I visited the facility on Memorial Day. According to the website, the facility was open to view dogs from 11 to 3. However this was not the case. I was told the dogs were all closed in and I needed to request to see particular dogs inside the office. I went in the office. There was a nice very young woman there. I said I wanted to see two dogs and gave her the names. She said to me; do you live alone and do you have a dog? I said yes to both. she then said the two dogs that I identified were very frightened and if I did not take them home today or tomorrow, they're not available for viewing. I'm simply reporting this because it's ridiculous. There adoption policy should be reviewed or this young woman re educated. One can easily see how this policy would first deter people from considering a certain dog and second result in a failed placement. I adopted two dogs from this facility many years ago, this type of hard sell approach did not exist. read more

Baypath Humane Society is personally, what I believe, one of the best shelters out there. I could tell that the staff members really love the animals they take care of and do their best to match you with the perfect cat or dog. They do everything possible to make sure it works out and that the animal finds the best forever home. I also loved how the staff members did not hide any of the medical history of the animal from you. They are completely honest and make sure you are committed / are willing or can afford the type of treatment the animal needs. 10 out of 10 recommend going to Baypath to adopt your next fur baby. The dog I was matched with is the sweetest girl and I love her to pieces. She was just what I was looking for and more. I may have never adopted the dog I adopted if Katie didn't lead me to Mila. These are the sweetest folks who really put the pets first and want to make the best matches they can. They have a handful of requirements with the application, including references and an interview about behavioral expectations, but its in the best interest of the pets making sure new owners understand the responsibilities associated with adoption. They asked me about how I would discipline a misbehaving cat if I adopted one, then gave me lots of advice on the best ways to deal with any hiccups and what to expect for transitions. I've adopted two cats through them and they were amazing resources on how to get them feeling comfortable in my home and even followed up to make sure everything was going smoothly. I recommend making a visit and seeing the operation. It may take a few visits to find the perfect fit for you and your family, but its so so worth it. read more

We are very thankful for the experience we had here. A few months after losing our 16 year old boy Murphy to kidney issues we were ready for some kitty love in our home again. We had a specific cat in mind that we saw on their website and he was actually being adopted when we arrived. With a love for orange kitties they did their best to introduce us to each of the cats they had. From there we met Sheba (now Louise) and fell in love. She definitely had a rough life before coming to the shelter some trust issues. Since the adoption in March she has settled in with all of her favorite toys, cozy spots in our home and humans to snuggle with. Thank you so much for bringing her into our lives! read more

My boyfriend recently adopted his dog from here, and they are amazing :-) Boyfriend has wanted a dog for a while, and he said that right after he bought a house, one of the first things he would do is get a canine companion, and that's exactly what he did. He also knew what kind of dog he wanted and stalked Petfinder and other sites for weeks on end to see if they had any dogs that he'd be interested in. And then we met Alfred. Alfred originally came back in a Petfinder search and we saw that he was located at Baypath. The staff came in one morning and found poor Alfred tied to the front door :-( He is a young all-white Boxer. Since they knew nothing about him, they brought him into the shelter, took care of him, sent him to the vet to get his exam and all his updated shots, neutered him, and then put him up on their website in hopes of finding him his forever home. My boyfriend read his profile on Baypath's webpage and fell in love right away. We drove out to Baypath a few days later and met him in person. He is the sweetest, most gentle and loving dog I've ever met. From the second they brought him out to see us (they had to keep him separate from the other dogs because he caught a mild case of kennel cough), he was licking our faces and enjoying his belly rubs. My boyfriend filled out an adoption application, and the whole time, Alfred was by his side. Staff members would walk by him and pet him and coo at him, and you can clearly tell that Alfred loved them very much. They told us as much as they could about Alfred, updated us on his health, and made plans for my boyfriend to pick him up the following week. We were there on a Sunday, and the place was *insanely* busy. In addition to all the animals barking and playing with potential parents, there was a line of people waiting to fill out adoption applications, nice people coming by to drop off blankets, food, cupcakes, etc. The staff there was very patient and extremely helpful. You can tell by their interactions how much they loved the animals and how well they treated them. They took time with each client and didn't try to rush anyone. For anyone visiting the center, you can take any of the dogs there out for a walk (they're located in a very woodsy area with no neighbors, so it's a great spot for walking), or you can visit their cat room, which is essentially just that. It seems like they have a very quick turnaround for adopting, so if you see an animal on the website that you really like, you should stop by and see the animal ASAP! My absolute *favorite* thing about this shelter is that they're a NO-KILL shelter. That means that they try to find each and every single animal there a "forever" home. They feed their animals well, take care of them, walk the dogs, give them treats, etc. Most of the workers there are volunteers, and you can genuinely see the person/animal bonding going on in there. Truly touching, even if you're not an animal-lover like me. Long story short -- he ended up adopting Alfred and it has been a few weeks already. Alfred has adjusted amazingly well. We can already tell that he used to have an owner because he is housebroken and knows a few commands, like "sit" and "paw" and "down." He is incredibly intelligent and gentle for such a large dog and did I mention SWEET?? We love him so much and are incredibly grateful to the staff at Baypath for having taken him in and taking such wonderful care of him. Thank you! :-) read more

