My family and I have been vacationing at the Anchorage Inn since I was a child. In fact some of my favorite childhood memories were made at this hotel. Unfortunately, due to the appalling lack of customer service and total disrespect we encountered on our last and final stay we will no longer be loyal guests of the hotel. The most blatant level of disrespect occurred when the general manager Patty attempted to kick my one year old niece out of the pool for the duration of her stay because she lost her wrist band. Then she proceeded to call the police on my obviously upset sister instead of rectifying the situation and showing your paying customers any type of hospitality. I could go on about the incident but I will not because the solution is simple in my eyes (basic customer service). What I will say is that I am totally disgusted with how my family was treated during this stay and even more disappointed that one woman can ruin a family tradition! read more

Stayed with a group of 25+ people over the course of 3 days for the Fourth of July and will never spend my money here again. Our last day here was spent by the pool where you are required to wear these blue bracelets that staff gives you upon check-in. One of the staff members asked a few of us where our bracelets were so we showed them to him. At that point he decided to stand over our family at the edge of the pool and continue to harass us. When asked what his issue was (since we already showed him what he was asking for) he became a smart ass trying to get the last word in being disrespectful. At that point he went and told his manager (Patti) what had happened. She comes over and asks to count our bracelets. We were one bracelet short and it belonged to a 1 year old girl who obviously lost it at some point. Patti tells us that unless the one year old has a bracelet on she cannot use the pool because that is their policy due to people sneaking in and using the pool. AS IF it is possible that a 1 year old baby would be able to sneak into a pool by herself! LOL. Mind you, the group we were with rented 10 rooms over the course of 3 days at $350 a night plus money spent on food, drinks etc. A simple check on their computer would have all our names and information. Obviously, after paying all that money we were not going to tell a 1 year old she couldn't swim with the rest of us so we stayed in the pool. At this point, Patti called the police and 3 police cars show up with sirens in front of the whole establishment to try to make an example of us in front of everyone like we were a bunch of criminals. We are families. Married couples with children. We explained the situation to the officer and he was very polite and understanding of the situation. He was actually irritated that he had to show up for such nonsense. Everything was settled and we got to stay at the pool. I will NEVER spend one red cent at this establishment ever again. The way we were treated was despicable and I urge anyone who even thinks about staying here to do some research and stay at any one of the other hotels in York. With prices like that, they should learn better hospitality and figure out a better system for replacing lost pool bracelets without calling the cops and treating their customers like hardened criminals. Very disappointed. My family goes here twice a year and gets several rooms (at least 8) each time. Unfortunately, my family just recently lost our grandmother, so we will not be able to make our trip this year. We called the hotel to ask to switch our dates or give us some sort of refund because of the horrible situation. The employees were extremely rude and would not give us our money or allow us to change the dates of our stay. We were semi understanding about not getting a refund (although anyone who will not bend their policy because of a death is unbelievably insensitive) but being terribly rude and not allowing us to move the dates of our trip was unacceptable. We have given this hotel so much of our money, but we will never attend again. read more

This hotel is a sad excuse for a place meant for hospitality and we didn't even get through the doors. My mother booked a weekend trip here for this weekend and was hospitalized to do serious illness, naturally our first concern was not to call this woman but to make sure my mother was okay. As would be anyone's first concern am I right? When my mother was stabilized and had seen doctors and had gotten five minutes to breath she called the woman to inform her that she would not be making it. The woman was disgustingly rude she runs the inn and the situation was nasty from here forward she spoke to my mother in a disrespectful manner she told her that she would still be charging her because it was her problem that she didn't call sooner my mom informed her that she was hospitalized and there was no way of knowing that before hand. She had none of the information needed to contact the inn no reservation number or contact info this woman had no regard for her well being and didn't even appreciate that my mother called at all. She even offered documentation of her hospital stay but nothing was good enough for this woman needless to say we will never be using this in again, imagine if it was your mother? How do you treat people in such a way? Still mind blown, and disgusted. The idea that someone let's this woman operate their inn is unfathomable. Take your business elsewhere there are plenty of family owned inns that respect and appreciate their guests this is not one of them. read more

