Animal Adventures in Bolton, MA is truly a hidden gem and an amazing rescue doing wonderful work for animals in need. Every animal there is clearly well cared for, loved, and given a safe second chance. We had the opportunity to meet so many amazing creatures...reptiles, birds, mammals, and even some more exotic residents! The highlight of mine and my fiancé's visit was the otter encounter, and it was unforgettable! Our tour guide, Marshall, was fantastic; knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the animals. He made the entire experience fun and educational, and his care for the animals really showed. Interacting with the otters up close was something we'll never forget. before the owner says i have the wrong place, i 100% dont. I was there a few weeks ago in hopes of supporting a smaller business that I was hoping was what It claimed to be, it wasn't at all. the kangaroos have a pathetic sign infront claming "we are happy!!" well it's apparent they are not?? so that's a very lame excuse. I have 3 guinea pigs and was HORRIFIED about both enclosures for them, somehow they made petco look good. which we all know isn't. If this owner really does have any knowledge is zoology then i guess I can be an astronaut because I watched a space movie and enjoy looking at stars. this isn't a rescue, this is a hell. We weren't there when the monkey was out but seeing the tiny shed looking environment for it was saddening. they had gators piled in a pond with another sign claiming it was okay. they had giant snakes that couldn't even stretch or move. they had exotic pets with terrible enclosures. I feel bad for the workers that can't fix it because of this stubborn and quite clearly rude owner. So before the owner drops a hate comment on my insanely honest review, how about you put that net worth to use . It's always cool to see animals up close to have a better view but for what expense? That you're supporting exotic animal abuse, can taste their feces in the air in the entire place, and looking at them distressed in a cage 2x their body length. You cannot witness these animals in a fun active manner, they are crammed in tiny cages in survival mode, mostly are freaked out. The biggest ones that hit me was about 12 lemers crammed in a tiny cage all together. Then a tiny monkey was clearly loosing his mind, screaming at us, very frantic, in a cage a size small enough for a parakeet. (Good thing he was behind glass for our safety :-( ) This is not a place ppl drop of their pets (very FEW have) and these animals are not turned over to this place by zoo's that will not take these animals. This is mostly black market purchases that have gotten out of control. No one that loved an animal/pet would bring it here to slowly rot in this place. This is not a sanctuary- it's hell for these poor animals. This place is someone's house, with small added sheds around the yard and 3/4 tiny outdoor enclosures turned into a major hoarding zoo with the smallest of cages, stacked on top and next to each other. Putting these animals in dyer situations. When will these ppl stop buying animals? They have NO room. Surely, there has to be laws especially for the exotic animals crammed up crying for someone/something to save them. I'm not one to leave 1 star reviews on independent businesses because I'm of the opinion "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all" re: Yelp, especially as a retail worker who knows how entitled and petty customers can be, but when it comes to animal welfare, there are standards that must be met and I unfortunately do not get the impression that this facility meets those expectations. I will not pretend to be an expert, I don't have a formal education in zoology however I am someone who spends a lot of free time researching animals, hence my interest in visiting this place to see some cool species. I was very disappointed with many of the enclosures; while some appeared adequate, most were questionable. There were kangaroos in a tiny room indoors. Gators sharing a small pond. One topic I can claim to know about is hedgehog and ferret welfare, as I have owned both in my life, and I was very alarmed to notice that the ferrets had a wheel while the hedgehog did not. Ferrets cannot use a wheel as it will harm their spine. Hedgehogs NEED a wheel, it's an absolute non-negotiable, as they naturally run for miles every single night. My hedgehog picks her wheel over various toys and other enrichment, not to mention her habitat is 4x2, the minimum, which this facility did not meet (it was like a 5 gallon tank). It made me very sad to see the very large looking hedgehog balled up in its hide in a barren, tiny tank. There were also numerous reptiles crammed into tiny enclosures including with mixed species. Seeing the massive snakes in an empty breeder tank was very demoralizing. There was a porcupine clearly stressed in a tiny pen with newspaper. There are priorities that could feasibly be rearranged to improve the lives of these animals but it seems like providing lots of parking to secure max ticket sales is where the owner has decided to invest. Kids are also allowed to run rampant around even anxious animals like rabbits that are easily stressed. I'm mad at myself for coming here, the impression on Yelp is a lot prettier than the reality in person, but there are still some red flags that seem obvious now. Spend your money elsewhere. I came here for my birthday specifically for the Capybara encounter. I saw a video of Hazel online and I had to meet her. Paige took us to meet Hazel and she was friendly and knowledgeable. Then we did a "pick 6" tour. I originally wanted to see the wallaby, but our tour guide Benji recommended something else. I'm so glad he did because I got to meet Splinter the South American paca and he is SO cute!!! Benji also took us to see foxes, armadillos, kangaroo, and the kinkajou. He was also friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend this place to anyone. You can tell they care about your safety as well as the animals. read more

