Oh gosh. This was a different experience and really kind of heart breaking. The mall is run down, store options are minimal and it feels dead. Unfortunately malls are dying out and mall operators don't seem focused on pivoting to keep these public spaces open and going. Retailers need to start thinking outside the box and keep energy in these spaces or we will loose in person shopping and that would be such a shame. We did get a few things and shop around but we really expected more for a downtown mall. This needs once over by the developer and the City should be more concerned with its success. read more

I like to come downtown to the mall depending on which stores I'm hoping to go to. Parking is $2 an hour if you park on the side near Sullivan's which isn't free but is awesome if you compare it to paid parking in the lower 48. Mall security is amped up. I saw a security guard doing a power walk towards a maybe homeless person inside. There's tons of stores inside and a nice variety. It's not the same as down south but still good with many quality places to shop from. The bathrooms definitely need more attention though. If you can avoid them, avoid them. read more

This place isn't the bustling place it used to be when I was a kid or even just, young(er). It almost seems there are more vacancies than occupancies as far as merchants are concerned. Despite this, there are still gems like Eddie B. and Vans, among others. I recently visited the food court after year(s). Hard to see, considering how busy it used to be in my youth, but its nice to see they have family/nursing restrooms up there etc. read more

By far the nastiest Shopping mall I've ever visited in my 44 years. I've lived all over the United States and traveled the world, like 40 countries and this place takes the cake. The restrooms are littered with piss, shit, and blood. It's a biohazard to even enter the restrooms, much less have to use the toilet. The toilets don't get cleaned, the floors are gross and sticky, walls with piss, shit, and blood on them, and that's just what you can see, imagine what's not seen. How is this place still open? How has corporate allowed this to continue for so long? Ive lived here for over three years and it's only gotten worse. read more

This is actually a smaller mall compared to some that I've been to. It is located in Downtown. There are many floors with all kinds of stores. Lots of souvenir shops too. And at the very top floor is where the " food court " will be. There are not many options up there. But I believe on the 3rd floor they have a steakhouse. I like this mall and I would recommend all who visit Anchorage to go here at least once. There is a parking garage or street side parking. Not sure if the garage charges you to park your car. But I do know street side parking cost money. Wear your comfortable shoes and hit them up! read more

Escalators were closed for maintenance when we visited. We went upstairs to the food court, and when leaving we had to wait 10 minutes for the elevator. I can't imagine what would have happened if there was an emergency and people had to evacuate. One thing that caught my attention was how each store had such wide walkways. Like Alaska has so much space let's make everything bigger than it needs to be. I liked that part of it. Food court options were not great. Subway was the only decent pick. read more

Sorry, an update. Who designed this mall? It's in the heart of downtown (surrounded by COFFEE SHOPS. Why does this matter? Keep paying attention) and it has 5 stories of carrying capacity (if you count the "garden level"). The bathrooms? Have two stalls. TWO. How is this even legal? Isn't there some formula like: (average capacity)*(probability of the average American having bowel rumbles requiring immediate attention) = minimum # of stalls required? How can the answer to this be: "2". HOW? There is always a massive, awkward line for the stalls. I've never used them here. So I wander around downtown like a homeless person asking people if I can use theirs. read more

When I walked in on a rainy Saturday morning it was very very quiet. It only got a bit more lively after lunch time. There is a good selection of shops, two department stores (JC Penny and Nordstrom), and a good selection of shops similar to those you can find in the lower 48. The restrooms are spacious and clean, on the third floor, but can be tricky to find (sign is not that noticeable). Only thing lacking for me was a chemist or drugstore. This place doesn't seem that big from the outside. But with so many floors, there is a lot going on. I was super impressed with the selection of stores and the cleanliness the place. You can easily spend an entire day working your way through stores like Eddie Bauer, Nordstrom, American Eagle, JC Penny's, and the Apple Store. Cruise through Lulu Lemon or Banana Republic or Bath and Body Works. I saw absolutely no difference in inventory selection from the lower 48 and was very impressed with store choices. Stop by Starbucks for some espresso or hit up Annie's for a hot pretzel dog. read more

