If he let people know about his history working for BMW North America and his experience at the dealer level, he would gave to hire an employee or two and get a bigger place . In the entire State, I know for a fact there are maybe 2 other BMW specialists at his level. He has the unique blend of hands on experience of the old school days when one had to repair and tune by "feel" and sound and the modern times when one plugged the bike into a machine for diagnoses . JR adjusted my valves, then I noticed the bike mpg went down considerably, so I checked the valves clearance , and I found them way off, so I bought shims from the dealer and did the work myself and the mpg went back up again. read more

Rode all the way to the west side to see him. When I got there he was leering about how hot the neighbor's daughter was as she drove by and what he would love to do there. Weird intro. Spent a few minutes looking at the bike and misdiagnosed it immediately. He said he would call me back with a quote and timeline. I called him back 2 days later. No answer. Sent him an email. No answer. Called him back a week later. No answer. Emails. No answer. It's been a couple months now. Very unprofessional. I found a different tech to do the work and he found the actual problem. So I guess I was fortunate he didn't do the repairs he suggested which would have temporarily fixed the problem but not dealt with the actual cause. Lucky break. read more

We settled on a price for a job and when I got there he checked the bike out and it ended up being less than what he thought it was going to be. He seems to be very knowledgeable. Had my bike BMW 2010 R1200GS service & maintained by JR for many years. Great work, any problem that is difficult to diagnose JR will work with you to find and get it fixed. Personal communication works best JR is a certified BMW mechanic and a one man show. Since he is personable you need to be also, leave your "big dealer attitude" and work with JR and you will get great results. JR is a nice enough guy and knows more than most about Airheads. His shop came highly recommended by a co-worker and I was eager to get in line to be one of his customers. My 1976 R90/6 had a "hiccup" in the transmission's 3rd gear. JR and another mechanic told me I must do a rebuild and not to let the transmission go without repair for fear of more damage. His waiting list is months long. I got in line and was able to get my bike in line after a couple of months of phone calls and emails. (Phone calls are usually a miss) He got to the bike 2 months after receiving it. A grand later, the problem was still there. Hard to believe he hadn't test-ridden the bike and felt the same problem as before before delivering it to me as "fixed". When I picked up the 'repaired' bike, he offered no parts from the rebuild. (Should have been my first clue) Now his waiting list was months longer (Even for a re-do!?) before he would even take it back into the shop. He re-re-built the trans (down for the riding Summer, sadly) and whatdya know, the transmission was a MESS. I rode it a few blocks and the shift lever wouldn't go down past neutral, stuck "up" in second and, of course, the third gear problem was the same. Un-rideable. The bike was off the road (mostly sitting in his shop, the rest, sitting in my garage, waiting for space at ACC) for more than 10 months total. Keep in mind that the bikes at his shop are put outside in the elements every day, rain or shine. So, 10 months, 2 "re-builds" and $1300 later, I had to have the bike taken to Valdi's Moto Zone in Torrance for an actual rebuild. There, two weeks in the shop and a thousand bucks and it rides as it should. I couldn't recommend VMZ more. Skilled, Timely, reasonable rates and pleasant to deal with on all levels. (oh, and an in-door facility) JR has refused to refund my money, offer any discount or even talk directly about the mishap. Poor business practice to say the least. A sad, costly experience from what should have been a straight forward job. read more

Really bummed about this place, I had high hopes too. I was recommended by another shop because JR is an expert with old BMW bikes. I can't even count the amount of times I called, left messages, and emailed this place. Only reason I kept with it was because I spoke to JR face to face and he told me to email him or call and leave a message if I didn't hear back. The shop who referred me warned me about his lack of communication and I figured he was probably really busy. IT HAS NOW BEEN 4 MONTHS WITH NO REPLY. I never was angry and always very patient, I know how busy a person can get these days and technology with emails, phone calls and all can get overwhelming. I gave him the benifit of the doubt for ages. I decided maybe he wasn't receiving my calls/emails so I stopped by again. He was super nice and said to resend and he would get back to me asap. We spoke about my bike and he asked to send him photos and said he could probably get me in in the next week or so. NOTHING!!! AND NOTHING!!! So....... I give up. :/ JR seems like a super nice guy and I really wanted to work with him on my bike but this is beyond unprofessional. If you don't want to work with me simply say that in a reply and I will gladly move on. I do not recommend this place, communication is everything this day and age. It is not hard to simply reply to someone that you are busy or whatever the reason may be. I don't write bad reviews and I don't like to but this is a bit much. read more

I live 4 blocks from this location and have ridden and owned BMW's since I was a teenager, (over 40 years), but despite multiple kind/polite attempts at just getting a call back or return e-mail from Angel City since 2011, I have never received any response. I go to BMW of Hollywood only because they're the next closest to me, but still need 1.5 hours on buses to go pick-up my bike, or drop off for service. read more

JR is a good mechanic and nice guy but has a terrible workflow. Be prepared to wait about 3 times as long as whatever turn around he promises. He hardly answers the phone or returns emails. The only way to get your bike to the top of his list, or get in touch with him, is to stop by and bug him. multiple times. And so many people stop by, he gets nothing done. It is frustrating as a customer. A simple appointment book and appointment only service would help his business out. Or a secretary. read more

JR is a talented, detail-oriented BMW moto mechanic with a personal touch. He knew his way around my 53k mile R1200GS extremely well and did not just focus on the task at hand, but also gave the bike a proper going through and made suggestions on its set-up.