My partner and I participated in a ten-minute capybara encounter. This was $85 a person--such a ripoff. We felt so ripped off and immediately realized that a business that will rip off their customers, will also not take care of their animals. The capybara is definitely the "VIP" of the place. She has a relatively nice outdoor cage but she is given very little interaction with anyone outside of the encounters. Capybaras are very social, community oriented animals so this was tough to see. But the capybara encounter was by far the most humane part of the entire visit... I have never cried so hard at a "rescue farm." I have no doubt that the animals are suffering every day. The animals are living in such horrible conditions. Yes, they are fed and given water but that is it. The animals are provided with the absolute bare minimum needed for survival. I witnessed a worker bringing a kangaroo to a group of visitors. I will never forget the image that I saw of the horrified kangaroo. Furthermore, I saw the kangaroo's cage--there's no room for the kangaroo to move, let alone hop around. I witnessed the goats and cow...they are trapped in a very small pen and can't move around without falling into their own fecal matter. The indoor area smelled horribly. Many of the cages were dirty and most animals do not have enough space to move. I would not suggest going to this place because of the obvious suffering of the animals. If you would like to visit a sanctuary farm, I would highly suggest Unity Farm or Winslow Farm. *Since I can't respond to the owner's comment in any place accept for here, I want to indeed say that this a 100% legit review. I like to take my daughter to the zoo but wanted to see if we could find something different. Came across Animal Adventures which had goats and exotic animals and bunny petting area. Was about 45 minute drive wasn't bad. Parking I got lucky to get main area parking spot. Admission was $16 and free for kid under 2. We bought $1 ice cream cone and food to feed goats. Was nice but one of goats rammed my daughter hand in fence. But she was totally fine. Wish there was some signs to show caution for people with little ones. We walked around the there were spots that had some wires out and places little ones could fall so be sure keep good eye on your little ones! The bunny petting area was nice. The steps to get in weren't very secure I wish they wouldve secured those alittle more! All and all the animals looked very well cared for! Smaller, more interesting and more personal than any zoo we've visited, Animal Adventures is all about getting really close to a variety of interesting and sometimes exotic animals. Would you like to pet a porcupine, feed an alligator or walk with a tortoise? Then this is your place. They offer general admission starting at $15 which is self guided and includes animal shows, or a variety of private guided tours, where you get to go into the cages and interact with the animals. We selected their 90 minute tour, which provided us with a personally guided tour with a zookeeper assigned to our group of six, and included hands-on introductions to a variety of their animals. Some of their animals include owls, kangaroos, porcupines, foxes, alligators, snakes, armadillos, skunks, wallaby, emu, and more. These can change as Animal Adventures is actually a rescue providing "homes to unwanted and unable to be cared for animals, while educating the public about these animals." We had a great time and spent a couple of hours here, petting a boa constrictor, porcupine (better pet them in the correct direction!), tortoises, emu, goats, lizards, bunnies and more. This place was disappointing and the enclosures are too small for most of the animals. The conditions were terrible. All the glass aquariums were cloudy and dirty. It smelled of urine- as if the enclosures were not cleaned often. We noticed a very sick naked young rabbit hobbling around. It had been rainy the day before and all the outdoor enclosures were mud - they should have shelters or roofs to keep areas dry. Some animals did not have any water - even after the rain. It was very sad to see and I left feeling awful about the animals. I would definitely not come here again. If you like animals this place, it will be sad and disappointing. Skip it. Well, my first experience with this place it was very rundown very cluttered with work equipment often you can shovel wheel barrels and buckets all over the place. We had a capybara experience here at the Zoo. Christian, the capybara handler was excellent and had a lot of info on the species. I worry for the animals. The cages aren't big enough and the animals need to have more enrichment. In the reptile room there was a python in a display that was barely large enough for the snake and it was stacked underneath several other cages. The snake was not able to stretch out if it wanted to. Animals need room to move around. They have a bunny enclosure that they let kids run around in. I saw a new bunny get dropped off, shaking, and placed into the pen. The male bunnies immediately tried to mate with her. I brought it to the attention to a staff member who walked over to a