I only entered the mall to get to Penney's, since Penney's front door is not working and one must enter through the mall. It was an in-and-out visit and I did not really pay much attention to any other part of the mall. I do know that it is a popular mall with a lot of high end stores. It is downtown, so keep in mind that you must pay for parking unless it is Sunday or evening. I don't know if one must pay for Saturday parking. read more

I like 5th Avenue Mall. It has everything you want: convenient, inexpensive parking; a good mix of shops; a food court with an eclectic mix of food; and a couple decent department stores as anchors. The one star off is for 1- a lack of adequate and accessible restrooms and 2- for letting Abercrombie pump GALLONS of its air clogging cologne into the air. I have to avoid the one whole end of the mall (all 3 floors) because of the migraine inducing stench It's un-fing believable. I really don't understand why the mall allows it. It literally chokes the air and could cause respiratory issues for asthmatics and folks with allergies. read more

Second largest mall here in town. Used to be sort of the nicer one but Dimond Center has done a lot of remodeling and added more stores. Pluses are clothing selection for all. You have Nordstrom, JCPenney, Motherhood Maternity, American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Hot Topic, Zumies... and so on. Pretty much every style for every person young and old at almost any price point. Tons of shoe store selection too. Makeup, jewelry, gifts, cards... even a post office! Negative is there isn't free parking. Even if you park on the street there's some sort of new rules about moving your car every couple hours or something (don't know exact law, I just pay for parking in the Easy Park garage). Also, the bus station and routes are close so there are a ton of homeless people and the first floor smells like weed. Also if you have a stroller or wheelchair you have to use the elevators a lot. The main one in the middle always smells like body odor and pee so I like to use the Nordstrom elevator or JCPenney (although the button there always shocks me... can't be good). If you have kids, the Nordstrom bathroom (ladies) on the 2nd floor is the best place to change a diaper. Nice cushioned changing area, couches in the lounge area and full length mirror to check for baby food or spit up spills on yourself. They do have a nursing area on the 4th floor in the food court as well as a family restroom. Overall, they have almost any sort of store for any gift you have to buy (and wrap) and decent food selection including two restaurants (Sullivan's and Marketplace Cafe in Nordstrom). read more

As far as shopping malls go, this as good as it gets in Alaska, but it's very underwhelming compared to malls in the lower 48 (and Hawaii for that matter). I usually come here to go to the stores whose only location in Alaska is in this mall (Sephora, Nordstrom, Bath & Body Works). There have been some major chains opening here within the past few years, such as Victoria's Secret and Lush. If you're visiting from out of state, Once in a Blue Moose on the second floor has a lot of cute touristy souvenirs. The main perk of shopping here is the lack of sales tax, although with the current state of the economy who knows how much longer that will last. The food court choices are pretty limited. About half the places serve some kind of Asian fusion cuisine. Which is a shame because the food court is at the top of the mall with very spacious seating. They recently added new tables with charging stations which is convenient. If you want an enjoyable sit-down meal, you're better off walking to one of the many restaurants downtown. Overall a decent shopping place, but nothing you can't find elsewhere, be it in the lower 48 or just outside the mall. read more

While on my vacation here from California, I came to this mall several times and it seemed like an alright mall, not as compared to the diamond mall but decent enough; plenty of stores and a good amount of sales/deals that I found pleasing. One day, and this would be my last day here, I was sitting down at one of Starbucks' provided chairs/tables waiting for my friend to get there so we can walk around the store and find some items to buy when all of a sudden I get surrounded by security and this guy, assuming he is the head of security, demands for me to leave the premises for literally no reason at all but "loitering." I could not believe this happened especially when I was only sitting there for maybe 30 minutes. I retaliated because I am doing no such thing and waiting for a friend but this goes on for quite a while until the head of security threatens to call the police to have me removed and when they arrived, of course the APD does nothing but say that the mall is a "private" place and that I can legally be kicked out for any reason they want. I am now banned from this mall for a complete year. I will absolutely never step foot in this mall as long as I live and may never walk or drive past it because this made me never want to even come back to Alaska for any reason every again. State is in a complete ruin anyways with the meth and spice outbreak, homeless people standing on every street corner, and just weirdos everywhere. No more vacations in this god forsaken piece of land called a state . read more

