I've ordered from here 3 times now and as a southern gal, it's pretty decent soul food for when I don't feel like cooking myself. The first time I ordered, I got the sampler that included fried shrimp, fried chicken and ribs. I liked the fried chicken the best, but none of the meats blew me away. The mac n cheese was good, as were the greens, but the portion of greens was SO SMALL (pictured). It was in the smallest cup on the tray and they didn't even fill it up. Yams are one of my all time favorite sides, but I did not like theirs at all. They were too firm and also didn't have enough glaze. I also tried the chocolate cake and it was on the dry side. Since the meats didn't wow me, the last 2 times I ordered, I've just gotten the veggie platter. The first time, I tried to get greens, cabbage, and mac n cheese - but the restaurant called saying they were out of greens, so I settled for double cabbage. They kinda skimped on how they filled the largest section of the takeout. You'd think that since they were out of what I actually ordered, they'd have done me a solid and gave me a full portion. But no. During my most recent order, there was a mix-up with Grubhub canceling my order because the driver arrived and apparently thought the store was closed. The restaurant called me asking me if I'd canceled (which I did not) bc they made the food and it was waiting to be picked up. Ultimately, I felt bad about them making the food, so I ordered on Uber eats (even more expensive!) so it didn't have to go to waste. I got greens, cabbage and mac again and it was fine, but the greens were in the largest section of the tray and it was literally half empty (pls look at the photo!!). This time really rubbed me the wrong way They're good when I don't feel like cooking myself, but at nearly for $20 for a veggie platter - the least they can do is fill the tray.

My sisters and I came here on a Friday night. We were late for our reservation at 8:15pm so when we walked in the bartender/server said they were closing in 1 minute 8:30pm. I was shocked a restaurant in Harlem closed so early. He let us sit and order thankfully. The restaurant was small but nice inside. They played such good music. My sisters ordered a rum punch and tequila sunrise. I stuck with a water. We were starving so ordered cornbread immediately. We all got fried chicken. Everything came out fresh and hot. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy. They ran out of rice and peas so I got candied yams which were still good. I enjoyed the Mac & cheese. We didn't have any room for dessert. They are known for their peach cobbler. Next time, I want to try it.

Miss Mamie's brings me back to my time living down South! The food at Miss Mamie's is very good and reasonably priced - the portions are huge and you really can't go wrong with whatever you order. I particularly enjoyed the collared greens and the candied yams - the fried shrimp were also really good and crispy. Perhaps the best part of Miss Mamie's though is the atmosphere. The service is calm and laid back, and everyone is extremely friendly. Our server gave us a bunch of recommendations and Miss Mamie's is clearly a neighborhood place- everyone said hi to each other upon walking in (we were right by the door so we were greeted quite often!) and it was just really pleasant to be here. I've wanted to try this place for years and I can't believe we finally made it here in 2024. We will absolutely be back.

A group of friends and I came here for dinner after an urban hike around Upper Manhattan parks. The space was lovely and prettily decorated with gorgeous, colorful floral arrangements all over, a red piano, framed portraits, cute little lamps, white tables and chairs with pale yellow walls. There was a nice, cozy atmosphere. I decided to order the Sampler, which came with Fried Cat Fish, Ribs, Fried Chicken, along with 3 sides. I went with the Candied Yams, Mac & Cheese, as well as Rice & Peas. I loved that this platter came with a little bit of everything. The Fried Cat Fish was lightly breaded, perfectly crispy, flaky and wonderfully well seasoned. The Ribs were smothered in bold, savory sauce, and delightfully tender. Fried Chicken was oh so crunchy, nicely juicy, and full of great flavor. Candied Yams were soft, in a warm, cinnamony sauce. Mac & Cheese was quite cheesy, creamy, with a tasty crust. Finally, Rice & Peas were pretty good and had just the right consistency. Service was solid. Our waitress was welcoming and everything came out in a timely manner. We all definitely enjoyed our meal here!

