The bacon was a little chewy, but it was thick bacon. Tons of onion, which is good for me cause I like onions. I thought it was a tad spendy, but I knew that going in. Fries: I just got the house fries (and they have a lot to choose from), they were pretty good, not overly salty, taste a hint of seasoning. Service: the service started out good, and yes I'm dining alone, and near the end I just felt pressured to finish fast and get out of there instead of taking my time, so instead of finishing my food i ended up taking it home, I didn't liked that. But my waiter was good at filling my water glass the whole time, I didn't sit long before my order was taken, food came out fast. Overall: the food was awesome, I was not a fan of the service. My husband and I had breakfast here over Mother's Day weekend. It was a short wait to be seated and to get our food. Everything tasted great! We had an omelette and the cowboy Benedict with the potato cakes. And we really love their spicy Bloody Mary's. This is one of our favorite spots and would definitely recommend! My husband, mom, daughter and myself had breakfast at Annette's Westgate this morning. We were excited as people often rave about it, but unfortunately we left feeling rather disappointed! I will say our service was fine. It's fast, and all of the employees were friendly and helpful. Our food was another matter. I'm sad that it was so disappointing! My husband and I wanted to try a couple of different things so we decided to share. We got charged an extra 3.00 for sharing even though we ordered extra sides. I understand (sort of) charging to split a plate if the restaurant is worried about losing out on money because people are choosing to share, but 3.00 to split a plate seems like a lot, especially considering we did order extra food as well. I guess it says somewhere on the menu that there is an extra charge, but it was not conspicuous on the menu and the waitress never mentioned the extra charge. We ordered French toast sticks for our 4 year old and they were by far the best part of the breakfast (and the cheapest). We also ordered the "awesome smothered biscuits and gravy." This was 16.99 and then 3.00 for slipping making it a 20.00 breakfast. In my opinion, if you're lying that much for a breakfast it should be pretty good. It came out just barely warm. The chicken appeared to be frozen breaded chicken strips and the gravy was mediocre. My husband said it reminded him of the gravy at Carl's Jr. . The biscuits were very good and I would say that I'd order them plain to take home for shortcake or my own gravy. Thick and fluffy and not dried out. We ordered a pancake on the side- it was about 1cm thick, cold, and so rubbery I could barely cut it. Do not order pancakes from here- what a waste. The country potatoes were hot, but had ZERO seasoning on them- no salt, no pepper, no nothing. My mom got the potato pancakes with her hobo scramble and we all agreed they were good, and the best part of her breakfast as well. So while some things were okay, others I would consider calling them subpar too generous. I think consistency in the quality of the menu in a restaurant is what earns them a high rating, and this was anything but that. On another note- the women's restroom was so dirty. I couldn't tell if the toilet seat was dirty or stained or what! Before I sat I looked harder and noticed that the finish was coming off making it appear to be very dirty- and the seat was cracked and glued back together! I don't think toilet seats are too expensive- they probably cost about as much as my breakfast... so, maybe buy a new one? read more

