I Was Looking for sushi near the Pembroke area and found this gem! It's located off Independence Boulevard, and I really liked how private the booth seating was inside. Honestly, I didn't expect much going in, but I left super satisfied. I'm not sure if it was just the timing or if they're always this generous, but we ended up getting a lot of extras on the house, and I felt so appreciated. LOL! We ordered from their $20 roll combo menu, which includes two sushi rolls, and the amount of food was very reasonable for the price. On top of that, they gave us free spring rolls and even cute little cheesecakes as a treat! I have mixed feelings about Yamachen's, because the service was impeccable, as was the set up for takeout. We ordered a beautiful array of sushi to take to the beach for a sunset picnic and had high expectations to the stellar reviews on Yelp. We ordered a few specialty rolls, some nigiri sushi, and a spicy yellowtail roll. In addition, we ordered gyoza. The way they packaged all of the items was fabulous. I've never had such care given to the setup for a takeout order. High quality trays with pockets for soy sauce, super high end chopsticks and napkins, each tray labeled with the items within. For that and the service via phone, I applaud this place and would give it another try. Food-wise, none of the sushi WOWed us. My favorite was my spicy yellowtail roll, which had nice chunks of fresh yellowtail and perfectly ripe avocado. I also liked the salmon nigiri. The dream roll was delicious, but I got quite a few bites of crab shell, which was a turnoff so I didn't finish that roll and it felt like a waste of money. In addition, the rolls and nigiri with tuna tasted off. I thought it was just me, but my friend also mentioned something so we both skipped the rest of those pieces. The decorations and the look of the restaurant was beautiful. A small location, but that added to the charm and character. The service was great and the waitress was super attentive. She also provided a spring roll and cheesecake on the house. Both were great samples of how good their food is. The sushi was delicious and really fresh and well made. The deepfries volcano roll was so flavorful and the crunch was so serious. Alsmost as if i was eating an eggroll. Would have given 5 stars. But felt like the wait time was quite lengthy. Been coming here since they opened, but haven't been back due to pandemic. Had several solid visits prior to March 2020. I used to work in the area so it was convenient. Recently started coming back for dinner w/ my daughter. While there are several Yama locations, this has been my favorite. The ambiance is as vibrant as it was when they opened, service is great, and the sushi is mouth watering! It was good then and even better now. I found out from the our waitress that the chef's name is Chef Calvin who's been with them since the location opened. That explains why I still enjoy it! We usually start with miso soup which has been consistent & ok. IMO, it's needs just a little more umami, but perfect temperature for a cold day. We've tried the following rolls: Earthquake, Iron Man, Twin Tower, Yankee, Rainbow, Spicy Salmon, and Super Duper. All have been delicious. The fish tastes fresh and the rice cooked & seasoned perfectly. The rolls seem a lot bigger than other sushi places and compared to prior visits. They're totally worth the money. I usually can't finish and end up bringing some home. Definitely sign up for their rewards program! Pre-COVID, they'd give rolls. Now, it's earned through rewards which come quickly. We had two offers back-to-back, one free roll and then a free roll combo. Not bad at all and we do get free spring rolls, edamame, and dessert when we dine in. Not sure about take out orders though. My husband & I came here for Valentine's Day dinner. We haven't gone on a date for vday in years and I'm SO glad we came here! The food was amazing, we got a few rolls and entrees but our favorite roll was between the spicy tuna roll or the crazy volcano roll. The best of the whole night was definitely the tuna tataki. We've been here a dozen times or so and we absolutely love this place. The sushi is very good but we love the service we get here. The owners are extremely friendly and hand out gifts and free food. They also brought us complementary edamame, spring rolls, and cheesecake bites, which were delicious! The location is unassuming, but at least it was easy to park and the ambiance inside was welcoming. The edamame was cold and the cucumber salad was just cucumber and rice vinegar, both of which were fine but unexpected, but the spring rolls were warm, crispy, and right on point. The sushi selection was good, and we really enjoyed our rolls. They were fairly standard, but the freshness of the salmon really stood out to me and made their Alaska roll the favorite of the night. I ordered from this location a few times and the quality of sushi is good for the price. The reason why I'm giving three stars is because I'm disappointed with the Iron Man roll. I told her that does not sound right or should be posted online, so I paid for it anyways. About 10 minutes later food was ready . I took it back to my office and open the earthquake roll . When I took my first bite it taste completely rancid like old fishy taste I was extremely upset . Well I still had the salmon sashimi but the pieces where kinda thin. If i lived in the area, i would be a regular. This was some of the most delicious sushi i've ever had, with so many different rolls to choose from. I ordered the $19.95 combo with the dancing roll and the spicy California roll. The rice was so gooey and fresh, and all the ingredients of the filling paired well. The dancing roll was a specialty roll and was fried all the way around the rice, to give it a crispy salty exterior. Too good. In addition to their amazing food, they give you free stuff!! What a wonderful place to dine and relax! During the holidays when things get a bit crazy, it's so nice to find a warm, cozy place to dine without all the hubbub. The exterior beckons with bright, warm lights to come in and relax while you dine. It was beautifully decorated with Christmas decor, lit reindeer and trees. There is a beautifully lit Christmas tree that greets you as you enter the cozy establishment. The waiter and waitress were so kind and friendly and promptly took our drink orders. This has been our go to sushi spot for the last 2 plus years. Consistently very good and often excellent. 3 weeks ago we ordered on a Wednesday night and it was the first time we ever threw some of our food away. The fish was old and smelly, the cucumber salad was soft and slimy and everything was drenched in sauce in a poor attempt to mask the sub par quality. It was one bad experience out of a hundred so we chalked it up to a fluke and decided not to order on weekdays anymore. Fast forward to Friday night a few weeks later we decided to give them another chance since we had a coupon from our last order being so bad. It had to just be one out of character visit right? Wrong. Same slimy smelly fish but this time the rolls were complete mush sitting in a puddle of who knows what at the bottom of the trays. Everything tasted the same and none of it good. Even the shrimp tempura tasted like the fry oil hadn't been changed in a week or more. It pains me to post this review since the staff is always friendly, the orders are always correct and they have provided many memorable meals during Covid. They even throw in a free cheesecake or Gyoza every time you order but 2 terrible visits on different nights of the week a few weeks apart is enough to say goodbye. You were once a shining beacon amongst the myriad of indistinguishable sushi spots in Hampton roads. Too bad Yama Chen Independence has gone in the completely opposite direction. read more