One of the better places to shop! Enjoyed it! Added stores! Buckle was the main draw for me. The rest of the mall had a good selection of name stores. This small Mall right in the heart of downtown in Anchorage. The mall is one of many places to visit in downtown Anchorage, so plan accordingly. This mall is all enclosed so Alaskans can have some place to go when it is hip deep in snow. It was very neat the way it was laid out. Plus being on multiple floors. This is overall a great place, no sales tax, lots of food choices, and a lot of good deals, some people could spend DAYS in here. The food court is can be scary if you are afraid of heights, so just stay away from the railing. The food here is pretty good, but the employees can be rude depending on where you eat at. I think ZACH'S Ice Cream is the best here, not just because the service is nice, but because the Ice Cream is SO GOOD. There are lots of nice fun stores to shop at, and Eddie Bauers usually have a good sale, one of the people at the store tried to grab my hand, and put lotion on it though, why would I need lotion, I am a man!!! No sales tax is the reason why I am rating this place 4 stars, and the fact that most of the employees are nice, but watch out... because there are some pretty sketchy people that come here though. I think that this is the best mall in Anchorage, and I am coming back, because I didn't have enough time to shop at all the good stores!!! Since I worked on 4th Avenue for 7 years, I practically lived at this mall. If you're planning to do some good shopping, this is the only place to go in Anchorage. They get plenty of big name chains (i.e. Gap, Banana Republic, Bebe, etc.) and the only nice department store in the city (Nordstrom) is one of the flagship corner stores. They have plenty of variety, though this tends to be a bit more upscale than all the other malls in Anchorage. You don't really see unchaperoned kids roaming around the mall and there are only a few of those teen centered stores anyway (i.e. Hot Topic, Claire's, Pacific Sun), so it really isn't the best place to come anything non-preppy. The food court is pretty well stocked, though there are plenty of great restaurants just a few blocks away. The mall is always clean and well lit, plus you never have to fight for parking spots. During the day, expect to see upper middle class housewives and tourists shopping. The evenings tend to be younger shoppers who are just getting off of work. Expect the mall to be really busy in the summers and whenever Nordstrom has a major sale. read more

To start, I am really torn between giving this mall a 3 star review or a 4 star review. However, due to quite a few negatives I'm giving it only 3 stars. While this mall is very clean and very nice, they have too many Alaskan touristy shops as well as too many empty spaces for rent, which makes it seem depressing. In addition to this, this mall doesn't really have very many high end stores for men or women. Yes, it has Banana Republic and Nordstrom's - although Nordstrom's isn't technically a shop in the mall as it has its own two levels - but that's about has high end as it gets. Abercrombie and Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Gap, and Eddie Bauer are all there, but that's about it. There's no Ann Taylor or Cache for women nor is there Brooks Brothers or J. Crew for men. There's just no place to get a great suit or dress outside of Nordstrom's; Nordstrom's carries that mall as far as clothing is concerned. Additionally, there is no movie theatre, which has become commonplace in every mall these days. Also, besides the food court on the top level, there is only one restaurant in the entire mall. The mall is dimly lit, there's no fun music playing, nothing that would inspire someone to continue shopping at the mall. Another store that I would love to see in this mall, and this is just me since I'm a pretty big techie, is a Bose store. I own multiple Bose products and being able to take a product in to a store for help would be great. Anyways, just my two sense but I hope this review helps! read more

Not too shabby. So many floors and a lot of stores. First time here so I didn't know what to expect.

Lets just say that this mall reminds me of an ant farm. People going up, down, side ways, and around. You have to pay for parking which sucks, but understandable since it is down town. The food court isnt anything special- most of the food is nasty, or sugary, and/or overpriced. To get anywhere (if you dont know the mall) it is a maze. You have all of the high end and middle class stores, so if you are looking for something you are bound to find it. That is for sure! read more

I grew up in nowhereville New Jersey and when I moved up here, I didn't expect there to be any sort of mall. But this mall is beautiful, current, and has reasonably priced goods. There is a variety of vendors that I'm not used to, and even a Lush. Where I grew up, those were the things you had to take the trek to big cities like Philly for. From my sheer unadulterated wonder at the quality of the mall in comparison to my east coast experience, I have to give it a good rating. I'll definitely alter it once I have enough time to adjust and evaluate it. read more

