There's no strategy you can deploy that will cut your wait time... I've tried.
Seeing a line fifty deep before 7 pm in the evening, I thought I'd come back from dinner and try my odds. While I didn't see any of the same faces at 8:15 pm (that would have been comical for I had enjoyed a leisurely meal at Bar Corvo), the line was now sixty deep... it moves reasonably fast and so no reason to despair. With five servers attending, you'll be out of there in 30 minutes or so.
I must confess I'd given up on New York ice cream places prior to this summer preferring instead to fly in ice cream from Jeni's in Ohio and occasionally Salt and Straw in Portland, with the amusing result that on any given day my freezer would more than likely have twenty pints of ice cream, but there may not be any milk in the refrigerator... Thanks to Ample Hills and Morganstern, I only have ten pints in the freezer now... hey, everyone hoards something or the other...
I also confess that I let my prejudice get in the way of appreciating Ample Hills prior to this summer. Having tried Blue Marble, Van Leeuwen, Oddfellows, and finding them all as competent but not worthy of the hype accorded to them, I ignored the legions of followers of Ample Hills Creamery. It was my loss. Quite possibly the only ice cream shop in the city that makes its own base, you can tell the quality that sets it apart from the rest. I like that they experiment with sugar and butterfat content to make sure one compensates for the other - most noticeable in the Salted Crack Caramel ice cream. While "Crack" is truly an over-used descriptor in most food reviews, Ample Hills' ice cream may actually receive the Oscar for the least exaggeration in a food item name (I'm looking at you crack pie at Momofuku...)
So, why the stinginess in withholding the 5th star? After multiple trials, I think that the customer enjoyment has less to do with the ice cream flavor(s) (that are not as intense as at top notch ice cream shops across the country, in fact with some overlap only a few of the individual flavors truly stand out) but more with the surprise of the crackle, pop, krispies, flakes, brownies, crackers, pretzels, chips, and cookie bits that provide contrast, flavor, and texture - playing a starring as opposed to a support role. Also, I liked the dark chocolate, but in terms of the texture of the ice cream itself - it's many notches below the fudge like texture of Jeni's dark chocolate.
They have possibly the friendliest and most patient servers in the city. If I were standing behind the counter and confronted with a never ending swarm of indecisive, commitment phobic customers, I'd probably rush out outside every few minutes to take a deep breath. I hope that they meditate before each work day so as to stay sane. If not, I'll leave them with the mental visual of a grown man with twenty pints of ice cream in his freezer...laughter therapy is second only to ice cream therapy. (4.5 stars) read more