I lost my yellow lab last December and I finally felt that it was time to go in search of a new best friend. Since my last dog was a rescue, I wanted to adopt another from a local shelter. I found a 1yr old lab mix at Baypath who looked like he would be a good fit. They told me he'd been at the shelter for about a month and had been overlooked by others because he had some fear issues and he jumped. My family came along with me and the dog got along fine with everyone and our current elderly female dog. We decided to take the dog home with us for a two week trial. The first day I had him he jumped up and bit a jogger who was passing us on our walk. The bite wasn't bad and luckily the jogger was nice about it and she chose not to press charges. She also admitted that she shouldn't have gotten so close to us because he was a strange dog. The dog was placed under a 10 day quarantine by animal control and it was just lifted today. Over the next week and a half the dog became steadily more hyper and unmanageable. We'd go on long walks/runs (avoiding everyone per order of the quarantine) and play ball in the backyard. Instead of getting tired, he'd get wound up like a top. He began pouncing on our elderly dog and it was driving her insane. We also discovered that the dog had a strong dislike of small children and he became aggressive when any guests came into the house. He tried biting several family members even after he let them pet him and they'd fed him treats. I felt bad, but I took him back to the shelter today. The staff was very nice and understanding. I was told by one of the workers that the dog was "one of our more aggressive dogs." I just wish that they'd told me that before I had brought him home! Despite all of this, I think Baypath is a great shelter and they really care about their animals. I know several other families that have adopted pets from the shelter and they are wonderful, loving animals. This particular dog just wasn't the right fit for my family and needs someone who can try and help him overcome his issues. @David - You are a real jerk and I can't believe that you'd abandon your pet of 15 years to die on a "dog farm." No wonder Baypath was angry with you when you called! read more

What this incredibly devoted staff (&, by planning oversight) Board of Trustees achieves for animals EVERY DAY is nothing less than astonishing to me. A phenomenal organization working with extremely limited resources. As a volunteer, business person & foster parent, I see a clear agenda here: what is the best course for our dogs, cats & community today; what do they need; what do we need to do to support our foster animals & families; how can we bring our charges to safe "forever homes." Moreover, the pros here are constantly managing interactions with potential fosters & adopters, veterinarians and multiple other sources and respondents. We adopted our newest house member during Covid. It's absolutely not a small feat that they made the process as clear as possible while still ensuring the cat was going to go to a good home. They communicated well, via email and phone, never leaving us hanging with questions or a missed appointment. They definitely placed the cat first; from the form we filled out, to the fact that they actually checked our references, all of their behavior was to ensure that the cat got a good home. Putting the cat first is important because it shows that they treat the cat well. If you adopt from a shelter that does not care of the animals, they will not be well trained or socialized. They may be anxious, weaned too early, or have unhygienic habits. Going to a shelter where they truly care of the animals is truly the best idea for both you and the animal. read more

I think the place has gone down hill. We adopted a dog in 2005 and was able to walk through to see the dogs. The one we adopted, chose us. He barked for our attention each time we walked by. We were able to take him home for the night before actually adopting him. Our visit the other day had everything closed off. I peeked over the barrier they have set up and it looks run down. We also had to chose a dog that we were interested in, and a lady would bring them out. She wasn't very pleasant either. She had a attitude when we asked questions. My daughters boyfriend who works with dogs, kept being corrected by her for things he mentioned. I agreed with everything he was saying. We won't go back there. I feel bad for the dogs since they looked dehydrated. read more

