What lovely sweet people. We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon. We are currently on a journey to hike the PCT. 2650 miles of hiking. When we walked in. We were greeted kindly, and the two ladies at the desk were super helpful. Our train was delayed 5 hours, and they never got tired of us coming in every hour to check They also let us leave our packs there while we explored town. It's something we appreciate as hikers. They also have: - restrooms - water station - LOTS of travel brochures and information for Truckee and all surrounding areas I would definitely recommend stopping here for information. read more

Nice little tourist information center with Truckee gift items available for sale as well as the requisite visitor attraction cards. There is also a restroom, as well as the stop for the Amtrack for the Truckee station. Right next door is a small train museum with a docent and a mock up of a small couchette room which could be reserved on the train. read more

The Truckee train station was built in 1900 by the Southern Pacific (SP) Railroad after the original depot, built in 1869, burned down. Using local pine lumber, the basic design is similar to that used in many other SP depots and is a long, low-built, single-story structure. Renovations and modernization in 1985 altered the historical look only slightly. I been at the Truckee Amtrak station while riding on the California Zephyr route from Colfax coming East and from Reno traveling West. And whenever I'm in Truckee, I make it a point to walk into the station, look around, and admire the historical character of this place. Gayle and I have even talked about taking the train up to Truckee and spending the weekend. However, the limited number of hotel rooms within walking distance and the need to eventually have a car has put those plans on hold. read more

While on vacation to the Tahoe region, our family decided to book a short train ride from Truckee, CA to Reno, NV, mostly for our kids to get to enjoy riding a REAL train. We showed up to the Truckee station, which had ample parking, albeit paid. The inside of the station was neat - somewhere between old and dated, and "western" in decor and feel. It also had a cool little gift shop, which the kids enjoyed perusing around. There were a few bench seats in the room, but do know that the indoor waiting area is fairly small. Not that there's an enormous amount of people boarding the Amtrak in Truckee, CA on any given day anyway... Any of you with airport-style check in and security expectations will be pleasantly surprised at how amiable the experience will be of simply walking through the station, onto the train platform, and into the train. Not sure what the security implications are in that, however, it was extremely refreshing not to be strip-searched and treated as guilty-before-proven-innocent. Truckee station (Lake Tahoe) a very nice small station with a few basic services; there's an enclosed waiting area with restrooms, however there are no ticketing services or ticket kiosk, no checked baggage or staff, no long term or disabled parking here. This particular train station also provides good access to not only Lake Tahoe below and as well the mountain snows above and all the winter/spring outdoor activities available in the area. This station is a stop on the California Zephyr route and can be quite busy at times during peak seasons. 3.5 Stars - rounded up for good access to the area and it serves it's purpose. 00387 read more

I was in Truckee for the weekend. I had the opportunity to stop into the Welcome Center in downtown.  I had a question. There was a woman, Marilyn, behind the counter. I suppose she is a volunteer.  She waited a full ten minutes to acknowledge me, though there was no one else waiting and though she kept her back to me, she was well aware of my presence. Others in the center noticed, looked at me and shrugged.  Seemingly, Marilyn was discussing travel arrangements with her travel agent on the Welcome Center phone, at one point she asked her agent to hold so she could ring her husband, which by area, but I would suggest that she is ill-suited to work in a Welcome Center.  I have not encountered such rude behavior in ages and, I was quite taken aback by it. read more

Truckee, CA (TRU) Serving the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville with one train a day in each direction. This is a very popular site for tourists because of the close proximity to Lake Tahoe. Truckee is well connected to the surrounding area with the TART bus system. Why I give this four stars is that, even though it doesn't have a lot of services, it has other services that many other stations don't have. The station has a huge rack of visitor information brochures on what to do while you're in the area. It also has a museum about the railroad. The train times are fit so if you'd like, you could take the train to the Bay Area or Sacramento, stay a night or more, and return to Truckee or Lake Tahoe. If you plan in advance, it could coat as low as $40-50 (6-7.5hrs) from Truckee to San Francisco, $30 (4.5hrs) to Sacramento, $70 (12hrs) to Salt Lake City, $100 (27hrs) to Denver, or $120 (46hrs) to Chicago. If you travel as far as Denver, Chicago, or even Salt Lake City, I'd recommend getting a bed due to the longer hours of travel. *All of this information has been last updated in November 2018, and may not be accurate as of a day much later then 2018. read more

My husband and I took a train ride from Sacramento to Truckee just because...the views, not too long a trip, good way to try train travel, a great overnight getaway..all the above. The station is a plus, it is charming and a nice surprise was the visitors center that is inside, that gave us a great place to ask questions and get answers. We will visit again! The River Street Inn is just a quick walk away and the perfect place to stay for a short trip that didn't involve partaking in the snow activities. read more

Today 7/24 5pm got the worst customer service ever. The manager and an employee made feel like l was at fault. I had bought a Greyhound ticket few weeks ago, l didn't use. I asked the employee who sold me the ticket if l could use it in the future or if it had en expiration date. She said that l could use it. Today, I wanted to use it but they told me l couldn't and insisted that it was a misunderstanding. I understood clearly that l could use it. Even the employee said that it looks like the ticket was sold after hours. I said ok, what's the point. And she responded, it looks like you are complaining because the employee who sold you the ticket was doing you a favor... ughh... read more

Took Amtrak from martinez station to truckee for one of the worst experiences in travel. It took us 6 hours due to several unplanned stops to wait for freight trains. The bathrooms were filthy. The train was crowded and since this was during the pandemic it felt very unsafe. The station itself in Truckee is not at issue. People should be warned about the extra time this route takes. read more

Useful stop for those who want to go skiing in the winter - rental cars available close by. Also for those who want to just head for Lake Tahoe and avoid Reno - we like going to Reno and then Lake Tahoe, but in winter the snow will determine your course. read more

I have had the worst experience on my trains going from Sacramento, Ca to Reno, Nevada on Amtrak trains 5 & 6. The people working on the dining car have had such a sour attitude when I ask simple questions about what times meal times are. Isn't that their job? They act like anyone and anything is a bother to them. They're in the people business, therefore they need to have better customer service. I am disgusted by the way I've been talked to. I showed up to the dining car at 12:10 asking what time lunch would be served because we hadn't heard anything about it. When I asked she just replied "12:30" nothing else. Then I said "Oh okay, thank you. We'll be back around then." Then she stopped me before I could finish to say that I need to wait for their announcement for lunch and that it was first come first serve. So we waited for their announcement that never came. So annoying. And then we showed up to the dining car to see what was going on at 12:40 to a FULL car of eaters. Then we were told that we needed to be put on a waiting list. The lack of communication and patience of the workers on this train has truly stunned me. I will never be riding with Amtrak again and for anyone reading, be forewarned that the people they have working at Amtrak are some of the rudest people I've ever come into contact with. Some of these people I would never approach if I didn't have to ask a question because they would be the only ones who would know the answer. read more
