All I needed a trim and get my hair thinned out and Becky did just that! I was able to get an appointment the day before and since it was my first time I wasn't sure which stylist to go to and relied off of the reviews so it was either Sophia and Becky. I figured both were equally good so I just selected Becky (ahem Becky with the good hair). When I arrived I was immediately taken to get my hair washed and couldn't get the hair washers name but props to her! Love when hair salons take the time to treat your scalp to a much needed massage. Becky took the time to trim and thin out my hair layer by layer and was so meticulous about it. Amazing price, used to paying double the price in DC but I knew Genes hair salon had more experience with Asian hair which mine is very coarse and thick, so it was well worth the drive out to Annandale. As soon as I walked into the salon, it felt outdated but I decided to get my hair done anyways. I showed the owner a picture of what I wanted (an all over chocolate brown). She said I needed to get my hair bleached. She and another stylist used a highlighting technique to bleach my hair and my hair turned orange and yellow in some areas. I asked very concerned and she said the bleach is different colors because of the time difference. After washing out the foiled bleach, she puts in an all over color and tells me "even if it burns a little, stay calm" which made me a bit nervous. Anyways, we washed it again and the color looked nothing like the picture. Huge disappointment. My hair looks damaged with few random strips of highlights that is yellow-green (ew). She then gave me a uneven haircut. At this point, I was disappointed beyond words but what made it worse is she charged me $250 for a crappy color and uneven cut. (Although I was quoted $150). Not very knowledgeable about hair. If you want to get a perm or coloring, I'd recommend to go to other places. I have done perm or coloring a few times,every time I did, it did not last longer comparing to other places. If you just go for trim, it is OK to go, but not for any other services. After they messed up my hair few times, I've decided not to go there anymore! The crazy thing is that I was pushed to write a good review by one of them. If they did good, I'd have left a good view. I'm known as one of those people who never cuts her hair. I generally tend to get my hair chopped off every year or even every two years. Asides from Moroccanoil, I rarely put styling products in my hair. Up until this year I didn't even own a blow dryer or straightener. (I have a straightener now, though.) I'm just not too fussy about hair compared to makeup or brow waxing. So, it wasn't surprising when my hair had grown down past my waist. It was time for another haircut! I had my hair cut here in June, based on a referral from a colleague. She had shoulder-length hair and one day came in with a cute pixie cut! Everyone loved her hairstyle! After pouring over pages and pages of Asian-style cuts on Tampopo, Kakimoto Arms, and Rasysa, I picked out three styles that I liked to show the stylist. I called the salon and was able to get a last-minute appointment. I do not speak Korean so I expected the experience to be like something from "Lost in Translation." I showed them the photos and the stylist said, "Shampoo first!" I had my hair wound up in a bun so I let that all down. "Aigoo, so much hair!" She rubber-banded my hair and snipped off a good chunk in one fell swoop. After shampooing, I got in the chair and showed her the reference photos, and she started snipping away. A couple of photos featured bangs. I haven't had bangs since sixth grade (I'm 32 now). So my stylist consulted with me regarding bangs: "Side bang okay?" "Sure." "Side bang look better!" The owner came by to ask where I heard about their salon and I told her that my co-worker from Indonesia recommended them. She knew exactly who I was talking about and flipped through her phone to show me. "Yeah, that's her!" "Ahh, she's so pretty!" "Yes, she is!" When I came to work the following day, people flipped out. After they got over the initial shock of all the hair being gone, they said it was a great cut, and they still can't get over the price I paid. Fast forward six months later. My chin-length cut has now grown to the tops of my shoulders. It's amazing how well it's held up. I just shampoo and go. I might put some of my boyfriend's styling clay on the ends to give it texture. It probably would look better if I took the time to add volume. But that would mean buying a blow dryer. The best part (and I feel I need to type this all in caps): IT ONLY COST $30, excluding tip! I've been accustomed to paying anywhere from $60-85 for hair cuts, so this salon is a gem. I would be happy to return again. Just keep in mind that it's a no-frills salon and you might be better off if you spoke Korean, but I managed just fine with a few reference photos. read more

Got my roots colored and received a free trim. The lady that did my color did not match it at all. I understand it's difficult to find the perfect match, but still... the shade was dark/medium when my color was so much lighter. She could've used a heating cap to help with the shade but I guess she couldn't think of it. In addition, one of the workers started talking crap about me not realizing that I understand Korean. She was saying why did you tell her you're charging her 70 when she has this much hair and crap like that. Does she not have any manners or ettiequte? The lady doing my hair did defend me saying my roots were not long enough so 70 was good, but I was uncomfortable for the remaining hour and half. At some point, I spoke in Korean and that other woman seemed surprised and displeased but that made me not want to go there anymore. Regardless, color was not worth the money. Oh, and the hair cut? I'm pretty picky when it comes to hairstyle and I've been to many Korean places in the area, but she really is the best in the DMV area. I've never gotten a haircut from someone who was very into and detailed as Young Kim. I can tell from her cutting skills and focus that she is very into her craft. She spent longer than my old hair cutter to perfect the haircut in the picture I showed her.
