Could not have had a worse experience, which I should have anticipated considering when my father passed 3 years ago and they tried to convince my sister and I that our father was over 6'5" and would need an oversized coffin which was substantially more expensive than a standard coffin as well as overheard two employees complaining how slow my extremely old grandma (with a cane) was walking down the aisle during the service and how it would never end. Below is the SHORT version: Angelus was called to pick my grandma up after she passed from her home (less than 1 mile away) and charged $600 which I felt was beyond ridiculous. The burial was being paid with a life insurance policy and as beneficiaries (sister and I) of said policy we were sent a document to be signed that needed to be notarized so insurance could pay Angelus directly. The document had items listed in it regarding her estate that we had no knowledge of (we were not trustees) so we let Angelus know they would need those removed before we signed a legally binding document; otherwise, we would have to have insurance pay us directly and then pay them. The items could not (or would not) be removed so we let them know how long it would take to get the money from insurance. Angelus proceeded to be in contact with other family members to pressure us to sign the document. I would have been happy to pay out of pocket but I don't have 10k laying around so we needed that insurance money (which was 10k). After the attempt at manipulation I was very suspicious and went over the burial contract again where I realized there was a general charge of $5,000 for "cemetery charges". My sister called asking what "cemetery charges" were and she was told it was for digging up the grave/burying my grandma; it was so high because she'd be buried with her mom and they would need to dig my great grandma up, dig deeper so they had enough room for 2 coffins, and then bury them both. I was thankfully able to find the plot number of the grave my grandma had purchased decades ago THROUGH Angelus and, lo and behold, when confronted with that plot number, her actual grave was miraculously found and "cemetery charges" dropped by almost half. They tried to say that the purchase was so old and hadn't been imputed into the new computer system but are you really expecting me to excuse that people purchase plots decades in advance and you're not going to keep your records up to date? That's literally your job. You sell people plots and then not keep track of it? Angelus at one point threatened my sister that we'd start being charged a daily fee for housing my grandma if we didn't choose a burial date (which my sister had already done). When my sister confronted our contact on this and told them if that's how it would be then they could redo the contract for the cheapest immediate burial, their tones changed. I find it funny that they tried to make it seem like we didn't care because she was there for 5 weeks yet they hadn't said a word when my dad had been there just shy of that long (he died a few weeks before Thanksgiving and a lot of out of state family asked us to wait to have the funeral until after Thanksgiving so flights weren't so expensive). Everything was finally settles and the DAY we were paid by insurance, they were paid. This place is an absolute scam and I wish I could write the novel that's deserved to be written about all the other things we went through between my dads and grandmas death. Had her plot not already been purchased, I never would have chosen them. read more

My family and I used Angelus services to help coordinate the burial process of my father's passing. This is my first time working with a funeral home so I was clueless. Thanks to my sister and counselor Ms. Doris we were able to work together to coordinate the best package to lay my father to rest via cremation and Veteran's burial process. I have to say funerals are quite the expense. The packages seemed a bit much but then again funeral costs aren't cheap. There were options to take away or provide items on your own, but it's up to you. I just wasn't a fan of some items being "required". You hear stories of the madness of selecting and paying but it's more to the process than most think . It requires detail, organization, communication and patience. I appreciate Ms. Doris for being patient with my family in our decision making process to get everything squared away. Only feedback I have is that the funeral home is a popular one so there were times where I felt communication was delayed, information was missed, or the office was not responsive. For first time families it is crucial to be attentive to response times as it plays a huge role in the experience. Overall, the Angelus team is not perfect but a good team to get the job done. Our experience was directly with the mortuary located at the cemetery, and we were less than impressed. While all the members of the staff were kind and respectful, the communication and response time to our queries seemed less than efficient. Oddly, our family has utilized Rosedale over nearly a century, but this generation will look elsewhere in the future. read more

Worst place ever to have your loved ones homegoing. They are only about the money and could care less about the families they are serving. The counselor that I had was Doris and in the beginning she seemed super sweet, but little did I know it was all an act. This lady spoke to me almost everyday after we had my dad moved to there location, until they received my money. The next day when I called to ask questions she refused to answer any of my questions stating an estranged sibling told her not to speak to me. I gave this lady $10,000 and then she tells me that she can't speak to me is beyond crazy. The services were mediocre and could have been better. The pastor didn't reach out to the family to get bio information they only went on the little information my sister provided. Then my mom had her services last week and they were horrible as well. When you have a homegoing service for your parents you want nothing less than the best. The pastor gave a eulogy that was a joke, he spoke about ladies of the nights, gang members and convicts at an 85 year old woman services. He was a disgrace to the cloth in my eyes by the eulogy he gave over my mom. I would never recommend this place to anyone including my worst enemy. Stay as far away from this place as possible. Never again will my family utilize their services!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I could give them no stars I would, but the only way to submit my revew is to at least give them one star. read more