My mother gave me a gift certificate for Christmas for $500.00 to the Anchorage. I tried to use it last week but was told I could not use it. Apparently it's a 2 part gift certificate. I have the statement that was in the gift. It shows amount, reservation #, date, time, credit card info, who bought the gift certificate, my name on it, everything. My mom was never given the other part. Patty, the general manager showed me what my mother should have received, it basically looks like a post card from the anchorage. There is a spot for your name and reservation #. I called my mother, she said she never received this. All the info was on the paperwork that we had though, which was the guest statement. Patty, the general manager, was so extremely rude to me. I was there with my 3 young children. My mother then called to speak to Patty to explain that she never received the "paper card" that Patty was talking about. Again Patty was so rude to my mother on the phone. Patty looked up my reservation number and told me the gift certificate was never used but that she will not accept it without the other part. Again I told her we NEVER received that. She had all our information. She would not let us use it. My mother was out $500.00 because of this. Patty was so rude to both us us. I asked her why she can't just issue us a new one and cancel the old one, if we had all the info and she knew it was never used. She told us its the policy. I will never go back to the Anchorage in York. My family has been going there for years, but with a general manager like Patty I will never go back there. They basically stole $500.00 and was then rude to all of us. I was so disgusted. I can not believe that someone like Patty is running that business. It's straight robbery. All the customers in line behind me were shocked that she would not honor the gift certificate. Another customer in line even spoke up but Patty was just ignoring him. At the end of our conversation, Patty said "leave or I'll call the police on you." I never raised my voice, I was polite, she just didn't want to hear me because other customers started to speak up because they were mad for me. read more

Where do I get started...we decided to come here last minute on a whim ...we wished we had stayed home...first off our bed was advertised as a queen bed which would have been fine but it was clearly a full size. The TV remote was dead , and once we got the tv on there was no way of changing the channel...the bathroom was incredibly small with the vanity outside of the bathroom....turn off....parking was so tight...there was barely room to walk in between vehicles. ...but the absolute worst thing about this room was the air conditioning unit....it sounded like a jet engine cycling through the motions with the sound decibels off the chart.....replace it!! We stayed there recently for a wedding and I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. I overlooked the rooms which are in desperate need of updating for what I thought was a friendly efficient staff. My opinion definitely changed after realizing some items were left behind. After calling one day after checkout I was assured someone would follow up with me within 24 hours re the missing items. I had to call them back and of course the items were conveniently never found even though we were able to give detailed specifics as to where they were left. Ive travelled all over and on the rare occasion left something behind, it has always been returned to me. Although I was at fault for leaving things behind, it is completely wrong for staff not to turn in lost items and also not to follow up on a phone call. read more

This is a perfectly adequate family vacation lodging. Since I was there on my own and wanted a peaceful ocean getaway, I was disappointed, but that's not the motel's fault. The view was nice but I couldn't open the windows to listen to the surf. And with the room door opening directly to the balcony, leaving it open left me in full view of everyone walking by. On the plus side, it was a short walk to the beach and a nice fish restaurant across the street. read more