guy trimming branches. He was not interested in helping out. I have seen the owner's responses to several reviews. Instead of acknowledging that animals need enrichment and room to move and forage, he is defensive and states something to the effect of 'animals don't care' about cages with fancy things. It's appalling to me that someone who is responsible for animals would say such a thing. Edited to add: This is a for-profit organization. You can find their website at zoo.church. The owner claims to have a PhD, but never identifies the university. He claims to be a leading crocodile biologist, but no evidence of this can be found online. I'm a little on the fence with this place. When we first pulled up my kids wanted to leave. First impressions definitely weren't the best. The zoo is spread across several buildings and outdoor exhibits. On one hand, there were a ton of opportunities to get up close to various animals. I didn't pay for the guided tour but we ended up having a couple of staff members showing us around and it was almost like a personal tour. My kids loved hearing about the animals and being able to touch so many different ones. The animals were clearly loved and the cages were very clean. When I asked where the animals came from I was told some were from zoos that couldn't care for them, or personal pets turned over. On the other hand, some of the enclosures were clearly inadequate. The large alligators in cramped conditions were the most notable. Some of the animals seemed to be lacking something, maybe mental stimulation or a companion, they need and were exhibiting odd behavior. The zoo felt more like someone's personal animal collection that got a bit out of hand. The animals are also used to travel to schools and other paid events, which could be stressful for anyone. Although my kids loved it, after their initial reaction, I wouldn't return. I generally like to support rescue zoos and the work they do but this just didn't feel that way to me. read more

This place broke my heart. The enclosures were WAY too small for the animals. Little to no enrichment was provided. Many of the animals were showing stereotypical (stress) behaviors left and right (primates, big cats, foxes), And it smelled awful... not like a normal stinky zoo... the smell actually stuck to my clothes after I left. I asked a lot of questions about the animals' care, specifically the amount of time they get outside of the enclosures. I was told that they don't like going outside. The alligator that they used for the show was so happy to be in the sun. Unfortunately, the rest of the alligators live in a tank so small, they were unable to move about freely without climbing on one another. Regarding the largest alligators, I was told that the staff didn't have time to "do the filter" yesterday, which was why it smelled so bad. I doubt that thing has been looked at in months. Literal swamp. Plus the alligators couldn't even lay in the water without being all curled up. Honestly I think they have too many animals, and unfortunately don't have the resources to care for them all in the appropriate way. BUT they are opening a new location in Hubbardston?? And trust me don't be disappointed when you pull in and it looks small, TRUST ME I felt this way and I was like damn this is going to be boring but looks are deceiving because I had a freaking blast and there's animals all over. So I met my first BFF when the baby goats came up to me, I nearly lost it they're so adorable they just run around freely, and hunt you down for the cones they sell for 1.00 full of food for the goats. When you pull in the front part of the building reminds me of a petting zoo, they had adult goats, llamas, chickens, turkeys, a cool freaking duck. This place has all types of animals and all types of sections. They have piggies, rabbits, an owl, lynx's, monkeys , a scary ass snapping turtle, a parrot , a whole reptile room with snakes and stuff NOPE not for me! Omg and they have a room with alligators and crocodiles and you can feed them! ( I took a hard pass on that). Continuing , a kookaburra, kangaroos, emus, more wild cats, tortoises everywhere and they were HUGE. Shawn was the man of the hour he was running the whole place making sure everyone was well taken care of, he made everything much more enjoyable. Educated us a whole lot and made sure we saw all the animals. Now to some cool freaking stuff, they have these animal encounters you can do ( pay extra) , I don't remember the animals on the list but we did the kangaroo, they were so soft and cute, you go inside their enclosure and spend some time with them. I really enjoyed it. More cool stuff! My mom and best friend fed the alligators ( my biggest animal fear), the way they open their mouths and snap down lord Jesus gave me anxiety. We also was able to feed some wild cats, I think we fed the lynx, that was a fun experience the cats here are beautiful and actually very gentle. The animals here are taken well care of. This place takes on animals that nobody wants and that would've been put to sleep otherwise. The workers here are very educated and I appreciate all their hard work. During the visit one gets to see a variety of animals that range from New England down to the Everglades, across the Globe to Asia. This animal shelter was a HOOT! (yeah, still using that joke) I love meeting the animals here and learning how they came to live here in this shelter. The trainer was super awesome too and demonstrated how to handle each animal before letting us try. My favorite part was watching him go into the gator cage after one of the Yelpers fed the tongs to the gator. Also, the chinchilla is the cutest, softest animals I had the pleasure of touching. A few problems I have with this place 1. is the smell, when I went inside it smelt so bad I could barely breathe, it smelt like piss and like it never gets cleaned. 