The service was good but when I asked for a frappe they said they didn't have any blenders so they didn't make any (at a coffee place you would think they would). As soon as I walked it it smelled like cigarette smoke. I guess the place allows indoor smoking? I didn't notice anybody smoking but the smell was there. It didn't smell like it normally does at a coffee place with coffee. The cigarette smell stood out more. And lastly I went to work on some homework so I thought this place would be nice and quiet. I came in on a whim and was impressed! I was debating between the Lavendar and Cajete flavors and asked the barista to pick. He picked the Cajete and prepared it with the cold brew and almond milk and it was amazing. All the reviews on Yelp rave about the Cajete and it is unique! It's not too sweet (not as sweet as a mocha) and was a great add to the cold brew. We also got a regular cold brew sweetened , also delicious. Their coffee is so delicious and I'll certainly be back for more when I want to treat myself. The folks here take good COVID precautions (no more than two guests inside at a time, no indoor dine-in). On the weekends, your best bet to snag a close parking spot and a table is when they first open. There is available seating directly outside and on the side. Studying is not advised on weekends unless you plug in and are not easily distracted by flow of people entering and leaving. It's good place to relax and catch up on your leisure reading, friends or do light emails. Beware if you order your favorite drink, you will get the urge to order again. They have bendy straws. That's worth five stars for sure. The Dote is still my all-time favorite work/read/lounge/meet-up/casual happy hour spot. You can catch me here working, having meetings, catching up with friends over beer and wine, relaxing on the patio with a good book, listening to the random live musical entertainment, sipping teas (I rec blending their flavors) or munching on their sandwiches, homemade granola, and sinful pastries. They still have the kewlest baristas in the barrio - or in Houston for that matter. Garreth is such a sweet heart! For serious. He made this cool design in my latte and that just about made my day. And the owners are such welcoming folks. It's a family-friendly establishment, so if you have kiddos and have been given the stank eye at other cafes, bring 'em to Antidote. You'll find toys, sidewalk chalk, and other neighborhood parents with kiddies in tow. It's also dog-friendly. They're just everyone-friendly. I'm usually in the back, chillin' on one of their vintage couches. But if it's a gorgeous day outside, the patio is equally pleasant. They've got extension cords and outlets, fans and even bug spray. WHO ELSE in Houston does that for their customers? They have cool art, a community bulletin board where you can scope out eccentric events, board games, and they also sell books from local Houston authors. Once upon a time, I referred this place as Antarctic-dote because of the blasting A/C, it was advised to always bring a sweater, but one of the owners finally fixed the vents so that the baristas wouldn't burn up and the patrons not freeze. Since the day Antidote opened, for over a decade I've frequented this coffee shop in my neighborhood. Coffees in the mornings, beer in the evenings, and pastries anytime my sweet tooth got the better of me. Over the years I've become friends with the staff, and enjoyed conversing with them. The good experiences ended today due to a less than pleasant interaction with the woman who I am told manages all the stores under the Antidote umbrella (eg Black Hole, Poison Girl). Often there are people smoking in the seats on the front patio (ignoring a sign prohibiting it... posted along with 30.06 and 30.07 signs). So when the inside tables are full, to avoid the smoke, I'll sit in in a small wooden kids chair near the counter, watching the customers come and go while I sip my coffee. I've seen many people do this, including the owners, without an issue being raised. Today was different. The manager I mentioned above walked in with a delivery. She looked at me, and said pointedly that the table was for children. I smiled, and made a self deprecating comment about my mental age. She repeated her statement, and I realized she wasn't joking around. I told her people sit there all the time, and asked if she was requesting I move. She said yes. Normally, being asked politely to move would not be a problem. This wasn't polite, however, and it bothered me that she was more concerned about someone sitting at the kids table instead of enforcing an ordinance, the violation of which pushed me to sit in a kids chair in the first place. I therefore agreed to move, but sternly requested she enforce the no smoking ordinance so I had a place to sit. She curtly said ok. Several minutes passed as I stood outside with one smoker at the far end of the patio next to the only open table. If it were a normal situation, I would have politely asked the smoker if he would mind not smoking on the patio near the door. However, since I was asked gruffly to move, I felt it was the manager's responsibility to act, not mine. I walked inside and asked her again if she would please enforce the ordinance, and after several minutes she walked outside, made a general announcement that no smoking was allowed on the patio, then returned inside. The smokers remained at the corner of the patio, then two more walked up and sat down next to me and lit up. I got up and walked away. It's well within a business' right to set their own policies (as long as they follow the law in doing so). But please be polite and reasonable - the lack of both cost Antidote a formerly loyal customer today . read more