I went for first time to a viewing at Angelus Funeral home. Inside the place is clean and very nice. The follow COVID19 safety standards. All the employees are wearing mask. They offer mask if you don't have one and prefer to wear one. They also have hand sanitizer. The chapel inside was very nicely decorated and the furniture was elegant and comfortable. We just attended a funeral for a dear friend at this facility. I was so impressed by all of the details of the service, from the beautiful pianist music in the background that created a flow for the whole service, to the beautiful words they chose, to the venue and the flowers which beautifully resembled our friends favorite color, purple. The woman who sang had a beautiful voice and many kind words to say at the end of the service. It isn't my time to go yet but I remember when my 1st love left me at the age of nine ( it was my father ), and three months later ( my big brother who was 25 years old ), and then my 17 year old big sister three months after that. Apparently, this is where a lot of my family have had their services, even before I was born and now I see why. Even in the year 2010 when my Grandmother passed away, I received that SAME warm kindness and respect. Usually, it's the funeral and then we're off to Evergreen cemetery and then it's time for the most delicious food my aunts, uncles and cousins can put together. The food be so darn good you almost forget that there even was a funeral . Our counselor Doris took care of all of our needs. She was very professional and ensured that everything turned out perfect. My grandmas funeral was Monday, November 9th. I haven't been here since I was a child but it's a very beautiful funeral home. Despite it being outside due to Covid , it was still very nice. Ms. Ethel sang a song and did a great job. The staff was very accommodating and nice. My grandma actually planned her funeral with Angelus about 12 years ago and she would've been proud. Where should I start? I always think that the best thing that anyone should do is read the Yelp reviews FIRST before patronizing any establishment. My family chose this funeral home when our family member passed. Ultimately, the service was beautiful, but not because of the rediculousness of the profusely rude staff, but because of the fact that we had to totally ignore these people during the service after all of the blatant disrespect to us, a grieving family, had to endure during the making of the final arrangements and preparation for our loved ones home-going. First, they try to rip you off in every which way that they THINK they can, and then some. From the printing of the obituary, to the floral arrangement selection. Looking at some of the typo-inflicted samples of obituaries that Angelus presented to us, we decided to go with another printer of our own choice. They wanted to charge us thousands of dollars for their arrangements, so we decided against purchasing a flower package. Thank god many of our friends and family members sent arrangements to the funeral home on their own so the flower situation worked out fine to their dismay. When it came time to view and approve our loved ones remains, that's where everything hit the fan. The nasty, rude woman who does the hair and makeup of the deceased was where the sh*t hit the fan. They put this lipstick on our loved one that was just completely wrong and wouldn't allow us to fix it. They already didn't allow you to bring in your own stylist so when we didn't approve of our loved ones face the lady copped major attitude and started snatching up and throwing stuff out of anger. So unprofessional of you Angelus Funeral Home. Moving forward to our family hour. Whoever the little angry, rude black man was sitting behind the front desk....he was completely out of line and didn't give a damn about it. There was a situation with the women's restroom by way of it being nasty, untidy, unstocked and just plain dirty. When I asked him if there was someone available to clean it, he rudely snapped back at me, "facilities is closed". Mind you, he never looked up and away from the magazine to make eye contact with me. When I finally had his full attention, he looks at me and said, "well which one of these old ladies messed it up? He commenced to arguing with me about who messed it up, and when I snapped back at him about his poor attitude and told him about himself, he looks back down to his magazine and said, "that's your opinion". By this time, I had moved around the desk to talk with him in a more civilized manner, another one of my relatives saw that I was about to lose my shit and came and walked me out the door. After all, our deceased loved ones remains were still there with these people. The next day at the service, more of the rude, pushy staff were present, and it only went downhill from there. After they were rudely instructing people to get in line in rows of two, all they really did was offend everyone to the point to where people were simply ignoring them and walked into the chapel how we wanted to. For these people to be in the business of bereavement, they were very callous and showed little or no sympathy and empathy for the grieving. I wish my sister and I had read these reviews prior to our experience. We used Angelus based on history, community ties and the fact that it was familiar. While our father had not been deceased for even 24 hours, we met with Tyrone Pleasant. He was 'pleasantly' dry. If you are immune to the grief of a family , find a new profession! It's shameful that as you're grieving, you have to call daily to ensure things are being handled. This is not a free service. I'm so disappointed and upset it's hard to even write this. How many people have to ask you the same questions because your counselor is ' out of the office'. I told the last evening I would let my peers no and they won't ever see me or my needs again. Although all my arrangements were made at Rosedale, their subsidiary, they were able to smoothly transition from memorial at their chapel to internment at Rosedale cemetery. Today in 2021 with Covid-19 at an all time high, a legitimate business who is unfortunately reaping great benefits cannot bother to get their act together rather their internet so that loved ones can support their family even from a distance. This is a shame and sad to say but this is a reason why folks are hesitant to support black owned or businesses who cater to people of color. In my opinion they feel they have to do very little to get or maintain our business. Angelus you have been a mainstay in the Black community, you can and should do better. We used Angeles recently. Our counselor Constance was very unprofessional, argumentative and just plain rude!. She started explaining the process, when we informed her of an out of town next of kin, she immediately said we couldn't start the process. She didn't bother explaining there could be other ways of starting the process. We then informed her we could conference call the next if kin then she said "oh ok". She explained about the rental casket they had only two choices she did not have a picture of either in her office. When we finally were able to view the casket a day later, we were told there would be no guarantee of the one we preferred to be used. She said it was based on the size of deceased. I said so there isn't a choice then? She said not really. That didn't make any sense to me!There were other employees coming in and out of her office while we were conducting business. She even remarked on she wish she could wear bright colored clothes instead of black all the time. We sat in her dusty office, were not offered coffee or water. She said she had a stash of water hidden but other employees would come into her office and take it. We didn't get the Guest register we paid for we only received the removed pages from the viewing. When we looked at our lives one he looked gray-green!!!! We immediately told someone and the makeup person came in and fix it! Are black people gray-green while alive!!! This business while is economical you get what you pay for!!! I can not in good conscience recommend this place to take care of your loved ones. Never again will I ever go here!!!. read more