Where do I begin? My husband and I have been married for 25 years and literally work 7 days a week, having a weekend off is not an option for us with our jobs. This was our first day off since November. We booked the room for a Monday, normally we go up to Portland Maine, but hubby had a business meeting at noon on the next day, so we figured we would look for a place closer to home. I did some looking on line and found the Anchorage, the price was good and it was directly across the street from the ocean so we thought we would give it a try. We arrived and as I checked in I was greeted by my first name because the man saw my car plates from Massachusetts and he said there were only 6 people checking in so it was easy to figure who I was. He then went into what we were not allowed to do, reading each thing out loud and making me initial each item "that could get us thrown out"....really? (my husband and I are late 50's, no we are not going to have loud parties or bring animals into the room and we don't smoke. We had a room in the Atrium, on the 3rd floor since we had seen the reviews that the higher floor the less noise, (having a 2" gap at the base of our door certainly isn't keeping noise out if they are busy), it was the very front room facing the ocean. The state of the room was nothing as it was represented on the web site, but we agreed we would overlook the huge cracks in the walls, the paint chipped table, the huge gap under the door and hope for the best. We opened a bottle of champagne and then turned the heat up in the room, it was pretty chilly in there. It was quickly clear the heat wasn't working, so we tried to call the front desk, no dial tone. Did a little checking and the phone wasn't even plugged in. We fixed that and called the front desk about the heat, he said they would send someone up. The maintenance man arrived and tried to turn the heat up, took the cover off the heater unit, (even if it did run it was filthy, not what I want being blown into the air!) and after some time fiddling with it discovered it had no power doing to it. He fixed that and boy, was it loud! Once he put the cover back on it was much worse and he said we would never get any sleep with that noise, he would just leave the cover off since the clatter was better with it off! We really weren't ok with that, we didn't need a heater unit cover leaned against the wall and a dirty unit to look at. In the mean time, I had gone on line and found another hotel in Portsmouth that we had stayed at before and we just wanted to have the room charge reversed and check out. The front desk was not having any of that, we could check out but they would not be reversing the charges. The maintenance man came back with another person (his boss???), who they both agreed the noise from the heater was unacceptable. They told us they were going to replace the entire heating unit and if when they were done it was still loud they would have us change rooms. We said we didn't come up to Maine to watch 2 guys change a heating unit, they assured us WE wouldn't be in THEIR way! They said it would take them at least a couple of hours, we could tell we were stuck there so we got our jackets and left to drive around, see some sights and find a place to eat. Keep in mind, this is a big place and they only had 6 people checking in, plenty of other rooms to move us to. As a business owner I would have at this point moved a couple to the best room I had to make up for everything and try to gain a customer, but customer service was not high on their priority list. We came back to a new heater that a least worked, The next morning the same man who checked us in was the same person to check us out,he didn't even ask how our stay was, no apology, no discount, just a quick "have a safe drive home". read more

My families 2nd stay here...first stay we arrived at time of check in and was told there would be a 2-3 hour delay getting to our room (we got in our room at 6pm). The lobby was filled with upset guests and hotel mngmt was LESS than accommodating, in fact, very RUDE at times.The rooms were decent and pool was fun with easy access to the beach so we decided to give it another try this past weekend. Again, decent room, had fun in the pool and nice walk to the beach. My son went to take a shower before bed and the tub began to fill up (drain broken), it filled up so fast me and my husband were unable to shower, it was 10 pm and we didn't feel like dealing with a maintenance call with a young child trying to sleep. I called the front desk to alert them of the issue and RON who calls himself the supervisor responded with "ok", I paused and said "well, we would like it fixed in the morning"..Ron sighed and said " ok". Come morning I went to the front desk 9am to let them know we were heading to walk the beach and asked to fix the shower as we were going to a family event that afternoon. Ron stated in his rude tone " Ya I'll send someone over". Upon my return @ 10:15 the shower was fixed and with a 11am check out I asked for a 1 hr extension to allow time for showers. Ron's response was (huge sigh again) " I need you out by noon SHARP"!!! Umm ok, I'm a paying customer who's family still has chlorine all over them and a huge family event to attend in 2 hours and yet I'm being yelled at for asking for a 1 hour checkout extension by RON the miserable supervisor...is this guy for real and how does he have a job working with customers? A "sorry for the inconvenience " would of been nice, however, complaining to Patty the manager will get you nowhere, she's just as rude. I think Ron and Patty need a new job where their locked in a cubicle with no human contact. read more

I have to just say that my family and I have stayed many times in the past at the Anchorage. My children practically grew up there. Since they're older now, we all go to different places however, we're all traveling together this fall and the Anchorage was my go to place to stay. That's until I read the recent reviews. I cannot believe this is the same Anchorage we went to so many times. A bracelet to use the pool? Are you kidding me? We're traveling with 4 children ages 1,2,4 and 5. I can't imagine if one of them lost their bracelet that they would be asked to leave the pool. It would not be a pretty site if someone told them to get out, that's for sure. There are so many other places to stay that have the same kinds of views and amenities that staying in a place that police their pools is not worth it. They aren't cheap either! So I'm sorry to whoever owns the Anchorage but my family and I will no longer be staying at your hotel. I will also pass it on to other family that stay there to let them know what's going on. I'm just glad it wasn't like this years ago and that we have the fun memories we have. read more

