Both came with cornbread and condiments. Can opt for 2 sides at a higher price. Food was served in to-go containers and first impressions weren't so good. The catfish said swai on the menu- upon reading on it, it isn't the same as the American catfish at all, but an inexpensive and lower quality option (why priced high on the menu?). There were 4 thin pieces, lightly breaded, was the most flavorful in our order at least. Newly opened in Chelsea so I had to stop by. I love Amy Ruth in Harlem and they use to have some of the best collard greens I've ever tasted. I haven't been in a few years so I don't know if the quality is still the same. Love their chicken & waffles. I stopped by during Thanksgiving weekend so the restaurant was completely empty. I love the ambiance and wall art. Representation matters and it screams black owned as soon as you step in. I love the tables and seating but I don't like the big open spaced kitchen. I feel like there should have been a wall separating the counter space from the kitchen. I was so distracted by it. The price is suitable for the area but it's a little pricey nonetheless. I got the fried catfish dinner with 2 sides which was $26. you have a choice of 1 or 2 sides and it comes with a slice of cornbread. The fried catfish was lightly breaded which I loved but it was just a tad bit too salty for me. The Mac & cheese & sweet potatoes were also yummy but I didn't care too much for the collard greens. They were seasoned nicely but a little too rough & chewy for me. They wrapped up the container in plastic wrap to avoid any spillage and gave me an abundant amount of condiments. Always wanted to check out Amy Ruth's, and no better time than when you are starving! Upon entering the location, loved the atmosphere. The music, art on the wall, the warm friendly, inviting atmosphere, and the service was hands down the best. Sharmaine is wonderful, knows the menu, answered my questions, very friendly service, that makes you feel welcome. This location is more of a take out spot, but there is ample seating. The food is prepared fresh, served hot, with generous portions. The restaurant prices are fair considering the large portion sizes. My food was generous enough for two meals. When I say fresh, I mean freshly cooked. The food is not salty, or overly sweet, perfect balance. Each dish is named after a famous celebrity entertainer. The honey friend chicken brought me back to the good old days of the Shark Bar, and my Grandmother's kitchen! Have not seen Kool Aid on a menu in ages, definitely a Southern thing, because my Grandmother's both were from the South and Kool Aid was a staple whenever we went to visit. The baked mac & cheese definitely takes you back in time, it was delicious, absolutely perfect! They did not miss a beat with the taste, everything was perfect. Well now yes I am so thankful Ms Ruth came to my parts of Manhattan. The staff are kind and helpful and I love the decor inside just giving you power and strength I love the significance in the menu names because I just love greatness in African American culture. The flavors in the Obama meal I had made me have to sit down and properly put my paper napkin on my lap and eat the food slow to enjoy every bite. One of my favorite restaurants! They have opened up a small location in Manhattan. The menu isn't as large as the Harlem, they don't have alcohol, but they still have a great product. I opted for two sides, along with Banana Pudding. My friend had turkey wings and two sides. The service was excellent and the food was great. I will say I did not care for the Banana Pudding tasted different than what I was used to from here but that was okay. They're known for their authentic southern soul food, and every now and then I just desperately need some soul food. This new location offers a streamlined menu featuring their most popular dishes, and is more geared toward takeout or a quick meal. When I was asking the lady at the front what the move was, she was appalled when I told her I'd never had catfish. She said I had to get the fried catfish sandwich, so I got that and the honey-dipped fried chicken plate with 2 sides. To be honest, the catfish just wasn't for me. But I think that's more of me just not liking catfish in general. I couldn't really get outta my head I was eating a catfish. However, this chicken was BANGIN. It had a crispy, crunchy exterior, with tender meat on the inside. The well-seasoned crust was the perfect compliment to the moist chicken. So when I heard that my favorite uptown soul food restaurant ( Sleep in Peace Carl Redding) had finally opened a downtown location, I had to try it out! I went on a Wednesday ight and ordered to go. The staff was super nice and my food was ready within five minutes. I ordered the bbq pork ribs dinner with Mac n cheese and candied yams. As soon as I smelled the bbq sauce my mouth was already watering. And the food did not disappoint! Now if you are looking for traditional, overly seasoned and high caloric food to make your arteries cringe, THIS AINT IT! The yams were very light and naturally sweet. And the brick sized portion of Mac n cheese was delightful filling and tasty. The ribs were a good portion( about 4-5 pieces with a lot of sauce- which is how I like it ) The meal came with a big piece of cornbread that was very fluffy and had enough honey on it that I didn't use any butter. The mac & cheese was decent. Cornbread was phenomenal. No cocktail sauce available for the fried fish (is that just a Southern thing?) The sitting area inside is small, but enough to seat different parties. The air-conditioning is lacking. I never write reviews but this meal was so bad that I feel compelled to save others the trouble: I ordered a chicken thigh and leg to go. By the time I got home (A really short walk) the foil wrap and insulated bag were soaked with oil. The chicken was inedible as it had been fried or refried rendering the meat actually black and stringy. The good... The service. The employees were really sweet and helpful. The place was clean and the artwork was a nice touch. Now the bad... The chicken leg was very salty and over cooked. Only half of it was edible. The other half (thigh meat) was completely dried out. The mac and cheese had a day old look. It was gummy and burnt. The collard greens tasted like it was from a can. You can tell the difference between home made and something that came from a factory. The sweet tea was good, and so was the candied yams. I've had several dinners at the original Amy Ruth's, and it was nothing like this. If you want good southern cooking, head to Amy Ruth's uptown restaurant. Last Thursday, I enjoyed the delicious catfish sandwich. The seasoned batter was delicious and the fish was moist and tender. The fries were crisp and not greasy. Even the bun was great. This Thursday (Thanksgiving 2024), I ordered the honey glazed fried chicken with collard greens. What a hit and a miss, which namesake Reggie Jackson didn't do often. The chicken was tough and stringy. The collards were oddly sweet. The cornbread fell apart when I tried to spread butter on it. I would definitely warn anyone who, like me, enjoys moist tender chicken legs and thighs against ordering this plate named for the legendary MLB National Hall player. Batting .500 is ok for baseball, but not for a restaurant that has a specialized short menu, meaning each dish should score at least an 8 out of 10. I got one 9.5 last week and a 1.0 today. I popped into this place unexpectedly as I was walking by. I didn't even know Amy Ruth had a spot downtown. I literally did a U-turn. My server Taneeshia was friendly from the moment I walked in the door, in a very genuine way. She laughed because she saw the U-turn I made after seeing the sign 'Chicken and Waffles.' She was very helpful with suggestions on the most popular dishes. She checked up on me through out the visit, but not in an over bearing kind of way. I knew I was being well looked after.