Only visited this place for the first time, so this may not be indicative of how this place normally is. Having said that, it is true that this place is crawling with bearded hipsters, but I will take bearded hipsters over Affliction wearing douche bags any day. Do Affliction wearing douche bags even go to coffee shops, you ask? They do at a certain Starbucks that's open 24 hours(see other review). Anyway, this place does have cute artsy girls too so the scenery isn't all bad. Oh wait, you probably want to know about the service and the coffee. Coffee does very bad things to me so I am a tea drinker and to my surprise the very nice barista asked me whether I wanted to drink my tea here or to go. I didn't know I had a choice! Also to my surprise, that tea was freshly brewed in a kettle as in REAL tea leaves and not the tea shavings you see in the usual tea bags. Unfortunately, this place is a little out of my way so I can't be a regular but it seems to be a relaxed atmosphere where they leave you alone so you can study without being stared down like a lot of other mom and pop coffee shops who give you the bums rush if it's been more than 20 minutes since your last order. It really did feel like an Austin Coffee Shop in that way. Of course, you're a jerk if you just buy one cup of coffee and stay there all day, but one reason I like Starbucks (except the one with the douche bags) is they welcome sitting and taking your time and a lot of mom and pop shops don't. After coffee groundz closed on a thursday night I was in search of a late night study spot. So I decided to come to Antidote. This place is kind of hard to find so keep your eyes wide open. Once again as a person who does not drink coffee I always look for an alternative and my choice here was Saint Arnold's Root beer. It was my first time having it and it was good! They also have water in cold metal glasses on the side. This place was much more of quiet study setting that I've been used to these last couple of days. People here actually seemed like the were studying or reading not just goofing around. Antidote contains a wide variety of chairs from sofas to sturdy desk chairs. Some chairs looked very modern while others looked right out of the 70s. They provide Free Wi-Fi and I had no problems with my mac here. They also serve beer and wine along with coffee of course. My only grievance is the parking situation, even on an off night, not being busy at all I still had to park on the side street. read more

I found Antidote a few weekends ago when I needed a place to go and do some work on a rainy Saturday afternoon and, feeling the effects of cabin fever, had to get out of my house. I took my laptop, my iPod and headed to this Heights neighborhood to find a comfortable place to work. I walked in and ordered a coffee.....the Mexican Cajeta (caramel) latte seemed to be the answer. Professional barristas (there is an oxymoron! But one I love) made my drink to perfection, in a tall GLASS (NOT paper) and I sat down to start working. Using the free Wi-Fi and jamming to my tunes, I had not only quickly demolished my latte, but looked up and found that two pleasant hours had passed. I decided to order a sandwich (made by Kraftsman Baking Co.) and another coffee. I had a Green Gobbler, which is sliced turkey on a seeded bread with apple butter, lettuce and tomato. MMMM Good. The place feels a bit like a retro flip back in time. I half keep expecting beatnicks to pop out and start playing their hi-fi stereos. If I had black rim glasses and slick back hair, a plaid shirt and skinny jeans, this place is just where I want to hang out. Low slung, arm free 60s style couches and wooden chairs fill the place. My favourite, however, is the benches that line the red brick wall; lined with pillows to make it softer on my phat ahz, I can lean up against the solid wall and work for hours comfortably. The bathrooms are very cool - perhaps the best. Still all cement and brick (hardly high style) the took the time to put a half-panel of tile work in the restrooms that make taking a leak an interesting moment. I like places that have put some thought and concern into the restrooms...because I believe if they think about that, they they are definitely thinking about my food. I finally dragged my happy butt to Antidote a couple of times now (I had been meaning to forever and day ago, but I'm shamefully a creature of habit so I usually stick to Brasil or Starbucks (hey shut up, their wireless and coffee are consistent!)). Located in The Heights, Antidotes does indeed emulate all things Heights-like (if you know what I mean?). No corporate overload feelings here. It's all very whimsical in a very understated way. It's right next door to Kaboom Book which is a beautiful union of things (duh, books and coffee) and a gas station for all your other needs. I mean basically, you could camp out in the parking lot here and it would be like "Survivor Man: The Heights Edition," or maybe not . . . whatever. My first time here, I had a soy latte and some hot green tea - pretty run of the mill. I was