Authentic sushi in a casual setting. Rolls were delicious and well prepared. Menu was large with good options and a few specials. The main thing that set this restaurant apart was the service. The waitress was attentive and also they gave me an extra small Alaska roll on the side and even a free piece of cheesecake at the end. Everyone was so friendly and seemed very genuine. Yes Yes Yes!!! Best food in Virginia sushi was so fresh and the flavors blended sooo nicely, ramen was delicate and delightful! Gyoza was the best ever definitely freshly made dough soo fresh light and exquisite. Sake was soo fun we got the sake flight and there was so many fun flavors lychee,peach,apple and mystery! Soo good and fun! Service was perfect! Very smart, kind and considerate waiters! They continuously gave us more and more on the house gifts!! So generous great people! Just arrived in town and did a quick search for a sushi spot on a Tuesday night. The place was empty except for the hostess who also was our waitress and two working at the sushi bar. We assumed it was a slow weeknight and decided to stay. Shortly thereafter, we greatly regretted our decision to stay. While the waitress/hostess was perfectly nice the food was the worse I've ever had, anywhere. I am not a picky eater and don't like to complain. I usually try to make the best of it but there was just no saving this meal. My wife and I ordered Kani Salads which arrived as a piles of poorly pulled apart Kani sticks drizzled sparingly with spicy mayo. That's it. Not a cucumber in site. No masago. I've never seen a Kani salad made like this in my 45 sushi eating years. It was disgusting. Imitation crab on a plate with mayo. Then out came the sushi rolls we ordered. The spider roll which is made with soft shell crab, was warm upon delivery, didn't stay together and the crab was soggy. Not even a hint of tempura on what is traditionally fried. I was pulling out rolled up soggy, from frozen and defrosted crab claws out of the roll. Gross. My spice tuna roll was just large chucks of chopped up tuna with avocado. They slathered the top with spicy mayo and that's what they called a spicy tuna roll??? My wife ordered a shrimp tempura roll which also arrived warm and falling apart. It was like they took freshly fried shrimp and didn't allow it to cool or drained of oil before rolling it up in nori and rice. The waitress was very sweet and brought us a Hawaii roll on the house. It was also warm and unappetizing. She also brought us two little pieces of cheese cake on the house. I don't know if this was their regular practice or if the waitress knew we were not enjoying the meal but we had totally lost our appetite. We promptly paid our bill and got out of there as fast as possible. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Service here is friendly and professional. The ambiance as soon as you walk in is relaxing and inviting and you feel like you've stepped into a different world. It has a very traditional Japanese feel to it. You get a small plate of edamame as a complimentary snack, and there are several beverages between sake, wine, tea, etc. I've had several different rolls there and none of them disappointed! Not many people inside for a Friday night, I was very surprised because the service and food was too notch! Before ordering my food, I was served edamame which was tasty, Im still a little unsure how to eat it because it kept popping the little beans all over the table. Anyways, I ordered the two roll special and added the salad as well. I was impressed with how many pieces of sushi came out and the salad was a good portion, I love the dressing that come with it, it has a peanut flavor to it along with onions. We went here with two other friends. The service was really good, and our waitress was super kind. The inside is decorated nicely giving it a cool vibe. The sushi regular was good, and the spicy tuna roll was yummy. My husband got the earthquake roll and the dragon roll. It was all very tasty. The dumplings and egg rolls were classic. The egg rolls were a bit mushy on the inside. I also felt the sushi had a lot of rice. And I believe the avocado pieces were too big. Looked up this restaurant on Yelp and saw that it got good reviews. Went to their website and saw they have their own app and rewards program. I downloaded the app and signed up for their rewards. It was so easy using their app and very convenient to place an order. We got a combo and other various rolls. They also threw in veggie egg rolls on the house! Thanks :) The sushi was so good. It definitely the spot. We loved everything that we ordered. It was fresh and very tasty. The salad dressing was also very good and not runny like some other sushi restaurants. Had a hankering for sushi tonight and boy did this place hit the spot!! Ordered takeout from them right during the dinner rush and was worried it might take long... nope!! They had my order ready and packaged in no time. They even threw in some delicious extras to try! These rolls are no joke. They are generously filled and jam packed with flavor. It's a detriment to my wallet that my favorite VB sushi spot is a mile from work. My coworkers and I order from or visit at least once every couple of weeks. It doesn't matter if the place is packed or empty, the service is always top notch and we never wait too long for our orders. The sushi is tasty - great flavor options and a long (almost too long) list of specialty roll options. Favorite apps are the steamed shumai (though the accompanying sauce is overwhelmingly garlic, so I opt for plain soy sauce), gyoza and shrimp tempura. My own favorite rolls are the super duper, sweet potato (HUGE portion of sweet potato), avocado cucumber, super California, Iron Man and King Crab. You will ALWAYS get freebies - for us it's usually edamame to start and a large roll with our others. I think considering the portions and free food, the prices are really reasonable too. YamaChen's is always my go-to sushi restaurant when I am craving tasty, fresh sushi. The restaurant is always very clean and the staff is always friendly. I absolutely love that they always accompany your meal with a free appetizer or dessert. I think that's so thoughtful. The food is so delicious. My favorites are the Superman (spicy salmon and avocado) and the Earthquake (spicy salmon, real crab meat, avocado) but there has been not one sushi roll that I did not like. I would recommend YamaChen to anyone I know because it's one of the best sushi restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

