The service was poor. We were seated fairly quickly. Sat along time with menus and ordered. Someone was seated after us and served much more quickly and just about finished as our meal came. We ordered for take out. Visiting Dad in Albany with the kids. Everything we ordered was fresh and the tasty! The sushi was so big! Like a brick! But it was tasty and filled everyone up! The salmon loving kids gobbled up all of the food even after saying they weren't really hungry... the mackerel was fresh and tasty too! And the rice in the sushi was delicious! Well seasoned! We already agreed to order again from Unagi on our next visit. Oh we ordered gyoza too. The kids sucked those down real fast too. These are super picky kids. Barely anything left over. I got a Salmon Teriyaki lunch box and it was so good! It came with a California roll, edemame, and miso soup, which made the meal so much more satiating. The service was fast since there were so few people, but great nonetheless. There are really cute seating areas near the windows, so next time I will definitely ask to be seated there. The sushi was very good. They have complex flavors combined with interesting sauces. I got two of the specialty rolls. The out of control was a nice spice level for those who enjoy spicier sushi. The Godzilla was very filling. It had a ton of different fish and was a huge size. Recommend for those who are hungry and don't often feel full with sushi. My only concern is the price. I paid 18.75 and 17.75 for the sushi which was quite expensive. Based on the previous menus posted on Yelp, it seems like the price is increasing even recently. This place was an excellent place to get sushi! We ordered salmon, scallop, striped bass, mackerel, ikura, the salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, and the avocado eel roll. The fish was all decent to good quality, and the flavors were strong. But what really stood out to me about this restaurant was the technique in the sushi making. Rolls were tight with a thin layer of rice (big fan), seaweed was crisp, and there was impressive temperature control (the eel was still warm in the roll- as it should be!). I visited this small gem of a place two weeks before they'll open up the dining room, post-COVID, so there were only two tables for dining in but we got one of them! They do a brisk take out business with the locals so that is a great stamp of approval. Miso soup was very good and the edamame was excellent. Not too long ago I ordered an Unagi Don and Dragon Roll for take out. It was enjoyable as usual, however shortly after I was stricken with severe food poisoning, which lasted for several days. I couldn't sleep because I was constantly in the bathroom, and was utterly exhausted as a result; which meant I missed several days of work as well. I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 because up until this point I loved coming to Unagi; and had been a regular for over a year. After this experience however, if I come back, I'm never ordering anything that requires fresh seafood ever again. read more

Not impressed. First of all, it's a tiny restaurant so one would think that attentiveness would be of the highest quality. I can't begin to tell you how many times our waitress gave us the BS line of "sorry for the wait" when doing anything we asked whether it was more water, another beer, or bringing the dinner order. There weren't even that many people in the restaurant so saying they were busy wasn't a legitimate excuse. The sushi was fine. They've joined the ranks of millions of sushi restaurants that think it's a good idea to put tempura crunch into EVERYTHING. News flash- it isn't. Stop doing it. Sushi doesn't need it and should be good on its own without shoving clumps of crunch into each roll. When we finally gave money to pay for our check, the asinine waiter clearly saw both cash and card attached to the bill and yet he just charged the card. His moronic excuse was "I thought the cash was a tip". I'm sorry what? You thought the $65 dollars was a TIP? You're clearly overvaluing the low quality service you gave to us by A LOT. Yet another example of the sub par experience at Unagi. My boyfriend gave them a tip that I certainly didn't agree with and if it had been me the tip would have reflected the abysmal service received. Tip reflects PERFORMANCE. We had the thai bubble iced tea (tapioca was at the chewy consistency I prefer them at!), the spicy tuna roll and spicy crab roll were delicious, the beef teriyaki and chicken fried rice were very tasty -- everything was a generous portion. I had rather high hopes, reading the other reviews. In retrospect, all the high reviews were more than a year old. The chef politely greeted me as as I sat at the sushi bar, and recommended the uni was just in today. The setting reflected at least some effort: porcelain soy sauce dispensers, real hashi and hashi-oki, not (disposable) waribashi. Although I was at the bar, the booths set up in the windows were very attractive, with a sunken table motif. The blaring television did not add to the atmosphere. As usual, I ordered a couple of rolls and a handful of nigiri, just to focus on the simple items. Walk first, then run. The server was quick and efficient. The taste of the sushi itself was good, although the presentation was mixed (photo), with the nigiri very attractive, and the maki more haphazard. The uni and unagi were very good (hopefully, considering the restaurant name). The thinly sliced sea bass was good, but the color seemed a bit too pink. Unfortunately, the small maki were of lesser quality, with one of the easiest rolls to prepare (spicy salmon) ending up as the most unattractive on the plate. At the time, there were only two patrons in the restaurant for lunch - no excuse for rushed preparation. Unagi Sushi proved worth the trip to Troy, but I was expecting so much more. Service was not good and we waited almost 45mins for an appetizer- spicy mix, sushi and sashimi combo for 2. The other table came later than us ordered two ramen noodles and one stir fry noodles also took the same amount of time as us. We were so frustrated. Then place wasn't even that crowded despite of 1 sushi chef at front counter, 2-3 servers. Had a long lunch there this weekend, and was blown away by their service and their menu. The owner is a true master of sushi from Japan - he and his team have created a menu of sushi that is not just fresh - it is innovative and daring. They also serve dishes such as toro - fatty tuna - that you just won't find at most local sushi places. Their food is LOVELY to look at, exceedingly fresh, and exciting to eat. I got to try the saba (mackerel) which was out last time and it was spectacular; Andy explained that they make their own using a technique he learned from his Master rather buying the pre-pickled stuff like most places. Yelp led me astray on this. Reader, the sushi is bad :( The signature roll I ordered barely had any flavor, and my tuna roll was tough. Worse, the sashimi was of a bland taste and low-end texture. All around unpleasant. I almost NEVER leave sushi on the plate--I'm the type who always has room for another unagi or tamago--but quite a few pieces went uneaten. Disappointing, because I was dyyyyying for sushi. I suspect the winners here are rolls with fried seafood and creamy sauces that don't require the fish to be especially fresh or flavorful. I did like the pickle plate, but not enough to redeem to meal. Reading back through the reviews, I see that this place may have new owners. If that's the case, what a shame. Then we got down to the serious part of our lunch - Sushi for Two. This could easily be Sushi for Four. But we set our minds (and stomachs) to the task and managed to eat every piece on the elegantly arranged plate (see their photos on their website). This is what was included: Sushi for Two 16 Pieces of Sushi, a Spicy Tuna Roll, a California Roll, and a Shrimp Tempura Roll. The sushi was tuna, salmon, fluke, yellowtail, sea bass. It's worth it to pay more for high grade sushi don't fall for the supermarket or buffet sushi. This dish is $50. and we felt it was a value even w/o the Groupon. Higghly recommended and we will be back. Another important observation: This restaurant is within a fifteen minute walk of fifty other places to eat.
