I've had Amura on my list of places to try for a while, and what better way to spend a Friday night than with sushi. We arrived around 7:30pm and placed our order about 10 minutes later. Since it was a busy Friday night, the wait was a little long, we didn't get our food until about 8:30pm. But let me tell you, it was worth the wait!!! We ordered the Tuna & Salmon Sashimi (sadly the Yellowtail was sold out), along with the Wasabi Roll, Fire Cracker Roll, Rainbow Roll, Virginia Beach Roll, and Spicy Salmon Roll. Every single bite was phenomenal! The fish was fresh, the rolls were all unique but very tasty, and my friend and I literally ate every last piece lol. The staff was kind enough to let us enjoy our meal even though they close at 8:30pm, yet they suggested we come earlier on Fridays if we want to thoroughly enjoy the dine-in experience without feeling rushed. The restaurant itself is fairly small, it only had about 5 tables and a bar area, but you can tell it's a local's favorite and now it's officially one of my favorites as well lol. I'll definitely be back soon. The sushi here is absolutely top-tier. Just FYI, don't get tricked by the GPS, it might direct you to the stores alongside Shore Drive. I came in with a friend on a Friday night (9/12/25). It was a little busy and, since we arrived about an hour before closing, things were a little hectic. Regardless, the staff was friendly and fully accommodated us during our entire visit. Amura is one of those spots that doesn't look like much upon first glance, but their focus on food and service makes this essentially a hole-in-the-wall gem. I must stress, this place isn't jacked up or anything (the venue is clean, organized and works perfectly for what they want to achieve service-wise), but the aesthetic belies its incredible sushi and friendly service. Also, although Amura has a Shore Dr address, it is located the Chic's Beach Shopping Center, but is on the Please House Rd side of the strip mall. If you don't know that portion of VB, it may initially be confusing. The items we ordered (btw, ordering is a little old school - they provide menus, but you order on a separate sheet of paper using an also-provided writing utensil) and enjoyed were: Tuna Sashimi Salmon Sashimi Wasabi Roll Fire Cracker Roll Rainbow Roll Virginia Beach Roll Spicy Salmon Roll Let me tell you, I haven't enjoyed sushi this much in ages. That's partially on me because I've defaulted to dining at the acye a la carte sushi spots. Also, a few months ago, nearby Misako took sushi off their menu (if you're wondering, I'm afraid it's permanent... at least for an extended hiatus), so I was left to find a new go-to for sushi. Regardless, we devoured ALL the sushi we ordered, which was impressive since my appetite isn't nearly what it used to be. But Amura's fish is so fresh, and their flavors meld so well with the fish, that I couldn't help myself. Along with fantastic and gorgeous company, this visit to Amura was top shelf. This is the best sushi in the beach by far !! We are trying to get them to open up another store in a more centralized location but it would be bad because we would want to eat there every day! We still end up there at least twice a month. The owner/waitress is hilarious, has a great sense of humor, and is very personable. The restaurant is very clean and vibey. A 3 star review seems a little harsh, but I am giving it based on the time we waited for our food along with the quality of the fish. We came here for dinner during the week and the restaurant was full, but we were sat right away at the bar seating. There are not many tables maybe 5-6. The restaurant seems to be run by a husband and wife team (wife did the waitressing and husband was the chef). My husband and I both ordered the combo that came with sashimi, nigiri, and a California roll. We waited well over 30 minutes to receive our food. Another sushi chef could be really beneficial here. The restaurant was clean and the fish was all well wrapped in plastic and everything seemed sanitary. However, the quality of fish, the ahi specifically, was just off. The salmon and yellowtail seemed fine but the ahi was just not defrosted/thawed correctly or something, and even then was just not the best quality. When I squeezed it there was liquid that came out of it and I've never seen that happen before (and I've eaten a LOT of sashimi). With all that being said, I'm not trying to hate on the place. The hostess who took our order and took our payment was not very friendly to us with two young kids: first when I asked for 2 high chairs she said my skinny 4year-old boy shouldn't use a high chair (but the regular chairs are too low for him), then when I ordered a big bowl of miso soup to share with my two little kids and asked for two small bowls to share, she said I should have ordered two small bowls instead of a big bowl them two small bowls to share......The other hostess was great and so friendly getting what we asked for and played with my kids. Food: I have no idea how this place got such great reviews, the sashimi and sushis with