able to accomplish a decent amount of work as it was rather calm here with some weirdly singular static guitar plucking music piped in. My second time here, the wonderfully friendly barista suggested I try some chai latte with almond milk concoction (it was far more complex than just latte, but my comprehension of fancy coffee concoctions is pedestrian in nature, so sue me!) as she was sipping such she freshly made for herself. I was intrigued because I had never had a coffee drink with almond milk. Boy oh boy did the barista toil away what seemed like forever, on my one beverage - I can certainly appreciate the seeming fine craftsmanship of my caffeinated beverage. When I finally took my first sip, I would've fallen back in my chair had I not been sitting on the bench. Holy charred spicy! I am not quite sure what that was all about, but it was NOT tasty. I still managed to chock it down because I didn't want to hurt the barista's feelings and I needed my caffeine, darnit! The WiFi here is pretty consistent, the restrooms - way adorable and clean. Although I can't ever characterize this place as "crowded" because all the seating areas are nicely-spaced, the available chairs and benches do fill up on the weekends and holidays. I've never explored the patio or outside seating, but I imagine it can be absolutely charming on one of these gorgeous springy days. read more

It is hard to give any coffee joint that I frequent anything less than five stars because chances are if I return multiple times to the same coffee place, it is for good reason. Antidote is no different. Antidote is a 15 minute walk from my apartment in the Heights, or about a three minute drive. Parking is limited, but the side streets that surround Antidote provide ample opportunity to find a place. The coffee is very fairly priced- $3.25 for an iced single latte. Other places I've paid $5+ for the same deal. There is outdoor seating, which I haven't sat at yet, as I am usually inside on the couch with my laptop. I imagine the seating outdoors is best used during spring time AKA now, and might be best used during the summer in the early morning hours before the heat takes over. Typical patrons seem to be anything from creative types that will draw at their table, to runners getting their coffee fix after a morning run, or to people like me who just want to be on their laptop for a bit. The decor is similar to any you would find at a hip coffee joint- second hand chairs and tables that have been repurposed and exposed brick with art splashed throughout. I wish my boyfriend was an early riser like I am so we could enjoy a cup of coffee together and start our day reading a newspaper or in his case, BBC articles. Maybe one day! Not a fan, unfortunately. I ordered an iced coffee barely looking at the menu because I just figured that was a very normal order. After I paid $5 which I thought was a bit much for iced coffee, I realized it was because it was nitro cold brew. I told the two baristas that I unfortunately didn't like nitro cold brew and just wanted regular iced coffee and they looked at me like I had grown an extra head. They didn't offer to make me anything else or apologize. I'm sure there are other drinks that are great and friendlier staff, but this was just my experience. This place is tough to review because I'm torn between a 2 and a 3 stars. I have nothing against it per se, but it's more of the fact that it really didn't stand out to me, and isn't very memorable. Favorite thing: They have a wide selection of teas! Which is awesome because most places won't have more than 2 or 3 kinds, and most of them, you can find in your local grocery store, but this place has a pretty varied selection! They also sell beer and wine, as well as kombucha, which is like a natural energy drink (so I was told). Not so favorite thing: Small spaces. From the lack of parking to the lack of spaces to sit, it felt a bit cramped and not as welcoming. The place was also really hot and kind of stuffy. There weren't many parking spaces available and so we had to park along the street and walk to the coffee shop. It's right next to a really nice neighborhood, so they've got that going for them, but still, it's not always fun to have to walk a couple of blocks to where you want to go. Price: I guess they're decently priced. It was in the afternoon and we got a beer and a kombucha, both for around $10 total. It's pretty typical pricing anywhere you go. Atmosphere: This is definitely a very hipster place, which if that's who you are, then you'll love it. They have free wifi, so you sit there and listen to the entertaining, (and quite funny, if I'm honest) music, and work on whatever you've got going on. For me, however, the music was a bit louder than expected, so it was harder to tune out as I was studying, but it definitely was entertaining to listen to. Service: The service overall isn't bad, but the guy at the counter didn't seem as friendly as I'm normally used to. I felt rushed and obligated to buy something right then and there before I could find a place to sit down and get settled. Maybe it's a small store, and he didn't really have anywhere else to look, or maybe it's just me being self conscious, or possibly just an off day, but wish the service was a bit friendlier. So I've enjoyed this place for years. I came here when they had a bookshop next door. Today I came in because a few weeks ago I