in to get a chocolate chip cookie to see if we had missed anything. After all, if you can't get a basic chocolate chip cookie down, there is no way they could do a flavorful wedding cake. The cookie was tasteless, the batter was dry, crumbly and with no flavor. The "chips" lacked any hint of chocolate. I honestly would have preferred a Chips Ahoy, or the refrigerated Nestle Toll House stuff instead. While I munched on the tasteless cookie, I sat the counter overlooking their "bakery." I saw a 55 gallon garbage can labeled "chocolate buttercream." Really?!?!??! A garbage can full of frosting? No refrigeration. Is the stuff at the bottom from 2015? So save stress and money and go someplace else. Even the local grocery aisle. I was honestly so disappointed with Amphora. It was recently my 21st birthday, and I decided to splurge on a nice cake. When we got the cake it was buttercream instead of fondant. We had made sure to spend the extra Money to get a fondant cake. We were so disappointed because this was the only thing I wanted to spend money on and not to mention the buttercream was so overwhelming, no one even enjoyed the cake and it went uneaten. When we went to complain they said they would composite the price difference for the fondant (which we still have not received and it's been two weeks). This was even more disappointing because we wasted a lot of money on a cake that did not taste good, that did not get eaten, and they only wanted to compensate the service they never provided us (a fondant cake that we never got). And until now we still havnt been compensated for the fondant, so in fact we paid them Money for something they NEVER provided us. I'm usually on Yelp for two reasons: Either I had the best experience with an establishment that I have to come here and rave about it OR if I had the worst experience of my life, I would be on here to write about it. If I could take away that 1 star and had an option to give none, it's more appropriate for what my sister and I went through this weekend for my niece's birthday. My sister was planning for her daughter's 1st birthday over the weekend and when my brother in law went over to Amphora to pick up the cake at noon (the party was hosted in the same shopping center as Amphora location), they simply told him the cake was never made. WHHHHOA?! WHAT?!!! BACK UP FOR MOMENT, here. My sister ordered 2 tier cake with 12 cupcakes for this Saturday, paid $400 up front in FULL and you have NOTHING ready for us?? The party started at 12:30 and they said they would make a cake and 12 cupcakes by 12:45. I'm not a much of a baker but you can make a fancy cake within an hour with decoration and all?? The cake finally arrived by 1:15, it was nothing like what she had described and the cupcakes were complete mess! One of the cupcake wrapper was even different from the rest (11 were brown and 1 was white, what happened there, Amphora? Did you run out of a most simple and necessity supply??) What do you expect from a cake that was ready in less then an hour? I could've done a better job with Betty Crocker cake mix. You could just tell it was "half ass." job. Fast forward to today, when my sister spoke with the General Manager (you should be ashamed of yourself, if you are reading this), describing her what took place with the cake, her response was "you took the cake, you ate the cake". Well.... because we had no other choice but to accept this ONLY cake that we paid $400 for!!! If she declined to accept the cake, would Amphora have given her back full refund? I don't think so... Adding insult to the injury, only thing she could offer was $35 GC. How about a sincere apology and "let's see what we could do to make it better for you?" Hey Amphora, have you heard of customer service?? When she asked for her boss's contact information, she simply replied "I can't give that out to you." I got married 4 weeks ago and I just wanted to warn everyone NOT to get their wedding cake from Amphora Bakery in Herndon, VA because they delivered a FROZEN 5 tier cake to my wedding reception. They delivered the cake at 5:30pm and when I cut the cake at 10pm - the whole center of the cake was still frozen. I will admit the cake was beautiful and the one bite I did eat was good. My hotel told me that the cake was so hard they almost BROKE their knife trying to cut it and the pieces kept crumbling when they were cut. They also said there is no way that I got all the servings I paid for. Several people at my wedding were commenting about watching the guy trying to cut into the frozen cake. So embarrassing!! When I contacted Amphora a few days after my wedding (while on my honeymoon) to let them know I wasn't happy. They didn't respond. When I called them to follow up - they just ran around in circles. All they would say is that they don't freeze their cakes and they don't know what happened. My wedding planner, the hotel and event staff have spoken to Amphora and it's still not good enough for them to offer me any kind of refund. They did not offer an apology either. They do not return any phone calls - I had to continue to call them and follow up. To make this entire situation worse the owner, Maria Cholakis, was actually YELLING at me on the phone! She told me that they do not freeze their cakes and they don't even have a freezer big enough. I don't think they froze the cake after it was assembled, I think they froze the layers of cake and assembled it frozen and then decorated it. They tried to blame it on my hotel asking if they stored the cake after it was delivered - and it was not. Maria told me that I should have saved her a piece of cake and she would know what's wrong with it. How