Amazing Eats on a road trip heading to UT-Austin from California. On a crazy 25+ hour trip and needed a hearty delicious meal to fuel up; thus, we gambled on Angry Cactus and were beyond delighted Food: Our appetizer choice was the unlimited chips and salsa. Chips were fresh, warm and had cracked pepper on top with a choice of red & green salsa. The red salsa had a tasty roasted flavor and tomato freshness. The green salsa was a creamy avocado jalapeño. Both were up to my homemade salsa standards and the red salsa tasted like home. One thing about chips & salsa is too much salt masks the fresh flavors BUT this was not an issue at all. Seared Atlantic Salmon was evenly cooked and juicy throughout the fillet. No hints of fishiness either! The sweet potato hash was a powerful duo with the salmon and pico de gallo. The pico de gallo had black beans which were all fresh ingredients. I never had the trifecta cuisine arrangement and it was a memorable experience for my tastebuds. No need for lemon wedges because the acidity from the pico de gallo had lemon and the poblano chimi churri had notes of lemon too. "This Ain't Your Grandma's Meatloaf" was smoked to perfection (perhaps with cherrywood) and not baked in granny's vintage oven. It was defiantly a 2023 version of meatloaf and I am not mad about it. Juicy and flavorsome Drink: Arnold Palmer was made with Minute Maid lemonade nothing special with in house lemonade. But due to Texas dehydration, we should be drinking water anyways (chugged 4 cups lol) Environment: I loved our seating space next to the blue lite tree. The decor with the angry cactus was spunky and fun ambience for a "bar" restaurant but keeping it classy. The restrooms were huge and lived up to the "bigger in Texas" motto. Friendly place for all groups of people Service: The hosts were warm, kind and epitomized hospitality. The restaurant is located in the downtown area of San Angelo. Parking was an issue since it's all street access and Thursday nights are typical the busiest in the downtown area. The restaurant looked very clean with TV screens surrounding the tables. The food selection was decent and good variety. Service was good throughout the night. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and if you look at the pictures, it is not 1 steak piece but 3 smaller individual sizings. The crust stays on the steak but the covering was a bit too much, finding the steak was difficult. The meat wasn't super tender or flavorful. WOW! First off, this was hands down the BEST steak I've ever had! We sat at the bar and the service was friendly, talkative and amazing! I always love when they refill my drinks without hesitation. My husband and I both were asked multiple times if we wanted more drinks. We got the skillet nachos as an appetizer and they were super yummy! Nice and crispy with all the good toppings. It's such a cool place with tons of low lights and a metallic country feel. There's easy parking all around, right downtown in San Angelo. The angry cactus outside makes it come across as a silly bar scene, but it was pretty fancy! Only reason I gave four stars instead of five was they had this amazing snoop dog cook book for $40 but the book is worth $25... that I felt was not cool. We ordered the bacon and shrimp..delish! We wanted more but pressed for time. We got chips and salsa (2 salsas). Our waitress/bartender was not attentive and didn't check on us if we wanted more drinks, didn't get us utensils nor plates. She was busy with other patrons (long black hair with glasses). Was my first visit at this location. Decide to try it out cuz some of the reviews appeared to recommend this place. I ordered as a starter the pork tostadas. Which came with 3 tostadas and shredded pork. Which by the way tasted like carnitas (Mexican dish)Very flavorful. When I took a bite of the tostada the tortilla was stale. Quick background-I do have experience cooking. Plus I was raised by cooks. So I know how stale tortillas get quickly if not stored properly. When the waitress came around and asked me - if everything was okay? Of course I told her. She said she would be right back. Notified the manager. He stopped by my table. Asked me if there was an issue. I informed of the issue. Plus a took only one bite of the tortilla just to make sure of the consistency. He offered to get me a fresh plate. I refused and thanked him for the offer. He did not charge me for the starters. I appreciated it. I believe in constructive criticism. We can all improve in some way and take pride in your work. Then after that my main course arrived. The presentation was beautiful on the dish. It was the Angry Chicken plate. The chicken was juicy and placed on a bed of smashed sweet potato . Had one carrot placed on the side. Plus garnished with a salsa and other condiments. But I had noticed that the server was not visiting me frequently like she initially had. We found Angry Cactus