Poor Fiona has been thru alot the past few days with her shots, deworming, and spaying. I can only imagine before she got here from Texas as well. So her little tummy the first night she got home was not good from all the change and Deworming. I called them the next day to see if they could email her shot records (which I forgot on their counter when we adopted her) so I could take her to the vet and get medicine to settle her stomach. We live an hour away and they said they have a volunteer we lives close to us and sent medicine with her for Fiona so we wouldn't have to make the long drive. How kind! Please don't shop and consider adopting from Buddy Dog because they really do care. read more

Anyone trying to adopt in the time of COVID-19 likely has a story to tell. Ours starts and stops with Buddy Dog. Our first visit there was mid March and they had just closed their doors 5 minutes before we arrived. I don't have to tell how the next few months went! Countless online applications for dogs we will love but never meet....rejections, wrong it, etc. finally, we submit an application to buddy dog -they have a number of adult dogs on location....and within a couple of days I get a lovely zoom interview with Michel, an actual person to listen to what our rescue needs are. And, she gave me all the encouragement I needed to make 2 back to back appointments to meet 2 potential dogs. She followed up with a late night email, assuring me that both dogs would be available until I saw them and made a decision. The next morning, I got to my appointment and my dog chose me. I didn't disagree with her! So I relinquished the second dog...a senior beauty who was adopted later that day. My girl, Lola, still needed to meet my husband. We came back together in the afternoon, introduced Lola to the husband, and we signed the papers and drove our newest family member home. We are keeping her name. I got a lot of guidance and advice from the 3 people we talked to at Buddy Dog...sorry I can't recall everyone's names. It has not been a full week yet, and our girl has settled into her home like she was born here. I will always be grateful to Buddy Dog for making this match come true! read more

I'm extremely disappointed in Buddy Dog. We were very honest in our application and the interview process went smoothly. They initially seemed to be really understanding that our dad (who is not from this country) wouldn't be willing to come into the shelter with the rest of the family. When my sister and I arrived at the shelter to do an initial visit, the woman with us seemed polite enough, however, there were parts of this interaction that bothered us. For one, we explained the cultural differences with our parents. The lady seemed to make many assumptions and certainly microaggressions about us (not sure how many people of color come through the doors of Buddy Dog). She did not seem to understand our family situation and firmly posited that the initial cat we were interested in wouldn't be a good fit for our family. I struggled (as most people of color do) to not sound defensive or aggressive as I explained that my dad actually would have been more than appropriate and loving with any pet; rather, it is the rule that he needed to be there that he would have felt reservations about. We assured them that we understand why they wanted all of us to be there but it was hard to bring my dad in, especially if he were to feel judged. Moreover, the worker stated: "There are a lot of people here that dance around others, but I don't. If I don't feel comfortable with someone, they're not getting a cat." This bothered me because while I understand their dedication to ensuring a good fit for their animals, I wondered about biases and how tainted someone's subjective view about someone can be. The microaggression was deeply felt as this person stated: "Well. I know that different cultures view animals differently. I mean, don't people in India worship cows and they don't eat them? And maybe they'd view cats and dogs differently." This bothered us, especially the tone. Many Asian cultures are stereotyped for "eating" cats/dogs. And by the way, because we are Catholic and from a certain part of India, we actually do eat beef. The most upsetting thing (minus the perceived microaggressions) was that I shared that I will be getting married next month and will be moving with my fiance in the winter (that is up in the air). This was conveyed to their team. When I reached out to the original person I'd been in contact with that my whole family is ready for a visit, she stated that she heard that I will be moving next month and that I should come back when my fiance and I were settled as behavioral problems arise with moves (understandable, and yet, animals are adaptive and it would have been a slow, mindful progression. They did not even allow me to ask for their help in how to do this either). I quickly clarified that my wedding is next month and that we will be moving months down the line and that the cat would be for our family (parents) home. No response. My thoughts are that while I love their dedication to all animals and their well-being, I felt that we were punished for being honest and open. I felt that there was such rigidity and NO room to fully understand our plans and how we'd care for a cat. I also could not help but wonder had we been a White, wealthy, well-to-do Wayland/Sudbury/Natick family, providing limited information, would they have responded to us differently? Moving forward, I would love for there to be more cultural/racial compassion and understanding that moves happen. Lives change and animals can adapt. I wish they gave us a chance to see that we are incredibly loving people. That we come from generations of farmers that have cared for their animals and that just because we are different, it does not mean that assumptions should be made and that there cannot be any flexibility. read more