Southern Fried Chicken and Ribs Combo with Collard Greens and Macaroni and Cheese

I was craving soul food and was sold on this place as historic contender in the Best Soul Food in NYC category. I arrived for an early dinner with a friend on a Saturday. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and there was only one other group dining at that time with one service member visible. We were automatically brought cold cornbread which I only nibbled on. The Famous Seafood Gumbo was a good appetizer with a moderate of spicy taste; definitely the Shining Star of my dining experience. I opted for the Southern Fried Chicken and Rib Combo which came with two pieces of chicken and two ribs covered in BBQ sauce. The meats were seasoned well but I would have liked more seasoning in the sides of collard greens and Macaroni & Cheese. I would not recommend the Peach Cobbler because the flavor was not there but the Red Velvet was better maybe even really good when served at room temperature and not cold. We came in at the perfect time and was able to enjoy our food without having to constantly hunt down the server. Everyone after us was not so lucky and waited too long for cold food or incorrect orders. The kitchen even struggled to get the orders to the many delivery food drivers. Lack of staffing is an issue that would need to be overcame in order for me to return.

Thank you, Valerie Simpson, and your late husband; Nickolas Ashford, for creating this amazing venue. The guest host for the evening was the incredibly talented Olutayo. Olutayo is joy exemplified. His vocal range, dance moves, entertaining facial expressions...infectious. I fell in love with this man and did not hesitate to tell him so. Beyond his talents was Olu's ability to manage / juggle the night's open-mic entertainers with such grace. From the lyrics of En Vogue and Salt-N-Peppa: "Whatta Man, Whatta Man, What a Mighty Good Man!" All of the entertainers were incredible. What a range of singers, dancers, a poet, a violinist. And the band! The band! The band! Come on!! Outstanding. I was seated next to Darius, one of the several background vocalists that were positioned throughout the lounge. We became fast friends in this space filled with exuberance. Darius was a delight. He was also a big brother to me, making sure no one blocked my view of the performance. Thank you, Darius, that was so kind of you. I had such a wonderful time being in the company of all these amazingly talented people. It was a 6-hour dopamine rush that should not be missed. The dinner that was served was top-notch. I had the Sea Bass. My friend had the Golden Fried Chicken. Both meals were delicious. I had the ginger mocktail with rosemary and blueberries - so yummy I had two. Dessert was key lime pie - suffer we will. Our server; Vickie, was a delight and amazing to observe as she maneuvered around the performers and kept us and everyone around us well served and continually hydrated. Vickie is to be commended for how hard she worked throughout the evening. I made sure our tip reflected our appreciation of her. Put the Sugar Bar on your bucket list when visiting NYC. You'll leave there feeling you have experienced Heaven on Earth.

The day before our dinner, I got an email, text, and telephone call to confirm our reservation. I asked if our seats were assigned to a specific table. I was told the assignments would be available the next morning. We arrived about 45 minutes before our reservation time. We were told that we could NOT go to the bar without paying the $20.00 per person door fee for the show. That night was open mic night. I was so eager to support this business because of its owners. We were also told we could NOT be seated early. We paid the money and waited. The tables in the bar area were reserved. When our reservation time arrived, in lieu of being seated where we could see the show we paid for, we were taken upstairs. I asked where the upstairs stage was located. There was NO stage. Instead, there was a 20 inch television hanging on the adjacent wall. We waited 45 minutes to watch a television upstairs away from the open mic show. I have included a picture from our vantage point. When I asked why we had not been seated in the open seats on the floor with the stage, I was told that some of the performers brought friends and our table was given to those individuals. Our money would not be refunded. I asked repeatedly why we were being moved and the hostess indicated that she did not make any decisions and the seats were going to be given to others. Those folks had not arrived and had not made any reservation. Thus, making a reservation was a waste of time. Then there was the food. I figured no one could mess up hot wings. I was wrong. The lemon pepper wings had no lemon and no pepper. It was just dropped into some butter. I had "buttered" wings. No seasoning except butter. Every member of our group remarked that the food was NOT good. I left 3/4 of the food on the plate. I was SORELY disappointed. Even sports bar have food don't string their customers along, make them wait 45 minutes, and then stash them away in heaven (i.e. upstairs). I could have watched better entertainment on Youtube. I will not be returning and I am telling everyone that I had bragged to about my upcoming birthday outing at the Sugar Bar that they should NEVER visit this place. No one cared that we were utterly disappointed with the trickery regarding the seating.

