Okay, it must be stated at the start, the ambiance is not the reason to come here. While out in Pasadena with a good friend this past week, the Indian restaurant we had chosen was suddenly closing. As we walked in. Even though the posted hours were later. I won't mention that place, because maybe the food is really good, and we just happened across one waiter who was anxious to close on a slow night. So we walked nine minutes along Colorado, and found Annapurna Grill. Not promising from across the street. However, through the donut-shop-type plate-glass wall, we could see two large parties of people who were Indian. That was a good sign. Sure enough, the food was amazing, and more than made up for the loud television hanging over our heads, and the truck stop diner furniture. I could barely hear the waiter, but hand gestures sufficed while placing our order. Everything was delicious, but the Spinach Dosas were especially so. Creamed spinach and potato filling in a sort of crepe. There were four or five of them on a metal tray that also held three dishes of dipping sauces. All flavorful. One may have been a lentil base, another perhaps green chili, and the third a refreshing raita. We were stuffed when we left, and extremely happy that first place had turned us away. read more

Average food, not one I would revisit. I ordered fried fish and Veg biryani, friends ordered dosas. Fish had too much food color, which is generally toxic. Something the restaurant is probably not aware of. Hopefully they read this and tell me they are using something natural. The food was very good but the service was terrible. We got there at 7 pm and ordered at 7:15. Our food came at 8:30. Our glasses were plastic while every other table had real glasses. You know how I could tell that this restaurant was going to have great-tasting and authentic Indian food? ..by the large amount of Indian folks that I saw eating here. Let's be real, if you go to any ethnic restaurant (Chinese, Ethiopian, Indian, etc.) and they don't have too many people of that ethnicity eating there, you know it's going to be trash. ^Same goes for reviews on Yelp. Had to knock off a star since they had run out of lamb and chicken biryani options, was really looking forward to that. Ended up ordering the egg biryani, chicken tikka masala, and onion kulcha. All were very flavorful and good portion sizes. I didn't have it this time but the other tables were ordering dosas, which looked amazing. I happened to bump into this place because I was staying at Constance. Looking at the Americans inside, I thought this was yet another Indian restaurant with a western twist and no authenticity.. I got a bisi bele bath and my wife got a paneer biryani .. I was not just proved wrong but I turned out to be one of the best tasting Indian restaurant food I have ever had (Sf Bay, La). Service was amazing, the guy who attended us always had a smile and was so very energetic. He didn't tell his name, but anyways I liked the service. The best Indian restaurant(s) in the L.A. area, hands down. Though they are South Indian they serve meat dishes here (unlike the other branch in Culver City which is only vegetarian.) Their masala dosas and other dosas are the best I've eaten in So.Cal. thanks to their excellent South Indian chefs. I recommend any of the dosas which are crisp and large, all of their vegetarian dishes (aloo gobhi, saag paneer, vegetable nowratan -which is a mix of tofu, cauliflower, potatoes, raisins in a creamy curry.) Their chicken and shrimp entrees (butter masala, tandoor chicken tikka and curries are excellent too). There is a South Indian level of spice to most of their entrees, though not the over-sugared curries found in most other Indian restaurants. Service is always very polite and helpful, though slow. The lunch buffet is not the best way to experience their food, since it doesn't have the same quality or variety of dishes from the a la carte menu served at dinner. read more

Annapurna is an amazing find in Pasadena! First of all, the servers are all so kind and very genuine. The vegetable biryani rice, spicy dosa (very thin crisp bread kind of like a crepe with cooked potatoes and delicious chutney sauces are some of our favorites. The tomato chutney has a nice spicy kick to it that we love! Other dishes we love are aloo gobi masala, spicy shrimp with bell peppers, bisi bele rice and garlic naan! The best Indian food I've had in the area! The menu has so many different options, I went with an easy lunch combo tandoori chicken tikka. I won't say much about the chicken because I'm not big on tandoori chicken anyway (I know...why did I order it then? I wanted to try it). My friend got the tandoori paneer, which was awesome!!! All of the sides were super tasty. Compared to other places, the food tasted more fresh and authentic. Authenticity to me, when it comes to Indian food, is the robust flavors and every item has its own unique taste. We fell in love with the dessert that came with the combo. Annapurna is hands down the most delicious, most authentic South Indian / Indian food establishment in Pasadena. The place does not deserve the 3.5 star rating -- this place deserves 5 stars. My husband and I, short of being Indian ourselves, have a whole relationship based off of Indian food (our first date was Indian) and have travelled all over India. This food is soo authentic, which is so hard to find even in Los Angeles. Tonight we got the Andra Chicken Curry (honestly blows even other really good chicken curries from other restaurants out of the water with so much flavor), the Navathran Kurma (delicious yellow coconut and cashew-based veggie curry w the occasional hint of sweet), the Veg Korma Kothu Paratha (this dish is impossible to find, no other restaurant has it, and it's sooo good I always get it), mango lassi and garlic naan. I need to work on my descriptors for food better and my photo taking abilities but this review exists to let the world know this is absolutely a 5 star establishment for taste and authenticity!! My wife and I called in a phone order into this restaurant at around 7:30pm on August 29th. We were told that the food would be ready in a half hour. We went to the restaurant and arrived at 8pm, paid the 52.00 and waited. They first sat us at a four top table and when a family came in, they asked us to move. I sat there waiting for our food until 8:25 only to find that the food had sat there and they forgot about me. Disgusted with the horrible service, I took our food and left for home. Terrible time expectations, terrible service and terrible treatment. The food taste was satisfactory, but the lack of service was not. If you want good service, do not come here. read more