This has got to be the worse place to use. Make sure you have your attorney present or on the phone when you are talking to these people. In a time of sorrow when you need the support and guidance to just get through your pain, they are very unorganized. Tyrone Pleasant was assigned to us and he could not have been more rude from the beginning. Unfortunately, our cousin passed, and he had living siblings in Texas, so we needed their signature and approval to handle everything for them since we live in LA. We found out the hard way Angelus is still on an antiquated system. Who still uses a fax machine in 2020 when everything is done with DocuSign and electronically now? Still SMH and that process took over 1-1/2 weeks. It took 2-3 try's faxing before they finally got all the documents. Tyrone refused to give us copies of the signed documents for our records and when my sister finally got them from him, he deleted our names off of any of the documentation. Now I know why they still use a fax machine, it's hard to trace like electronic documents signed through email and easy to manipulate faxed documents like he did. This is fraud at the highest level to people who just need to take care of their loved ones. After he got the signed documents, he never called us again. We were supposed to be involved in every step of the way but without our knowledge or involvement he just gave us a date for viewing with no time to give our other relatives the ability to see him. Once we got there for the viewing this fellow named DJ asked who we were. When we asked who set this up he had no answers for us and said we need to speak to the director. My grandmother's service was really beautiful. Ms. Ethel was very accommodating and kind. Rick was also very kind, and an older woman (who's name escapes me) who worked the front desk was also helpful and polite. However, there were others who really made laying my grandmother to rest quite difficult. It seemed often that some employees were being short with me despite my attempts to be nice and polite as possible. Or if I said something that they didn't understand, they would just stare at me rather than ask appropriate clarification questions. I'm young and expressed my lack of understanding on the funeral process. I asked numerous times what the next steps were and what was needed to move forward. And honestly I never received a straight answer until it was time to pay the bill just a couple days before my grandmother's service. The packet they provided had information that would have been so helpful if I had received it in the beginning of the funeral planning process. I would have known that they needed our insurance policy earlier. I would have had a detailed account of all services and what my family and I needed to do rather than rely on info lost in poor verbal communication. I was simply disappointed during an already a stressful time. The service was beautiful and they dressed my grandmother nicely. However, as good as they are with business involving the dead, they need to get better with their business involving the living. read more

This place is only for themselves and not the grieving family. I was told that we couldn't get a family car because we would not be 6ft apart. Then I was given a date for the viewing and they were holding a service there and there was no parking or room for a viewing that I paid $300.00 for...TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR AND UNPROFESSIONAL...then I was told that they can take the flowers to the cemetery for $175.00. I asked him why you can't put flowers in with the casket and I was told it's a fee, so I told him no thank you and I had my cousins pick the flowers up and put them in their trucks and transported them to my daughters resting place. I can go on an on but I'm getting upset talking about these money hungry unprofessional asswipes...AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU CAN... I only went there because my daughter had told me that this was where she wanted to be. I wouldn't let those people bury my dog...and I would NEVER RECOMMEND THESE RIPOFF ARTIST TO ANYONE!!! I have attended several services at Angelus Funeral Home. They were handled with great care and professionalism. The staff I encountered, (Constance, Edna and James) treats every body like family... (pun intended). You can feel the love as soon as you walk onto the premises. It is in my opinion the best Funeral Home in Los Angeles.
