Great location. I always find parking. Inventory is ok. Some stuff should have been thrown away. Other stuff is ok. Many of the staff is ridiculously pretentious. 'Don' think he's running a high level, Fortune 500 company. Looks down on customers. And always sets them straight on something. R-U-D-E. He needs to chill out in his twilight years. I finally was able to stop in at the Andover Thift Shop. I went last month in July, however they were closed for the ENTIRE month of July. My first impression: Clean, well displayed, nice quality items, too many signs and cameras, and prices too high on many housewares. So high I laughed to myself. Clothes are clean and some nice high end brands. Clothes are priced better than housewares. TOday they had a discount of 25% on blue tags. Service was pleasant. read more

I frequently stop by The Andover Thrift Shop and NEVER leave empty handed! It's truly my favorite thrift shop!! Cindy and the rest of the staff are ALL so friendly and helpful! The store is so clean and well organized! Persistently perched right by the ballet studio and across the Old Town Hall, the Andover Thrift Shop has been standing since before the days when it was *cool*, or even okay, to buy used stuff...especially in my hometown. In fact, I distinctly remember a time in the eighth grade when I walked into class wearing a boyish striped cable sweater in the style that The Limited and J.Crew were selling at the time. All the popular girls and boys were asking me where I got it, and - silly me - I was embarrassed to answer, and feigned coyness. Over the past decades, I've been here enough times to say it is one of the most unmutable establishments anywhere. The place is still run by a cadre of elderly ladies - some sweet and accommodating, others grouchy and suspicious - who shut the store during the prime months of summer to supposedly replenish the store, or close their doors if there's so much as a snowstorm or an optional holiday or even a cold snap. The arrangement of the store is always the same. When you walk in, clip-on earrings and costume jewelry are arranged around and underneath the counter carefully guarded by whoever is on duty. Gloves, jewelry boxes, aged greeting cards for a quarter each, and framed prints of Monet paintings span the counters to your left. Directly ahead are tables of crystalware, dull china sets that were once fine, kitschy plates bearing recipes or university insignias, obsolete cooking appliances, past-season board games, and early 20th century sporting equipment. To the right are a box of skivvies that you can't believe are being resold (i.e. synthetic double D control-top bras in unbecoming shades of nude), then racks of sweaters, blouses, skirt suits, heavy coats, and ratty PJs, with the occasional fur coat or dainty feathered hat peeking out from here or there. To be honest, most visits are a miss, especially on the first floor. Directly across a staircase leading to generally greener pastures in the basement is a shelf that still specializes in Sidney Sheldon novels and books-on-tape for a buck or two each, and the occasional vinyl worth picking up. A journey down the wide stairs leads to menswear and shoes on the left and $1 bargain items, children's clothing, and bedspreads on the right. If you are an overweight man with middle aged aesthetics and would like to wear XXL Lacoste sweaters or ugly golf shirts without irony, you will do VERY well here, all of the time. The button down shirts section would also be a total score if you were a male; all shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns from LL Bean, J.Crew, Brooks Brothers, and less prominent but high quality purveyors for $3-$4 and you just can't lose. So many times, I have rifled through the collections, truly resenting that I can't wear anything and don't have a guy in my life worth shopping for. The bargain section also has oddly good deals half of the time; cute t-shirts bearing the Gecko so popular in the '90s, simple polarfleece pullovers from vintage EMS, and maybe something made of corduroy that's hideous to everyone's eyes but your own. The bedding section is 99.9% miss; waxy polyester twin sized flat sheets, hand crocheted acrylic afghans, and that kind of depressing stuff, but then 0.1% of the time, you will walk out with a permagrin by finding a queen-sized matelasse cotton Chambers blanket for $25. The price point for utter junk and hidden treasures are very similar to one another here, so take care not to get tempted by a slightly pilled $8 cashmere sweater that you could find in a larger thrift center for $5, but do trust your instincts to pay up for the occasional invaluable find. At any rate, this being an honest business, you won't be getting ripped off...at least not intentionally, haha! Another main difference between this store and others is that it is quite homey; you can leave your heavy coat and purse up front with the vigilant ladies and lay away your selections for two or three days if you need time to think. A parting caveat: there are no dressing rooms, so consider that when you choose your shopping outfit. And when it's a busy day, prepare yourself to politely compete for the one mirror on each floor with a bunch of other covertly half naked middle aged bargain hunters of the town. read more