2. Enclosures: The enclosures are too small and not good for the animals, some of them were trying to get out. 3. The location: This place is in the middle of nowhere on a random street that takes a little while to drive when you get off the highway. 4. We did a private tour which was amazing! Where else can you pet a kangaroo and porcupine, and hold a toucan? However, I was a little bothered by the sizes of some of the animal's exhibits. A very sad place. They have some beautiful animals but trapped in small and dirty enclosures, especially the reptiles. The Caiman were swimming in their own feces. There was hardly any information on the animal's histories other than a vervet monkey in a small enclosure that said it was rescued from show business. I'm surprised this place doesn't have higher reviews. I initially saw Animal Adventures on Groupon and decided to do some further investigating. I went on their website and ended up purchasing the Extreme Adventure Tour, which included a two-hour private tour, giving us 1-on-1 access to the exotic animals in the sanctuary. I really like that Animal Adventures provides the tours as an option because most places don't do that for such a reasonable price. This place actually isn't hard to find and there is a ton of street side parking. We made reservations for our tour for around noon, when it wasn't as packed but by the time we left around 2:30, it was packed with families and groups. I was very impressed by the variety of animals here, and liked that the tour provided us with 1-on-1 time with the animals. We got to meet the lynx, wallaby, kangaroos, alligators, boa constrictors, chinchillas, macaws, skinks, and much more! It was definitely a really cool experience. I came with my boyfriend and it was something neither of us had experienced before, so it's definitely something you could do for a cool date. The staff who gave us a tour was extremely knowledgeable about all the animals and she definitely knew how to handle them, which was nice. She was extremely thorough and gave us a few options of how we could do the tour. We also got 15 minutes to spend with any one of the animals we met during our extreme tour. We ended up spending extreme time with the porcupine. She was super cute! Final thoughts, I definitely go to this place again. I had a really great experience. read more

I was blown away by not only the diversity of animals but also the caring and interactive staff! We got to see the animals way closer than any zoo and they were happy to see us. Lynxes, foxes, a serval, a bobcat, alligators, crocodiles, pythons, kangaroos, proqupines, farm critters and so much much more. They had shows to interact with the animals and could even pet/feed them yourself. We paid general admission but because many people paid for special access they were kind enough to allow us to pet some of the animals with those people. When we walked into one of the indoor "exhibits" there were 5 people standing inside not wearing masks. They welcomed us in to check it out. I asked if they would be wearing masks and the owner replied, "No, this group isn't wearing masks". Indoors. In a small space where it is physically impossible to social distance. In a pandemic. We ended up not going in. Which also meant we didn't get to see the animal shows that were advertised with our tickets. Matt was our tour guide we did the 6 pick animal tour (not sure of exact the name of tour), Matt was filled with tons of interesting facts and useful information about each animal we encountered on the tour. Honestly I debated the star amount because I'm sure you guys are only trying to help the animals but you're way over your heads and don't have the right resources currently. The staff was very friendly and pleasant but my advice is to *please* stop taking in any more animals and *please* fix up the enclosures and expand your land. I left feeling sad and empty, the animals are not happy guys. I'm sure the intent is good but it's not enough sadly. The enclosures aren't suitable for a healthy happy life. The cats frantically pacing back in forth in their tiny enclosures is stuck in my memory. The lone bored and stressed monkey. The tortoise. The gators. The kangaroo. Goes on and on. Don't even have space to walk around. I felt like I was in someone's unhygienic home that also happened to be an extreme animal hoarder. I'd suggest closing (to the public) and working on the place when you guys have the means to do so. It could be lovely if it was fixed up. Maybe set up a fundraiser to get some money in? There's gotta be something to be done to help you guys advance the enclosures, maybe could even expand lot wise. Something. More staff is needed in the outside areas too - kids are extremely invasive and often abusive without even knowing it to animals and should be observed, I've read some horrible stories in other reviews (parents - do better). I know you mean well! but please do more for these animals if you actually love them and want them to live better than where they're rescued from. I usually leave animal sanctuaries happy (Winslow farm comes to mind) this wasn't the case here unfortunately. I left sad and feeling like I needed a shower. Almost none of the staff here wear masks. I saw four people go into the same low-ceilinged trailer at the same time, all unmasked. Many