Disappointing . I was so hyped up on this turn of the Century bakery . My German Chocolate cake was like a cake I can get anywhere . It was like "clipart " . Common . Shared . I get it that you're a local thing . Legend with neighborhood . Maybe that best suits the regulars . Although I will not be a regular . It was nice to try , though .

I submitted photos then prepaid for a cake. I had an 11:00 am pickup time. When I arrived to pick it up, the cake had a couple of smudges and the writing was as if my child could have done it. They didn't add Anonymous which was one of the most important details. I also had to go to a store while pressed for time to complete the cake on my own. Before leaving I asked for the decorator to fix the smudges and add the word , but they had left for the day. I let the cashier know that agreed with me about the cake and that there should be someone there to fix or correct mistakes. I didn't feel it was worth what I paid. I called and left messages and an email with no return phone call or follow up regarding my complaint.

I visited Helen Bernhard Bakery back in October. Service was okay and it was to-go place. There were a ton of pastries to choose from along with breads as well. I got some sesame sandwich bread and two Halloween cupcakes. The bread was good. The cake part of the cupcakes was good but the icing wasn't the best. Overall, it was a good bakery visit. I will definitely come back to try more of their baked goods.

King Cake rings supreme! We looked all over the Portland area for king cakes to celebrate Fat Tuesday. Helen Bernhard's came through like a champ! The cakes are PERFECT! Fully equipped with little babies inside and such joy from all who participated in the fun! We also loaded up with the most beautiful Mardi Gras cookies! They are not only beautiful but delicious and reasonable! Thank you so much Helen Bernhard for honoring this rich tradition all the way in the PNW! We'll be repeat customers next year! (you also make the BEST German Chocolate Cake anywhere in town)

This is just a classic old fashioned bakery in the very best way. Super quick and friendly service (one employee was dealing with the most particular and exacting customer ever and never showed an ounce of frustration). There are so many bakery cases filled to the brim and it was hard to make a decision! We settled on red velvet and German chocolate cupcakes, chocolate petit four, chocolate covered coconut macaroon, and a swirly danish of some sort. All absolutely delish! My favorite was the petit four and I wish I would have gotten one of each variety. Their buttercream is exceptional and delicious. I forgot I'd wanted to try a donut as I've heard they are great...ah well next time! Prices are really great. They have adorable cookies and decorated cakes too. I think there were some discounted day old items as well. There is a small lot for parking out front of the shop, but be prepared to park along the street.

Let me start with if you do not visit, there is something seriously wrong with you! Are you craving a bakery that has amazing pastries, cakes, cookies, bread and, oh, did I say ECLAIRS!? Don't' walk, don't run., race to this location. Oh wait - no, you might beat me there and purchase my sweet treats! Why do we visit Helen Bernhardt's often? While all of their products are delicious, their chocolate eclairs are probably the best I have ever had (and we have traveled the world across Europe (think Italy) to Asia (think Japan) to Latin America and of course across the U.S. (home). The location is easy to find. It is a cute old house/bakery. Go up the stairs and open the door to the sweet smell of baked goods. We are always greeted and welcomed quickly and I am afraid to say the team there is starting to get to know us. :-). The store is always clean and if you come early, stocked with a variety of amazing sweets (check out the pictures which have been taken over multiple trips). I don't have to say I will be back. I have to say, I need to monitor how often I will be back because the product is so amazingly delicious. This bakery is on my top ten list and for me, that says a lot. You will not be disappointed. Please just don't take my eclair before I get there!! (LOL) Now that's funny!

    Deliciousness!

Walking before my schedule appointment....I noticed this bakery and I had to check it out. There was a good amount of people already inside order dozens of yummy items. I ordered a snickerdoodle and a lemon square. I couldn't even wait. I ate the snickerdoodle while checking out Service was gentle and quick! She finished before I finished the cookie. The place itself feels like a home and smells like sweetness. Definitely worth checking out!

They rotate flavors often, but Raw Honey & Sea Salt and Cinnamon Sugar are always available. The chai flavors are also excellent, especially the King & I, inspired by Thai pandan tea. It's warm, lightly spiced, and packed with flavor. Consistently delicious, fun seasonal flavors, and always worth the stop. One of my favorite donut shops, hands down.

I just had a chance to interact with their mobile food truck at an event, which was such a fun aspect to the overall event. I got a quad of donuts and a chocolatey chai! Also I will say this: Pip's offers a free birthday dozen, which is incredibly generous gift. My birthday falls around the holidays so I usually can't make it in, but I want to be clear that I have absolutely zero complaints about that. Adults, especially, should never grumble about not receiving a generous freebie. The fact that they offer it at all speaks volumes about the kind of business they are!

They're known for creative flavors, but creative does not mean it tastes good. The famous Blueberry Bourbon Basil donut was so doughy and cakey (hard type), blueberry jam was too sweet and completely overpowered the subtle taste of bourbon and basil. The apple fritter was the same, just sweet, doughy, and nothing special. We also tried the Cointreau Crème Brûlée, it is a custard donut comes with an orange liqueur pipette. Because the blueberry donut completely lack of bourbon taste, we actually used that pipette to squeeze the liqueur into the blueberry donut. We had the coffee, they're just average, nothing special. Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. My mouth is watering describing this now, a true sign I'll be returning to experience this delicacy time and time again. There are three locations of Twisted Croissant in Portland, and this is the only one I've visited. The interior has a classic Parisian bakery vibe, clad in white subway tile from floor to ceiling. The bakery case in front of the store is beautifully stocked with fresh pastries, perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea. However, be advised, there are only two tables in the back of their public space, so it's not particularly inviting space to sit and enjoy your breakfast. Given the location, I assume there is outdoor seating in the summer months, but don't quote me on that. Regardless, run here if you haven't been. These baked goods are worth the visit!