We have been going to this restaurant for years & the service & quality of the food is always top notch. I noticed at the cashiers counter there are tablets for door dash/ grub hub etc. love that they do delivery too!! Our Servers Madhav & Sneha were super attentive & quick to attend to every guests questions / requests. Towards the end of meal they even gave us a complimentary dosa. The food is very good. However, the service is one of the worst I have ever had. Orders my food to go, was told 35 mins, went there 45 mins later and still had to wait 30 mins to get my food. The staff has no clue what good service is. They work at their own slow pace. Would love to eat here regularly, but don't want to wait an hour for my food Everytime. Worst service. i ordered at 7pm and the food came at 8:30pm my 5 year old fell asleep waiting for her poor. When the food finally came we never felt like eating , (the food was not good the chatni was out of order which came with the vada) waiting for such a long time after appetizers and coffee kinda didn't feel like eating the main course. The peopLe who served weren't apologizing for the delay. We asked for the to-go boxes the women whom we requested did not react. It looked more like the place is gives priority to non Indians(country) . I'm not exaggerating the Americans who came 10 minutes late the same order that we ordered( just #1 of the orders was dosa) but they got it before us. They got 3 orders of dosas while they were at middle of their main course. I wanted to order a curry to go but the service and the delay and the ignorance for Indians made us take home nothing but disappointment. Was walking around town while in town for business . Had dinner elsewhere and saw Annapurna and decided to walk in to satisfy my craving for gajrela. They were so busy with take out orders like they almost needed two more people. I waited a good 20-30 minutes to get a little dessert. Annapurna Grill is an Indian restaurant you go to when you want to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Especially if your only taste of Indian food is thru buffets where you end up only eating chicken tikka masala and, tandoori chicken and naan bread. Guilty! My fiancé and I ordered the medu vada, the chicken biryani, and the 2 set dosas and chicken curry combo. The medu vada is like a crispy, savory donut made out of lentil. It has a "bite" to it with pieces of ginger in the batter. It's served with a coconut cashew chutney that has this nice, creamy yogurt consistency. It's also served with sambar which is this curried lentil stew. Yum! My set dosas and chicken combo was fantastic! Upon hearing that I was allergic to cashews, they remade my original curry just to make sure there were no traces of cashew in it. My chicken curry was a spicy, orangey-red curry that had a sweet herb (sweet mint? Basil?). The set dosas were like these nice, spongey pancakes that was perfect for scooping up curry. I did notice that these set dosas are different than their specialty dosas which are much thinner. My fiancé thoroughly enjoyed his chicken biryani. He said it was very flavorful and full of great spices. It was more on the spicier side (his palate can handle mild to medium at best) but said it was just too good to stop eating. It was serviced with this cucumber yogurt sauce that really helped with the heat. The service was excellent and my water never fell below halfway. I also appreciated how serious they took my food allergy and willingness to prepare alternative dishes to accommodate me. I can't wait to go back and try one of their crispy dosa dishes! read more

I don't know what to tell them . They are Indians they know difference in veg & non veg but these people don't care for customer sentiments , just makes it easy on them only and collect money. Food is okay however there are many things which made my experience unpleasant. Once i started eating i was asked by the lady who works there to move to a smaller table saying the table is reserved. This is something which i felt very bad because the table wasn't reserved at all. I was there for around 45 minutes at the peak time however no one sat on that table. Secondly they ran out of naan at the peak time of friday lunch buffet and didn't refill it for 15 minutes. For a $15 lunch buffet this kind of service is not desirable. Annapurna Grill, you're the dosa master of Pasadena - hands down! This place is an absolute must if you love indian food. Our favorites are Kothamalli Dosa, which has wonderful potatoes inside, with a side of delicious cilantro sauce. The chicken tikka, while being a classic, still remain one of our favorites, with its clean flavors and balanced heat. I feel pretty confident that a blind pick from the menu will leave you very happy with the food. Everything seems spot on! This is not americanized indian food, but real southern indian cuisine that brings you clean flavors without the pretentious fuzz. The staff is very friendly and courteous, and food comes out in a timely manner, even though they have a packed house most of the time. However, the service is not the most efficient and quickest. I hope that they can improve their service a bit, to allow less wait and more efficient ordering (i.e. give menu immediately when customer gets seated, instead of having the customers to ask for it). It tends to get packed by dinner time. Come early, and come prepared for a wonderful meal! read more

The inside of the restaurant is modern, but nothing fancy. It's akin to a fast casual restaurant vibe, like the inside of a Veggie Grill without all the orange. The food here is tasty, especially the chicken tikka masala; and the prices are decent, about $10 a dish for dinner and that includes rice but not naan. The service here is attentive. There's a team of waiters to cater to your needs, but they're a little awkward. It's all good though. They seem sweet. Overall, a fun place for a quick meal. The person who answered the phone assures us there is everything except rava dosa. We drive for an hour and ofcourse when we reach there they inform us they dont serve a la carte and it is only dosa. Dosas were ok but chutneys was below mediocre and sambhar was watery and tastess. Definitely not visiting again . read more

This one star is only for the food otherwise I wouldn't even have given this. We entered the restaurant at 9:14pm on a Sunday night and got a really bad welcome at the entrance. The guy on the entrance din't wanted to make us sit for dinner and said that they don't take walk-in after 9 since they have to clean because they will be closed on Monday. We showed him that the restaurant time mentioned on google and yelp is 9:45 pm and we will order quick and eat and leave and he made a really bad face and it was clear that he did not wanted us to sit but he said sit anywhere. Then we ordered the food and ate quickly and left by 9:40pm. We were unattended and disrespected like we were eating for free. This was a very bad experience and I would suggest them to update time on google if they don't want people to come after 9pm!!! read more
