Disclaimer: I am a bit lactose intolerant and not a huge fan of sweets but for ample hills? Get me some meds and my walking shoes and I'm there! Why have I taken so long to review this place? The hype is true and if you love sweets and willing to make the journey to Brooklyn, thou shall be greatly rewarded in the form of small batch hand made ice cream. The salted crack caramel was the most memorable for me and with the big chunks of salt and other goodies, it was the perfect marriage of sweet & salty goodness. The flavors rotate and you can get little tastings but def. go with a group so you can try more. The place does get fairly crowded but by the time you get your ice cream, you should have space. It's a bit narrow and people tend to bring their children but please, leave those strollers outside. Hoist your little humans into yours arms to allow them to enjoy the quaint little sights of old fashioned ice cream making art at it's best :) Hard to find places like this who care about their product and customers and looking forward to all the good things to come for this gem! read more

OMG--salted crack caramel--need I say more? Ok, fine--snap mallow pop ice cream. Both combo on a waffle cone equals heaven in my mouth and tastebuds dancing happily all around. I also tried my friends strawberry and cream flavor and equally just as good. If you like ice cream as much as I do, be sure to go here because they do not skimp on the good stuff! There was definitely a line when we walked in the first time, but since our ramen reservation txted us while we were there, we went to have dinner first then came back again. We stopped by on a cold December evening, so naturally things were a bit quieter than I would imagine in summer (when the lines are said to be out the door). The banana and oatmeal ice cream are divine! All the flavors are so unique i couldn't make up my mind! However they let you taste and sample the ice cream which is great. My favorite flavor was the oatmeal ice cream. I enjoyed every single bite and loved the crunchy pieces inside. Service was great. Staff is super attentive and very friendly. This place gets an extra star for its commitment to the neighborhood and Greater Brooklyn despite its new non local ownership. The great location near a subway stop heavily used by people visiting the park, the retro Brooklyn store design, the special ice cream flavor for this location, all merit your support. Having acknowledged this though, I found the ice cream itself expensive for this area, and while "pretty good" I am not finding it crave worthy. There are too many flavors with pieces of cookies, candy, etc and not enough depth of flavor. It is creamy and high quality but the little candy bits are filler, and don't taste good at ice cream temperatures. I will support this business by an occasional visit and I will enjoy the ambience but the main attraction - the ice cream - will not be reason I visit. read more

This place is unreal. I wasn't much of an ice cream fan until I was given a few of their quarts as a gift and now I can't stop buying it and having it shipped to my house. The Snap Mallow Pop is incredible and I can't be without it. Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is my second favorite because the little butter cake squares are unbelievably rich and creamy. I've also had Nonnies Oatmeal Lace, PB Wins The Cup and Chocolate Milk & Cookies (it really does taste just like chocolate milk). All fantastic. On top of the delicious product, their customer service is top notch. I had a few incorrect quarts arrive in a recent order and they quickly sent me a couple quarts of what I had expected at no charge. Their response time and readiness to rectify the issue was impressive. Don't be scared away just because the price is higher than the standard grocery store freezer options. This is not hyperbole: this is possibly the best ice cream you will ever eat. I was visiting the city for work and I met a friend in the area for dinner. After dinner we decided to randomly get ice cream nearby and little did I know that I was walking into Ample Hills and walking into the most memorable ice cream ever. The store itself is inviting and oozes neighborhood charm. The staff is helpful and the energy of the store is so warm. But the highlight is the ice cream, which is just simply exceptional. My first ice cream flavors at Ample Hills included a scoop of Peppermint Patty and Brown Sugar Oatmeal. I have had probably well over a dozen different flavors since and I can honestly say I have loved every single flavor including the ones I've ordered and the ones I've made myself. Made yourself you say? Why, yes. What's great about Ample Hills is that the owner has happily shared his recipes and secrets of making ice cream and they have produced a cookbook (yes I realize this isn't pure altruism as they make $ off the sales, but still, there's no reason they need to share their recipes). I can honestly tell you that the Ample Hills' Ice Cream Cookbook is a must buy for anyone curious in making their own ice cream. After about 5-10 different batches in my kitchen I can confirm that it is not that hard to make! And even though my batches aren't as great as the ones they make at the store, I honestly think that what I make from their cookbook is better than anything you can buy from the grocery store. Simply put, Ample Hills is my favorite ice cream I've ever had. It's clear that I am not alone in this view as the store in Prospect Heights that I happened to accidentally stumble into a couple years ago has since grown into a mini Ice Cream empire with numerous outposts across the boroughs and elsewhere. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Ample Hills. Will it keep growing to meteoric heights? Will it become as ubiquitous as Ben & Jerry's in our grocery stores one-day? Perhaps that is the case, but regardless, the ice cream is exceptional and location in Prospect Heights is worth the trip. On a free HowAboutWe date, BF and I trekked over to BK to try some of "Brooklyn's Best Ice Cream". We got a hot chocolate and a latte to start - that's some expensive hot chocolate and they only have whole milk for their drinks. The fattier the better, eh? For our sundae, we chose a chocolate brownie, my sweet honey ice cream, warm caramel, and rainbow sprinkles. I noticed afterwards that our sundae was missing the fresh whipped cream they're supposed to put on there. What a bummer. Let's start with the foundation - the brownie. It was hard. And hard to eat with a spoon. Probably could have used a knife and fork, actually. Needless to say, we mostly skipped that part. Now, we move onto what would have given this place 5 stars if I had only eaten this - the HONEY ICE CREAM. I'm obsessed with honey, and more recently, honeycomb candy. Needless to say, THIS WAS AMAZING. The caramel, sprinkles, whatever. Nothing at that point could steer me away from the amazeballs of the honey ice cream. Ample Hills was at the top of our list as something new to try especially since we had most of the typical Manhattan joints. Both got the pistachio with a cone, and it was friggin fantastic. Bursting with flavor...incredible texture, creamy ice cream with very generous crunchy textures within. Mild savory tint of the nuts mixed really well with the sweetened-just-right ice cream! The shop also gave out generous samples of other flavors. We tried out the obligatory salted caramel but thought the ice cream part was way too sweet (think it was overcompensating for the saltiness) although I could definitely do one or two spoonfuls any day, just not an entire cone maybe. Both flavors were delicious and if the line hadn't been so long I would have gotten seconds. Recently I opted for the Ooey Gooey Butter Cake and Oatmeal Lace (brown sugar cinnamon ice cream w/ oatmeal lace cookies). I'm more of a savory person and like crunch, so the oatmeal flavor suited me. You can get samples. I sampled the pistachio flavor and thought it was a bit artificial tasting. I also sampled the famous salted crack caramel; it didn't cut it for me, probably because I'm not much of a caramel person. There's usually a line, but it moves quickly. They have friendly service here, and there's limited seating outside. I like the homestyle personalization of this place, and it makes me happy to know that small businesses that bring together the community still exist. read more

