We just moved here from NY and found this place. Food was amazing, great service, it's a small place but seemed organized and clean. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the woman in charge (not sure if she was the owner/manager) but she literally yelled at our waitress right over the top of my head, apparently for simply taking our order (I guess she wasn't supposed to be taking orders) this was not a good look for new patrons coming into your restaurant. That waitress was gracious and kind, and didn't miss a beat even after getting publicly reprimanded and if anything that girl deserves a raise. No one deserves to be talked to like that in public or privately for that matter. But other than that, highly recommend for the food. read more

We ordered: Sho Chiku Bai Nigori saki (375 oz) Aged tofu (lightly fried) Gyoza (pan fried shrimp dumpling) Spicy scallop roll Tuna avocado roll Manhattan roll We started off with appetizers. Never have I been to a Japanese restaurant where they serve shrimp gyoza. Most places only serve chicken or pork. I had to take advantage of this. The aged tofu was amazing! The sauce helped but was good alone. The sushi's was top notch. Fresh rice and all complimented well together. The spicy scallops did not have a kick but after adding wasabi, it gave it some flavor. Another great find in Virginia Beach! An unassuming location at a shopping center. Once you step inside, you're greeted with an immaculately clean and comfortable restaurant. Our first trip here a month ago. We drove 40 minutes from Norfolk just to try this place. Arrived just before 4 for a very late lunch. The place is impeccably clean, the lighting is nice, soothing music and only one other table. He got the steamed shumai and the Sorpporo East roll and hot sake. I got a Carnation roll and Firecracker roll and Sho Chiku Bai Ginjo Cold sake. Expansive menu. Everything was just so good. It was hard to decide what we liked the most. Great service from Jenny too. The place itself is a bit on the small side but has plenty of seating in booths and in front of the sushi bar. The menu is loaded with lots of sushi options but also other features if you're not quite into sushi. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. My lady and I started out with some shrimp gyoza, fried aged tofu, and a bottle of Sho Chiku Bai Nigori sake (served chilled). Both the gyoza and tofu were delicious and went well with the sake. After those, we ordered some sushi rolls; one spicy tuna roll, one scallop roll, and one Manhattan roll (smoked salmon and cream cheese tempura fried). All of them were fantastic! So much so that decided a favorite was VERY tough. After we were done, we felt just full enough, not too little and not too much. With so many food options on General Booth Blvd, sometimes picking one out is a challenge, but Sapporo East is definitely worth a stop for good, fresh sushi. This place didn't have as many rolls as some places I've been to but we choose the following: Las Vegas roll, Chesapeake roll, manhattan roll, volcano roll, rainbow roll, and California roll. Everything was fresh and prepared wonderfully. We also had the side salads which I enjoyed because they include spinach with the iceberg lettuce. The miso soup was flavorful, too! Glad I found Sapporo East and Chef Finn that not only makes great nigiri but also has a seasonal selection of high end fish. Recently Chef Finn has had uni, sweet shrimp, madai(one of my favorite white fish), chutoro (medium fatty tuna) , and toro (tuna belly). The belly of any fish is more expensive bc there's limited amount and it's melts in your mouth. Their salmon belly is wonderful too. If you like flounder then you'll love madai (Japanese red snapper). And while the rice isn't something most people notice, theirs is exceptional. I was craving tempura so we decided to come here for dinner last night. They were crazy busy. The busiest we've ever seen them. We got hot sake, gyoza, a miso soup, the lobster roll, tnt roll, summer roll, and then I got the shrimp and veggie tempura dinner which came with another miso soup, salad and rice. Everything was amazing. In my tempura, I got four pieces of shrimp, four sweet potatoes, one squash and one broccoli. The broccoli is my fav so I think next time I'll see if I can get all broccoli with some shrimp. The gyoza was nicely cooked. It was pan fried on one side and the rest was steamed. It was shrimp gyoza and was so yummy. The service was excellent. We had a waitress, but each one helped out all the tables. They kept the hot sake flowing. We were there for probably an hour and a half. They were packed and constantly taking to go orders too. The sushi was yummy too. We ate everything, except the rice. There was just no more room in my belly for that. We will definitely be back! read more

I have been eating here for years! My wife and I, who was my girlfriend at the time, first visited back in 2004, prior to the renovation. The food was just as good now, if not better, than it was back then. The deals and variety of specials they have is excellent, whether it be a bento box or sushi roll combo, they've always got some sort of deal or special. It is neat to see this small mom-n-pop sushi spot run by the husband and wife, her having a kid and seeing him in the restaurant as a small toddler, and now he's old enough to be helping out, bussing tables, refilling drinks, and getting the checks for guests The rolls are awesome, I always get rolls with raw fish such as the Peanut roll or the smile roll, always so delicious, and the tuna "salad" is slightly spicy and delicious. My wife tends to get cooked rolls like the shrimp tempura or volcano, and likes to sub out the white rice for fried rice in the bento box, and my kids love the cucumber avocado roll and edamame. We've never been and have ordered something that we didn't. Even now as we live in Florida and are moving to California, whenever we come back into town, we always make it a point to stop by, grab some food, and say hello to the owners of this local spot. read more

Sushi for lunch today and while they have a few standard lunch specials, it was interesting to see chirashi there. Rather than rice balls topped with fish, chirashi is a separate seasoned rice with a selection of sashimi slices. The gal who took my order warned me that it would take a while. I could see that there were several other tables still waiting on their orders, so I appreciated the heads up. It didn't really take all that long and since I was sitting at the sushi bar, the chef handed me my plate only a few minutes later. A nice big serving of white rice topped with some sort of crunchies on top. Very tasty and because it was proper sticky sushi rice, it was really easy to eat with chopsticks. Neatly stacked on the plate were a handful of different sashimis including the usual salmon, tuna, crab stick and a shrimp. Artfully presented, as sushi usually is. And very tasty. Not terrific, but A-OK. A very nice portion for under $10 and I left with the feeling that I'd made a healthy choice for lunch! read more

My go to sushi place in the area! I've had food delivered and I've picked up food from there before. Always fresh sushi, perfectly cooked rice, and the rice to sushi ratio on the rolls is on point! Some places drown their fish in rice. All you see and taste is the rice. Makes you wonder if there's even any sushi in there. But this place does not disappoint (as you can see in the picture)! Second time ordering an still not any better. Only ordered because Volcano was closed. I got the aged tofu which was ok. The tempura sauce was bland which was odd. Also had seaweed salad. My husband got a bento box with shrimp tempura and teriyaki salmon. This is where it goes off the rails. The tempura was only 5 small pieces. Nowhere on the menu does it say it's only 5 pieces. The more expensive rolls are all listed as 3 or 5 pieces. It also has almost all breading and lettuce in it. The teriyaki salmon was basically jerky and he couldn't eat it. The salad that came with it was ridiculous as it was only a pile of iceberg lettuce with maybe 2 shreds of carrots. Lol! Why??