The space and volume seemed to overwhelm the staff at times. Service was friendly and welcoming but also frazzled and disorganized. We never received our appetizer until we reminded them, and our drinks (sweet tea and lemonade) also had to be requested again after a very long wait. To their credit, they did pack up the crab cake appetizer to go and removed it from the bill, which we appreciated. The fried chicken, mac and cheese, and yams were all served on top of each other. If you dont like for your food to touch, this place will be a nightmare for you. I ordered fried catfish, collard greens and potato salad. The fried catfish was served swimming in collard green juice (there's a picture of it). It was also surprising that you only get one piece of catfish, which felt underwhelming for the price, especially since it was soggy. The potato salad was served in a small separate bowl, which is typical in many Southern restaurants for ALL side dishes. The mac and cheese had good flavor but the cheese wasn't fully melted. The yams were dry and not very sweet despite the menu description. The collard greens were on the sweeter side, which may work for some but wasn't my preference. The potato salad the only thing that was solid. Overall, it felt overpriced for the portion sizes and execution. The bartender seemed very skilled, and the drinks we saw being made looked great, though we didn't order any. After the long wait and missing appetizer, we skipped dessert and went elsewhere. The bathroom also needed attention and was not well maintained AT ALL! Ew The restaurant is very loud which didn't bother me at all but an FYI. It is also handicapped accessible and kid friendly. I really wanted to love the experience, but it fell below expectations in terms of service, cleanliness, and value. I might give them another try but no time soon.

We ordered the Bodega Special, oxtails, Mom Duke's shrimp, the wings, and the collards, and every single dish was a 10 out of 10. No weak links. No "it's fine." Just plate after plate of food that made me want to stand up and applaud. (We're at Lincoln Center, it felt appropriate.) The oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender with a rich, glossy sauce that had layers I'm still thinking about. Mom Duke's shrimp arrived dramatic and beautiful, whole shrimp in a deeply spiced sauce that felt simultaneously fancy and deeply soulful. The collards were unlike any I've had. Complex broth, perfect greens, gorgeous presentation with edible flowers that somehow made the dish feel even more intentional. How is a bowl of collards this exciting?! And then. THE WINGS. I don't throw around "best wings of my life" lightly. I have eaten a LOT of wings. These wings broke my brain. That glaze, that crunch, those dipping sauces. I genuinely don't know what Chef Kwame did to them but it should be illegal. Life changing. I will be back for the wings alone. The room is stunning, the plating is stunning, the whole vibe is fun and lively and cool without trying too hard. This is the best meal I've had in New York in years, and I live here. Book it the second Resy drops the reservations. Do not sleep on it. Do whatever it takes to get a table. You will not regret it.

I didn't even like the cosmic brownie. :(…read more Over and over during my ten-year anniversary dinner at Tatiana, I kept thinking some variation of: "is this it?" This is the best restaurant in the entire city according to the NYT and various knowledgeable food-fluencers? What are they so excited about? I think Tatiana's high-low is great for two groups of people: a snooty Columbus Circle crowd thrilled by the novelty of elevated and safe Real New York Cuisine that makes them look woke; and well-seasoned ordinary New Yorkers who are gratified to see their culture and childhood getting its fancy due. But there are better ways to experience NYC's particular brand of global African diasporic food, and better places to have a fancy dinner. My husband is from Jamaica, where complaining about a restaurant's rendition of any Caribbean dish is something approaching a national sport. But I think he nailed Tatiana's problem when he tried the goat curry patties, hesitated for a moment, then said, "it's like ... they want to elevate this, but they haven't taken time to get the basics of a patty right yet." I'm a vegetarian who doesn't know Jamaican cuisine, but I had the same reaction to the scallion pancake: this isn't a good scallion pancake. Where's the crisp? Where's the sesame oil? Why is it so thick? You gotta nail that before you start innovating. A lot of Tatiana is fine but ordinary: a bright piri piri salad with lots of avocado, a spicy margarita that tasted like a watermelon jolly rancher, cornbread with some kind of eggy butter, okra sliced lengthwise and fried within an inch of its life, a brownie and ice cream masquerading as bodega snacks, a loud soundtrack that overpowers conversation, and decor that could have been a fancy hotel lobby in Cincinnati. I don't think I was missing anything in the long months of no reservations, and I won't be back. I get all the winks and nods to the experience of Chef Kwame's upbringing in NYC: a world of takeout Chinese food, Jamaican patty shops, egusi, bodega chopped cheeses and Hostess donettes. But I'd submit that those ordinary originals are perfect, and I found these elevated reinterpretations paradoxically ordinary. You want to experience real New York, even though you never had a student MetroCard? It's out there. Go forth!
