Pretty good brunch spot. They were popular on a Memorial Day holiday - we waited 20 mins for an outside table. Good varied menu. They have all the classic brunch items. We ordered huevos rancheros which was really good. It came with tortilla chips and that really helped. Also they gave an entire avocado! Half inside , half outside. The staff was attentive. The only downside is it's next to an Amtrak railway (hence the name). We had a sleeping toddler in the stroller and the loud bursts of the horn woke her up. I have been here before and thought the food was good so I didn't hesitate to recommend this to my husband for dinner one night- granted I had been here about 25 years ago prior. Love the idea of this place, it was quiet and had the place to ourselves it seemed. The service was fantastic! But the food fell a little short of our expectations! The banana milkshake was great. The burgers were good according to my husband and son but the BLT was such a disappointment and the onion rings had burned bits all in the bottom of the tray. I don't like their "plates"- not sure how they clean and maintain the cutting board they serve the food on but seems like a breeding ground for bacteria? Just not a fan. I was hoping after being on Diners Drive-ins and Dives that the quality should be there, even something as simple and basic as a BLT should be stellar or just take it off of the menu. Stopped in here for brunch. Saw it before and thought I give it a try. Very unique looking building. Very old school looking!! Service was excellent. Looked like 3 very young looking kids were working here. 1 girl and 2 guys. All 3 ran this place very efficiently!!! They look like they are barely 18 if that. A 4th girl showed up while we were eating. She was young also but had no interactions with her. Only the initial three. Our table enjoyed their meals. Nothing to complain about. Everything was good. Food be pricey in Truckee and in most cases pretty average. And while I would say Jax is in line with those sentiments, it still was a fun, nostalgic meal out with their train car vibes and fairly big portions. We sadly missed brunch by a bit, so we had to do lunch. The kids pizza was saucy and honestly not kid friendly at all since I feel like most kids hate tomato sauce. The kids burger came as 2 sliders and were fine. My corned beef has was huge, salty, but on the fattier side. It was solid, but I probably wouldn't order again. My husband's blt was pedestrian but fine. Overall, solid. I think one comes here for breakfast or the huge burgers, which next time I think I'd try. We stayed right across the street from Jax and decided to stop in for lunch. We ordered the clam chowder and a beef dip sandwich to share. The clam chowder was excellent--just the way my wife likes it. It was on the soupier side with bacon, celery, plenty of clam meat, and just the right amount of potatoes. Definitely something we'd order again. The beef dip, unfortunately, was pretty lackluster. The sandwich was simply sliced roast beef without much flavor, and the au jus was also very mild. I ended up adding some flavor crystals (salt) just to bring it up to "meh." On the positive side, the fries were good. Overall though, it's not something I'd recommend or order again. The staff was great. When our server heard we were sharing, they kindly split the sandwich and fries onto two plates for us, which we appreciated. We'd probably return at some point. The corned beef hash was some of the best i've had - really tasty and the corned beed was more in chunks rather than shredded which i like better The chicken with the chicken and waffles was excellent - very tasty AND MOIST ! With the chicken and waffle plate they almost give you too much food ( waffle, chicken, 2 eggs and plenty of bacon. Could easily split that for 2 people. We were greeted with waters but it took a while for the waiter to come back to actually take our food order. The southern fried steak was not good the crust slips right off and the steak wasn't that tender-cut-with-fork I typically have with country fried steak, I also tried to swap the country potatoes in for the hash browns but they don't allow that. This place looked so cute, and we chose to come here rather than the food trucks in downtown. What a mistake! We were seated quickly, but that was the only positive. Once we got service, it took forever for the server to take down our order--granted we were a party of 7, but each person's order seemed to be a challenge. After 6 of us ordered, the "iPad died", and we had to wait again for a new ipad and go through the painful ordering process all over again. Our drinks were delivered to the wrong table. Our food came out 1 or two plates at a time, with several minutes between each delivery....except for two orders, one that never came out. One late order was simply an Oreo shake--and when it finally came out it went to the wrong table, and the second order that never came was 3 tacos. After the rest of us were done eating, the final meal was delivered. The food fair at best--the fish and chips were mostly batter, scant fish and NO CHIPS (not one!). We asked 3 times for our bill, and when it finally came we were charged twice for an order of sweet potato fries and an 18% gratuity for the worst service we've ever had. We paid our bill at the front, and asked for the second order of fries we didn't order to be taken off the bill (which they were), and also asked for the tacos that didnt come out until the rest of us were done eating to be comped (it was $9, but in light of the 18% added gratuity we felt that was fair). They REFUSED to comp the tacos, telling us they were "busy", which was ridiculous! We love to support local businesses, but this one is a definite do not return. read more