I love/hate this place! The hate comes from the same place the love does: huge, delicious portions! I could eat here every single day but then I'd have to buy new clothes... Every time I sit down at this restaurant I can hear the seams of my pants begging me to leave. Even healthy options like the Cobb salad are massive (just like my bum is going to be if I don't stop eating here)! I've encountered the wait issue other Yelpers mention but I've never experience bad food or service. The staff is always polite and attentive; the owner is constantly present and available. Had my very small after wedding brunch here. Reserved days ahead. They had it written down on a piece of paper with no bother of looking. They crammed us in between a bunch of people. Took our order after 20 minutes. Didn't check on us even once. Then finally got our food 45 minutes later. Had to hunt down someone for our check. My daughter was craving clam chowder all week so I'm so glad I found this gem outside of Salem. This place is super cute and seems like a lot of locals go there. And people with their appetite as their portions are pretty substantial. I knew i didn't want something heavy as I had a long drive back to Portland so I opted for the bottomless salad bar ($13.99). It comes with soup and garlic bread(2). My waiter asked if I wanted the soup and I politely said no. He said he would get my daughter the soup (that norm comes with my salad) and i'd just have the salad if that was alright with me. Of course! That saved me from ordering her a soup as that's all she wanted! Now that's a conscientious waiter! I did try the soup when it came and it was beyond delicious. I was informed they were local clams. Very meaty and huge, and the bowl was pretty big in itself. So good! I ogled over the dessert display and would buy everything if I could but my waistline would hate me so I skipped out. Big mistake. I also saw a hamburger pass me by. Super huge that the 2 next to me split it. The staff are also very friendly and attentive. I did go on a Thursday around 1:30pm and it wasn't too busy. Went here yesterday (could not check in due to coverage for some reason) and was most pleased with the service and quality of food. I had the Chcken Fried Chicken Breakfast with Hashbrowns, Eggs And Gravy with English Muffin. All cooked to perfection and the waitress was perhaps one of the best I had been served by. The most fantastic place, well, behind Word of Mouth, which will always be #1 for me. Annette's: The wait staff were attentive, accommodating and patient. The place was clean and orderly. We sat in the bar area for breakfast. It was quiet and such a nice atmosphere. This place is not inexpensive but their meals are huge and all made fresh, so definitely worth the money. My husband had chicken fried steak (4 oz.) which took up most of the plate it was so huge. He had their potato cakes which I highly recommend. They're unlike anything you've had before. The gravy on the steak was fresh, house-made and flavorful. Our friend had French toast which was huge and also took up most of his plate. His bacon was thick and very tasty. I had eggs, hash browns and toast. I know this sounds like a very plain simple order but even this they made amazing. Highly recommend this place. Wonderful food. It was way too hot in there, I was sweating the whole meal. Waitress was the "drop and run" kind. I couldn't get a word in to her before she was gone. My husband and I were here this morning and pleasantly surprised by how good breakfast was and we had a pretty easy time here. Let me see if I can break it down: Access, parking, service: We went at around 8:30 am, Saturday morning. It was awesome that we managed to find a parking space relatively close and that the bar had several seating options when we entered. I haven't been into the main restaurant side, so can't speak to how the experience is there. Our server was very attentive and made sure we had drinks, waters, etc. at all times. Drinks: We both had a Bloody Mary, medium spice (which is their default). It was tasty and very strong, with plenty of flair (pepperoncini, pickled asparagus, etc.) and salted rim. Yum. Food: My husband originally had his heart set on a breakfast burrito, but when we got there and he saw the oysters, he changed his mind. I had heard about Annette's massive portions, and I wanted the smallest breakfast option possible, so I got the two egg breakfast (two eggs, choice of potatoes and toast). Food came out quickly and hot and was well presented. My eggs were perfect. You could tell they were fresh and so much better than at any chain restaurant. The hashbrowns were also great - tender and golden inside and perfectly crispy and browned outside. My only complaint was the toast. It was slightly overdone, possibly a little stale, but still okay. My husband says his toast was perfect, but his side of sausage was a little overdone. Atmosphere: It was great when we first got there, but got louder as the morning progressed because of the college football games that were on. I guess I should be glad they turned off John McCain's fifth funeral when the coverage came on - hell, they were dragging that poor guy from ceremony to ceremony like it was friggin' Weekend At Bernie's. Good experience overall and we'll probably be back, at least for drinks if nothing else. read more

Annette's food is probably a 3.5, but the service and value bump it up to 4 stars. I had dinner at Annette's with my family on Wednesday. As we had a long travel day, we arrived early for dinner, around 5:15. There were already a few tables seated, as well as several people in the bar. This place is not fancy, but it was comfortable. We were approached immediately by a host for drink orders. I went with a local IPA that was fantastic. Once our server arrived, we decided on the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer, opting for toast instead of chips for dipping. This is a large appetizer, we didn't finish it. That being said, it was very good, one of the better versions of this dish I've had. It was creamy, and it was seasoned very well. We all loved it. However, with the large salad bar, plus the enormous portion sizes, I don't think I would order an appetizer on a return trip. You simply get too much food at this place. The salad bar was good, but not great. It has a LOT of ingredients, including a few different types of cheeses, ham, chicken, and some thicker cut bacon. It's very good quality bacon for a salad bar. They also have 3 types of lettuce: iceberg, spring mix, and spinach. There is an array of veggies as well. The dressings were standard, and based on my choice of blue cheese, I couldn't tell if they were housemade or bottled. To eat, I went with the prime rib and fried prawns, and I had the prime rib blackened. I ordered it medium rare and it came out well beyond that. But, the blackening seasoning was good and it was a generous cut of beef. The fried shrimp was good, but the cocktail sauce was fantastic. It was HEAVY on the horseradish, be advised. But, I loved it. This meal is served with your choice of potato, and I went with garlic mashed based on the recommendation of our server. It was a good choice, they were flavorful, not gummy, and still had the skins, which I prefer. I tried one of my son's tater tots and my brother's french fries, they were fine. Not homemade. My brother got the steak sandwich (see picture) which was basically a huge ribeye covering a couple of pieces of toast. It was enormous. No one at my table finished their meal, Annette's certainly gives you good value for your money. Overall, this place isn't serving unforgettable food. It serves the classics, does them well, and give you great value for your money. Additionally, we experienced really good service. I would return on a future trip to Salem. read more

2.5 stars bumped up to 3 thanks to great service. We arrived at 6am (opening time) and were impressed with the number of other people who also showed up early. I ordered the Bus Stop Omelette, and Paul ordered the House Skillet. Both were monstrous in terms of portion size, so much so that we could have easily shared a single dish. The star was definitely the biscuit, which looks like an enormous roll but tastes like a biscuit. Other than that, the food was nothing special. The biggest problem was a general lack of seasoning. Service was very good. Our cups never ran dry, found arrived in a timely manner, and we were able to settle our check quickly. Atmosphere had several pluses and one major minus (the place was freeeeeezing). We liked the music and the casual feel of the place. All and all, an okay experience. read more
