This was a fantastic and reasonably priced place to go for Thai food. The ambiance could use a little work, but it was a great place to go for a casual meal. I went on a Tuesday night at about 7:30, and there were only 2 other tables eating. The descriptions on the menu were very clear, and the portions were HUGE! Definitely had enough for lunch the next day. I also really enjoyed that the waitress left a small pitcher of water on our table. That was an added bonus, being a person who drinks her fair share of water during dinner! The only improvement I would make would be a wine list!:) read more

I adore this Thai place. Their tofu is made of magic. I order the Raa na noodle every time, and always finish it much to the dismay of my tummy. They lose a star because of their decor and also I feel like they are really holding back on the spice level. I order a 6, and am consistently wishing I had gone to an 8. I've been to many Thai restaurants around the greater Grand Rapids area and Angel's is by far the best. I've eaten here about two to three times a month for the last year and only ever had one problem: during ArtPrize they accidentally used salt in lieu of sugar in their Bangkok Chicken. They were extremely busy at the time but they immediately replaced the dish for us and then removed the item from our bill, and then brought us an extra rice at no extra charge. Since that time I've eaten there many more times and have had nothing but exceptional food and service. read more

Tasty but disappointing; I ordered the green curry, & as soon as I tasted it, knew it wasn't green curry. The waiter agreed & took it back to the chef, but he returned it to me saying it was green curry. I ate it because it was good, & they did do a good job of making sure it was spicy enough, but it simply didn't take care if my craving for green curry. I have eaten green curry all over the world, including Thailand, & even went to a cooking class in Bangkok where we made green curry- I know what green curry should taste like, & this wasn't it! Their pad thai was also off, but again, tasted good. I asked the waiter again at the end of the meal if that was really supposed to be green curry, he said no, & didn't know why the chef said it was. I would not eat here again. There was also no free soup as the other reviewers mentioned, not that that was a big deal, but I'm wondering if it's under new ownership, as this is not the authentic Thai taste I expected. read more

Don't eat here if you've actually had good/real Thai food before, you will be disappointed. I ordered my favorite Thai dish: drunken noodles (otherwise known as Pad Kee Mao) and it was just white noodles with a few green/red peppers and bamboo shoots in it. NO sauce and NO BASIL to be found. I called the restaurant (since I had ordered take-out) just to make sure that they hadn't given me the wrong order and they insisted that this is what Drunken Noodles is. They said that their drunken noodles does not have basil in it. Look up any recipe or definition of drunken noodles on the internet....the BASIL is the soul of that dish. The noodles also were white, limp and tasteless and clearly had not been stir-fried the way that Kee Mao or See Ew noodles are meant to be fried. So disappointed and will not be trying this place again. read more

Three of us came during Art Prize lunch rush. We were seated quickly and the food was excellent! We ordered 3 different dishes (noodles, cury, pad prik) so we could share family style. Everything was well seasoned but not too hot for my mild taste. My friend who has eaten at many Thai restaurants said it was the best Thai food she has eaten. We were visiting family from out of state but will definitely come back to eat at Angel's Thai Cafe. We met the owner so we could tell her how much we like the food and she and her daughter are a delight. You will not be disappointed. read more

The food is pretty good but the charge you for EVERYTHING. It ends up being too expensive. They charged us extra for choosing brown rice instead or white. They didn't tell us that they were going to do that. Besides that, not too bad. read more

We had lunch here and my husband who is used to ordering a dish at 10- got a meal which was completely inedible. we were then charged for the additional noodles needed to mix it to make it less spicy. it was still inedible. my dish was no better. worse thai! read more

hit it or quit it? hit it. snapshot: probably the best thai food available in grand rapids proper. the food is great, the location is perfect, prices are reasonable, and the menu selection is not only vast but also flexible. the biggest pitfall? horrid ambiance. full review: grand rapids has a thai problem. erb thai express is a joke and erb thai proper is overrated. the bar is set pretty low, but with that being said angel's thai vaults it with ease. it's a restaurant right? so the food is heart and soul of the review, and angel's delivers on multiple counts in spades. they have great pad thai and curries, i consistently hear their tofu is amazing though i've never had it myself, and they have bubble tea! the menu is vast, portions are large, and the chef is flexible with modifications. prices are very reasonable, especially considering their portion sizes. thai restaurants seem to tend to have larger portion sizes in my experience, so with that frame of reference angel's falls somewhere in the middle. service is fast and courteous, sometimes there are un-bused tables, and their hours are weird (they close then they're not busy at the end of the day). it's also a small place, but i've never needed to wait for a table. i love the location, dead in the middle of downtown GR with easy parking and plenty of attractions nearby. my biggest complaint with angel's is their absolutely garbage ambiance. the place has poor lighting and i feel like i'm eating on the set of 'the office' to boot. what does it tell you that ambiance is my only complaint though? all in all a strong stop on the GR food scene, and look, it's not a brewery!!!! read more

I was in Grand Rapids for a convention and staying at the Amway Grand, so Angel's Thai was conveniently located, almost right across the street. I got a 10% discount by showing my "Downtown Dining Deals" map and my convention badge. The food was traditional Thai and very tasty. The veggie spring roll appetizer was crispy with a sweet and sour sauce. For the entree, I ordered the Gang Garee with chicken. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the chicken was tender. The yellow coconut curry sauce was delicious. I asked for mild spice and I would say it was mild. I'm sure they'd make it hotter if you asked. It was served with white rice. I also had jasmine tea. Bill came to $13.36, not including tip but including the 10% discount. I recommend this place if you like Thai food and find yourself in downtown Grand Rapids. read more