We just adopted our new dog from Baypath two weeks ago and we are delighted with every step of the process. After being ignored by other pet rescue agencies we had applied to it was a very pleasant surprise when Baypath got right back to us, asked all the right questions and matched us with a 7 month old puppy that is a great fit for us (and for her we think). We've had dogs all our life and our last two dogs have been rescues. Everyone we dealt with was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Once we confirmed the adoption we received several thank you messages and all the appropriate paperwork for our new family member. Based on our experience we made a donation to the shelter and would rate them ten out of ten. The animals available are wonderful! Afraid I don't care for the shelter, though. Tried to spend a little bit of time doing some volunteer work for them, even went through the training. The one email I missed it turns out I didn't even need to be there as that volunteer decided he/she didn't want to give up the shift. How egotistical is that? Someone for whatever reason decided to give up a little two hour volunteer shift, then changed his/her mind, & apparently Baypath is more comfortable with the familiar than someone new wanting a shot at something. What about if a newcomer has not voluntary time to spend, but needs to report community service hours to a probation officer (they do accept individuals doing community service hours for non violent offenses), and even after doing training they now need to find another venue to perform the community service hours of his/her sentence? I think it's very egotistical to want to stick with the familiar in a little two hour, unpaid spot, and, quite frankly, I think strictly communicating in emails is a very cold, impersonal way of getting acquainted with potential volunteers. How does one get a feeling for someone who wants to care for living things behind a computer? It's quite ironic considering not one, but two of my communications were misunderstood. In the second one, I stated I had an obligation Tuesday & Thursday, was there anything available Wednesday or a weekend day, to get back the shelter has no openings Tuesday, Thursday or any weekend day. I'm not available Tuesday or Thursday either, which I had stated. I want all homeless pets to get loving temporary or permanent homes. As for me, I think I'll try my luck for volunteering someplace else. read more

I adopted a dog from BHS after having a horrible experience with a RI pet store with my previous dog. Now that I truly understand puppy mills, I will never go to a pet store again! My dog from here is adorable and I love her! The staff called to follow up during the month that I fostered her before the official adoption. They did a lot for her- brought her up from South Carolina, treated her kennel cough and worms. Last year my best friend a 15 year old Weimaraner's health took a turn for the worse. Walking became a chore for him. He got to the point where he would just lay on his bed all day and I had to fight to get him outside. Like most dog owners I really cared for the dog and wanted his last year of life to be happy. He loved to be outside so having him stuck in the house all of the time was very painful for me. In the past I have donated to the Baypath Humane folks when they hosted fund raisers to promote their healthy pets programs so I called them for possible options for me and my pet. I talked to a women over the phone and explained how much I care for my dog and was there any dog farms where he could spend his last days happy and outside with other dogs. Again...I was looking for options. Well the women over the phone bashed me saying how I did not care for my dog and was very rude in her tone to me. She questioned my intentions and even my loyalty to a friend I have had for 15 years. She made me so angry that I returned a vulger response and finally hung up the phone. (I know ..I know...I played myself and lost my cool.) Once I cooled down and returned the call and told the women how I have supported them over the years with my hard earned money and now when I needed advice it was not there. THEY WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER PENNY FROM ME OR MY FAMILY. Beware of there people read more

A couple years back we were looking for a couple kittens after our much loved cat died. While the people were accommodating in letting us play with several, there was a distinct feeling that they really didn't want us adopting any of the kittens. As it turned out, none of the kittens quite fit the bill and we moved on. This year I noticed a puppy for adoption. We have two older dogs that can't go on long walks or runs anymore and I wanted to bring in a new dog to be socialized and trained with our old girls while getting it trained up for runs and hikes later (which is a long process - months - you build up to). I went to see the puppy and the women immediately informed us how large the dog would get (up to 75 pounds) and how active the dog would be. I indicated that active was not an issue because the dog would be going on hikes and runs, to which she immediately went into the fact that dogs aren't allowed to do that until they are at least a year. I informed her I completely understood and that it took time to train them for that. She asked about our current dogs and I told her their ages (13 and 14) and that they were a husky and eskimo - both high energy dogs. She then harped on how hard a puppy could be on them at that age and she would be a high energy dog. The fact that I had experience with high energy dogs didn't seem to register. She did bring the puppy out for us to see her. It was a hound mix, sniffing everywhere as a hound would, and was both friendly but more interested in exploring the area. I tested her to see if she would come when engaged or at least show interest. I looked at how easily I could get her attention as she was focused in sniffing out the pen. I moved my hands across her body and paws checking to see if she would nip or become agitated. All the things you watch for to get a sense of temperament and trainability. The women kept harping on how aloof this breed was. Wanted to know if we had had a hound. I told her we were familiar with hounds because my brother in law had one and it came everywhere. She just continued to bring up all these things that just seemed to indicate she thought we couldn't handle this dog or shouldn't have this dog. It was just annoying! In the end the issue was that we were headed on vacation and the three weeks before being able to take the dog home (even after they still needed to do a vet check on us and have us bring our dogs to visit this dog) was more time than they would consider. Her face and demeanor immediately changed to almost glee while she said, "you should just come back then." I won't go back. I pity the animals that need a good home and have to go through that woman's pre-judgement before your are worthy of a dog, or cat, or any other animal for adoption. While the place is clean and the animals are well cared for, the place never gave me a good vibe. That puppy has been listed for a few weeks and still there. Maybe it will be there still in a few weeks. But, what other 'judgement' hoops of approval are there with the application and visit? Really not worth it. If they were really about finding a good home for their animals they might try liking people too. read more