We adopted a cat from Buddy Dog about seven years ago and had a great experience. We applied to adopt another cat this year and were able to set up an appointment. We went to the appointment and were close to adopting a cat but found out that it had been returned by another owner because of behavioral issues. The adoption coordinator seemed to understand and said she would keep an eye out for other cats for us. Since then we've inquired about other cats and have tried to set up appointments, but the coordinator has been unresponsive. I was finally able to get someone to return my call today and was told they didn't have any availability this weekend. I asked if I could set up an appointment for next weekend and was told that they couldn't do that, and that you needed to know which cat you wanted to visit for an appointment. Perfectly understandable. They don't want you wasting their time. I asked if I could make an appointment to see a specific cat and was told I should look into other shelters. It felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode, or the Twilight Zone, or both. I don't get it. Seems like a bizarre way to run a business. read more

A wonderful little shelter! I went to Buddy Dog to drop off a donation of dog food. I had to put my dog to sleep a few weeks ago, and no longer needed the food (plus every time I say it in the pantry it reminded me of my dog, and my heart broke all over again). I was not planning on going to the back and looking at the dogs because I knew I would end up falling in love with them and want to bring them home with me. But I did. And I did end up with a pretty big crush on a sweet dog that reminded me of the one I had just lost (I almost started crying). Seeing them in the cages is understandably sad, but you can tell that the dogs are being well taken care of. They were surrounded with toys and blankets and treats. The volunteers were all very nice and caring. The cat section of the shelter is fantastic as well. All the cats looked content and stress free. Some are out and about, hanging out on various cat trees and window alcoves. When I am ready to get another dog, I will definitely go back to Buddy Dog to adopt. read more

See that adorable little dog in my shot? That is Rocco, a proud alumni of the Buddy Dog school of hard knocks. When I first went to the Buddy Dog Shelter ready to seriously adopt, I was unsure of what I was looking for. I walked past a few dog cages (where they are lovingly cared for) and shopped around. First was Zippy, a friendly little chap. Then came Julie, a one year old brown and white dog from down south. Then came another dog with a promising future. Finally, I saw Rocco II (they apparently only have about 20 names they give dogs), and he barked at me. I said, "eh, he's a barker," and moved on. Then we went to the woman at the front and told her our list of dogs. Here is a transcript of what happened: Me: "We'd like to take Zippy for a walk." her: "No, you don't. He's way too high maintenance for you." Me: "Ummmm, ok. How about Julie?" her: "Nope, she's not ready, too new to the shelter." me: "Wow, ok...how about [forgot street urchin's name]?" her: "Nope, severe anxiety disorder." At this point, I was discouraged. Then my roomate Bevin C. piped up and said "How about Rocco II?" and she said "YES! He is the sweetest guy in the world!" We took him for a walk, and he was indeed everything she said. Since that point, he has become the perfect addition to our lives, being a great combination of the perfect housedog/guard dog/awesome dude. Without their wonderful guidance, patience, and care, who knows what kind of stress ball we could have adopted. I recommend this place highly. Wonderful values, caring staff, and a real desire to place you with the right dog for you. P.S. Rocco is one of those Puerto Rican dogs that Lindley E. mentions. His life of living on the streets for a year and then a cage for several months have only made him bond with us more. He does, however, has an uncontrollable urge to eat things he finds on the street. That little guttersnipe has never chewed anything in the house, but put a chicken wing underneath a pile of leaves and he is on it like spaghetti sauce on my nephew's face. read more

