I can't believe it took me so long to make it to ATK! This spot is crazy easy to get to. Literally across the street from one of the Wellington brown line exits. I wouldn't characterize this as super authentic Thai, but definitely approachable for everyone. My friend and I got the following: :: grilled pork neck :: Delish. My Chinese mom has taught me that this part of a piggy is the best cut in terms of texture and flavor. ATK does it very well. So my boyfriend and I went to this place with friends the other day for dinner. It wasn't really busy inside for dinner. The waitress said it was slower due to COVID lately. So anyway, I wasn't really expecting anything great because it just wasn't terribly busy and we've tried so many Thai places that are usually just "meh." WRONG HERE! The only thing I can say is that this place is so underrated. I think it comes down to expectations. First, their menu is huge with so many items I had never heard of. I was expecting regular Thai food and this place offered so much. Service was friendly but sorta laid back and I enjoy that. I decided to try this bbq pork dish because I had never heard of it. Okay, it was seriously good. Came with a bed of rice, hard boiled egg, and the most tender pork covered in sauce....DELISH DELISH. My bf ordered his usual pad Thai and he loved it. We also had pineapple fried rice, panang curry and their vegan vegetable combo. We all agreed it was by far the best Thai we ever tried. Went to eat here solely based off yelp reviews. Walking in, no lie, I was kinda put off by a smell, which kinda smelled like sewage. I asked my friend if he noticed it, and he said it was the smell of steamed rice cooking, so I just tried my best to put it out of my head. Somehow I missed that it's cash only and BYOB, so don't forget that, if it's in your plans to eat here! Chicken pad Thai was creeper for me. Have to agree with previous comments that the service is very poor. Completely uninterested waitress who made us feel unwelcome. The food itself is very good with the exception of the Thai Ice Tea which was very small and just ok. Moved on too grilled squid, big pieces of squid Just a tad overcooked but still very good the dipping sauce saved it. I really enjoyed this place! Two of my friends and I were craving asian food and found ATK's on Yelp! The photos & reviews looked great so we came to check it out & it did not disappoint! The restaurant is both BYOB (with a $1 uncorking fee per person & a liquor store literally right next door) as well as cash only (there is an ATM in the restaurant just in case). I think this could be a deterrent for a lot of people, but it worked for us in this case! We were sat right away and the servers were friendly. We loved the food! The prices were incredibly reasonable for a high quality asian restaurant in Chicago and the food came out quickly. The quality of the food was also great. A lot of flavor! My friend and I split both the Boat Noodles & the Kao Soy Noodles. Warning: the Kao Soy Noodles are incredibly SPICY. So spicy that we couldn't eat them (we think it's because of the pepper flakes in the dish), although, the flavor was still good! My favorite dish was the boat noodles! SO MUCH FOOD. We couldn't finish it all and I don't think I could've finished the boat noodles if it was the only thing I ate. I feel like there aren't that many of those places anymore and saving money by not buying drinks at a restaurant always ends up being a good deal. Went on an early evening on a Saturday and actually wasn't too packed. One slight complaint is that we did wait a pretty long time for our food, it seemed like everyone was getting their food except us. I ordered the spicy Pad Thai which comes with big slices of jalapeños. A perfect level of spiciness for me but I wish the dish had more noodles. It seemed mostly chicken and jalapeños. I came here with a group of friends on a Wednesday night and had high expectations. My high expectations were fulfilled! I love Thai food and can't get enough of it. Unfortunately, there really isn't great Thai food in the Wicker Park/Logan Square area so I am willing to travel far for it, but we really need some better options around here. We had to wait a bit for our table but they were very nice about it and gave us a complimentary order of veggie spring rolls which were presented very beautifully. It's a smaller place but has a nice decor/ambience. I love Tom Yum soup and this one was absolutely perfect! The broth was heavenly and spicy. There was a healthy serving of fresh vegetables in there like the broccoli and lemongrass. Absolutely, mouthwateringly delicious! Pad See Ew is a favorite of mine at Thai restaurants so we got an order of it and it was also scrumptious. The wide noodle was prepared well with a generous serving of the firm tofu and stir fried broccoli. It was also spicy, which made it even tastier. I liked that this was moist because sometimes you can get Pad See Ew and it's dry. This has a perfect subtle sauce, which is what it's supposed to have. Now, ATK also knows how to make an amazing curry. Being a fan of red curry, we got the Pad Ped Curry with tofu. The flavors were so complex and spicy. I absolutely loved it. It had the perfect balance of spice and flavor to it along with actual, real vegetables like eggplant, jalapeño, basil, and pepper. I am so tired of going to restaurants that have no vegetables in their curry! These were fresh, delicious vegetables that complimented the red curry flavor so well. My friend had the Pad Ped Catfish and I was lucky enough to get a taste of it! The catfish was breaded to perfection so they know how to make tofu and catfish. The portions were very generous especially for the reasonable prices (about $11 per entree). I appreciate the fact that you can find unique dishes here that you can't find at other Thai restaurants. I cannot wait to come back here, just wish I didn't have to go to Wrigleyville because it's gross. It pains me to write such a bad review of a place when the food, or what we had of it, was so good. ATK has an amazing menu of Thai food that you won't find anywhere else. Unique dishes that span beyond pad see ew and red curry (although both of those dishes are on the menu). Went for a date night on Easter. We