I am giving this review a three because of the location. We stayed in the atrium building which was fine. We were told we were going to have the Gardenview (view of the parking lot). With a very small deck which you couldn't even fit a chair... This was disappointing. Starting at 7 AM the building was very noisy and there is no place for just adults to relax and enjoy the pool area. In my opinion very expensive for what you get. Lets start be saying if I could minus stars I would! Have been to this hotel many times in the past and have had no problems. Clean rooms convenience of beach across the street and friendly staff. However, the most recent stay was on the Fourth of July with a large group, we had 15 rooms rented. On July 5th it was over 90 degrees and most of the little ones were tired of the beach so they decided to stay at the pool. All was good until a gentleman approached someone in our party and asked him to remove his two year old daughter from the pool and tell her that she could no longer swim. Taken aback by this request the dad said NO. The reason they did not want her in the pool is because she lost her bracelet. She was a registered guest and the dad asked for a new bracelet, and was told that they only give one bracelet. The dad told the worker that he was not going to take her out of the pool and the worker told the manager. The manager then called the police and they came along with 3 police cars. You would have thought someone was getting arrested. The policeman went to the pool area and discussed the issue with the mom and dad. They were told that people were sneaking in to swim and that was the reason this whole mess started. After a long discussion with the family they left and did not make this child come out of the water. A short time later the bracelet was found at the pool area. I have never been so upset with management than this day. This was absolutely ridiculous!!! We will NEVER stay at this hotel again. BEWARE OF MANAGEMENT AND DO NOT LOSE YOUR BRACELETS PEOPLE!!! No, just NO!! Especially if you have children. I am mortified that staff actually contacted law enforcement regarding an incident of a guest not having bracelet on their toddler!! The staff at the pool was very aggressive which in turn ended up in a verbal confrontation. The manager, female arrived on the scene and it just got worse from there. Law enforcement arrived (scary for my 11 year old) and seemed to quell the comotion over the toddler not having a bracelet!! To say it was upsetting while on VACATION would be an understatement. I would not recommend this inn to anyone and only wish I had done my homework prior to staying there. Seriously, find another suitable place, I think staff is very unprofessional and highly incompetent to handle even the smallest of guest services. I cannot imagine how they would handle something more serious and I'm not willing to find out. I would give 1 star, but I have to admit it was the location of this inn that impressed me. We arrived on Friday, New Year's Eve. We were staying with family and a group of friends, most with young children. Friends of ours had stayed here the previous year for New Year's and told us you could be near the kids if they were sleeping/in the room but still have a nice time relaxing by the pool. We have relatives that stay in Wells during the summer so we were familiar with the area. We were very much looking forward to the get away. First - We had booked our room on the ground floor which stated it had a 'garden view'. WELL - there WAS a VERY SMALL garden (think small patch) outside our balcony/patio but our view was the parking lot. We could not leave our slider curtain open or everyone would see right into our room so we had to keep it closed which made the room dark. You could jump over the garden and be in the parking lot. The mirror in the room was not clean, our toilet clogged, and they had given us the wrong remote to the TV so we had to change the channels by hand. With the exception of the mirror; the toilet and remote were taken care of the next day. We could have gotten another room but we were told we would have to pay more. We did not want to be apart from our friends and family members, PLUS pay extra, so we made the best of it. There were also small black bugs flying around the pool area that made their way into our room on our last day. In addition, we were told when we checked in that there were to be no gatherings after 10pm New Year's Eve in the Atrium building where we were staying. We were told it was because there was trouble the previous year, there was noise from a wedding earlier that year (IT WAS A WEDDING! DID THEY EXPECT SILENCE??) and they had just done work around the pool. However, our friends had brought drinks and food to the pool area the night before! We were told we could go to the main building until 12am and discreetly bring snacks. The Atrium building is the third building in back of the main building and main strip (ocean view building). I don't know about you, but we were not going to bring small children outside at 10pm to bring them over to another pool. We were never told when we booked the room that there would be restrictions on New Year's Eve. They even tried to charge us an extra fee when I originally called to book the room because it was a holiday weekend. I ended up bookng online to avoid the 'extra' fee. Our friends paid THREE SEPARATE FEES for the same type of room on the same floor. The halls were monitored constantly - I don't think hotel staff should treat paying guests like potential criminals due to unfortunate events earlier. The hotel was not even half full. Our building maybe had 3-4 other couples in the building besides our group. If they were worried about groups gathering, it would have been nice if they offered us other alternatives to do so WITHOUT CHARGING EXTRA instead of making us all go in our rooms. Another couple were locked out of their room because their keys would not work to open the door, nor would any other key the on-site staff had work. They had their little boy asleep in there! A cop even came to the scene - nothing. The room was finally entered by a friend climbing through the window after removing the screen. We were told by the maintenance person the next day (after our friends checked out), that there had been problems with that door and another door in the past. WHY DIDN'T THEY FIX IT? That is a fire hazard! We will never stay there again and will be sure to let others know about our experience. read more