While approving over-all of Buddy Dog's mission, there are three caveats: 1. If you're desperate for a pet, go elsewhere: they do not do same-day adoptions. 2. You have to agree to allow them to inspect your residence. 3. They insist that all cats shall become indoor-only regardless of the animal's history. read more

Hooray for buddy Dog! A no-kill animal shelter that takes THIS kind of care of their animals truly deserves to be praised for what they are... I got my baby girl Roxie (Pitt-Beagle mix) from them ten years ago. Not only has she become the absolute joy of my family's lives (my dad says she was the best $65 he ever spent! :-P), but our experience with Buddy Dog was just as good 10 years ago as it was a few months ago when I went to look at kittens with my boyfriend. They have always been a clean, professional facility and their animals all seem very happy. Both times I went they welcomed us enthusiastically and helped us decide what we really wanted. When we were getting Roxie a decade ago, they took us through and after determining what kind of family we were, picked a few options they thought would be mutually beneficial. They truly take the time to get to know every animal that stays with them. However, the people who run this place aren't just out to sell you a pet. The second time around I went with my boyfriend looking for a kitten. We were still early in our decision process and wanted to take our time picking out the cat that really felt like ours. After spending most of an afternoon hanging out with several kittens they encouraged us to take some time and think about it. They are one of the most responsible places that I have ever encountered, and won't send a pet home with anyone who walks in the door whether they are sure or not. read more

I love that there's an animal shelter in Sudbury. Minus 2 stars for cleanliness. The place absolutely REEKED and there was no easy access to sinks or alcohol cleanser for the humans. I've been to a lot of shelters trying to find my new dog and this place makes me worry dogs from there are more susceptible to kennel cough/diseases since it's in need of a good cleaning. read more

i heart Buddy Dog! We visited last May after seeing our future family member, a 1.5 yr old Rottweiller Bassett Hound mix named Lexie (actually was 'Genisis' at the time), on their website. She was a Sato, which means 'street dog', from Puerto Rico, and Buddy Dogs is one of the shelters in Mass that brings in these rescue pups to find a better home for. Their facility is clean and a very happy environment. They have a large backyard so you can take potential pets out for a nice stroll. And their staff is very nice and cares so much for all of their animals! I recommend them to anyone I know who is looking to brighten up their life with a furry friend! And Lexie has made our home one very happy place, along with her brother, Rocco, who is also a 5 yr old Bassett Rotty Mix we adopted from upstate NY. read more

I see I've only written reviews when I have a bad experience so I wanted to write a good one. Granted my review may be slanted because we got the best dog in the whole wide world () but we had a great experience here. Staff was very knowledgeable and gave us as much info as they had. Keep in mind everyone is a volunteer and also can only go by the information they've been told or seen first hand. Everything moved in a timely manner. Wow, where do I start. Rude, very rude, oh so rude, and condescending staff who took one look at me and my fiancé and judged that we had no dog experience (little did they know they were talking to a vet student who had been a vet tech for 10 years, has a bachelors in animal science and currently has a wonderful dog, we just look young) and were completely rude. When they let us meet the dog we had seen on PetFinder, they neglected to tell us he was vicious and hated men - well be bit my fiancé in the face. Wonderful. They were not apologetic, they just said after the fact, "oh yeah, he doesn't like men". Well gee, thanks for the heads up. Meanwhile, they had three dogs running around with wet, dirty bandages on that are any vet's night mare. I could smell one of the bandages from quite a distance - I can only imagine how nasty whatever was under that bandage that needed to be changed over a month ago looked like. Despicable. Really, that is animal neglect. Then when we did find a dog that we liked, they pretty much said no without ever having us fill out an adoption application or asking us about ourselves. Okay, so my fiancé looks like he is in high school despite being 30, but that is no reason to be rude to us. She could have asked about us before assuming we were children. Despite the fact he was listed as a shar-pei mix, the woman at the desk leaned over a whispered to us "well clearly he is a pit bull so...". First of all - shar-peis notoriously fail temperament tests and pit bulls are among the highest rated dogs on temperament tests so why would they use shar-pei over pit bull? I mean, I understand "boxer mix" or "terrier mix" or "american bulldog mix", but really they covered up the fact he was a pit with "shar pei mix"??? They are nuts. And this dog was a love bug. Then the excuse was his skin condition. He had Demodexx, a mite that lives in healthy skin but becomes a problem in times of stress - like being in an over crowded shelter. Basically he wouldn't fully heal from this skin condition until he was placed in a home and allowed time to acclimate. I could not even begin to believe how rude they were. I left so upset because when I was a kid I brought two kittens to them that my brother and I had found in our tree house (my dad was allergic, so despite our pleading, we couldn't keep them) and I was sad to think that those poor kittens had to deal with such terrible people! read more