I feel bad writing a one-star review... but I had some pretty bad pad thai here. Also, $12 for a small dish of pad thai with chicken is kind of overpriced when I'm used to paying $8-9 for a huge dish in expensive Seattle. The pad thai wasn't seasoned like typical pad thai- it was really greasy and tasted more like random fried noodles. The part that really sealed the one-star deal was the chicken. It tasted like small frozen chicken pieces had been microwaved and thrown on top of the noodles. I couldn't eat any of the chicken and didn't feel great after eating the noodles either. read more

Called ahead for a quick order of vegetable spring rolls and good thing I put change in my parking meter because they weren't ready once I got there. Service wasn't anything to be happy about. The lady who handed me my order was quick and dry. She walked away as I asked if there was sauce in the bag. Big let down, especially given the promising reviews. Have had excellent, average, and lousy Thai food around the world. And, despite high hopes for this place, found this food to be among the worst ever. The Yum Nua tasted like the meat was spoiled--You know when meat has been left in the refrigerator too long and it develops that smell that says "don't cook/eat this!"--well, that's what it tasted like. The Pad Nang (possibly their version of Panang? Tried to confirm this with our server, but she seemed to know little about Thai cuisine. E.g., told us that "no, Drunken Noodles are not traditionally spicy b/c they're not curry-based." What?! Drunken Noodles are usually so FANTASTICALLY spicy that they practically have to come with a warning label! And sometimes DO come with a warning label!! That's the whole point about Drunken Noodles!!)--but back to the Pad Nang: it honestly tasted like burnt tires. And, as you might have predicted given the above foreshadowing: the Drunken Noodles tasted of nothing--really, of nothing. The Tom Kai was all salt and not much else. And although I'd never before met a Thai Iced Tea that I didn't like, even their Thai Iced Tea was below average--TOO sweet--maybe try reducing the sugar by half? Would also be nice to consider using a vegetable other than green bell peppers--rarely have I observed such a green bell pepper overload. Really really wish that I had better things to say. Since the possible meat spoilage issue made us worried for other customers, we did tell the server and manager about our concerns, but they were evasive and not very helpful. "Thanks" for the $5 dollar discount (on a $50 food bill) for serving us beef that needed to be tossed-- didn't even refund the full cost of an inedible dish. Please note: we were very careful and respectful in the way that we reported the spoilage concern to the staff/manager. Can only hope that our experience was an aberration... read more

The only reason this place gets three stars instead of two or one is their pad thai and their fried tofu. For whatever reason, it is THE BEST- yes #1- in the area!! Their portions are too small for their high prices. They blame the location. Eh. I've tried a few of their other dishes as well, but they're not even worth mentioning because they were that far off the mark. If it weren't for their delicious, delicious fried tofu and pad thai... This is the second time we have attempted to order crab rangoons and been told they were "all out for the week". The Pad Thai is good and the alternative appetizer recommended to us was decent as well. We were in town for ArtPrize and happened upon this small Thai restaurant downtown. Quite plain Jane, but that is fine with me. The problem was the food. Really more Chinese in style than Asian. The spicing and flavors had practically no Thai flavors. Couldn't detect any galangal or lemongrass or really any Thai flavors. Certainly edible, but not what we expected from a Thai restaurant. Best Thai place downtown! The service during lunch is so fast. The servers are super friendly and if you can get a table you can be in and out in 25 minutes at the very most. Definitely a must stop, not fancy at all but awesome food. If you like spicy but can't handle the crazy Thai heat get a 7 out of 10 spicy and you won't be disappointed. read more

We were traveling in Grand Rapids for work staying at the Amway Grand. We arrived later in the evening on a Sunday and started walking about to find food. We stumbled upon Angel's Thai, one of the only places open despite a very crowded ice skating rink right across the street on the Rosa Parks Plaza. I'm glad we stopped in. This is some of the best Thai food I've had stateside. The list of curries was long, far beyond the typical red/yellow/green/massaman standards. I got the Gang Pha curry and could easily have eaten it every day for our stay. It was very spicy, salty, and fancy and unlike any curry I've ever had before. It had tofu (my choice of protein), bamboo, eggplant, and green beans swimming in the sauce and I sopped up every last drop of it with jasmine rice. My companion had a fish curry that was also amazing, and the kids enjoyed the Pad Se Ewe. Everything was perfectly balanced and just wonderful. I took off a star though because despite the amazing food, the service was terrible. Our server didn't know what the different curries were, had to go ask the kitchen then come back to tell us. The server also brought out only two of the four entrees initially and set them on the table next to us. Then she disappeared for a solid 7 minutes to attend the register before finally returning with the remaining two dishes we'd ordered. Meanwhile he kids were salivating over their food being right there but not having been served to them. Luckily they didn't want their food piping hot because the food was just getting cold sitting there. Then when it was time to leave, the serve could not be bothered to bring us our check. I finally stood up and left with the kids while my partner stayed behind to pay and pack up our leftovers. We made it all the way back to our hotel before partner texted that he was leaving the restaurant. Still, I'd go back again. read more