Nice view, although large poles block many areas, room was clean and decently decorated, bathroom was ridiculously tiny, had to stand beside toilet to open door, whole bathroom arrangement was terribly designed., so much wasted space and yet no place to put anything. Comfortable bed, unfortunately there is no soundproofing between rooms and the man next door snored nonstop. We ended up getting up at midnight and heading home, I would never stay here again. read more

Four stars - yes, I'm a fan. I have traveled here a few times. It's is absolutely perfect if you are traveling with kids. I'm not sure of the exact name of the room that we book, but it has a small room off the main room with either one or two sets of bunk beds. This is always great for two reasons: extra space if you are traveling with extended family and it also gives you some much needed space especially when naps are necessary. The room was always clean when wet arrived. The location of this hotel can't be beat. You are right across the street from the beach. So less distance needs to be covered when lugging all the towels, coolers, chairs, and beach toys to the beach. The beach at York is beautiful - yes the water can be a bit chilly but what can you do? This hotel also offers two pools - one outdoor and one indoors. There is an area at the indoor pool when food and drinks can be purchased. Between the pools and the beach there is so much to do. Directly across the street is a small restaurant. We have eaten breakfast here, gotten lunch to take to the beach and also had ice cream at night. York is such a great place to travel to with some much going on. I would not hesitate to return here and would recommend it to anyone. read more

I've been staying at the Anchorage Inn for a few years now and always stay in their Oceansuites building. Although it is pricey for what you get (almost $500 a night for the first floor and $500+ for the second and third) the proximaty to the beach and the private pool for the suites building is what draws me back. This year though, will probably be my last. The suites building has become a free for all. You are supposed to wear a VIP bracelet to use the private pool and hot tub but we watched people walk straight from the beach, use the pool and return to the beach with no one asking to see a bracelet or asking if they were even staying there. The bracelets have become a joke, if you are going to give them out then you should require that people wear them. A 16 year old girl, isn't going to question people at the pool about whether or not they belong there. We also watched a man throw a full ice bucket full of ice from the third floor balcony onto a bunch of cars in the parking lot (he was trying to reach 3 women walking by but missed by a mile). There are kids running up and down the halls at all hours of the night. I talked to another guest who said she called the front desk to complain about the noise so it obviously wasn't just us complaining. It used to be a nice quiet little sanctuary there and instead of being a priority because of the $$ you are spending to be in there, it is an afterthought. Our room was cleaned the first day at 4pm, just when we were returning from the beach to relax and get ready for dinner. The pool was cleaned at 10 am after there were guests using it and they all had to get out while it was cleaned. They offer happy hour and serve complimentary beer and wine from 5-6 each day. Well, every day we went, the concierge person had to spend the whole time making hot chocolate for the 20 kids that were in there. Kids shouldn't be allowed where alcohol is being served #1 but if they are going to offer them a happy hour too it should be a half hour before or after the adult one. We just left, it wasn't worth the hassle. They offer continental breakfast (donuts and bagels) which was ok. All in all, I used to love staying there but after the money we spent this time and the realization that they are charging 5 star prices and giving you 3 star service I think I will research other options for next year. read more