was I supposed to save the cake - I was on my honeymoon for almost 2 weeks? She said I should have had the hotel save the cake. What difference would that have made - it would be thawed by then or stale by the time I got back from my honeymoon. That is completely unreasonable. Not to mention that as the BRIDE, I should not be concerned with saving a slice of cake for the bakery. She told me that as far as she's concerned once they deliver the cake her job is done. I told her no it's not - you need to stand behind your product and deliver quality. She continued to yell at me that she would not issue any kind of refund until she personally interviewed every person at my hotel to find out what happened. I told her that her staff had already done that, I have an email from the hotel stating that they logged that the cake was extremely difficult to cut and they also spoke to my wedding planner who had the event staff tell her the cake was frozen the night of my wedding. Amphora Bakery has all the information any reasonable person would need to offer an apology and some kind of reasonable refund to make a customer happy. The way they have handled the entire situation is wrong. My word as an unhappy customer should be enough for them to apologize and offer a reasonable refund. They will not do either and I've been dealing with this for 3 weeks now. Unacceptable. Save yourself the trouble and DO NOT DEAL with Amphora Bakery!! They do not stand behind their cakes and don't care about their customer's happiness. read more

This is for the Amphora Bakery in Herndon off of Spring Street/Sunrise Valley Drive - not the diner. During flu season, the tall blond woman who was waiting on customers sneezed right into her hands. She kept waiting on customers - getting cookies, handing people bags, giving cc receipts to sign - without washing her hands. BTW, tthere is a sink right behind the cash register - not two steps away from her. I backed up so someone else would wait on me. I asked the young man who waited on me if it was their policy to wash their hands after sneezing right into them and he said of course. I told him what happened and he told me she was a manager. AWFUL customer service. The front desk person is reluctant to even answer my greeting, let alone make me feel welcomed. Their cakes are over prices compare to the quality. Still thinking to give them a 2nd chance I wanted to order a cake (I'm a cake enthusiast), the person at the front was reluctant to help me (I felt like I need to run away from her laser glare). I hurried and ordered an overpriced chocolate cake and left her death beam. However, I liked their glass windows that allowed us to see the bakery in operation. Brides BEWARE! I was married in August 2011, and we went with Amphora as our wedding cake vendor. It was a huge mistake and big headache!!! The first appointment included a tasting of a few of Amphora's signature flavors, which was great; however, the lady was not familiar with all the various flavors to choose from nor did she take the time to review the options, and appeared to have little experience in the area of wedding cakes. There was one wedding cake appointment after the next--ours lasting roughly 20 minutes--and there was barely any time to discuss the details. All very rushed and unprofessional. The prices were reasonable, but I guess you get what you pay for. The final product looked good and tasted fresh, but I had to pull my hair out dealing with the rude service. Also, as part of our wedding cake contract, we were promised an anniversary cake to be made just like our wedding cake a year after our anniversary. After numerous calls and extremely rude responses (such as "well, we don't have your contract on file anymore so we can't guarantee that the anniversary cake was included"), I finally gave up and we didn't get our anniversary cake--we were very disappointed. Wegmans (the grocery store) makes better cakes and provides better service than this place. Two thumbs down! read more

My daughter and i were at a Krav Maga class in the Sunset mall and wandered back into Amphora, which we had been at many times before when she and her brother took gymnastics next door. For the life of me, I cannot understand why they never have interested competent help at the front. I've been in and out of that space since it was Mom's Bakery and now Amphora (many years) and I have yet to run into anyone at the front of Amphora who gives a welcome. Perhaps the focus is on the cake baking in the back, but, as noticed by others in this thread, the front is just miserably manned. Today we tried to ask questions by a young attendant - my daughter wanted pumpkin pie - she said it was mousse and ran off. No follow-up as in, "may I help you?". I think there were a total of three women running the front but you really couldn't tell because they were all off here and there and not paying attention to any of the customers. I then tried to stand in "line" to get served. That didn't work. Phones kept ringing and the young gals were picking up the phones and dealing with them instead of the customers standing in front of them (a pet peeve, grrrr). Then someone else who had walked in after us got served next. Another phone call in and then yelling upstairs to try and transfer it. Finally, I got a blonde with a pony tail to start into our $19.00 order. Then she wandered off to deal with something else. When she returned to the checkout counter - no eye contact - I actually had to be rude and say "are you going to stay with us now?". We had been standing there at least ten minutes and the place was not overly busy. She said yes so we continued the order. Paid. Then she had difficulty assembling the order. I had to keep reminding her what we had order and actually point out the cookies, macaroons, etc. that we had ordered. One item was a large coffee for my husband who was still across the street at the Krav Maga finalizing a payment. He walked in 20 minutes later and said "WHAT is taking so long"? I told him I had no idea. I had now been waiting for the coffee for at least 15 minutes. He leans over the counter and sees the young lady wrestling with a large coffee urn. He asks - is the coffee done and somewhere else? She said no, she was still making it. Just a plain old coffee, no cream, no sugar. THe cakes do look lovely. I have bought them in the past and have also bought Thanksgiving pies but the front shop operation is just ridiculous so I won't be returning. read more