We adopted our dog here last summer. We love Luna so much and the shelter does a good job. They are no-kill, which is always awesome considering how many animals are brought to shelters each year. They also accept out-of-state animals (which is how our doggie ended up there). They staff was for the most part pretty helpful and gave us a little tour of the shelter and let us take out the dogs to walk and play with. It was raining when we went, and the dogs are kept outside, so keep that in mind. The cats also have an outdoor play area, which I think is a great touch! Some of the staff were rude, but not to us. A girl brought in an injured kitten while we were completing our adoption process and I thought that the woman who was dealing with her was very cruel. The girl was really upset over her kitten and the woman kept saying how he would probably die and how she shouldn't have let him get out. Now I understand that taking your animal to a shelter instead of a vet is not ideal but sometimes people just don't know what they're doing. She kept going on and on about how they couldn't guarantee someone else wouldn't adopt him before she could and how they wouldn't hold him but it didn't matter since he was probably a goner. The girl was just crying her eyes out. All around a bad scene. Another thing that was less-than-ideal is that they didn't seem to know about our girl at all. I realize that a shelter has a lot of animals cycling through but they got her energy level all wrong. Luckily we were prepared to handle a high-energy dog but a lot of people would have returned her. Additionally, they neglected to tell us that she needed kennel cough medication until AFTER we had adopted her and driven her home (an hour trip!). We had specifically been avoiding adopting an ill animal and had in fact turned another dog down because of it (I know kennel cough isn't that serious but it can cause lung problems later in life so we were trying to start out with a healthy animal). Again, it wasn't the end of the world, but they seemed a little disorganized. All in all though, I can't complain. They're a pretty much totally volunteer operation and they are no-kill so they're awesome in those regards. And we got a great dog. Just make sure you are very thorough in asking questions during the adoption process because your dog may have some things to consider that aren't in their official files. read more

We recently adopted our 7 month old puppy from here in August and experienced a very smooth adoption process. After just coming from the Sterling Shelter, dogless, we arrived at Baypath a half hour before they officially opened. The staff welcomed us and encouraged us to meet and play with the dogs while they continued to prep for opening. There was no pressure to adopt whatsoever. Luckily for us, we spent a good hour playing with our new pup and initiated the adoption process right away. The staff was extremely busy, but they found a way to accommodate all adoptees and adopters. The shelter does a good job with keeping in touch and we provide updates to them on how our adorable pup is doing. You can tell that they genuinely care about the animals. Their website is always up to date with the new pet pictures and bios. They actually take the time to write bios for each pet! To further support that this place is awesome: during the snow storm last year, all the volunteers spent the night in the basement of the shelter to stay with the dogs and cats. I'll only be adopting from Baypath from here on out and will recommend them to anyone that is looking for a forever pet! read more

This is an amazing shelter that takes great care of their animals. We adopted a puppy though them from the brown dog project in Jamaica. They do this regularly so they often have puppies I think. Our dog is fantastic and was in great health when we got him. They also had only two older dogs when we visited. Those dogs were out with visitors and were clearly very well cared for and well behaved. When we adopted they did a thorough but not unnecessarily zealous vetting to make sure we could handle the dog. They recognized he was high energy and challenging and that has certainly been true ;) but I'm glad we have him! They also provided a free genetic background, perhaps because he came here with the rest of his litter. If you want a dog for a family I highly recommend this shelter. read more