I first arrived in the central Mass area a year ago. I already have one pet, a bulldog whom I love and cherish. Recently, I have been looking for a friend for him. I have been to Buddy Dog numerous times and each time has been worse. This last (and only) time that i was there was today. I went with a youth that I was helping to have a fun experience. I asked to "play" with one of the dogs, Luna, because earlier that week my boyfriend and I had seen her and were interested in adopting her. I was rudely told that we do not let our dogs "play" with people who are not interested. In an attempt not to disclose too much of my personal life in front of the youth I was helping I considered not responding. However, the woman was so rude that I let her know that my boyfriend and I were serious about adopting soon (once we moved to our new apartment). It did not stop there. The woman proceeded to tell me that the dog was part boxer and they did not know the other part but that she looked part pit. I told her I would be renting and she gave me attitude about renting and how it would be "up to the land lord due to breed restrictions". The way she was coming off was classist towards those who are not home owners. I have done my research and I was attempting to let her know that my new landlord would not allow PUREBRED pit bulls. She continued to talk over me as I was trying to explain the situation and did not hear a word I had said. I continued to walk away in frustration and began playing with a friendly dog through the gate. She barked "NO STICKING YOUR FINGERS IN THE KENNEL". Really though, I am serious about adopting and she would not let me spend time with the dog I was interested in or even approach other dogs to see if I was equally as interested in them. To make matters worse as I was leaving she allowed two younger females (around the same age as me) take the EXACT dog I was interested in outside to "play with". Then she looked me right in the eye as to say "F you". I will be adopting in Sterling MA, thank you. Oh, p.s--- Last time my boyfriend and I were in there he witnessed a staff kicking and kneeing a dog that was sheltered there (I believe it was a doberman). read more

I do not recomend this place! Solely on how they treat people that come to adopt animals and give them a good home and take them away from a crowded shelter. I had filled out an application and I was told that they expect me to bring my blind elderly grandmother to see the cat before I pick up the kitten. Secondly there was an issue with them not knowing if the animal was available or not. I was told to call today and make sure when I will be able to pick up the kitten. I was told that currently the kitten will not be available and that when I call we will set up a time when to fill everything out and pick him up. I was also told that I should go out and buy items to get everything ready for when the kitten is brought home (which I did $200+ down the drain). I had called and was told that someone has already paid for the kitten. I feel completely cheated by this place out of the happiness that was supposed to come home with me. I thought this places was supposed to be where you can go and give a good home to an animal as well as bring the love and joy of an animal home with you. read more

I used to really like Buddy Dog. Then two things happened: I adopted a cat from them and then a year later I visited a shelter in NH to help my mom adopt a cat. The other shelter was WAY nicer. The people who staffed the other shelter were WAY nicer. I know it must at times be a stressful job but the Buddy Dog people were not very nice to us. read more

