I will tell you right now, I was not expecting to give this place 5 stars. I ate Thanksgiving lunch here probably... 20 years ago when I lived in San Angelo. We were recently in town visiting family and wanted to eat before we left town to go home. The well-known place we used to eat now closes on Sundays. That's their loss because we've declared the Dun Bar our new Sunday lunch spot when we're in town. Thelma was our server and she was just delightful. This is probably the most hole in the wall place I've ever given full stars. Don't get me wrong, I love a hole in the wall, but sometimes the food in a hole in the wall is a little boring. Like this food, it was so simple, chicken fried steaks, grilled chicken breast, a Thanksgiving lunch on Sundays, side salads, humble sides... but it's all so absolutely ridiculously GOOD. We started with the large plate of onion rings (which is $7.50, btw, you won't find that anywhere else) and my sister lost her mind about them. lol For our entrees we had two chicken fried steak plates (different sides) and a grilled chicken plate. The gravy is served on the side, family style, and it was probably one of the best gravys I've ever had. It's not just flour and water, it tasted more complex like it had broth in it as well. Somehow with the modest price of these very flavorful dishes, they still give you free dessert. Very generous. I typically hate carrot cake, but this cake was moist and really good. It was almost like a spice cake, very well done. Do not sleep on this place. The surroundings are run down, the motel behind it has seen better days, but the food is legit and the kindness can't be beat. If you go on a Sunday, ask for Thelma and tell her the girls from Fort Worth say hi. read more

I had totally forgotten about this place! I was here in San Angelo for work about 14 years ago and ate here. Food is really good. You can tell it's made from scratch and they sure give you a lot to eat. Service staff are very attentive. It's fun to watch the regulars come in. "DUN BAR for DINNER" Went to Dun Bar Motel & Restaurant last night for dinner. It's Sunday, and they advertise their Turkey Dinner as the Special of the Day. They also have a full menu, but this special sounds good. My wife and I arrived around 5pm and not many here. Sat in a booth and our server, ---, came over with some menus. My wife decided on the Chef's Salad with Italian Dressing, and I'm going with their Turkey Dinner. They don't list the ingredients of the Chef's Salad, but they do for the Turkey Dinner. Unfortunately, it's not on the website. You know what's in a Chef's Salad, and the Turkey Dinner is what you normally have on Thanksgiving. At Dun Bar, it doesn't take long to have your order served. In just a couple of minutes, it's on your table. My Wife's Chef's Salad is served in a huge bowl with a lot of wedged tomatoes covering everything. My Turkey Dinner is one big pile of turkey dinner stuff. Container of Cranberries (looks more like cranberry paste). This was pretty good. Green Beans, nice flavor, and a lot. Scoop of Mashed Potatoes, didn't think much of this, and I love mashed potatoes. A large pile of Dressing atop some shredded turkey, and not much shredded turkey, with no flavor. Expected sliced turkey. Gravy was atop the dressing with very little flavor. Loved the sweet taste of the Fruit Salad. Best part of the whole dinner. We were asked if we wanted a basket of rolls, and we said no. My wife said her Chef's Salad was okay. I agree, I ate a lot of this and it was okay. There is enough in this bowl to serve two people with leftovers. You get a lot of food here, but in my case, it was tasteless, bland, and very disappointing in the quality and amount of food. The Turkey Dinner Special also comes with dessert. This was Chocolate Walnut Cake, and it was chocolaty, creamyliciousness. The last time we were here was some time back, and I had the Fried Chicken. My wife had the same then as now, the Chef's Salad, and it looked the same then as it did this time - a lot. The Fried Chicken was really good. This is not the Dunbar East that it once was. The old Dunbar set the standard for country fried steaks and steak fingers for a generation. Ive been there since the 70's and also as late as this year. The building is the same but that Dunbar seems to be gone. The plate is now what you would expect from a two star local diner. The steak was mundane at best and the plate was not appealing. Helpful suggestion for the restaurant: use a better cut of beef, it doesn't hurt to marinate it and season the batter a bit. Cook it in oil hot enough to get the batter crispy, and don't overcook it. Serve with Texas toast and a choice of French fries or baked potato. Not potato salad, corn and beans. Kind of like the old one did. People liked that stuff why change it? read more