We had the best experience at Baypath today. All of the staff were beyond helpful and friendly. It was obvious they cared about the dogs and Liz took the time to explain all of the paperwork and make sure were prepared and comfortable with our new buddy. When sending off our pup, they provided dry and canned food, her toys, and a blanket she was accustomed to sleeping on so she'd feel more confident in new surroundings. It was such a thoughtful and kind gesture. I have nothing but good things to say about baypath. These are people who genuinely care about their dogs and finding homes for them. read more

You would think that in spite of an excess of dogs spawning wildly from down south and on death row, getting a dog in the northeast would be somewhat easy for a loving family with prior dog experience and resources to raise a dog (albeit without a fence). However, after reaching out to ten different organizations in or near MA, some of which we put in more effort with a full application and some we put in less by simply inquiring about a dog or two, only one rescue group worked out to be the winner in our family's quest for a dog - - that was Baypath Humane Society. We reached out to Baypath as we noticed one particular rescue that seemed very beautiful and sweet, but was very shy perhaps. The ad mentioned that they thought the dog might work best in a family with kids 13 or older. I wrote to the organization and asked if the 13-year age limit was a show stopper as we had two girls that were under that age, but one who really loved animals. The current foster mom, Michelle, responded and said the age wasn't a deal breaker, but she was worried that younger kids might not have the patience to "wait it out" especially if they were hoping for a dog to run and play. I spoke by phone with Michelle who was helping the organization. We talked extensively about the dog and about our family background/situation to give her a clearer picture. Michelle thought it might be best if we came to visit the dog to see if it was a match. Due to the Thanksgiving break, we decided to visit the following Sunday at a time that would not to conflict with a Patriot's game as she was a big fan. My youngest, who was 9 y/o and the animal lover in our family behind myself, was also up for the journey. We ventured out on a cold day and Michelle had a few other dogs at home that were higher energy and bouncing around. We decided it would be best if we fed the dog on the deck with some turkey. Michelle also was very forthcoming with details about the dog as she didn't want there to be any surprises for us down the road. The dog came out very slowly on the porch and delicately took some food from our hands. She was extremely timid, but so kind and sweet. After walking the dog by leash in her closed backyard and looking at the nearby chicken coop, we headed back inside and my daughter and I got to send more time with the dog. We told her we would discuss the meeting with our family and would get back to her. Later that night we emailed Michelle and told her we thought it was a great visit. She also agreed. She thought an on-site visit at our home would be best, so we decided to meet mid-week at night. Unfortunately, Michelle had a family health conflict at the last minute and inquired if our youngest would be really upset if she couldn't make it. I told her no worries. She rescheduled to make the trip on the following Saturday morning. She met the whole family and we even ventured to a nearby woods path to see how the dog would do with a family walk. The dog while a bit shy as we knew, but had a perfect demeanor. Michelle continued to speak openly and honestly with us about the dog and answered all of our questions. After she left with the dog, we internally discussed this particular dog and thought she was an ideal fit for our family. We relayed this information to Michelle telling her we thought the dog was amazing and we were all committed. She called me later that night and told us that in spite of some initial concerns by the director (merely due to their age below 13), that she had not felt this optimistic about a family referral for a rescue in a long time. Michelle has fostered over 50 dogs helping out Baypath. We decided the next day we would pick up the dog at Michelle's house. Michelle met with us even though it conflicted with her Patriot's game. She wrote up some notes for day-to-day care for the dog and she generously gave us a flea & tick sample, heartgard sample, leash, warm dog jacket, dog collar, dog wall coat/key hanger & in-ground dog leash stake. We have been making baby steps each day with our dog and she is truly fantastic. We made a small tax donation to the organization as a thank you as the price for the dog was slightly less expensive than other organizations. I received an immediate, personalized email from the executive director thanking me for the donation and letting me know that she would pass along the positive feedback to Michelle. All in all there is going to be some bias in reviewing the dog organization that ultimately ends up finding you a dog. However, for the open communication via email & text, the candid information/feedback and the extensive weekend efforts made by Michelle, the overall experience with Baypath was head and tails above other rescue groups in our humble opinion. read more

