Basil Noodles with shrimp is what I had. Mild plus, very flavorful and enough shrimp to fill me up. Portion size was just right. Not too little, not too much. I wasn't in an indulgent mood today. Angel's Thai Cafe - Thai Near Me - Grand Rapids, Michigan

We went here during Art Prize 2010, because we noticed that the restaurant was in front of the concert. Angel's decor was mainly a sea foam blue with nothing too fancy. The place itself was fairly clean, but not too dirty. For starters we ordered the chicken satay (Thai fried chicken on a stick), and some nong tong (Thai fried chicken wings). The satay was okay, but the nong tong was very delicious. Although there were only six wings per plate, we couldn't stop ordering it. It was extremely enjoyable. A perfect blend of fried chicken wings mixed with an oriental zing. Decently greasy and crispy, and the meat, was marvelous too. Throughout the concert and at the end of the night, I probably had three or four plates myself! We eventually ordered some fried rice too. I thought it was A-OK. there wasn't really anything special about it. Just the traditional fried rice. Once we all were full (though I think I could have had one more plate) I would like to recommend this place to all the people who enjoy new tastes, and I'll know that they'll like it! I ate here for lunch one day. Ordered what I always order at a thai restaurant: curry pad thai with chicken. Service was sub par--they couldn't figure out whether I was ready to order or not. The dish itself was okay. One real gripe I had was that the noodles were extremely greasy. The smokiness that usually pad thai dishes have was non-existent. If they had toned down the grease, it would have been a little bit better. I think I'll stick to Bangkok Taste or Erb Thai from now on. read more

Don't do it. Save your money. My friend and I went here last night for the first and LAST time. We sat down at 6. Since we are familiar with thai food, it didn't take us long to figure out what we wanted. We got tom yum soup and that was our first frustration. You can't get just a small portion. You either get a dinner portion or nothing. So we shared. They put two shrimp in the bowl. That's it. My friend asked for brown rice. She comes back. Sorry were out. OK fried rice. You can get a dinner portion or nothing because we don't do sides of fried rice. So since you don't have what I asked for, you can't make an exception? No. We waited and waited and finally at 6:48, I asked our waitress when our food was coming out, since the table that came in well after us was eating, we felt this was appropriate! Finally the food arrived at 6:52. I got pineapple shrimp and had all of two pineapple in my food. What bothered me most was that my shrimp had the tails on. It's rice for goodness sake. I don't want to pick through and pick off tails. Come on!! My friend said hers was just OK. We had a show at DeVos and literally took a few bites of food and had to pack it all up and go in order to get to our show. Oh and I like spice and medium is hot!!! We won't go back. Service sucked. This was my 2nd lunch for today and I felt compelled to rate it since it was actually great! Upon sitting down I was immediately greeted by a rather beautiful server, I actually had to tell her how pretty she was which probably was inappropriate, but what ever, she was beautiful. I explained that I had never been here and wondered if she could provide some feedback on what either her favorites were or what was popular. I ordered some hot tea, something she recommended which was so good! It was something with chicken LOL I feel bad because it definitely was extremely delicious. I did order the spice level a 5 which I could have probably gone to a 7 or an 8, the tea was refreshing and service was perfect! Since this was my 2nd lunch I was able to eat everything and get out of there just in enough time to get back to work and write 2 reviews. The fresh rolls were quite the opposite... they smelled like a dirty sink. The red curry was good enough to eat but not the best. The Tom Kha coconut soup was so bad I didn't eat it - it tasted more like a Tom Yum soup, no coconut flavor. I got my food as take out, if I had been there I would have sent it back. Went here during ArtPrize 2016 . Food was terrible. I ordered their curry pad thai and it was very bland. Their serving was so small too. Was it because they were swamped with customers from ArtPrize? I hope so. But they should not compromise the quality of their food and service just because there were too many people. The staff was very friendly but there was no follow up like: if we liked our food or if we wanted refills etc. I hope this review will help improve their business. read more

Nice little restaurant in the middle of a busy downtown. Stoped by for lunch while visiting Grand Rapids and ordered a pad Thai and fresh spring roll. The waitress gave me a fried egg roll and she said that's what I ordered. She said fresh spring roll is just called fresh roll. Anyways the fried egg roll was delicious. However the pad Thai was far from the Pad Thai authentic Thai restaurant serves. This one had no color and wet. The wet sauce over powered the noodles. read more

