The thoke sone salad still lingers in my mind--perfectly seasoned with a beautiful marriage of flavors. We got the egg parata with condensed milk, thoke sone, chicken biryani, and the coconut noodle. The winners were the parata and thoke sone. The rest were solid but nothing mind-blowing. Will have to try their tea next time. This place is so reasonably priced for the quantity and quality. Can't wait to go back. Service is quick and thoughtful despite only one waiter for the entire establishment when we visited. It's a no-frills, focus-is-the-food type of restaurant. There are not a ton of Burmese restaurants out there, but this one was the real deal. The region is a crossroads, and the menu at such restaurants is always dynamic, with dishes redolent of neighboring countries including China, India, and various parts of Southeast Asia. Here, I ordered one dish that felt a bit Indian (a flatbread with chickpea filling), and a chef's special tofu dish that was pan seared with large vegetables and a lemongrass sauce in a style that seemed more Malaysian to me. The tea leaf salad that I ordered is a distinctively Burmese special. I've seen several different versions of their menu posted online. Their vegetarian options have expanded a bit it seems, but oddly, the menu I got on arriving did not clarify what my options were in that regard. Ultimately, requesting the salad without shrimp was a good solution. I also had to ask what drinks were available, and ended up with tea. All of my food was aromatic and possessed an intoxicating mix of tastes and textures, from the mouthwatering fried onions garnishing my bread, to the jasmine rice doused in lemongrass sauce, to the crunchy beans and seeds that add an extra element of texture to Burmese salads. The space was next to the university, and nicely decorated enough to want to eat in. For those that have not tried Burmese cuisine before, I highly recommend it. read more

Absolutely delectable food here at Road to Myanmar. We ordered three dishes but they were so tasty that I forgot to take a pic of the other two. Southeast Asia is a complex region with 11 different countries, but I've loved the food from every region I've tried so far: Cambodian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thailand and now - Myanmar. Myanmar was formerly known as Burma, and Chapel Hill is home to a good-sized Burmese population. Road to Myanmar is the only Burmese restaurant in North Carolina. Anyway - the main point is that damn - the food is amazing: coconut, lemongrass, Thai basil - just tons of beautiful flavors in a lovely, peaceful environment with warm and friendly staff. I worry about Franklin Street restaurants because, even if they are excellent, they can go under due to the student drop-off over the summer. No business means no restaurant. Please go support them. Their prices are reasonable, their health rating excellent, and their food is outstanding. read more

Not sure why this restaurant's overall rating isn't higher - my family and I had a fantastic experience. We went for lunch around 2pm on a Saturday and our server was attentive & kind, and our food was delivered fast. My family has roots in Burma and they could attest this tasted truly authentic to the region they were familiar with. Definitely try the "coconut soup" also known as Ohn No Khao Swe. We also tried the stir fry Burmese noodle which was spicy and delicious. For an appetizer, we had the Burmese tofu (not the tofu most people know - definitely recommend you give it a try!). Relatively new Asian restaurant on Franklin St with a Burmese, Thai and Malaysian menu. The interior has a clean minimalist style with flowers at every table. I decided to try it for lunch. Sorry no lunch specials here. The one waitress was very friendly. When she asked if I wanted mild, medium or spicy I went with spicy. But it wasn't that spicy. I ordered the chicken Pad Ga Pao which is stir fried basil with a fried egg on top along with rice. It was delicious with the ground or diced chicken in a slightly sweet but umami moderately spicy sauce. The stir fry also had onions, green and red bell peppers and fresh slices of cucumbers and tomato on the side. I gave the restaurant at four and would've given it a five if I didn't have to wait 20 to 30 minutes after my meal before I got the check. And then I only got it because I asked for it. And the place wasn't busy, besides me, there was only one other customer and a party of three. So while the service was great, coming in, not so much when I was getting ready to leave. read more

Today, me and my family went to Myanmar Asian Cuisine. I myself, got the beef curry. Unfortunately, my daughter in law got the summer rolls, and that made her as sick as a dog! For my food, I noticed the beef was chewy and fatty, and sometimes tissue popped weirdly. My son in law also got the beef curry, and reported the same thing. My daughter got chicken and rice, and she said the chicken tasted weird. Overall, service was okay, a 3/5, however, there is 18% service tax, making a 12 dollar dish have a 3 dollar tax. The room was nice, with some brick wallpaper, nice jazz playing, and fake flowers hanging. Will say, a real flower was present on the table. The drinking glasses were glass, but the dishes were plastic. I would not go again. read more

We love Burmese food and haven't had it since we moved to NC about 20 years ago. I was so excited to finally see a local Burmese restaurant. We went today and were very disappointed. The menu seemed to be only 1/3-1/2 Burmese. We ordered the paratha with potato curry. The paratha seemed like it was store bought and not homemade. Very oily and not flaky like we remember. The curry was bland and seemed like it had been microwaved (hot and cold in spots). The Burmese noodles were so-so, but just seemed like a weird Pad Thai. A salad we tried I couldn't eat more than a bite of, my wife managed to eat a bit more. Service was very slow even though there were only 3 tables seated. All in all, it was just a very disappointing visit. read more