I recently adopted a cat from Baypath and couldn't be happier with the whole experience! Came there to look at their cats and was surprised how well the shelter is set up. They had dogs outside by the parking lot in fairly large fenced areas to run and play in. It was nice out, but I'm sure they have an indoor area for them as well. I was there for about an hour and a half and saw a few volunteers come and go to walk the dogs! As I came up to the shelter an employee greeted me and offered me help. She showed me around and then let me walk around and explore the cats. Unlike other shelters I've been to, here they don't follow you around but instead let you be one on one with the cats. There are two areas for the cats: One, is a room with a few cages (for new cats), their food, water and litter. The other area is outside through that room. It is fenced in and semi covered for some sun & shade. They have scratch posts, toys, boxes and shelves there for the cats to play with. There were about 12 cats there at the time and I happened to find one that I loved. The employees answered all my questions and had me fill out an application which they did follow up on with my references. I said that I will come back the next day to pick Murphy up and they suggested what to bring and buy ahead of time. I came in the following day and they had Murphy ready to go with all his medical history / paperwork. I had to sign a few forms, but the employees were extremely thorough and helpful. They even gave me his bed and and a sample of food (both wet and dry) that he's been eating there, suggesting I mix it in with the new to make it an easy transition. Murphy is a very sweet boy. He was scared the first day and did hide under the couch when he first came out of the carrier.. However towards the evening he was already exploring around the house. He feels right at home now and I'm sure he's happy - I am! Baypath Humane Society made it an easy first experience for me! They seem to not only care a lot about the pets and their potential new owners but they also seem to like their job. I'll be sure to recommend them to everyone and perhaps even use them again if / when I'm ready for a dog.. Good luck to all and happy adopting! read more

My husband and I think the world of this place. They are so kind and caring to each and every animal in their facility. We have had nothing but amazing experiences with them. We adopted our first dog from them about 7 years ago and she recently past away. She was a big part of our family and without them we wouldn't have ever had the honor of having her in our lives. Cleo was just the best. A few days after her passing, we decided to return and immediately open up our home and hearts to another animal in need. We were introduced to our precious Maddie. We wish we could have taken every animal home with us. The adoption process went as smoothly as our previous one. I love how they check on every detail to make sure the animals are going into a well prepared and proper home.Through all of their hard work and dedication they are able to help families find their new addition and best friend. MISLEADING PRACTICES AND RUDE MANAGEMENT Visited the shelter last week to make a donation that my 12 year old son saved his money to purchase items on the shelter's wishlist. Was told rudely by the manager, leave it over there without even a thank you. Fine, we do it for the pets. We started the adoption process that day for a puppy we fell in love with, the final stage which was supposed to be today, the meet and greet with my other dogs. Upon arrival, we could not find the puppy outside, even though when I spoke to the shelter yesterday they said she would be back there today for the meet and greet (she was in foster). Walking in with my two children upon inquiring I was told, SHES NOT HERE. SHE WAS ADOPTED THIS MORNING. After talking to the shelter yesterday and confirming that my references had completed their calls, the shelter informed me I was the only applicant and that I just needed to come in for the meet and greet. When I told her that, the manager waved a clipboard at me and said, your references never called back. A LIE. Both sent me screenshots of their phone records detailing the time and duration of the call. I told her that and was rudely dismissed with a "They did not call". Horrified as there were families around and my 2 children were now confused and devastated, I opted to leave as not to upset those around. Stopping at another shelter on the way home as I now had two heartbroken children, the woman at the front took one look at their faces and I began the "we were at the final stages of adopting a dog and she said "Oh no,,,, don't tell me.... Baypath." Apparently, this happens quite a bit there recently, as recently as someone who posted earlier today about the same thing happening to them today, which was promptly removed. The Board of Directors need to take a hard look at the practices of this shelter and the management. Like Share read more