My husband and I decided upon a last minute get away to York on Sat July 23, 2016. I looked at a room at the Anchorage Inn on line. There was one "queen" room and one king suite. The queen was showing at 267 and the kind was $550! I went back on a few hours later and the price on the queen had jumped to $300. We decided to book it. I think it is comical that you have only 2 $ signs on this place. First of all we were put on the first floor in the middle of the strip of motel rooms. It is clearly not an Inn. Two cheesy chairs were out in front of the door and we had a view of the front ends of the cars in the lot. The stench of Clorox was overwhelming when we walked in. There was barely enough room in the bathroom to turn around. My husband and I stay at 4 and 5 star hotels and have paid the same amount of money for a decent room and much more if we travel to the Carribean Islands or Nantucket. I have never seen a room that cost $300 plus tax and other fees in a hotel that resembled a run down Motel 6. I had to go to walk to the main office for ice in a plastic bucket with no liner. Totally disgusted. We considered just leaving and driving home we were so disappointed. We could not see over the roofs of the cars! The air conditioner was so loud and it was in the 90's so we had to run it, neither of us could sleep. It was just plain awful and we may as well have thrown over $300 into the ocean and kept driving. read more

We have stayed here every year during the summer for approximately six years now. Two years ago, in 2007 they built the new building with high-end luxury rooms/suites. They're wonderfful but way, way overpriced for the area. I realize it's high season, but the rooms just don't support the location. It's not as if Long Sands Beach offers fine dining, martini bars, and other cultural attractions along the strip, and I'd expect that for a $400 a night room. THere is no room service, and not even complimentary bottled water or soda in the mini-fridges--cheap, cheap. They do offer a happy hour for guests who stay in that building, but again, it just wasn't worth. We won't stay there again. In addition, the other rooms are also overpriced. They need remodeling, and I just don't want to pay over $200 for a tiny, dank room. We have been contemplating looking for another vacation spot for our families. read more

Ive just had an awful experience here for the very first time in 20 + yrs..took my girlfriend and our daughter away for a 2 day trip to the Anchorage.. arrived late about 4 30 pm and headed right over to the beach after checking in..came back to the room and noticed the carpet was completely soaked with water or something..didnt bother us too much at the time but when we came back from a night in town we pulled the sheets back only to realize that the sheets were covered in sand.That was enough to call the front desk and have them come change the bed, seeing it was 930pm and my baby was very tired..Room service comes takes off the dirty linens , puts new linen on the bed then puts the dirty comforter back on the bed..strike 3..Told room service that was not very good idea seeing it came directly off of the sandy sheets..Im guessing thats what they do...(makes you wonder right?)Called front desk to complain, they said theres absolutely nothing they can do, no other rooms available and "manager " was home resting comfortably in her own nest..boiling point was reached so we packed up our stuff and turned the keys in, thinking this was reason enough to get a refund the next day or some type of "sorry"..oh no..next day the manager was called and the whole thing was turned up-side down and the blame was put on me and my family..Apparently we wet the carpet and put the sand under the sheets while we were out...hmmm right?..the manager refused to take responsibility for her housekeepers obvious lack of proper cleaning procedures..She was probably the crudest person that Ive ever dealt with over the phone and Id never again waste my money in that place again..She said I was "negligent"...huh...Im negligent? Because the carpet was soaked , there was sand inside the freshly made bed sheets..and the manager didnt even apologize? thats my fault..SHOCKED..who would drive 2+ hours at 4pm, spend 200 dollars for a night, and then ruin a family get away for no apparent reason at all?