This place used to be the spot back in the days, but now homeless people and run away teens are always crowding the mall and make the experience a little less pleasing (i get it we have a homeless problem) but id like to shop in peace without getting asked for a cigarette all the time. I do not smoke. The stores are all mediocre-at-best. Whatever happened to the Disney Store the Hello Kitty store all those cool places now it's just boring businesses that don't attract the younger eye. I like corky things that catch my attention. I found all the treasures I was looking for at this mall! I was scheduled to end my pattern in Anchorage but got extended to head to Sweden & Switzerland. I had to scramble to find warm clothes, boots, etc. I found everything I needed in about 1.5 hrs! Excellent! The boot store on the 1st level was excellent.. great staff and so many choices! This is a deceptive mall. It looks kinda junky on the outside, but it's all nice and pretty on the inside. It's got several floors. It's anchored by a couple of major department stores. There's a mix of standard mall stores (i.e. Banana Republic) and cute, independent stores. And it's the only place around to find a Sephora. So big props for that. All in all, it's a mall. A pretty sad mall. In any city in the lower 49 this would be the ghetto mall on the bad part of town. The 1982 décor, dark lighting, high school stairs in the corners, graffiti and urine smells all create the picture of exactly what you are thinking. This is a standard mall, a tad better than a regional class B mall. Very convenient walkable downtown location, and pluses are the Nordstrom's and tourist/niche stores like Alaska Wild Berry Products and Oil & Vinegar. I got some sale items at the Banana Republic (glad to find one here for quality sweaters) and had a snack at the Zack's Frozen Yogurt in the serviceable food court. read more

Went here today after getting a amazing outfit from my mother in law for Xmas. My husband loved it so much I thought I just might have to get another shirt or two like it. I went in and right away Tana asked me if I needed help finding anything so I described the shirt I got for Christmas and she was able to find the exact same one I got and then I just got 2 more that where the same style and I got some body lotion and perfume on my way out while waiting to check out. When I got home I discovered a 20 % off coupon in my bag. Awesome read more

When this mall was first built, we balked at the exterior "fake" windows, thinking they were pretty darn ugly. What?? But then, I think those of us who agreed with that assessment, can now say we have become accustomed to them. After all, what can you do, right? Having been to some of the best malls in the nation, well- yeah okay, this one falls short. But hey, we are still fortunate to have it here. I enjoy coming here after attending mass at the Cathedral to purchase my essentials at the Nordstrom Clinique counter. One can park on the street for free on the weekends and official holidays, and after 6 p.m. on weekdays. The anniversary sales that Nordstrom offers are worth checking out. Nordstrom also has a very nice cafe and restroom facilities. Another favorite store of mine is JC Penney where they offer great sales also, including the wonderful hair products sold in the salon at tons better prices than Freddy's. I also enjoy the Hallmark store here. Regarding the food court, it is a beautiful area, with the big (real!) windows that offer wonderful light. it's nice to come here in the wintertime. I suppose the food choices could certainly be better, that is, for a person who isn't into fast/junk food. I usually go for the Mexican food, a nice taco salad, and/or frozen yogurt cone, but I haven't been up there for a while, so can't really say for now. I do miss Ben Bridge being here in the mall, as I used to be able to purchase nice jewelry pieces for very reasonable prices. Ben Bridge is now in another location near midtown. I also very much miss how Eddie Bauer USED to be with the classic, good looking, quality apparel. For the most part, I really like the 5th Ave Mall and question those that slam it. Way better than the Dimond Center not just for the amount and quality of the stores but for a much safer shopping experience. There is always security personnel visible at every corner of the mall. There is a great food court on the top floor with the usual high priced mall food. The uniforms the staff have to wear at the hot dog place a worth the trip to the top floor even if you are not hungry. I feel for them!!! I think this is as good as it gets in Alaska for a shopping mall. This mall doesn't have a movie theater and I don't think it needs one since it is located in the heart of downtown.