The food was so good. The Brussels sprouts were so tender. The pinto beans perfectly seasoned. The garden salad was so fresh and crisp, no dressing was necessary to make it payable. The coffee is the best in town, always fresh and no bitterness. The water tastes clean and pure. My meat portion, huge, more tha enough for lunch and dinner combined. Service also very excellent. Tried this place on a recommendation of a local business owner. Was pretty disappointing. Service was good, but that was the only thing good. Ordered the smothered steak, what I got was a chunk of barely warm really dry hamburger that had hot gravy poured on it. Almost like getting a barely reheated leftover. The vegetable sides were ok, the bread rolls weren't anything to write home about. Popped in for lunch on a Thursday about 11:00am. It is seat yourself, which I like very much, and the waitress was right there with the menu. I ordered the Lunch special of Chicken Fried Steak, mashed taters and peas, yeast rolls and a desert. The cream gravy is served separately in a large bowl and is enough for 2. They come with hash browns and toast. My egg was cooked perfectly (I asked for it hard, and it was). The sausage was oddly underseasoned -- I don't know that I've ever noted that before. Hash browns were meh. Toast was meh. No preserves or jelly provided. I'm surprised they don't offer biscuits. I enjoy the charm of old-time restaurants. The coffee was good, and so was the service. Whelp, a local recommended I check this spot and I'm questioning him, in my head. So, lets get into it... Quaint exterior and hometown, no frills, interior and dated. Often, I feel this sets the mood for some good southern (or Texas) cuisine. Not so much the case here. I ordered the pork chop dinner (cooked light by request; other helpers posted dry-looking chops). They were perfectly juicy, with great flavor. As for the sides, there is an extremely and unimpressive options. Think: take it or leave it from dinner with the parents. Having lived in Germany, a few years, I love German fried potatoes. They're a huge miss, here! More scorched & chunky mashed potatoes w/ large chopped onions. The green beans are the cheap rubber style and lacking flavor. The dinner roles also unimpressive. And what restaurant in the South does not have sweet tea??? This one does not! My waitress was sweet and helpful. Even taking time to explain the menu options, once I shared I'd never been. The hostess graciously offered to get me another order, but no! Would I want to risk having the same thing happen again? My money was refunded. When we first started eating here and getting to go, the food quality was excellent. Sadly over the past 4 years that has really gone downhill. We would always get food to go at Thanksgiving and Christmas. No more. The food quality was no better than a microwave meal so why pay all that $$ and stand in line for a long time to wind up feeding it to the dogs or putting out for the stray cats. This past Thanksgiving, I was charged $70+ for 3 plates. I didn't say anything because of the lines and who's going to say something on a Holiday like Thanksgiving. The food we had was good yes, no doubt. The device is good, prices decent. The menu for breakfast is not big in my opinion but it does have the basic staples. Portions are pretty good also but nothing special. The grilled chops I got were well seasoned and not fatty. Hash browns were nice a crispy as I like them. Can't swap out toast for anything else but biscuits which kinda sucks if flour is what your avoiding. I did not try the house gravy that comes with every entree so can't speak on that. My fiance'got the pancakes and they looked good, smelled good and we're pretty big also. She loved the bacon and her eggs as well, super fresh tasting she said. For a busy veterans days morning about 930 am they were busy but nothing crazy either. Kept up well. No military discounts are offered here. They do take cards or cash here now as well. Little discouraged right now this past Saturday I was invited out to breakfast with my aunt Joan Watkins to a place others in my family have eaten at for years. I placed my walker by the steel beam next to me and we're both in the middle of our meals. A waitress mind you not our own came up and her words "Next time put the walker at the front, we're all having to go around to get to the other customers." My aunt moved it and then that same waitress came back though to get to those customer's in the booth section. She went behind my aunt on the right side of the beam pushing the chair at the empty table to make room for herself to get though. Now that i tried their food, i can say they dont use any seasonings on their food whatsoever. This place is a diner going back to the road trips my mom, dad and me used to take in the mid-70s. total Americana. John Wayne and pictures of horses and a sheep on the wall . comfy red vinyl booths. I told my husband I just want a comfortable place to sit and have good food. this is the place. no frills, straight forward home style cooking. my husband ordered a steak and this was a huge steak! cooked to his order