started with the pork neck and the spring rolls while our green curry, garlic noodles and pad prik crispy pork went in the works. The pork neck came out first. It was tender and charred, delicious flavor, and came with a spicy-tangy-sweet dipping sauce. It was so good! Unbelievable. Our spring rolls came out and they were also amazing. A great vegetarian option, and something different from the regular rice paper rolls you see. These were wrapped in something more like a crepe and with another amazing dipping sauce. We were off to an amazing start, but that's when the trouble started. About half an hour after our spring rolls we hadn't gotten our entrees. At first we didn't think much of it. Things can happen. We're understanding people. But then I looked around the restaurant and out of the maybe seven tables in the restaurant only one had food. Our server came over to apologize for the food and assured us our entrees would be coming shortly. About fifteen minutes later, and still nothing. To reiterate, I understand that restaurants can have bad nights, that things happen. But what was the final straw for us was how many takeout orders we saw coming out of the kitchen, and how short the pickup customers had to wait for their food. From the time we started counting there were at least 10 takeout orders that came out of the kitchen, and it looked like very full bags. And this wasn't one HUGE order. This was ten people coming in to get their food. After waiting an hour for our entrees we decided it was time to go. I appreciate that ATK has a strong takeout business, but I think it's disrespectful to ignore the people sitting in your restaurant in favor of to-go orders. We paid for our appetizers and told them to cancel the rest. On my way to the restaurant I was planning my review of ATK. I expected to give it 4 or 5 stars. It has an amazing reputation and it was on my restaurant wish list for a LONG time. It's a shame that this was my first visit to this restaurant, when I had been longing to try its flavorful dishes for years. It's really sad to me that this is the first impression they've made for me. No one wants to go out and sit around at a restaurant for an hour waiting for their food. Something was clearly wrong with the pacing on their takeout orders. Lots of restaurants do a robust takeout business, but I've never had to wait like that. Honestly, it's insulting to the people who came to the restaurant to eat. I still hope, someday, to try them out. I think I'll need to give them some space before then. Anyway, the lady was cordial and nice to our group of 5. The food was just not what we expected, mediocre at best. The tom yum was great (same or comparable to other thai places), pad see ew kinda tasted like pad thai, the boat noodles were very different from what I gather, and the rice plate with pork leg was decent, but nothing was amazing. Wow, it lives up to the hype. Let's get the bad out of the way first. The restaurant is small and cramped, even. The service is very slow because it's mildly understaffed. This was my first time here and I love it! Cash only place but they have an atm in the back. This is the perfect place for a quick bite to eat. It was quite peaceful and the sun shines through the place and it's perfect for pictorials. We ordered Chicken Satay, Dumplings, Calamari, ATK Friedrice, and Eggroll. We pay via Zelle, Venmo, and maybe even with BitCoin They conveniently have an ATM inside that charges your $2.50 fee. Otherwise the food is very good. Went to Andy's Thai Kitchen last night with some friends and I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience here. They don't take credit cards, but I was able to overlook this flaw because this place is BYOB, the food is delicious and the employees are so nice. When I was leaving the host even said, "Bye Norm. Hope to see you again." My response was, "You definitely will kid." I think the bottle of wine I finished before my entree came had me feeling like Rick Blane (aka Humphrey Bogart's character in Casablanca). My friends begged me not to take pics of the food, so I apologize there are no pics to accompany my review. However, I do recommend: 1) Pad Mee Kati - my friend loved this dish. He said it was flavorful and had a good amount of shrimp. 2) Basil Crispy Pork Belly - was so delicious and so spicy. Anyone who knows me knows that me and spicy foods don't get along, but some how I was able to finish this dish with no problem (think the bottle of wine helped me). The pork belly was definitely crispy, but not burnt or overlooked. Loved this dish. A must try! 3) Basil Fried Rice - another must try entree! My boss hasn't consumed a carb since the last presidential administration- I tried to force feed him a doughnut once and he may be still holding that against me. Long story short: 1. Some trusted friends strenuously recommended TAC Quick, particularly for grilled squid. 2. I love grilled squid. 3. I tried the grilled squid at TAC Quick and loved it. 4. I read that Chef Andy left TAC to open Andy's Thai Kitchen. 5. I beat a hasty trail to Andy's Thai Kitchen. 6. The grilled squid was superb. The other fare that I tried, particularly the basil fried rice, was very good, but the service was not. It was...let's say confused. There was a bit of a language barrier which prevented us from understanding the description of Thai iced tea. My wife instead ordered a regular iced tea, which never arrived. Although the server passed near us several times on his way to other tables, we could never catch his eye. When our entrees came out, my wife asked for it again, and the waiter repeated back "Iced tea? Okay" as if he were hearing the order for the first time. Then what he delivered a minute later was, of course, Thai iced tea instead of regular. We didn't bother asking him to switch it. On the plus side, he did take some time later to ask about our previous experience with the restaurant in this space (Fresh Sushi and Noodles) and explain the relationship between old and new. We can get solid Thai food in pretty much every neighborhood, and I'm not sure that I would come down here just for grilled squid, but I would definitely consider Andy's as a strong option the next time that I'm in the neighborhood craving either. read more