I have adopted two dogs from Baypath and could not be happier with both experiences! I highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a dog or a cat. They are thorough in determining who is a good candidate for adoption and they seem to get to know the dogs there pretty well. They have a lot of dogs and a shelter environment is a lot different from a home environment, so it is impossible for them to predict how each and every dog will respond to going into a home. Additionally, a lot of the dogs are from out of state and are not with them for long before being adopted. But, I think they do a pretty great job. Beside the application process, they try to get to know their applicants to ensure they are the right fit for the dog they are applying for. When we adopted our last dog, they asked us tons of questions about why another dog now?, what are you expecting adding this dog to your little pack?, etc. I never felt like they were drilling us, but more conversing with us because they really wanted to know for the sake of the dog and their own piece of mind. They really love the dogs (and cats!) there and want the best for them. They staff is beyond friendly. We went to a handful of shelters when we were looking for the first dog we adopted from Baypath, but their staff were unfriendly or they didn't have the right dog for us. Baypath was different. The staff are worked hard, but they always act like they have all the time in the world to talk to you and get to know you and your family. The have a beautiful kennel set up - the outdoor enclosures where the dogs can play are spacious and stocked with toys. It is also really wonderful to see them trying to pair or group the dogs so that they are not lonely. Their cat enclosure is great too. They even have a huge pen in the back where you can introduce your dogs to the potential adopted pup. My dog Steve and his new sister, Dylan had a blast running around the big pen out back when they first met. We got to see how they played together to decide if they were a good fit. The staff even called to check up a few days later and see how everything was going with the new addition to the family! They were honest about her tendency towards same-sex aggression, but we were willing to work with her through her dominance issues because we have a lot of experience with dogs and understand that shelter dogs sometimes come with baggage. Overall two wonderful experiences with this shelter will definitely bring me back again in the future. As for David -- I agree that you were not doing the right thing by your dog. Dogs are pack animals and tearing him from his pack at a delicate stage of his life would be cruel. They were right to tell you such. If your dog is having mobility issues, see a veterinarian because it sounds like your friend was in pain - I don't know what you expected from a shelter. Who would fund a retirement community for discarded senior dogs that most likely had underlying medical problems? Do you know what the vet bills would be like? Please do not get another dog - adopting a dog is committing to it for life. read more

I never been a cat guy until my girlfriend and I adopted the sweetest little kitten a few months back that I truly fell in love with, (sounds great right?). All was well until last week when she experienced difficulty breathing and lost her apatite. We brought her into our veterinarian who quickly responded; she drained 70 mL of fluid from her lungs and informed us the test results showed FIP (feline infectious peritonitis). After asking the vet about what caused her FIP infection, she said the most likely cause was from the shelter, as we have never introduced her to other cats. Cats most frequently pick up FIP from liter boxes, where infected cats defecate and the uninfected cats come in contact with he virus while using the box later. Unfortunately, our little loved one has but weeks to live, if she is lucky. My suggestion to you is AVOID BAYPATH(!!!), as FIP is a terminal viral infection and losing a loving 6-month old kitty is just down right wrong. read more

VERY disappointed with this place. My husband and I drove 40 min to get here. We went in hoping to get a kitten for my grandmother as she has recently lost her cat (which she got as a kitten). She finally agreed to getting another cat but wanted another kitten. The older lady was VERY rude telling me that the kittens aren't "gifts" and my grandmother doesn't want a kitten, she wants an older cat. She wouldn't listen to what I had to say and we couldn't interact with the kittens. Overall experience here was frustrating and unprofessional. read more

My first interaction with Baypath was when they helped me find a home for a stray cat in the midst of winter and they were very kind. Years later, I became a volunteer dog walker and a foster. My favorite thing about Baypath is that they will personalize a plan to help tougher to adopt dogs, providing positive reinforcement training, enrichment activities, and even field trips to keep dogs happy during their stay and to improve their chances of a successful adoption. I also like the wooded trails where we can walk dogs in a quiet place. The dogs love that extra time being able to sniff and explore. read more

If you are in search of a pet Baypath Humane Society is NOT the place to go. They are not organized, there are papers everywhere. I wonder how many of those they loose. The service was terrible and the place was very small for such a popular place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My family wanted kittens. We couldn't take them out of the cages and they didn't offer to hold them. We had to ask, and the staff still didn't let any of the kids handle them. On top of that they rushed us. I had never been that rushed to pick a pet before. The staff closed the cage door after 15 second of petting and off to the next. It was horrible. Our plan was to spend a little time maybe 20 minutes in the room petting and being with the kittens. We spent less than 10 minutes in the room. Once we chose a pair we filled out a paper in hope to pick them up the next day. The staff asked if we had any cats and we said yes but she passed away a few months ago. Then the lady asked for the recent vet record. We reminded her the cat was dead. She insisted. We told her we didn't know if we still had the papers. Now we have to go home and search for some sort of proof of the vet record or the recent record itself. Who keeps their dead cats files and records? They are dead what more could you ask for. And that cat lived until 20 and was very healthy and cared for. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Main point is if you fill out a form to get a dog/cat I wouldn't be surprised if someone else adopts the dog/cat you wanted, before you even come back to finish the process, due to them loosing/misplacing or forgetting your files. (This had happened to a man when we were filling out our forms.) So I bet it wasn't the first time. For the rating I would give it a ZERO, horrible. read more

