I placed an order for pick up through grub hub. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was told they were unable to fulfill my order for a reuben sandwich because they had run out of corned beef, no big deal. I was told by the employee to contact grubhub for my refund as they could not do anything on their end since I already paid for the order. I speak with grubhub a few days after the fact, and I am told the restaurant is denying that my order was not fulfilled and that they will not refund anything. I will definitely never purchase from them again, and if you happen to place an order via grubhub, make certain you receive all your food and do not trust them when they say they can't refund your money. read more

I accidentally wandered in to the Greektown sports bar district at some point, and decided to hurry back for my third or fourth visit to the aptly titled Anchor Bar. As far as downtown hangout spots go, this is one of those where I sail out from and where I return to. More often than not because some crew casts a wide net and hauls me in. On a long hot day working an urban farm, walking to bypass the high cost/low value transit system, or kicking a ball around, I had to take a dive for one of my watery domestic favorites. A $3 rolling rock. There were bars down the street that had me during their before-7 Happy Hours, with $2 domestics or well drinks, but outside of that slot, the Anchor is the mainstay. The staff are mostly really sweet, and though they could probably use more help to speed things up, they are a big part of what makes you dock at the Anchor Bar. read more

Never, ever, going back again. We went here because I had a Groupon, which I bought because if the reviews. First, they have free parking if you go at the right time, which we appreciated. We walked in and it was a grungy, dive bar, with pool tables and a narrow seating area withi booths. On the table was a covered container with pickles and hot peppers, and tongs on top that had been handled by who knows how many people. Our waitress was attentive and got us drinks immediately. They were served in plastic cups. Our silverware was also plastic. We ordered from the simple menu of burgers, sandwiches, and other bar food. I got the Scooby-Doo burger with coke slaw and my guest got the bacon cheese burger with fries. The bacon cheese burger had very crisp bacon and American cheese, and the fries were thick and crispy. My burger had grilled onions, and the bacon was so crispy as to be charred, and there wasn't much of it. The patties were very thin and crispy. If your only food is burgers, they should be exceptional. These were not. The Cole slaw tasted like old socks. I am sick as a dog today because I ate it. It was probably close to being spoiled, which is why I'm sick. So in short, If you're looking for a place to go before the game, keep looking. Detroit has many great bats with some awesome food. Simple dirty bar. The burgers are cheap and taste like it however it is exactly what you expect from a dive bar. I have been to better dive bars with better food however it was decent. The juke box has some good tunes to choose from. The liquor selection is pretty good they have 2 james which is a favorite of mine. The beer selection is pretty average your basic trash can beer. Would be fun if I was a bit more intoxicated. read more

Classic bar on the west side of downtown. Great history as a hangout of reporters, union leaders, politicians, etc. Less reporters these days, but still cheap drinks and decent food. Generally friendly, with the game always on TV. read more

Perfect bar to hang out at before the Red Wings game. They have a small, simple menu, but the food is always great. Can't go wrong with a burger and totchos. The staff is awesome, and it's a fun atmosphere. One of the major selling points is that they provide a free shuttle to the Joe. read more

We always end up in the back, back room before a game at JLA. The room itself is fine but jeez it gets claustrophobic back there! The food is decent, and the plastic cups are probably used to cut down on head injuries from drunken patrons. We've discovered some other options in the area and probably won't be back before a Wings game. I'd go back when it would be less crowded. read more

FYI, this bar has absolutely nothing to do with the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY where the classic "chicken wings" originated!! I thought it might have been the same bar but different location, so I came here with great anticipation and was horrified by what was served. I went to college in Buffalo where chicken wings are a staple--light, crispy, spicy, and piping hot. There are many versions of chicken wings throughout the country, but for the real-deal, Buffalo's Anchor Bar is where it all started! This Detroit establishment ain't it. The food here is bad, bad, bad. Slightly warmed soggy breaded chicken wings, with soggy cottage fries and pre-made coleslaw. It has to be one of the worse meals I've ever had. I bit of a dump located in downtown Detroit. I should have called ahead to ask if this Anchor Bar was related to the one in Buffalo. My mistake! Friendly service, but a great disappointment. I went there for the first time last night with my cousin for Paint Nite, which is held in the backroom. We decided to go early to grab a bite to eat. I ordered the Anchor Burger and let me tell you, it was amazing! I hate when burgers have huge buns to where I can't even take a bite, but this burger was perfect. So I come here quite often and never had any issue. I usually get served by a Breana. However maybe Breana doesn't work there anymore because I had the rudest server. She has bleach blonde wavy hair and she never acknowledges you. I brought in lunch from another restaurant because I was on the go. I understand not wanting me to eat food there from somewhere else it she told me to get out and turned her back on me. Then went to tell a co worker of hers where they both then stared at me. Then when I called to tell a manager. The manager blew it off, and didn't even care how disrespectful she was. This sucks that people have to deal with shift behavior. This is the place to go before a Wings game. Not to be confused with Cheli's or Hockeytown Cafe, you'll know you've walked into a bar that's been in Detroit for more than 10 years. If you love the Red Wings and hate the Avalanche (even though they're completely irrelevant now), this is your place. Photos of bloodied up opponents through the years adorn the walls. A MUST is to take the 3 minute shuttle bus drive from the bar to the Joe. Not sure if it's the owner that drives you there, but it's an experience. read more