What else can be said? If you haven't been here, all I can say is just GO! I lucked out came here on a Sunday night and although the line was pretty long it wasn't out the door. I recommend grabbing a menu when you get inside to check out the selection. You can also sample which is nice. This ice cream is hands down delicious. The flavor combinations are exciting and different and that I can appreciate but they also have a delicious vanilla bean and dark chocolate selections for those who don't want to push the envelope. I've never physically been here and I think they've got some of the BEST ice cream in NYC. My gf got me a birthday cake from here (cookie monster) and it was the best ice cream cake I ever had. No other ice cream cake I had can compare to what Ample Hills has made. So the COOKIE MONSTER consists of (its all ice cream) Chocolate milk & Cookies + sweet cream (kinda like oreos) & Cookie bits. So good. The ice cream is smooth, creamy, rich, not cloyingly sweet, and it must have an ingredient that makes you get addicted. My gf got the 6" cake that serves 6-10 and I think I ate about half the cake until I realized I had to serve other people. Ample hills ice cream is one of the best I've tasted. If you love ice cream then you have to come here and if you love ice cream cake then you need to come here. You can place your orders 48 hrs in advance. if you get this for a friend they will love you. The ice cream is very high quality and the taste is on another level. The second time I ate this was for a celebration and this time it was the "Midwesterner" filled with Dark Chocolate Ice cream and Ooey Gooey butter cake! again I ate a good 4 slices. NO regrets. The dark chocolate is super decadent and rich. the ooey gooey butter cake bits is everything you can ask for. Not to mention each cake comes with a thick fudge bottom! If there was a 6 star ice cream this would be it... I'm waiting on yelp to unlock that like a cheat code or something. My wife and I had to go twice on a two day trip in Brooklyn. We tried 2 other ice cream places around Brooklyn, as we seek out ice cream in all our travels. But we weren't leaving without getting every bit of Ample hills goodness. I think we sampled every flavor offered. Ultimately, we got scoops of Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, Oatmeal Cookie, Milk and Cookies and a now discontinued flavor that will be sadly missed with brownies and bourbon. Don't ask me to pick which one is best. Decide whether you want vanilla or chocolate ice cream and just let it ride. All the flavors are rich and creamy, decadent, there aren't enough great food adjectives. The moment I get back to NYC we are going to Ample Hills again. Ample Hills is my favorite ice cream shop in both flavors and vibe! I highly recommend Ooey Gooey Butter Cake and Nonna's Lace Cookie, but (based on my experiences) you really can't go wrong. They have a good system for COVID times right now where they stagger the amount of people who are let in and make checkout quick so you can get outside to start enjoying your ice cream ASAP. During our latest visit (early September), this portion of Vanderbilt is pedestrian only on the weekends which makes for plenty of space to enjoy your ice cream! read more

I usually am not a fan of the salted caramel ("salted cracked caramel" is what they call it), but they have definitely changed my mind. Probably the best salted caramel ice cream I've ever had. (Everywhere I go/travel, I HAVE to visit as many ice cream parlors as possible. It has been my quest since I was in my mommy's tummy.) Before I forget, they are also extremely kid friendly.