I have decided, that Angel's puts crack in their food. I am definitely a huge fan of their food. It just tastes so good and is the best thai I have had in a while. When I went here with 3 other people, it was empty when we walked in. Literally, within 10 minutes it was full. People kept trickling in and all of the tables were packed, with people dropping in for take out as well. I think the two little waitresses were not expecting this and they were definitely slammed for the next few hours. Despite that, the food and service were still outstanding. The fried rice is some of the tastiest fried rice! There's no need to add anything to it - my friend usually puts soy sauce on his fried rice, but no need here! You don't want to ruin it. I got the Kow Pad fried rice with pork, and also the pad see ewew with chicken. Both were so yummy. This is the first time a Thai place has finally served pad see ewew right, and it didn't make me sick! (success!) Everything comes with your choice of spice level (1-10). My friend and I split the fried rice and pad see ewew, both with a level 5 spice. I thought it was just perfect, but I know my friend (who loves spicy food) would have rather gotten a 7-8. The regular entree dishes come with a side of steamed rice, and everything on the menu you get your choice of meat to add. It's a pretty simple concept and it's convenient with a large variety of dishes to choose from. The desserts are good too!! Get the chocolate mousse! It's beautifully presented and really tasty. I thought it was quite rich, so I only had a few bites, but still a good way to end the meal. The atmosphere isn't all that exciting, but they definitely did remodel, which my one friend (a regular here) noticed and commented to the waitress about. According to her, they have painted the walls and added wall decor/artwork around so it didn't look so bare. So that's a plus, right? They're trying to improve their ambiance? Even after we got our checks (which did take a while since they were so busy and these 2 little girls were working their butts off), the waitress apologized for the "poor service". I felt bad because it was hardly poor! Maybe a little slow, but her and the other girl served everyone with a smile and they were literally running around every time I saw them. I'm glad they have so much business, but maybe now they know they should have an extra hand on friday nights. So the service was good, and the food was good. Even the next day as leftovers it left me wanting more. Only "complaint" is parking - of course you aren't going to find convenient parking in downtown GR, and we had to park 3-4 blocks away. Angel's is one of my favorite lunch spots. It's a bit small inside, but that's part of the charm. I feel hidden away in the middle of a crowd, which is sometimes the exact break I need during teh day. I typically order the curry fried rice with fried tofu. It's so good. I like spicy and typically go for a 5-6 on their spice scale. The veggies are fresh and the fried tofu is so crispy. I don't consider myself an expert on Thai food, but always find the dishes here to be fresh and tasty. read more

My sister's favorite Thai restaurant in Grand Rapids, so on my last visit, we went for lunch. Sis was over the moon with the food, but I live in a real food town with a huge Thai community and didn't find the food at Angel's to be very authentic. It was tasty and plentiful, but nothing I couldn't reproduce in my own kitchen. Service was spotty and I had to ask for basil (in a Thai restaurant, no less) once I could find our waitress, but we were there at 2:00 p.m. and the staff wasn't particularly interested in us. Curry was good and well-seasoned (I ordered a 3 on the heat scale and should have gone with a 5) I was shocked at a $35 lunch bill (no drinks, no dessert, small shared appetizer) and thought that was a little over the top for two plates of noodles. In fact, I would probably be giving Angel's two stars if not for my sister's enthusiasm for the place. read more

Went in to Angel's today with my brother who's never been there. I love their bob teas and I raved so much about them so he really wanted to try it. Two people were sitting down eating (one outside and one in the dining room) other than that we were the only ones in the restaurant. The waitress acknowledged us when we walked in and then completely ignored us as we were standing at the front waiting to order our teas for carry out. We continued to stand there for 5 minutes as she walked around and continued to ignore us. Another minute went by and a bunch of people walked in to eat and she immediately went to them to start taking their order instead of ours STILL ignoring the fact that she had customers waiting to order. She then turned to us and refused us service in front of a bunch of customers because she was "busy". Said, "Sorry I can't make your tea now because I'm busy and have to hand make them." As she kinda laughed and smirked about it. We were the first people in your establishment and it was empty for 5 minutes, you could have made our tea. You had MORE than enough time. But instead you lost a loyal customer because of your terrible wait staff. You had great food but I will never return to your restaurant because of the terrible service we recieved. You should really pay attention to who you're hiring because they are turning away paying customers. If I could give 0 stars I would. read more

I love their food. Service is fast and the Thai food is delicious! I frequent this place too much to be honest. I used to work there when I lived in Grand Rapids and had the opportunity to get to know the owners and their family. Even though I have moved 3 hours away, I still visit whenever I'm in the area. My experience with Angel's Thai Cafe was interesting. The food was relatively good. I ordered the Pad Thai entree with shrimp. The waitress asked how spicy I wanted it on a 1-10 scale. I went with a 5 and it was pretty damn spicy so be careful. The atmosphere was just not ideal. A strange older man approached my party's table with a plate of half eaten food and asked us if we wanted the rest because he was finished with it. It was really weird. Back to my meal though...the entree was kind of small for the price. For two people ordering Pad Thai, no appetizers, and water to drink our bill was over $25. That's ridiculous. If you want to charge that much money, make the dining experience fancier or the food that much better. read more

I really enjoyed the food. I have no tolerance for spicy foods, but if you ask for ,mild they accommodate. My husband on the other hand loves spice... and he loved it but eventually just tasted like pure chili powder. So be careful how spicy you ask for! Drunken Noodles were bland. It is my favorite Thai dish and usually it has dark/sweet soy sauce that flavors the noodles. Angel's Drunken Noodles didn't appear to have any of that flavor I have had at most Thai restaurants. Also had an order of salad/fresh/summer rolls, and they were a bit bland too. They also did not have a good dipping sauce to complement the rolls. Was looking for a nice dumpling/soy sauce or peanut sauce to go with them. The food was OK, but having eaten a numerous Thai Restaurants, I would rate this as average or not as good as others. This is based on the dishes I tried though. The server was very nice. read more