with fries on the side. I ordered the chicken fried steak with onion rings. the salad dressings were homemade, not out of a bottle that came with dinner. Homemade rolls, they were so soft and delicious.I love onion rings and these were really good. the couple in the next booth ordered the large onion rings and it was enormous. relaxing environment. you could tell the people who were eating dinner knew this place. My home-cooked meals daily. The meals are what your grandmother or mother would cook at home. The service when I go is fast, friendly, and can hold a good conversation. The rolls are the best in town. Add a little honey, and you're in heaven. Hamburgers are fat and juicy. The daily meals with dessert want you to take your afternoon nap. You order a pancake, better have an empty stomach, cause your going to need all that space. Steaks are cooked to your liking. Just go and try them out. Dun Bar East caters to the senior crowd and the food is prepared that way. I had the southern fried chicken dinner and when it arrived it looked great. Chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, biscuits and a fruit salad. Everything is homemade but they need to use some seasoning, any seasoning, salt, pepper something. With the exception of the mashed potatoes everything was tasteless. The fried chicken had no flavor other than grease. The fruit salad was old, mushy and other than the grapes you didn't know what you were eating. I'm sure glad we didn't spend the big bucks for any of their steaks because I'll bet they'd screw them up as well. The best breakfast I can ever remember!! I consider myself a breakfast snob. I like my hash browns, bacon and toast crispy, not burnt but just right. We happened upon this place because I was determined to find a 'small town' cafe for breakfast on a holiday. This little gem made my out and back 7 hour trip worth every mile. I started with the coffee, that says a lot about a place. Then ordered eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast while my daughter ordered the pancakes and sausage with apple juice. Like I said, it was perfectly prepared, cooked and presented. My daughter was so full after the two huge pancakes that she almost didn't get to her sausage but once she tasted it she couldn't resist and had to finish it. She says it was the best sausage ever! The staff was friendly and they had that 'sense of urgency' that made the friendly, prompt service bring the level of the experience to a whole new level. People knew each other and the staff knew them but even us being outsiders didn't stop them from treating us the same way. I got the bill and was shocked, I really thought they hadn't charged us correctly, it wasn't enough. Hard to believe all that for so little. I left a tip the size of the bill and if I could have left more I would. It was that great!! I do look at reviews when I choose a place and the lady who mentioned that it equivalent to IHOP has totally done this restaurant a disservice. I have been to IHOP more then my fair share, I was a 'regular' at one time in my home town. As long as you know what to expect, you won't be disappointed. It is attached to an old-looking motel and this is 100% old small town diner-- framed photos of John Wayne on the wall and all. Our server wasn't too friendly but the food was way better than I expected. Super fluffy pancakes, good bacon (not very thick but pretty tasty), yummy hashbrowns. Also quite affordable. We came for breakfast. The decor is very "home style" with a 1970's/80's vibe. We were initially hesitant not knowing what to expect. Service: very friendly, thought conscious staff. I ordered a Spanish omelette and the waitress thoughtfully warned me that "it's only egg". She then recommended a western omelette that was OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS. Very quick and personable. They brought every table an entire pitcher of tea. This place has been doing business for a while and they know what makes sense. No waiting for refills here! Also, my coffee cup never made it to less than half empty. Our waitress was on her A game. Food: Generous portions. Incredibly tasty. Don't go if on diet. Price: Total came to $17 + tip for breakfast for two. Great price! Bottom line: This place may be an eye soar but its definitely worth your time. Tried this place for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and like a lot of places in and around San Angelo, Dun Bar represents the 'diner chic' that Austin hipsters try oh so hard to replicate. Dun Bar is definitely the real deal. Was really tempted to get a steak but ended up going with the chicken fried while my wife got a burger. Wasn't the best I've ever had but for the money it was more than satisfying. If I recall, our meals, a couple of beers, and the small salads that accompanied them was around $20. Big stand outs - the dinner rolls are delicious and they give you an entire bottle of salad dressing to pour as you see fit. read more