of the animals are indoors. When we momentarily got cornered with an unmasked staff member, I asked her if she wouldn't mind masking up while we were around; she flatly refused. I saw several other staff members indoors without masks as well. This is a place that doesn't believe in wearing masks to protect each other or you. ETA: you're going to see a response below that's disingenuous. There were indeed two staff members wearing masks; no one else was, though. Guy at the front desk, a bunch of people who were in and out of buildings, none were masked at any point. Social distancing is not possible indoors, which means that this place is absolutely violating Mass guidelines. This is not an "inconvenience;" it's a danger. You can hold baby alligators in your hands, give a wild fox a raw egg, discover that kangaroos actually have very furry and soft furs, you can also climb up stairs to feed some huge alligators, you get started at by some aggressive human predator crocodile; you can also pat porcupines on the chin and give them their favorite treat (apple); you can walk into a garden where turtles just have fun and walk around eating vegetables. Plus you have a wonderful guide Jonathan telling you all the back stories of all the animals you encounter. It is one of the most intimate and engaging experiences you can ever have in your life with wild animals. I"m not sure how to feel about this place. The space for the animals seemed really small as others have mentioned. On the other hand, the areas seemed clean and they seem well-cared for. The tour was good and the guide was knowledgeable. It was fun getting to touch all the animals. The variety of animals is impressive for the size of the facility. We made last minute reservations and they were able to include us. It was a very hot day, so it wasn't that busy and they did the tour in rotation so even if you join late or early, you can drop when they circle back to where you started. read more

This was one of the coolest dates my boyfriend and I went on. Animal Adventures is unlike any other animal spot I've ever been to. I got to interact with so meant animals I never thought I would ever see. As their slogan states, Animal Adventures really is more than a zoo. In so many ways, it's better. It's more authentic and it exists solely for the animals, not the profit (a lot of their animals were rescued). Every animal had its own area with a good amount of space. They were sectioned for organization, as well (some examples include a reptile room for small reptiles, farm animals had a huge fenced area outside, alligator and crocodiles were housed in a different section away from the other animals). Any animal that requires a lot of roaming room is given much time to move and groove. Every animal is well taken care of. Their areas are cleaned every single day. You're given the option of general admission, private tour or the extreme tour. My boyfriend and I did the extreme tour, and so should you. The difference between the private tour and the extreme tour is that the extreme tour is 2 hours (compared to private tour's 90 minutes), you get to see ALL the animals and we got to interact and give a snack to every one able to be interacted with. It's way more in depth and your personal tour guide answers all your questions and gives you so much information about the animals. Buying a tour means you can also stay until they close. (Note: if you want one of the tours, call/message them to reserve a spot). Once in a while, they have special classes available, as well (so check their facebook). The african porcupine, Boo, is my favorite. I was able to give her a little apple slice! There were so many animals, you are definitely getting your moneys worth with an extreme tour. If not, the General Admission ($14 I believe for adults) is really rather inexpensive for everything that you see. It's remarkable, really. Every single employee knew what they were doing. They knew every animal on a personal, intimate level. They truly cared. You're not gonna find that at a zoo. read more

ANIMAL CRUELTY / NEGLECT / ABUSE These animals need to be rescued from this place. Every animal either looks like it wishes it was dead or is desperately begging to be let out. All animal look distressed. Anyone that likes animals even a little bit will know instantly that these animals are in trouble. Very depressing to see these animals in containers barely bigger than their own bodies. They can barley move. Alligators in containers only a little bit bigger than their own bodies, sitting for years in their own filth. Large Porcupines in small containers, with no stimulation. Birds in small cages frantically squirming to be let out. Two toucans in a small cage, one of which is plucking all of the feathers out of the other while the other is whimpering. A full grown kangaroo laying on its back in sawdust, in a container the size of a small bathroom. I doubt any of these animals get time to walk outside of their tiny enclosures. Trapped for years and years. All of these containers are kept in a tight corridor that humans can barely walk through themselves. A bucket of broken glass on the floor while children and other guests are walking around it. Theres no ventilation for the stench and the heat. The building is like a tin can. I really think that any good reviews for this place are posted with fake accounts by the people that own it to make it look like people enjoy this place. It's a scam and these animals are being exploited and abused. Any animal lover or sane person will leave this place heartbroken for the animals. read more
