Had a great time here last night. They have 16 beers on tap which are well curated as to not be overweight in one particular style. The Tenderloin has turned into a hip, fun part of town. I was visiting the BM Foundation today and decided to stop by this bar. They have a nice food menu with sandwiches and flatizzas. I looked on the mirror board and saw "jello shots." I decided I had to have these. They were $1 each. I had the blue and orange jello shot. They were light on alcohol taste. No frills dive bar (and I use the term very endearingly - "dive" that is) to have a beer and a snack and catch a Giants game. Small but creative collection of beer and other beverages in fridge next to the bar. Plenty of other choices on tap. Grabbed a Pliny the Elder out of the case and a local sour to go with my giant warm soft pretzel and catch the end of a Giants game. Bartender - she was attentive and worked the small but spread out space with class, even for a "dive" bar. Check it out solo or with maybe only one friend. Food is fire. We had Prosciutto pizza and it actually made me question reality. The bartender was legit and so we tried it and Were blown away. The spot itself is very sleepy and dark and didn't even hint to having a kitchen much less a fancy Michelin star like chef hiding in the crevasses of this place. Prosciutto Pizza !! Providing an updated review since the Amsterdam moved across the street many years ago. Stopped in before a show at the GAMH...had a Pliny and a sausage. Wasn't expecting the most amazing sausage that I have ever sunk my teeth into but that's what I got. It was a chicken mango haberno I do believe with a pretzel bun, beautifully dressed and every bite was a joy. If you really want something from this gal you can pretty much just whisper one little, mystical, magical word: Mikkeller Amsterdam Cafe hosts numerous craft beer events and rare draft finds every week in addition to also being home to at least one smokin' hot lady bartender who knows her stuff. Impressed I was. I asked the babe what her poison pick would be for the evening and she mentioned it was SF Beer Week and we were in luck because that evening was their Mikkeller spotlight. Between the 2 options she threw out, I chose the one she described as "pouring like motor oil." I have no regrets... and also very little memory of the rest of the evening besides an impromptu photo shoot with a fellow beer geekster at a local adult cinema. Beyond the foxy staff, stellar beer selection, and being a dive bar with gold class personality, I LOVED the artwork on the walls. Most of it reminded me of the strange visions Homer Simpson had after her ate that crazy hot pepper at the chili cook off... but maybe with a bit more edge, of course. "I wish I could be a regular of this place!" That's what I said to the barmaid about 2 hours into my 4-hour stay at Amsterdam Cafe. Seriously, I walked in there around 3PM on a Friday afternoon, and the next thing I knew, it was 7PM and I was making my way to the bus stop in search of food. There's something about the staff and the clientele of this cafe-meets-beer-bar on a fairly-sketchy block off Geary that just sucked me in. I mean, within 10 minutes of posting up at the bar, I was noshing on an insanely tasty crawfish beignet from Brenda's around the corner. It was handed to me by a fellow patron who'd ordered too much food and graciously shared. (I wasn't even hungry, but I couldn't resist.) The vibe of the place is very real, but a welcome respite from the gritty city outside. You could almost imagine yourself in Amsterdam for a minute, with the tall ceilings and the giant mural in the entrance. It's true, the beer prices at this place are not cheap. However, all the pints were a dollar off during happy hour, which ran all the way to 7PM. This beer bar rivals any of Portland's finest beer establishments, and that's high praise coming from me. read more

We stumbled upon Amsterdam Cafe on accident, ...glad we did because it's a perfect spot to kill time during the horrendous wait at Brenda's nearby. I'm not much of a drinker, but the BF is. He was pleasantly surprised they served Golden Draak, which is hard to come by at bars down south. Their beer selection in general is very commendable (see picture) I can't confirm this (again, not a drinker), but apparently she charges $1.00-$2.00 below retail. Just make sure you have cash on you, if not there's an ATM. Altogether, it's a perfect spot for locals, but visitors like us are welcome. I came here on a late Sunday afternoon and was surprised to find that happy hour was in effect! My friend and I had $4 draft beers and sat ourselves down on the lounge seating in the back of the bar. I love how many different options for seating there are. There's the outdoor patio seating, which looks quaint and peaceful. There's the bar seating, which is great for watching the game while having easy access to the beer taps. Then there's the cushioned seating in the back (where the restrooms are) which seems good for groups. There are also TVs there too. It was pretty empty when we came here, but I can imagine that it gets pretty exciting when there is a huge game happening. This review is WAY WAY WAY overdue, and I must apologize in advance for it. This was my fiance and I's first stop after check in at our hotel in the financial district, and we seriously had the most fun time EVER! Let's back up to last November, 2009, the day before Thanksgiving. I have to love my fellow yelpers for directing me to Amsterdam Cafe. I had emailed Amsterdam Cafe to make sure they would be open the day before Thanksgiving and I was super impressed at how fast I received a reply. I was also relieved when I was told "yes! we are open!" Customer Service = A++! So it began, our extremely fun, eclectic, and scenic journey to "AC" which I will affectionately call it. I will not lie, it was a bit of a trek from the Financial District to the Tenderloin district - but being from Arizona we had plenty to look at and entertain us that it seemed more than manageable. We passed through Union Square, passed the Bloomies and the gorgeous Christmas tree and ice skating rink that reminded me of being back home in New York. We walked by shops, and hotels, and just a gorgeous array of lights and buildings. And then as we got closer to the Tenderloin district - the area became more artsy and eclectic. And we were totally cool with that. Please do not let this deter you from visiting AC. It is worth it - and it's not like we ever felt unsafe. I'd say we felt more cultured! ANYWAYS...we finally arrived and were soo happy to be there. The bar/lounge is soo freakin cool - a wonderful vibe. Dark and dimly lit, but not to the point where you have to concentrate to see. It was empty - but it WAS the day before Thanksgiving. We were greeted by the bartender - who I was super happy to find was Kellie - the gal who had responded to my email earlier that week. We began chatting - and chatting and chatting like we had been friends for years. She was soo nice and helpful - and her knowledge of craft beer really made the experience cooler. We talked about the other bars in the area, other breweries, the "Tenderloin District" you name it we discussed it. The lounge/bar itself is just wicked. There is a patio, and then, the bar. Walk further towards the back and there is a whole separate "lounge" area with a dance floor. I remember drunk texting my BFF back home about how cool it was to see a dance/lounge type of place, that played awesome music, that also served craft beer! Somehow people assume that just because we drink craft beer, we don't like to dance or party. LOL - Kellie really had it all figured out. A wonderful selection of Lagunitas, some Dogfish Head, Stone... Bear Republic. We were definitely set. Beer prices were reasonable, too - for the city. While we were there a few regulars showed up and we felt like we were natives of SF - talking it up with the locals. All in all - a fantastic experience and great start to the trip! The place is beer and wine only, which is just fine for me seeing as I am an equal opportunity drinker. The selection is pretty damn good and the prices are too. Oh, and there is an open patio out front so if you drink when you smoke or smoke when you drink or just smoke a lot there is a place for you to hang out.
