Below are the goodies that I bought and gifted for being the top 20 customers in line. What I bought: 1. Bunny pudding: SO CUTE! I've seen this trend everywhere and am so glad that they have their own version. It was adorable. For $6.50 I was a bit skeptical because I thought it would be cheaper. However, it was too cute! It was good. Subtle in flavor but the texture was nice. It was thick pudding. I think it took me 2 days to nibble on it with my mom so we could enjoy it. The jam with it WAS AMAZING! I loved the slight tartness to it. The only thing was that the jam was red and it was behind the bunny so it looked...yes...you can be creative there haha. 2. Salted egg yolk cookie. Love salted egg anything and was surprise to see this as a cookie! Love the Asian flavors! It was lovely. It also had a little bit of a leaf on it and it created a little curry flavor taste. I don't know what it is but combined with the salted egg, delicious. It was my first time trying a more savory cookie. Gifted: They also gave me a salted egg yolk cookie which was great, I got 2 haha. 1. Chocolate macaron. I don't really like macarons because they're usually too sweet. However! This was good. Not too sweet and the chocolate flavor was present. It was a good size and it was super cute 2. Matcha macadamia nut cookie. I've had this one before, still good! 3. Brownie chocolate cookie. THIS WAS MASSIVE! Huge~! And yet, still chewy, fudgy, and full of chocolate. Yum! If you're a chocolate lover like me, you'll like this! I will drop by again in the near future!

I was on the look out for some delicious cake. Unique flavors and beautiful decorations just happened to be a perk. Minh, the owner, the matter how busy it gets, is always so personable and enthusiastic. She brought two visions for two of my daughters' birthday themes to life within a reasonable range. One was a Mermaid birthday and the other Avatar themed. Both times we picked a pandan cake layered with pandan buttercream. Wow the structure held up very well after thawing out for a few hours. Cake was incredibly soft and moist without being too sweet. The Asian flavors mixed with a conventional American twist made for the perfect marriage. I really hope this bakery does well. It is such a treat to order cakes here. Will definitely have to try the durian or lychee next time.

They definitely have new and inspiring ideas but the quality and the flavors haven't changed a bit. Elbe (the co-owner) is also the Mastermind / Chef and comes up with crazy ass recipes that just smack. I could talk all day about their sweets but the absolute bomb for me is their chicken salad. The chicken salad sandwich at sweet and salty is -hands down- the best chicken salad sandwich in Portland period!!! It's got big chunks of chicken and a little sweet from some cranberry, some crunch with celery and Walnut and then some peppery spice that smacks you a little bit, but not too much. They keep it real simple and have a great white bread they put it on and, frankly, I can't get enough. I usually get one once a week or so depending and it never gets old. So one year and going strong. Definitely check them out!!!

It looks like they make everything in the back and seems to be a small mom and pop operation. They had a variety of cookies and other small treats to choose from. I decided to go with the Oreo cookie and smores one. Both were delightful. The cookies had a nice soft chewiness to them and were the perfect way to end our lunch.

When my favorite bakery closed several years ago, I was faced with needing to find a new source of…read morebirthday cakes. I seem to be the birthday cake guy in my circle of friends... I firmly believe a birthday celebration isn't a celebration without a cake! Helen Bernhard Bakery has been a consistent source of last-minute birthday cakes when I need them. The greatest thing about this bakery is that there's almost always a few cakes in their case that are ready and available. Because I'm not super picky, a Frozen princess works for random occasions like my 48-year-old friend's birthday! But there are generally nondescript cakes available that can be personalized. Did you know Helen Bernhard Bakery is over 100 years old, and it's one of the first woman-owned businesses in Portland? There are many stories circulating about Helen's fiery personality, and her no-nonsense business tactics. I love celebrating the few remaining businesses that have roots going back to the early days of Portland. It's wonderful hearing stories from longtime customers, and learning about the positive impact these businesses have made in the community, and the sense of nostalgia many people have for them. It means a lot to me to live in a city that values history and tradition, as well as what's hot and new. Thanks, Helen Bernhard Bakery, for always being dependable, and having lots of great products that make celebrations and entertaining a breeze.

Previously I have been coming to this bakery for all of my last minute cakes so this year I thought…read moreI would purchase a custome cake because my daughter wanted a very specific cake. She wanted red velvet. She also wanted a very specific color ( burgundy/bordeaux) and unfortunately they could not match the color. They did say they would try, but it ended up being a purplish eggplant. That's ok, I understand it might be hard to match a color. But as a result of adding color to it they had to use buttercream on top and the cream cheese inside. Here's where I feel like if I had known what I know now, I could've helped remedy the issue I had with this cake and hopefully my review can help them or someone else. It's not that the cake was dry, but I believe the ratio of cake to frosting was really bad. I posted my photo to demonstrate. The cake had 2 layers but they were very large layers and the cream cheese frosting in the middle was very thin. As thick as these layers were, they really should have cut each layer in half and frosted them to make it a 4 layer cake. So it's not that the cake was dry, but we couldn't really swallow it down because it was all cake. I would also like to state that this cake cost $85. But when I picked it up the refunded be $13.25 so it was a $72 cake, which is still very pricey for this cake. I had better luck and it cost less when I would just buy their cakes out of the case last minute. They were cheaper and had more filling to them. I don't think I will custom order a cake from here again. It just wasn't worth the cost and it didn't look like the photo I sent for inspiration.

I like the interior, it is bright white with pops of orange. I got "one of everything" of their baked goods which they make easy to do. (They also have savory meals.) It was $40.75. I shared with three others - some items are easier to divide than others. We enjoyed each item. Highlights were the pandan banh, pineapple cake, and canelé. Some in our group don't love coconut so the mango roll and egg tart were not quite as beloved, but nothing wrong with them. That leaves the crème brûlée and pandan waffle as "middle of the pack." But again, all were tasty. They're unique flavors and textures - not something we'd order all the time but really great to try!

After stalking their Instagram longer than I'd like to admit, I finally sent my husband on a solo mission: one of everything, the bún Berlu, and the kẹo mè xửng huế latte (inspired by one of my all-time favorite Vietnamese candies, how could I say no?). Everything was delicious. I love traditional Vietnamese food deeply, but what Berlu does - centering high-quality ingredients and letting them speak - just works. The súp tasted like something made with care in your family's home kitchen, the kind of dish you genuinely cannot find anywhere else. The balance of flavors, salty to sour, the soft-yet-chewy meatballs dragged through chili sauce... I inhaled the entire bowl without coming up for air. The desserts? I genuinely cannot pick a favorite. Each one earned its place. If I had to find one small bone to pick, it would be that I prefer my coconut milk with a slightly saltier finish, but that's purely personal preference, not a real complaint. The latte was outstanding. The coffee itself was high quality, and the peanut candy flavor came through clearly - present without being cloying. Exactly what it promised to be. As I slurped the last of the broth from my bowl, I told my family we'd be back. Next time with my Vietnamese mother in tow. She'll be the real judge ;)