because our GPS rerouted us on our way to San Angelo State Park. This was our gain. The entire Angry Cactus experience was INCREDIBLE. The food was crazy good. We shared West Texas Tacos with Blackened Catfish. My partner had the Mushroom Swiss Burger. I thoroughly enjoyed the Angry Vegan (I am not vegan-it just sounded interesting). The service was fast, courteous and went out of their way to make out of towners feel welcome. The establishment is clean (including the restrooms) and the decor is beautifully interesting. What a great experience! We went on a Tuesday evening about 5pm and were immediately seated (party of 2). The decor is eclectic and funky. To start off our server was super attentive, kept our glasses full and dirty plates cleared off the table. We received the complimentary bread and seasoned oil and it was delicious. We started with the bacon wrapped quail. It was my first time trying quail and super good! It comes with 6 pieces, bbq sauce and a sweet potato puree in the middle. For a main we shared the "this ain't your grandma's meatloaf" and so glad we did because it was a huge portion! We even took leftovers. It comes with green beans, a few carrots and mashed potatoes. It was SO good. The accompanying sauce was a little spicy and just overall delicious 10/10. For dessert we let the server choose between the chocolate lava cake or the prickly pear cheesecake (because we couldn't decide!!). We ended with the cheesecake which was a 10/10! What a gem in San Angelo! I was visiting on business and asked for a food rec and everybody suggested Angry Cactus. The ckn fried ckn was gorgeous and tasted as good as its presentation. It was a modest portion so if you have a big appetite, this may not be your dish. The coconut ckn salad was less impressive for my taste buds. We typically aren't burger people but that was the mood and we went with it- we decided on chips and queso, cocktails and their signature Angry Cactus burger. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, they were training new waitresses and did not miss a beat. Food was hot and fresh, quality ingredients. I ordered a Chicken Fried Chicken dinner and was blown away by the portion size. It included 3 chicken breasts perfectly chicken fried , mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. The chicken breast breading was crispy, flavorful and the chicken breasts were still moist. This meal fed both my Mom and I, and we still took home a chicken breast. (That chicken reheated well too). My mom ordered the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp which included 5 jumbo shrimp that were fresh, smoky, and flavorful. Happy hour drinks, great service, nice bar, impressive kitchen staff that put out high quality food in a very timely manner. We were impressed with appeal of other dishes we saw being taken out. Also, the artsy, eclectic inside is mesmerizing from a large blue tree in the middle of the restaurant, to windmill fan blade fans, to a large water feature in the middle of the space. I'm sad to give this restaurant this review right now because I loved it so much but I have a rule that once I get sick from a spot I have to cut it off completely for obvious reasons. I've been here a few times before but we drove into town from Abilene to take our in laws here yesterday. I ordered the beef tacos that I ordered here once before and they were amazing, but this time as soon as I took that first bite the meat aftertaste was off and not right. They weren't as good as last time and something felt wrong. The waitress was super kind and sweet though so I didn't want to be that person who sends the food back and complains. I kept eating, thinking maybe it's just me but no the flavor was off. I added more lemon and pushed through it but I regretted it all night and up until now. I couldn't sleep all night I had the worst cramps and stomach pains I considered having my husband drive me to the er it hurts so bad. We have a 10 month old baby who was already asleep and it was late so I didn't want to get everyone in the car and go. I also can't see well at night so me driving alone wasn't an option. I layed in bed all night curled up in so much pain. This morning my stomach is so swollen and hard I look pregnant. They definitely fed me some old rotten meat in those tacos. They over cooked them to mask the flavor and maybe kill bacteria but it still messed me up terribly. Our tab came out to almost $200 which I was happy to pay because everyone ate and had a new experience but I definitely got the short end of the stick. It makes me sad that even as a paying customer of almost $200 the restaurant did me dirty like that. I feel terribly sick and am about to head to a medical clinic to make sure I'm ok. The food at Angry Cactus has always been too notch and this time was no exception. Our server was attentive and checked back on us often to make sure we were doing well.