We used to get dogs from here, but the people were so mean to us. The lady pretented to be on her phone so she didnt want to talk to us. Also, we were interested in a puppy i felt a strong connection with, and she tried to convince us that he was petrified of me. Also the people there are so grumpy and angry. Sadly, my brother died unexpectedly, and no one in our family could take his dog, we surrendered his dog to Baypath, they were extremely kind and compassionate, and kept in touch with us to let us know how the dog was doing. My brother's dog had been abandoned in a different state, before my brother rescued him, so the dog had some anxiety and trust issues, but the people at Baypath were wonderful. The day of our brother's funeral Baypath sent us an email to give us the good news that the dog was being adopted into a kind and loving home. I will always be grateful for their help during a very, very difficult time. read more

I brought my family here in search to adopt a dog. I wanted to adopt locally instead of from an out of State rescue figuring there were already plenty of dogs in MA that needed a good home. I spent some time there on a Friday, and went back again on Saturday to take a dog for a walk. My family and I spent 3 hours there - 2 hours being spent with the dog. We did a lot of talking to the worker that was helping us. Filled out the paperwork, gave vet and personal references and they told us we could pick her up on Monday. They called us Monday at 1 and said the vet said we did not take our animals on a regular basis - I called the vet and they said we needed to sign a release for a reference, however no one had called - sent my husband right over - in the same town. Baypath called me back and said the vet reference checked out - we were all set there, just had to check our personal references- they called me back at 500p saying that they denied our application based on the vet - were rather rude, and said the woman we were dealing with who earlier in the day had the day off - was now on vacation. So I then decided to try the out of state adoption. I filled out the paperwork - they checked my vet reference - said there was a period of time they were missing from the vet office - I gave them other vets I used - when I had difficulty with my own vets office (they wouldnt see my sick animal on a Friday afternoon when I called until Monday and the animal hospital ended up euthinizing it that evening) - they called the other vets, as well as my personal references. They called to tell me my references were good, and they wanted to come see my home - which they did, and then approved me. I think these rescue groups care a lot more about the homes these animals go to, and come to see first hand where the animal will be living. I was shocked that the Humane Society did not approve me - however I have a wonderful dog that was heading to the gas chamber, and she now have a furever loving family. I think the workers at Baypath are wonderful people, and love the animals however the ones that make the decisions final decisions should be the one out in the yard spending time with the people who want to adopt them and see them interact with the animals. read more

Granted this was a few years ago... We were looking to adopt and had been to a NUMBER of shelters and agencies looking for the right dog for our family. Thirteen years previous we had a big lab/husky mix (his mother too) and were no stranger to dogs or their needs. After visiting numerous times we decided to go to Baypath and look into the dogs they offered. There was a few that would meet what we needed (young enough to get used to a cat and to be trained, cat was a must; the training would come if needed). At the time we had people home 24/7 so we were ready. We filled out an application and the woman who took our information was rude, unbelievably rude. I explained we had a fenced-in exercise area (30ft x 30ft) our previous dog had used with a dog house in the shade and the woman (despite explaining we had no intention of "locking the dog outside") took this to mean we were keeping the dog outside 24/7. Our previous dog was an escape artist so we needed a secure area where he would not chase after every person who came near the yard. He was a "puller" (if you have a husky or sled dog you know what I mean) and tying him up while we did yard work was difficult for him. Our dog was in most days and nights just in the hot summer evenings he wanted to be out in the shade (and pool when he got loose). We left our application for a large bloodhound/lab mix but it was clear this woman was going to dump it in the trash. We waited two weeks (we were told THEY needed time to process the application and call our three non-relative references (?)) and when we never heard back we called them and was told "Oh yeah the dog is still here" and we headed down. On the road we called again confirming we would be by in 20 minutes and was told the dog was adopted. I explained we were told the dog was available and was in turn told one of our references did not call back so we were kicked. I had my then 11 year-old autistic son in the car and having to explain to him he wasn't getting a dog was the most horrible experience I had ever had. We continued our search and found an amazing shelter in Sterling, MA. We found our forever buddy and have a great respect for their wonderful, caring staff and donate. We used to donate to the ASPCA but after being treated like a criminal I do not think the funds are being used correctly. Don't these people know they are the face of the shelter? read more