raw fishes were not fresh at all; we ordered the sushi combo for convenience, the himachi (yellowtails) tastes like mud and not fresh, the tuna (maguro) was frozen for too long and the texture was damaged, it retained a lot of liquid from the frozen process, and the cut was tough with tendon. The salmon was the best. No criticism for the ambiance, it's a casual place. Since we're only tourist and will not likely be coming back we didn't make any complaints at the spot, but I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Amura Sushi Cafe opened in June of 2020 in the shopping complex that intersects Pleasure House Road with Shore Drive. It is owned by a Korean couple who used to own a 24-hour sushi chain in Austin, Texas. They had planned to open earlier, but COVID-19 delayed their plans. This particular spot is found in the small section of the complex that runs parallel to Pleasure House Road and is right around the corner from Kim's Bahn Mi & More. This is a small and compact sushi spot housing 5 rectangular dining tables with six seats each. I counted 5 seats at their sushi bar. Their menu is small as well and has been downsized since they first opened. Their original menu listed sections for Donburi, Teriyaki, Fried Rice, and Katsu, which no longer appear on their current menu. Their early Yelp photos also feature a Ramen dish and Tuna Tataki, which no longer appear as well. Their one page one sided menu now sticks mostly to sushi. After three lunch time visits, I have tried the following: MISO SOUP: Listed as one of their three Appetizers, which also includes Edamame and a 12-piece Sashimi sampler, I ordered the large size. This might be the best Miso Soup I have ever tasted. Their dashi stock delivered a rich depth of flavor, enhanced by an abundance of tofu, scallion, and dried kelp.. My Rating: 5 Stars. TUNA POKE BOWL: This was listed as one of their four Poke Bowl offerings and was described by my server as tuna with a variety of vegetables over a layer of sushi rice. My server asked me if I wanted the spicy version or the regular version. I told her that I wanted the spicy version, but with no mayonnaise, which is condiment that has never agreed with me. She told me that I would have to get the regular, as their spicy version comes with mayonnaise. So, I went ahead and ordered their regular version, a bit disappointed that I would have to do without the spice. On a side note, the late celebrity chef and food author, Anthony Bourdain, strongly believed that mayonnaise does not belong anywhere near raw fish and advised against ordering any sushi selection that includes it. The sushi bowl was huge and included ample chunks of high quality grade tuna that delivered a fresh and pleasant taste. The other ingredients were a bit of a disappointment. There was no seaweed salad in the mix, which is one of my favorite ingredients in a poke bowl. Instead, there was an overabundance of plain lettuce that overwhelmed the mixture. I had never encountered plain lettuce in a traditional poke bowl before, and I was tasting it all the way home. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. COMBO POKE BOWL: Even though their Tuna Poke Bowl was a disappointment, I decided to give this one a shot during my second visit. It came with a mix of Tuna, Shrimp, and Salmon. I had better luck this time. With a stunning presentation, the Shrimp and Salmon delivered a greater balance of flavors in combination with the other ingredients. The lettuce was still there, but it was not overwhelming. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. SUSHI COMBO B: 6 Pieces of Chef's Choice Nigiri and California Roll. I am not a fan of the California Roll and substituted it with the Tuna Roll listed under their Traditional Maki Rolls. I like my sushi rolls prepared in the more traditional style with the seaweed on the outside instead of on the inside. Sushi rolls prepared with the seaweed on the inside and the rice on the outside are known as Uramaki or "inside out" rolls and are an American invention. The California Roll is believed to be the original Uramaki roll, originating in Los Angeles during the 1960s. The Nigiri pieces consisted of Salmon, Red Snapper, and Yellowfin Tuna. They all delivered a high quality taste and silky texture. The Yellowfin Tuna was especially buttery and was my favorite of the three. For my tastes, there was a bit too much rice in the Nigiri pieces. I like to eat a piece of Nigiri in one bite and had a hard time doing so with these. The Tuna Roll was fine taste wise, but once again, the pieces were packed with more rice than I wanted. American style sushi tends to be prepared in larger pieces and more packed with rice than Japanese style sushi. At least, I left feeling full. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. My service was very friendly with each visit. I would come back to try their Miso Soup again, and I would like to try their Sushi Sashimi Combo, once again swapping out their California Roll for their Tuna Roll. I would also try their Tuna Tataki if they ever bring it back. Most of their Specialty Rolls don't entice me, as they tend to be served Uramaki style with the seaweed on the inside. A number of them also come with mayonnaise and cream cheese, which is yet another non-traditional ingredient I don't like in a sushi roll. My food numbers averaged out to a strong 4-star composite rating, but it was not quite enough to round upward. When it comes to sushi, my personal preferences lean toward a more traditional Japanese style. read more