Sushi is hit or miss for me, I'm not typically a fan of elaborate rolls with lots of sauces but YamaChen's did an AMAZING job! First, and arguably most importantly, the restaurant is clean, organized and well lit. We were served utensils (napkin, fork, chop sticks) In sealed bags. The menu was concise but with no shortage of options! We got the boat and the two sushi side, they sent complimentary spring rolls (which were delicious). My husband and I came here on New Years Eve for an early dinner at 5:30. I made a reservation but don't think it was necessary. I have been here before but it's been several years and there have been some changes including a piano now in the restaurant. We were waited on by a very nice waitress....I think her name was Isabel. I ordered the roll combo for $19.95 and added a salad. I got the Hawaii roll and a spicy tuna. I couldn't decide and asked for a recommendation. My husband got 3 spicy rolls....salmon, tuna and a california. They brought complimentary edamame to the table which was a nice touch. We ate it all. The presentation of our sushi was awesome!! Plenty of wasabi and even a small amount of seaweed salad. It was delicious and fresh but a box was definitely needed for leftovers. Side note....my salad was okay. It was spring mix with dressing. There was nothing else. I am actually okay with that because I like spring mix but just a heads up if you don't . Every ingredient was crisp, fresh, and flavorful--a simple dish executed exactly as it should be. Next came the oysters: a dozen Rockefeller and a dozen Pacific. The Rockefeller oysters were everything you would expect from this classic preparation--rich, savory, and baked beautifully. The Pacific oysters, however, completely stole the show. Each oyster was topped with a delicious combination of chorizo sausage, pepper jack cheese, and seasonings before being baked to perfection. The burger arrived piping hot, loaded with melted cheese, and accompanied by a generous serving of crispy fries. She jokingly threatened to drink the remaining sauce after finishing the dumplings (she didn't), but she did convince me to dip one of my fries into it. She was absolutely right--it was fantastic. In fact, I now regret turning down the dumpling she generously offered me. Part of the fun of dining here is watching Shuck-Master Slim work. He's not only remarkably skilled but entertaining as well, adding a little personality to an already enjoyable experience. From the fresh seafood to the outstanding value and friendly atmosphere, this was another memorable visit to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. If you haven't been to The Atlantic on Pacific, I highly recommend adding it to your list. You'll be glad you did, and you can rest assured that you're helping support one of our outstanding local restaurants.

Since they were out of the malasadas, I decided to order the banana latte instead. I'd give it about a 7/10. For context, I'm always searching for a great banana latte because I love flavored coffee. One thing that frustrates me is when coffee shops advertise flavors like cookie butter, lemon pound cake, or red velvet, but the drink just ends up tasting like sweet coffee with no real trace of the advertised flavor. I was pleasantly surprised because this latte actually tasted like banana. It wasn't the best banana latte I've ever had that title still belongs to one I had in Las Vegas but it was definitely one of the better ones I've tried. The only reason it wasn't rated higher is because I noticed a sugary base flavor that overpowered the coffee a little for me. I personally prefer flavored lattes where I mainly taste the coffee cut with milk and the featured flavor heavily, not just sweetness. That's purely my preference. The fact that I finished the entire drink says a lot. I've had plenty of flavored coffees that I couldn't even finish because I disliked them so much. This wasn't one of those. I enjoyed it, and I definitely didn't regret ordering it. Now...the real star of the visit was the lumpia. It was AMAZING. Crispy, flavorful, and easily some of the best lumpia I've had. I actually tried another lumpia spot recently, and while it was decent, Ohana & Co.'s lumpia completely won me over. It's honestly the reason I'll be back. I have an eye appointment in the area next week, and I'm already planning another stop. I'll definitely be ordering the lumpia again, and this time I'm hoping they have the banana malasadas because that's what I originally came for. I also want to try one of their platters. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend giving Ohana & Co. a try. The customer service was wonderful, the café was clean, the banana latte was one of the better ones I've had, and the lumpia alone is worth the drive.

In my opinion Yama Sushi Bar is the best sushi in Hampton Roads. I was part of the large group Mary Ann R wrote about in her negative comment. It's only fitting to give a review for the remaining 10 people that was at my daughters birthday dinner. The review is 5 stars from all and a few of them noticed that one of the three entrees Mary Ann R mentions was almost finished. One "Maraschino" cherry, pineapple, and dill are added to each plate as decoration. If you have an issue with your meal at a restaurant. Why wait to express your opinion when it's time to pay. Say something when your entree comes out and give the restaurant a chance to make it right. I'm adding pictures of the Sushi Boat from that very day and see how great it looks. Really clean restaurant and very tasty sushi. The staff is super accomodating and our rolls were fantastic. Love it!

Still don't give single people a free roll NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU SPEND! Go with other people for a free roll.

The restaurant itself is fairly small, it only had about 5 tables and a bar area, but you can tell it's a local's favorite and now it's officially one of my favorites as well lol.