This thrift shop has a nice collection of clothing, linens, and housewares. It also has a small collection of books and shoes. It is clean and well-organized. The staff is anywhere from rude to gracious. I was expecting the clothing selection to be a little better, given that's it's Andover. It was all pretty much soccer mom stuff the day I was there. That's the area of the store where I encountered the rude employee. She jabbed me with some hangers she was handling, she shoved all the clothes down the rack as I was trying to look at the other end of the rack. The clothing prices are pretty high too. Not outrageous, just not a bargain. There's no dressing room and sales are final. The housewares were more fun. I got a cute Italian plate and a vintage glass piggy bank. The plate was $6 and the bank $2. The bank was 1/2 it's original price because they were having a sale on all pink tagged items. I found a vintage tablecloth too. I didn't buy it because it was being sold "as-is" for $12.00. Turns out it had pretty large nasty stains in a couple places. I think $12 for a stained tablecloth is way too much, no matter how nice it was originally. They had a couple craft kits that looked like new. The retail store price had been 10. They were selling it for $4. Ok, but not great. The woman who sold and bagged my purchases was very pleasant. So, stop by if you're in the area. But it isn't worth a drive of more than a few miles, in my opinion. read more

My friends & I enjoy going to this thrift store, although the shop hours make it tricky to do so often. I have found nice skirts, retro earrings, strange kitchen wares and more. The store is pretty well organized, and not overwhelming, as some larger thrift stores can be. Prices are very reasonable, and they accept local checks. read more

Went there today. Found a couple few things priced very well. Happy I went. Cash only....so had to go to an ATM. I will be returning. :)

The hours are impossible and the selection can be a hit or miss, but if you are around the area, it is worth checking out. I found vintage 80s Levi's I have been hunting for everywhere (common, but impossible to find the right size...!) and a vintage Dooney & Bourke satchel that I was looking for as well, but most of the time I turn out empty handed. The old ladies that work there are usually nice and let you explore and shop undisturbed, which I like but I guess others might not like that. read more

One of my co-workers only shops at thrift shops, however, she has one suit nicer than another. I figured she was spending a fortune on clothing, but she let me in on her secret. I was absolutely shocked. I was still skeptical about going to a thrift shop and felt a little awkward to say the least. I read up on ATS and decided to give it a try, after all it's Andover, right? I didn't know what to expect, but kept an open mind, I was greeted by the sweetest ladies (reminded me of my grandmother). The shop is clean and well organized. The clothing is pressed; in fact there was a woman in the back room ironing. Some of the clothing is dated, but there was still a good selection. The hours aren't the most convenient, but then again the women that work there work there voluntarily. That is commendable. The proceeds support great causes. After browsing for an hour or so, I purchased three suits, two pair of brand new (never even worn) shoes from Talbots, a Coach Willis handbag (authentic and in unbelievable condition), a brooch and a Thanksgiving decoration for just under $70. I am chuckling now because I could easily spend $70 and more on one pair of shoes. I had such a good experience and was really moved by the women there that I will now be volunteering my time on Saturday's to help them out. If I could give them more time I would, but I am a full-time working professional. If you're thinking of visiting a thrift shop, don't be skeptical like I was -- there are some incredible bargains! If you're looking for bargains don't miss the Andover Thrift Shop...on a recent trip we found labels such as Anne Klein, Escada, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Jones NY. We came away with a pair of men's Cole Haan shoes, barely worn, for $18. Among the pocketbooks we found Dooney & Bourke, Vera Bradley and Kate Spade, plus a collection of cashmere sweaters and Pashmina blend wraps, all in great condition. Not just clothing - In housewares there's an eclectic range of china and glassware, artwork and other small treasures. Highly recommended! read more

They are an alright store, the ladies there didn't seem that bad to me. They just don't care if they sell anything so don't expect them to negotiate. It is probably aimed at an older crowd looking for nicknacks and things like that. read more
