On what should've been a glorious day--ordained by the Dog Almighty Himself, or possibly the spiritual equivalent of a hot UCLA sorority girl--we gathered to honor Shane's 38th birthday. A milestone. A monument. A celebration of a man whose legend looms over Austin like a slightly tipsy bat. Nate Gardog & Co bravely ordered what was advertised as an Oreo cake meant to serve 4-5 humans. What arrived, however, was not a cake. It was not even a mini-cake. It was... a cupcake wearing platform shoes. A baked good masquerading as something it clearly was not. The bag was on us, literally and spiritually. Shane--who, need I remind you, is an Austin icon, a man whose culinary preferences are practically carved into the walls of Barton Springs--was forced to confront this fraudulent pastry. And let me tell you: no man deserves this. Not at 38. Not ever. If the staff at Amy's were the true clairvoyants we believed them to be, they would have inherently known Shane's one, true, universal flavor: Funfetti. Classic. Chaotic. Confetti for the soul. Yet here we stood. Funfetti-less. Candle-less. Hope-less. As the final insult, there were no candles. Not even a sad, melted tea light from the back. Nothing to blow out except disappointment. Pretty good, place was out of many flavors and bananas by the time I was there. It was late but still, such a bummer. Flavors were good and service was pretty quick. After walking around a bit, we stopped by Amy's for some ice cream. My mom wasn't in the mood but I got some. I tried a sample of the Cinnamon ice cream and the Rainbow Kitchen Surprise (marshmallow flavored ice cream with crushed biscoff cookies and red velvet cake chunks). Loved both but I ended up with the Rainbow Kitchen Surprise since it was a special flavor. The cake was so good, especially the chunks that had a little frosting on it. I asked for some of the pecan praline sauce on top which was soooo good and went well with the ice cream. They even offer jars of their sauces for purchase. It's a walk up location but we found a bench right up front. Service was very good and I definitely want to stop by there again. read more

Okay call me an ice cream snob, but I was not impressed by Amy's. Granted, I did get a blood orange sorbet, but the ice cream flavors available did not appeal to me. I also thought the ice cream was too sweet and milky-tasting. Even with a line, there's not much of a wait. I also thought it was tacky that they toss the ice cream in the air for a show lol. I'm not much a fan of distraction to compensate for the actual ice cream quality. read more

Ordered: Tiny Sugar Cone with Oreo & Golden Crunch (~$6) Aya's take: We were walking along Congress Avenue on this gorgeous, hot day and decided to stop by Amy's for a little sweet treat. I got the Tiny Sugar Cone which was just the right dessert portion for me and it was great that I got to choose 2 flavors, Oreo and Golden Crunch. Oreo is made with Mexican vanilla and the Golden Crunch is cold press vanilla, Biscoff, and Butterfinger. Both were super smooth, creamy, rich, and actually complemented the flavor profiles of one another. I wish they had some seating or shaded area to enjoy our ice cream since it started melting almost instantly. Great spot and nice staff! read more

I got the small scoop which can be divided into 2 flavors. They were both disappointing. The honey grapefruit sorbet was a little better in that it wasn't overly sweet but there was no tart and icy but it's a sorbet. The Mexican Vanilla was really bad - the texture was such that it felt like there was a lot of xanthan gum. It was more gummy than anything but still had icy pockets too. Stumbled across Amy's while walking on Congress Ave. The line was long and they have dairy free options so I was excited to try. We didn't have to wait too long as they have a good flow. Order at one window and pickup around the corner. I went with vegan Mexican vanilla since Mexican vanilla, Mexican hot chocolate, etc. seems to be popular in ATX. I enjoyed my ice cream, although it was hard not to compare to the popular chain across the street :) and the staff was very friendly. As an ice cream lover, I had to try Amy's while in Austin! The chain's signature flavor is Mexican Vanilla, which I ordered in a Tiny-sized cup with strawberries on top. The ice cream was delicious and very smooth! I would probably try a bolder flavor next time, because the Mexican Vanilla isn't anything to write home about. While walking around Austin, came by Amy's Ice Cream and had heard it was a place to try if you're in the mood for a cold fix. And when is ice cream ever a bad idea outside of those who are lactose intolerant? So we decided to grab a cup Before coming, I had read that their Mexican Vanilla was the flavor to try, and that is exactly what I did. So my question was, what makes it a Mexican Vanilla? Well, when you put it in your mouth, you definitely notice it isn't like any other vanilla you've had, but it is also somewhat familiar in a "have we met before?" kind of way. It's almost like a vanilla bean with a Madagascar vanilla mixed together, but also with a hint of something else. It is familiar yet unique and I was into it. Love Amy's I like this location because they do this little like movie quotes you could get something free if you get it right. But also, they do a great birthday reward where you can get a free ice cream. They have great flavors. Wish they would bring back the big red flavor, and marshmallow flavor permanently. I really wanted to love Amy's, but unfortunately, it was very mediocre for me. This is my second time trying Amy's, and it was a disappointing experience again. Despite the ice cream being mediocre, the service was great! The cashier was very quick, kind, and had the kind of hospitality that stood out to me. Dark Chocolate Ice Cream with Strawberries - I think that the ice cream was just too fatty and rich for me. I like lighter ice creams, and this had the consistency and richness of frozen custard to me. The strawberries were essential for me in this otherwise I think I would've disliked this experience even more without something fresh to balance out the richness. The dark chocolate ice cream was also much sweeter than I thought it would have been. I was expecting something more bitter. Overall, Amy's is definitely the perfect ice cream for somebody, but that somebody is not me. read more

I never thought I'd describe an ice cream as refreshing in the way a sorbet is, but somehow this pulled it off while staying rich and creamy. Delicious, subtly minty, unbelievably smooth, and surprisingly refreshing. The beet flavor was mild enough that it didn't taste earthy or overpowering--just mellow and creamy, while the mint made all the difference in brightening everything up. I genuinely never had such a refreshing ice cream that wasn't sorbet. Such a unique flavor that somehow works perfectly, and absolutely something I'd get again. GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey (E, D) - my #2 and a complete 100% hit. Tangy, creamy, slightly savory, sweet, and incredibly unique while still tasting approachable. It somehow tastes exactly like the name promises without feeling too "out there." If you're nervous about goat cheese, trust me and try it. Easily an instant reorder. Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt (E, D) - rounding out my top three. Such a good balance against the sweetness of the rest of the ice cream options. Rich, deep chocolate flavor without becoming overwhelming, while the olive oil and sea salt round everything out and keep it from tasting too sugary.
