    Schnitzel Vienna Style
    Jeanne M.

I loved Gaumenkitzel when it was the the place to go for German food in Berkeley, and I was sorry when it closed. Fortunately, a few months later, the chef and owner opened Anja's, a smaller cafe with a smaller menu but with the same commitment to Slow Food principles. Today I had Anja's Schnitzel Vienna Style plate, which was as delicious as any example of schnitzel I've had in Vienna. It's served with her carefully made macaroni salad and golden beets. I ate it in the rose garden at the back of the restaurant. It could not have been a better experience.

Half order open faced schnitzel. Scrumptious.

First time at Anja's (and not my last), it's a charming eatery cafe. I had breakfast and ordered a 1/2 schnitzel sandwich, egg casserole and a coffee. I chose to eat in the back patio area. Wow, it's a beautiful place. You are surrounded by roses in a lovely garden patio. The food was delicious. Service and warm and kind.

After reading Berkeleyside's article earlier this month about Anja's, the new cafe named after the chef and owner of the now closed Gaumenkitzel, I put it on my calendar to walk over and check out the food. (I always meant to dine at Gaumenkitzel, but just never made it over.) I neglected to take a pic of the menu posted in the window, but it had breakfast items such as oatmeal, muesli, and I think yogurt & granola parfait. The menu also had different salads and at least one soup. (Some items were marked coming soon. Today was their opening day.) I make myself granola & yogurt at home, and wasn't in the mood for a salad, but some pastries inside caught my eye before I could walk on. I think it was Anja's husband who warmly greeted me, and offered me samples when I was trying to decide on a pastry. I tried a sample of their almond cookie, which I have a weakness for in general, and it was incredibly soft, and definitely a winner. I ended up getting the "Vanilla-Cinnamon Almond Cookie" ($3.50), and "Egg & Golden Potato Muffin" ($5). (The muffin is essentially a sizable quiche bite. They had some with gruyere and one with cheddar.) There were also two types of bar cookies in the case, apple and poppy seed. The space had a some seats in the front, offering a nice spot to enjoy a light lunch. Anja made eye contact with me from her work spot at a food counter in the open kitchen and wished me a happy Tuesday. She was very warm and welcoming. I'll definitely be back to try more of their pastries, and I'll bring friends next time!

What a beautiful place! I enjoyed coffee and the porridge in the lovely rose garden. It was delicious and peaceful. Service was very kind and quick.

We were walking on University in Berkeley today and almost passed Anja's. We were heading to lunch at another place but stopped to check the menu. Seeing that it was German food (with German draft beer), we went in and were pleased to find that the owner/chef was formerly of Gaumenkitzel, one of our favorite restaurants which has since closed. As they had outdoor seating in the back (and draft REAL German beer) we decided to make it our lunch destination. The food was excellent as expected, as was the beer. We will be back again and again and again!

The lady at the counter was super nice and personable. She was easy to talk to and friendly. I ordered: * black sesame mochi muffin - nice chew, great sesame flavor, and not too sweet * churro mochi muffin - covered in cinnamon sugar, so good. Great texture as well. * banana bread pudding - looks so ooey and gooey! I took an edge piece because I like the chewy crispy texture. Love to return when I'm back in the area.

We had been to Tarocco for lunch and figured we would ask them for a quote, too. My daughter warned me that the owner is trying to be an "influencer" on Instagram and posts photos of herself in crop Tops so I should beware, but that's fine by me. We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. We took our business elsewhere and recommend that you do, too.

I ordered the Sai Oua lava egg plate, pork jowl on the side, and khanom krok. First of all, holy hell, that egg was SO soft and yummy. I loved how it was prepared--the texture was amazing, and it was seasoned to perfection with such a savory flavor. The sausage was good, but the pork jowl was where the meal really shined. Next time, I'd definitely get the grilled pork jowl lava egg plate instead. I can be pretty picky with pork, but this one melted in my mouth and had so much flavor. The khanom krok was beautiful and a great dish to order if you have friends to share it with. For me, one bite was more than enough as a sweet little dessert at the end of the meal. Their jasmine Thai tea was also really tasty. :) I'm so glad I finally got to try this spot and would definitely say it deserves all the hype!

My friend who rarely insists on eating at specific places insisted we come, a previous girlfriend was in the food industry and they have this place bookmarked for awhile. They described it as "healthy california food". We came on a Friday morning around 9:20 am and it was pretty crowded. You can't park right in front but there was plenty of street parking on the weekdays. Inside, its intimate and cozy and there is also a nice seating area outside with lots of dog-owners hanging out. Everything we had was great quality with choice ingredients where you could actually taste the difference. Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich: herb butter, roasted seasonal vegetables and onions, soft-cooked egg, and greens. Surprisingly filling, we were trying to share a bunch of little bites but ended up getting one each of these. It's fine as a stand alone mini breakfast! Put it on your list, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It's also one of those places that makes you want to stay. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and generous. Every time I come here, I tell myself I'll pace myself... and every time I fail because it's just that good. The burgers are loaded and perfectly balanced, the fries are always crisp (never soggy, which is rare), and everything tastes high-quality and made to order. You have to try the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter tastes homemade and the butter takes it to another level... it's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. I'll even DoorDash it all the way to Jingletown. The patio setup is really well done... there's a mix of larger tables for groups and higher bar-style seating for smaller hangs. The wooden furniture and cushioned benches make it comfortable, and they've got heaters for colder days and umbrellas when it's sunny, so you can usually pick your ideal spot. You order at the window and then just hang out while you wait... it's a relaxed flow and the food comes out pretty quickly. The staff are always kind and welcoming, and the whole place has a relaxed, homey vibe with really good music. Highly recommend... just come hungry.

The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.
