We came to Leopold's for dinner on a weekday around 6pm. It was pretty empty when we arrived but filled up quite a bit by the time we were done with dinner. The decor and ambiance felt like an Austrian beer hall which was fun, and the staff were friendly and attentive to us. The food we got was delicious! We got the happy hour pretzel bites, but they accidentally brought out and charged us full price for a regular pretzel. For mains we got the schnitzel and short rib. Both were delicious and the portions were really generous. We had leftovers from both to take home. We finished with the Linzer Torte for dessert which was so good and had a delicious crust. The beer menu was great as well, we enjoyed the imports and I even got a non-alcoholic imported wheat beer which I haven't had the chance to try before. This cute little German restaurant had great wiener schnitzel and good green beans. German potato salad wasn't as good as dad's but was decent. Good spatzel which you probably don't need given how much other food you get when ordering the Wiener schnitzel. The waitress told us most people get their own wiener schnitzel. We shared one three ways and had enough left over to split three ways for breakfast the next day. I had a good German beer but the 0.5L was too much for me. On a Saturday evening, I walked in without a reservation. However, for parties greater than 2, I would recommend planning a reservation. The restaurant was very comfy and homey. There was plenty of seating, but it had the potential to fill up very quickly. From the decor to the staff's festive uniforms, it gave off very traditional-German/Austrian vibes. There was very a jolly soundtrack of accordion music being played in the background... all good vibes! The service was really great! The staff were very friendly (jolly) and attentive to each table, proactively tending to the needs of customers. From my observations, they operated very fluidly, with excellent communication as I asked for a few things and two different staff members delivered the items consecutively without question. The service was also decently quick. The food came out in about 10-15 minutes. I got the wiener schnitzel, and I wished I tried more things but the portion sizes were pretty large so I held off. The wiener schnitzel was pretty okay. It was crunchy on the outside but I felt like it was lacking a little more distinctive flavor. On the bright side, the sweet lingonberry sauce carried! Been wanting to try Leopold's because it looks so cute inside and it was amazing. Everything we got was really yummy. Started with a potato pancake and the horseradish applesauce that came with it was tasty, we also got pickled cabbage. I will be thinking about that cabbage it in the future. It was sweet and warm and flavorful. For mains we got the Wiener schnitzel and Hungarian Goulash. Both really great but the goulash was pretty spicy. This type of restaurant is just not available, for the most part in more suburban locales. The place has a great buzz about it that is clearly evident in the smiles on the servers and the patrons. The german and austrian food is authentic if not the best ever. Be prepared to raise your voice a bit as it can get a slightly on the noisy side. But overall, we are so glad they re-opened after being closed for a spell a while back. read more

It is the only one and located on Polk Street on Russian Hill. The interior has a festive chalet vibe with a lot of wooden features. I wanted something hearty, so I ordered the paprika beef goulash, which came with a house salad and spätzle along with a Stiegl beer. While goulash is known as a Hungarian dish, there is an Austrian version with a few ingredient differences. Enjoyed my meal here, which was filling and satisfying. Prices are on the moderate side for SF. I would say ordering a main is sufficient, but you may want to order an appetizer if you are dining with a group. read more

Went for dinner at the Leopold's on a Friday night that happened to coincide with Valentine's day. Love the ambiance and the vibe. We sat in one of the wooden booths and it felt very cozy. Our server was very pleasant and made the experience better. I went for the only vegetarian main course dish and it was pretty good. We also got the beef goulash that came with my favorite Kasespatzle but somehow the ingredients do not make it as good as the one in Austria. The beer was excellent - we tried an Austrian beer and the Czech lager, both of which were really good. We did not have space for dessert but will visit again to try it out. read more

We had been to Leopold's under the old owner's management pre-Covid and always loved the food and environment. The new Leopold's, now owned by the chef who has been there since 2011, is nearly exactly the same in terms of decor and ambiance. The food is very similar, maybe a slightly updated menu, they even ring the bell when someone orders a boot of beer! But the prices have gone up quite a bit, which is why I'm not giving a 5 star review. For two of us ordering one .5 beer each with one entree each and one side, bill was $112, plus the added tip. No dessert or large quantities of beer. It also was only about half full on a Sunday night, when the middle table used to a jammed with tech bros. Maybe the pricing is driving folks off. The food is still delicious. I had my favorite braised beef short ribs with mashed potatoes, crispy onions and red cabbage. Husband had weinerschnitzel and loved it. We both had portions to take home. The short ribs used to be $25, now they are $35. Side of potato pancake $7, beer $12. It was really delicious and we will be back. read more

Went here for lunch and was so happy we did! We shared the trout salad and the Wiener schnitzel. The smoked trout was served in a bed of tart shredded apples with a potato pancake to the side topped with a horseradish sour cream. It went together really well and each ingredient highlighted the other. The wiener schnitzel was pounded thin and was so tender you could cut it with a fork. It came with a side of cucumber potato salad that is a refreshing alternative to old fashioned mayo filled tater salad. Light and refreshing aren't words usually used to describe potato salad but it holds true here! We'll be back for dinner so we can try the Sunday night pork knuckle special. We didn't have reservations, so we put ourselves on the waitlist, had a light bite nearby, and came back once we got notified via text that our booth was ready. There's a decent selection of German beer from 0.3L to 2L (in a boot). I ended up getting a 1L stein, which felt like just the right amount without getting too bloated from all the liquids. Mixed thoughts. Ambiance 5/5 Pretty, warm interior that takes you to a sort of German Christmas market. Plenty of space. The bar is pretty good. Service 3.5/5 Water was refilled several times but it took awhile for someone to take our order and to find someone to give us the bill. Otherwise quiet pleasant. Food 3.6/5 Schnitzel was okay. It was appropriately thin and had some crisp to it but it was surprisingly flavorless and lacked any of the boldness usually found in the dish. Some lemon was provided but it was too small to flavor the cutlets or even to squeeze really. The potato salad was similarly far less mustardy and more watery than I'm familiar with from both German spots in Europe and the US. The chicken spatzel soup was also very uninspiring. For the prices these should be far better. Overall bumping it up because it's one of the few German spots but come now let's do better. read more

I'm so glad that Leopold's reopened after being closed for a few years because it is one of the best places to get authentic German food in the city. Aside from really good food, all the staff is very nice. I highly recommend the schnitzel or the goulash. Also, it is essential to get a Bavarian pretzel to start. Personally, I don't like beer, but don't worry they have ciders and wine if you prefer that over beer.