In what is an unassuming building with a small sign, I was blown away walking through the door of this beautiful bakery. Lines of tasteful designs with a massive production facility in the back. I first tried Amphora's cakes when my fiance brought back some of their Tiramisu from her office party. Hands down some of the best cake I've ever had, so I decided to pop in last Saturday and grabbed two danishes and a cupcake. If I was getting married in the DC area, this would be my go-to, since they have cake-making down to an art form, and the production facility out back to make anything I would order. Amazing desserts and coffee, good customer service at good prices, plus a large upstairs area to sit and watch the bakers. I'm glad I found this place, it's a shame I've just now found out about it after being here a year. read more

Some of us were at Reston Town Center and on the way home close to 1115 pm we decided to stop at Amphora. The service was awesome and the lady name was Karina. She was super good and amazing she was being pushed by the manager to drag us out as early as possible. The bill was $95 and we paid $15 tip for her service. Manager was obnoxious and childish and wanted to drag us out as they were closing. Well businesses like this should not even take customers at 1115 -1130 as you can't get the phone and eat it as well get done in 15 minutes. Food was okay and not too great. I've both pre-ordered cakes and bought cakes from their display and all have tasted delicious. Specifically, the strawberry shortcake. I've also had a variety of their non-cake items. They also have this chunky bar with coconut, chocolate, shortbread, the kitchen sink that is good as well. Upsetting. I called a few days in advance wanting them to simply assemble an assorted tray from the case but they won't do it. They told me I had to but the same items by the dozen which tripped me up. Can't count on them to have decent stock. They told me they'd have plenty if I got there early in the morning. I got there when they opened and there was NOTHING but yule logs and sugar cookies....their usual cake selection was non-existent and all they had was a piece or two of only three or four flavors in minis that clearly were in the case leftover from the day prior. Mind you, people go a day or two early to get their desserts for Xmas. Not happy with the poor selection and now i have a stupid looking dessert tray for Xmas..unsuitable for adults. Adults don't enjoy sugar cookies..they want pastries and cakes. Yule logs are not for small gatherings so to ONLY offer those spanning several cases is not ideal. Based on the fact they did not stock their case before opening, and, I've had these for a day already, I can already tell I will have DRY dessert for my holiday. Not happy - they've really gone down the tubes and the other reviews are the same. To be the only bakery in the area this place has an advantage......but they seem to have joined the recent "you're lucky we're open to serve you at all right now" attitude many other places have. Custom cake was blunt and had not taste at all and the quality was also very bad, these cakes are very expensive. Marvin made it obvious he couldn't care less if my questions were answered or my order was placed. I'm not certain he understood the concept of a phone conversation; I would answer his question or ask one and he would literally stay silent for 15 seconds (it happened so many times I counted). I asked more than once if he was still on the line, thinking we were disconnected, his response was 'yeah'', then back to silence. I asked multiple times if there was anyone else I could speak with, his response: 'he was the ONLY person there'. I asked to speak to his supervisor, was told they were 'out of the country'. After several more attempts he provided a name, but I don't know if it was real or not. I honestly wish I could write more about Amphora but the truth is, a friend and I sat here around 5pm on a Tuesday and no one came to give us water or even say hello for about 7 minutes (the place was almost completely empty by the way) and then when a waiter finally did come by, he was very short with us, barely said anything, then sulked off to get our water. Strike uno. The water must have come from the glaciers of Mars because it took an eternity just to get it. Strike dos. Keep in mind this place is still super dead. After we asked for another minute to decide, that's when the best part came. I caught our waiter's eye 3 times and he never once came back to check if we were ready. Eventually he just disappeared into the kitchen. Strike three (in Spanish). My friend and I got up and walked toward the door. Our waiter finally came out of the kitchen looking surprised and we told him we changed our minds. Never coming back. I couldn't justify a 25-30 minute visit just for water.