Waffle was just a normal waffle. AMBIANCE: very cute, 50s diner vibe. In a nice location but keep in mind that the noise amplifies in here and many people take their kids here so it can be loud. SERVICE: Warning: I had a hair in my food and they were not super apologetic about it but they made me a new serving supposedly. It's a busy area, but there was a fairly good-size parking lot right next to Jax, and we all found parking on President's Day morning. After the bizarre shortage of eggs (grocery stores were sold out all weekend), we were all craving some lol! I was feeling adventurous and built my own omelette with goat cheese, bacon, and jalapenos. Also ordered their home made English muffin, and everything was delicious. Service was excellent! Came here with a large group and the place was able to fit all of us and were accommodating. While we didn't all sit at one table we were in 3 booths all next to each other. I got an Irish coffee. I'm used to it coming in a mug with a dollop of cream on top but this came in a milkshake glass with a huge amount of cream on top. Weirdly it didn't come with a straw but the server was nice and got me one. The breakfast menu had a mix of omelettes, a monte Cristo, hashes, Benedict's, etc. I was quite happy with my dish. I got an all day addiction which was basically a tasty salad on top of hash browns. The salad had a balsamic dressing and came with some roasted tomatoes. What has happened to this place? We stayed in Truckee for a week over New Years and ate here 3 times because it was so good. We went back today while driving to Tahoe and everything was terrible. We waited nearly 20 minutes for someone to take our order and 25 minutes for our food to arrive. I had to ask for water 4 times and when they finally brought me a glass it was just one for me, none for my husband and kids. Now let me talk about the food....my son ordered the silver dollar pancakes that was on the kids menu. He received two huge pancakes, not the end of the world, but it's not what he ordered. My other son's grilled cheese came out 10 minutes later than our food - pretty bad when he's already waited 25. The corned beef hash that my husband ordered - one of their specialties was gross, not like it was six months ago. The vibe of the place is really nice. It feels like an authentic diner, and offers good seating arrangements. When I went it was barely busy, with only about 6 tables taken. The only waiter walked right passed me without offering me a seat or handing me a menu. I stood around for a bit before I decided to grab a menu and sit myself down. Food was good and bad at the same time, service was generally pretty quick, and an ok ambiance. My group was sat quickly and the busser was quick to get drink orders in. They came out very fast. Two waters had bits floating in them...so that's a minus. Before we even got a chance to sip our Bloody Marys, the food was out. Literally like 5 minutes for 6 entrees. Alarmingly fast. Food was lukewarm...like it had already been prepared and they just food lining it. I got the country fried steak, wife got the BLT . Worst country fried steak I've ever had. The meat was absolutely god awful. The worst grade, unsalted, looked gray like it was boiled, & chewy. Just terrible. To give you an idea it took like 10 saws to try to cut through it which just shreds it to hell and makes Sunny side up eggs were perfect, hashbrowns were decent, and the homemade jam was a nice touch. Not too sweet like the commercial jam packets. The BLT had no mayo. Literally just bacon, tomato, and lettuce with burnt toast. wtf. So just a dry ass sandwich. Fries were OK. Overall the food was just meh. Check is confusing if you have a larger party. The tip was added, which is fine, but I like how if you didn't notice, another line is there for additional tip in which the suggested amounts don't even add up to the amount automatically added. Service was very quick and attentive which brings it up. Maybe we went on a bad day, but with as many breakfast spots as there are in the area, this place a pass for me. read more

We wanted to try a new place traveling through Truckee. We walked in and the seating hostess took our name and phone number telling us a 15 minute wait. We sat outside waiting for our number or name to be called and nothing. We watched people and more people walk up and they were all being seated right away. 30 minutes later we walked in, sat down waiting for someone to acknowledge us. Another party of 3 that had just walked in said they were told 10 minutes wait and their cell phone chimed that their table was ready. We still had not been called or acknowledged. We brought it to the attention of the seating hostess, the other two employee listened to what we were saying.