Great sushi spot! I moved here recently from Hawaii, where amazing sushi is on every corner and I have been missing it. Amura had great reviews so I had to stop by to satisfy my craving! The owners are a lovely couple that seem to run the place pretty much independently. The gentleman was preparing sushi and his wife was taking care of all the tables. I ordered two of their specialty rolls; the Sushi on the Beach roll and the Cherry Blossom roll. It was a great combination, both rolls very different but balanced each other. Best sushi you will eat in the area. Period. The poke bowl is ridiculous, too. The biggest, freshest, tastiest poke bowl you will find on the East Coast. Get the combo poke bowl. Just huge chunks of fresh salmon, tuba, and shrimp with some greens underneath, and rice underneath that. They will give you the sauce on the side, and that sauce was yummy goodness. The restaurant has a super relaxed vibe. TV screens are filled with exotic location videos. They also play jazz cafe music, which is a nice touch. The menu is simple, and you have a checklist with a pen and you just write the quantity you want. The yellowtail tasted like butter. Just melts in your mouth. The spicy scallops is perfectly sweet and spicy. I ate a lot of different things, and they all hit the mark. I am officially crowning Amura Sushi Cafe the BEST sushi in the Norfolk/VB area! Nestled in on the side of a strip mall, you might just miss it if you're not looking hard enough! Parking is plentiful with spots directly outside, as well as a full parking lot for the strip mall. Inside, there are only a few tables, so avoid going during peak dining times or there might be a wait. The restaurant is clean and modern. Once seated, you're presented with a paper menu and pen where you can mark the quantities of every item you want. Once the server comes and reads it back to you, it's time to sit back and wait in anticipation! We recommend the house and seaweed salads, the Temptation, Sushi on the Beach, and of course the Fire Cracker Roll! Even the small portion of the House Salad is HUGE, definitely enough for two people. The lettuce is fresh, and it's DRENCHED in their yummy house dressing. It must be made in-house because I've never had a dressing like that. Absolutely phenomenal. Now on to the rolls: heavenly. Amura is obviously going to be more expensive than an AYCE sushi place, but the QUALITY is absolutely worth the price. No weirdly-warm rolls here! (You know exactly what I'm talking about). Our FAVORITE is the Fire Cracker roll. It has flaming hot Cheeto dust ontop, which pairs perfectly with the cream cheese inside. It's unlike any sushi roll we've ever had. Stopped in for lunch and purchased the following: edamame, house salad (delicious ginger dressing!), 2 avocado + cucumber rolls, Volcano 1 roll (great spice/heat kick), and a Philadelphia roll. I've noticed in the area that rolls are prepared with a larger circumference, they are a wider bite than I've been accustomed to. Given that, some places will fill most of the rolls up with rice but not at Amura. Their rolls are large and filled with all the yumminess. My fiance and I went for his birthday dinner. We have tried a few places in Va Beach/Norfolk for sushi, and it was our first time coming. My friends have raved about this place and figured, it's a perfect time to go celebrate! My fiance is a HUGE sashimi fan so we had to order poke bowl and a love boat full of his favorite sashimis. We got salmon poke bowl (OMG to DIE for! The dressing/sauce they use is delicious!), salmon, tuna, tuna belly, and yellow fish sashimi. The chef was so amazing with his skills and the service was impeccable. The restaurant started to quickly fill up and we can understand why! I am not a reviewer very often but I had to for this place. Def the best sushi I've had in all Of Hampton roads. I know a lot of people have "the best place" for sushi but I dare you to give this place a try and not say it's your new best spot for sushi. It's def the freshness and the quality of the ingredients they choose. Especially the fish. As well as the ratios in their rolls. Too many places try to make their rolls seem larger by just loading it with rice. I cant stand over riced rolls. They do have some apps as well as other things not mentioned on the website or on the menu photos. They have miso soup and house salads(this is a must!) among others. Which I was worried they didn't. Hampton Roads isn't know for great eating, but when you find the small, local gems, it's wonderful to see them flourish so they stick around. This is absolutely one of those spots.
