Go here! Go for drinks and great great bar food! I love me a buttery grilled cheese sandwich and this just happens to be the home of one of my favs. Get the Leo D.(grilled cheese with a tomato and onion slice) with fries! YUMMY IN THE TUMMY!!! Always something going on here. The patrons are great and it's easy to get to and no crazy parking fees or valet. Shoot some pool eat some food have some cocktails and fun will just happen!! Nothing bad to say about this place. The staff is great, food is nice bar food, it's plenty of seats, depending on the event. If it's a red wings game, man the joint gets packed. They have pool tables, a jukebox, keno, I love this place. Depending on the day you can have the whole joint damn near to yourself, which is a good thing. read more

The NEW renovated Anchor Bar has upped its game. The staff is great and very fun to interact with. The board games, big Jenga, and prize wheel make the visit that much more fun. We were staying at the Crowne Plaza after a show at the FOX and wanted to catch a night cap, but their concierge assured us that nothing was open nearby. Leave it to Yelp to save the day. "Anchor bar is open", I assured him. "They close at 1230" he remarked. What bar closes at 12:30 on a Saturday besides the State Bar?! Anyway, After calling we walked over and landed at the Anchor, and had a great time. It was fairly empty except for two regulars and a few Ohio natives that were a lot of fun to hang out with. Celeste was our bartender. She was friendly and fantastic! I recall a couple pool tables, a juke box, and Golden Tee in the corner, if memory serves me. We closed the place down but ordered food to take back to our room first. The Totchoes were the cornerstone of our hotel bed picnic. The chicken strips were pretty standard. Their fried wings though...were awesome. Meaty, naked and crispy with sauces on the side. I would definitely recommend them. I also had the Bobby sandwich that I fridged overnight and took home to reheat. Think patty melt with sliced beef rather than ground...with grilled onions and melty white cheese (Swiss, Provolone, not sure?). It was amazing, with the side of A1 they box it up with. I was a big fan of this place. It actually makes me want to stay at the Crowne again, just so we can be in walking distance to the Anchor again! read more

The Anchor Bar is an institution in downtown Detroit. Working on, I believe, it's third location, the newspaper folks in Detroit always seem to be able to find it when it's moved. You can find newspaper workers and TV media workers bellying up to the bar after work, during work, after union meetings and before and after sporting events. They have a great menu even though this looks like a neighborhood dive bar in the middle of downtown. Go and check out all the photographs above the bar of notable patrons from the past. Don't be in a rush to get your picture up there, one of the prerequisites is death. Come on in, grab a stool and have an Avah burger and a beer. read more

I usually look for the local bars when I'm in town for the night. I walked into Anchor Bar at 11pm and was greeted by the poorly lit and depressing atmosphere of the place. One of the keg coolers was broken so four of their draft beers were unavailable. The bathroom was filthy. The bartender was somewhat attentive but impersonal toward me. All this would have been OK but I felt like the outsider in the local bar. Across the street at Tommy's, I was treated like family. read more

I was in Detroit with friends back in 2013 for Metallica's Orionfest. I remember we passed by this place a few times and were reluctant to go, because we weren't sure of this area in Detroit at night and it seemed far from where we were coming from or staying. Thankfully, we not only made one trip but two trips to the Anchor Bar. What surprised me the most about this place, was the fact that it was a hockey bar. I wasn't expecting this, even if it was a few blocks away from the arena. This made me feel right at home. The service was excellent here and they even called us a cab late at night to get us back to our hotel. The cab ride was a whole different story in itself. The only reason why the Anchor Bar gets 1 less star from me is because they ran out of the best thing on the menu... their tater tots!!! read more

Tried the west village burger and substituted the chips w truffle fries. Very tasty- burger was good, truffle fries were not what I originally expected. They were more like steak fries- but still good! Jewel was really sweet, service was excellent and this was my first time, will likely keep going back to try new things on the menu. read more

Had the best experience at Anchor Bar tonight. The service was excellent, the food is outstanding. You must try the Boom Bang Shrimp! The staff was so friendly and made you feel welcome. Stopped by Anchor Bar for a quick bite to eat and a beer before a Red Wings game. Anchor Bar has the basic bar food. I got a Grilled Cheese with Bacon and fries. Also, my group split a few pitchers of Labatt's before the game. The food is just enough to fill you up and give yourself a base before consumption of mass quantities of beer. Purpose served. The main draw for us to Anchor Bar was the free shuttle to the Red Wings game. (You can take your beer on the bus too!) Shuttle runs every 15-30 minutes depending on game-day traffic. read more

Was excited to see the renovations and try the new menu. I left feeling disappointed. The space is brighter and looks very clean but the brand new table we were at was very wobbly. It took 25 minutes for our burgers to come out and then one person in our group didn't get their food for another 5 minutes. None of the burgers had any sauce on them as described in the menu so we had to ask for sides. Don't even bother with the cauliflower - it was in no way roasted and was just steamed with sweet and sour sauce on top. Never got our drinks refilled and got some weird responses when asking about menu items. We were one of 3 tables in at lunch time and from start to finish took over and hour. We showed up just to have some wings, to find out they were completely out of wings. No boneless or bone in. How can you possibly completely run out. Then I decided to order a veggie byob (build your own burger) and were out of avocado. So at that point we just ordered whatever they had to have food and the chicken fry things were gross! And on top of that there was no music playing but you could pay for it if you wanted to listen to music. We probably won't be back to even waste our time! read more

Classic dive bar, which is cool. Friendly crowd. But trying to get a drink was frustrating for me and everyone around me. The amount of money not made from people in the bar is tragic. First Tim in Detroit, we stayed near by the anchor bar, was gonna just stop in for a beer but ended up staying all night and having my friends come join me! The staff is amazing as well as the management, Al was the start to the experience with being very Knowledgeable about the downtown area and was very helpful, the service was excellent and the food was great, this is one hidden GEM of Detroit, anytime you guys come in be sure to yelp about it so people can know a little bit about this place Does not pop up!!! I heard great things about this establishment, especially the food. My first visit here 4/19/17 was terrible. I asked the server I had a Groupon. She had the most nasty attitude just because I was trying to use it on my purchase. Little did I know it was valid for dine-in only. That's fine. I ended up telling her I'll pay the regular price. She proceeded to walk away and say "I'm not dealing with this again" whatever that's supposed to mean. I then had another server cash me out. You do not treat your customers like that, Ellen. This was my first and last visit. Until that server gets trained in customer service, I'll probably think about coming here. Went here before a concert at Joe Louis Arena (which brought in a large swell of folks like myself who looked up the closest bar to the show). I understand that these newbies can be annoying for the bartenders, but the dude was a total d!ck for no explicable reason.
