The hubs adores Amy's, specifically Mexican Vanilla, but at long last I had to say those four little words he hoped to never hear: "I'm tired of Amy's." He's a good sport. A friend had recommended Jeni's, and I'm so glad. We popped in here on a Friday night after restaurant-hopping, pretty full already, and the friendly and helpful scoopers behind the counter encouraged us to sample as many flavors as we wanted. What were there, eighteen to try?! I thought it was neat that the sample spoons were tiny real spoons. That's so on-brand for Austin. Anyway, I tried the House Coffee and Ooey Gooey Cake but ended up with Darkest Chocolate and Strawberry Pretzel something. They were so good! Don't expect to dine in here, as the only seating is windowsills, but definitely drop in for a couple of scoops when you can. We parked in paid parking on a side street and it only cost $1.50 for half an hour. I don't recommend this area after dark. read more

I do miss some of the more adventurous flavors that seemed made specifically for me, like the spicy Queen City Cayenne or the equally bold Bangkok Peanut, but Jeni's still manages to surprise and delight. I like this place. They have great ice cream. But it's disappointing to see they have 3 people working at 10:30pm and yet only one person is servicing people even though there are 7 people in line. The other two ladies were either stocking ice cream cones or making cones. I'm sorry but one of them could have stopped doing what they were doing to help their co worker service the line. I'm most definitely going to leave a review on google too because in my opinion customer should come first. The strawberry pretzel salad ice cream speaks to me as a Pittsburgher, and I loved it! I believe the other flavor I went with was a vegan lemon one. We tasted a few and made our decisions. I don't think I'm the target audience for this style of store. I get it, it's gourmet ice cream, and you're in the domain. But $7 for two HALF scoops, which if you know your fractions means that's ONE scoop of ice cream, is ludicrous. Nonetheless, we got some because I didn't look at the prices ahead of time. I got a half scoop of the bramble crisp and a half scoop of their double dough. I don't get it- the berry was lacking that tart acidity, I only tasted graham cracker, and the double dough didn't actually have any pieces of cookie dough and tasted overwhelmingly of caramel. I tasted two other flavors- the coffe with cream and sugar and the lavender. The coffee wasn't bad- tasted like coffee, and I didn't get a lavender taste. I get it, it's made from scratch and the owner is a James Beard winner but I cannot justify ice cream at 7.25 per scoop before tax especially when it doesn't completely change my life. read more