Trust me on this: Do not bother going to any other place to adopt a pet. We adopted our incredible dog in June and have nothing but positive things to say--even more so because of the other place that we visited in Sudbury, where their snobby requirements would likely have prevented us from adopting a puppy at all, let alone taking it home the next day like we did at Buddy Dog. Here, there's no snobbiness--they just want to take in as many animals as they can and find them as many loving homes as they can, which is exactly how it should be. You come in and are just looking at dogs or cats in cages, which isn't the most pleasant setting; but if you're at all interested in any of them, you get to take them out for a walk on a wooded path behind the shelter for as long as you want. You actually get to spend time with the dogs, which is SO important in making an informed decision. We got to take our dog home the very next day, and they even gave us a crate for a super low price and a couple of toys for him. Another great thing about it--if you have cats, they'll bring the dog into the room where the cats are kept and see how they react to make sure that they don't react aggressively or dangerously. SO important, I appreciated this so much and am so glad that they do this. Seriously, do not go anywhere else--this place deserves your business, and you're far more likely to find a dog that you're actually compatible with when you get to spend some alone time with them, rather than being judged and leaving wonderful animals without a home (as is the case with Save a Dog down the street). read more

After visiting several shelters in the past few months, Buddy Dog is very high on my list. My boyfriend and I adopted a dog there a few days ago, and the staff was absolutely fantastic. They worked with us during the adoption process to verify our information and offered a ton of helpful advice as our dog was going to require very specific handling. They were able to hold the dog for 24 hours so we could get landlord approval, puppy-proof our home, and have all the necessary supplies on-hand for his arrival. It was a very pleasant experience, and we felt that their dogs were well-treated - they all had roomy kennel runs, the facility was very clean, and we were happy with the way they addressed our dog's medical concerns. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone thinking about adopting a dog. read more

This no-kill shelter actually has to import dogs from other states and Puerto Rico because there are (luckily) so few strays in Massachusetts. Dogs tend to go fast here, so check the website and visit regularly. read more

We love Buddy Dog. 5 years ago we adopted an adorable little SATO from them, and she is the love of our lives. A cute little terrier mix who they had called Rosa, and we named her Holly. She loves playing in our fenced in wooded back yard and chasing squirrels. The people there were very helpful, and seem to try to match the right pet to you. I think that is better than some places that will just give a dog to anyone. They want to make sure that it will work out well for both the animal and the adopter. Some people don't like that, but I find it to be a plus on their part. I think they really care about the animals they take in, and would recommend them to anyone wanting to adopt. My boyfriend and I adopted a 3mo old puppy from Buddy Dog, and she's become a great addition to our family the past few months! We visited a number of times, and gradually got to know the staff. They got a feel for what we wanted, but did not provide much guidance. They were simply too busy. They were all incredible, nice, generous people, but too overworked to give me the experience I was expecting. Regardless, Buddy Dog has a great facility with a nice wooded trail to take the dogs on, and caged runs to play in, too. The staff obviously care about the animals, and were really excited when we brought Dahlia back in a few months later to donate some food. In terms of the adoption process, my boyfriend filled out an application (I was out of state for a few days, but he wanted me to see this puppy, so it was nice that the application was free and non committal) and we were called and notified when it was our turn to decide if we wanted to take the pup home. We arranged to see her again, where I met her for the first time and obviously fell in love! We were able to play with her in the enclosure for a loooong time without pressure. We decided that night, so the next day we provided proof of ownership of our house, and the fact that we don't have a fence was no issue. They kindly tested her with some of their cats, too. We were able to have them hang on to her for another day or so while we got our affairs in order, and at pick-up they provided us with a bunch of toys, food, documentation, and a bit of medicine to help clear up an ear infection she had (she was flown up from Puerto Rico shortly before). Overall, I would definitely consider Buddy Dog for our next pet adoption. read more