discovered their white chocolate rice crispy espresso snack things and really wanted one, as in I-stood-in-accident-ridden-i-10-traffic-going-2-miles-per-hour-for-half-an-hour wanted one. anyway, i got there and ordered the thing as well a large goats milk caramel iced latte. got charged about $8 and then the guy gives me a small size drink by mistake. So, I'm like, "hey is this a large?" and he gives me some excuse about how he works at another coffee shop, and small is the only size they have over there: That awkward feeling when someone messes up your order and makes you feel the need to be more apologetic than they are. So then he just takes my drink, pours it into a larger cup and ADDS MILK. Yo. Then he gives it back to me, while chatting away with some friend of his, and i kind of give him this look like, "I can't believe you just did this." And he totally ignored me. WHY ON EARTH WOULD I PAY EXTRA FOR SOMEONE TO DILUTE MY DRINK? Pro tip: add espresso, not just milk. Now I feel robbed, and every time I take a sip, I just remember how bad this drink is and how I wasted my money on it. but hey, maybe I'm missing something??? Anyway I would have just written an email, but yelp is the only option available. Do these people even have a website? Will I ever return to this lame place that's totally out of my way? I'm always kind of ambivalent about this place because my experience wavers each time I go there (although I come here often enough). The coffee is fine, if not somewhat average. I like that they don't automatically serve everyone in paper cups. The interior seating is a bit sparse. Parking is mixed. Often you can nab a space out front, but if you can't you have to park on the nearby street. When I love it : *Days that are nice enough that I can sit outside and grab a drink on the patio. Since it's bar was a bit small, but then I saw their space behind the little door - not super huge but sufficient for friends who wanna hang out on a table and sipping their coffee. When I walked in, there was only one barista but a group of customers inside. Magically, line moved pretty fast. I ordered my latte with skim milk to go and grabbed a huge chunk of chocolate marshmallow walnut brownies. My coffee was really good, it was probably one of the best latte with fat-free milk I've every tried. I meant, it's pretty hard for latte to taste extremely good when you asked for skim milk (calorie dilemma?). Their price is the same as Starbucks but their quality is about 15% better, so do the math and enjoy your cup of joe when you are nearby. read more

This is what most say it is: cozy. I walked in for the first time through the wrong door. Just a heads up, there are two doors: one for placing your order and one to find seating. It's nice - it's like they give you a choice of what you want to do first. After ordering my soy latte, I was told they would bring it to me when it was ready. So, I found a seat near an outlet (just in case), and set up my my workspace. As soon as I set up (maybe five minutes), my latte arrived. And, it was perfect - not scalding hot and not lukewarm (I felt my inner Goldilocks awaken...). In the morning, just be careful. There seems to be a lot of trucks and other vending vehicles passing through the area, so it may be difficult to find a parking spot (or depart from your spot if blocked). My advice to you is, come here, if you plan on working in a white noise, good coffee, and great service area for a while. It's been a great morning, and I hope to return later when other coffee-shops near by are stuffed with those who were born while I hit puberty. This place has a nice mature feel to it without feeling too uptight. So cozy - just so cozy. I'm half considering taking a nap on this couch...but I must be mindful of social rules. Funky ambience that reminds me of a coffee house that you typically find sitting next to a large campus. Beat up and comfortable furniture, hip staff, flyers and posters for all things local, and great coffee at reasonable prices. I'm not too adventurous when it comes to coffee: just the basic cup is what I normally get, but for those early morning commutes I've started drinking the Antidote (coffee + espresso shot) like it was crack. It's a great place to just go and hang out, read a book, meet a friend They open at 6:30am so commuters shooting down Studewood can hit it on the way to the Katy Freeway, and they do. The parking lot can be pretty crowded in the AM--then again it's crowded anytime of the day. Plenty of street parking a short walk away, though. read more

What can I say, I think everyone should have a coffee shop where they know you by name, or at least your order. I have been a fan of Antidote since they opened. I tend to need a potent coffee in the mornings, so logically a triple latte will do just fine. They also have great pastries that goes great with that strong latte in the morning. The reasons I love Antidote is coffee is great, the barista staff awesome, and atmosphere relaxing. Feel free to make this your local coffee shop! read more

This is a review for Antidote Coffee. I've been getting my coffee here for about 5 years. Over these 5 years, there's always been one barista that was not friendly. This always caught me by surprise for being our local coffee shop (would expect a more welcoming atmosphere), but hey I chalked it up to having a bad day. You know when you walk in to a shop and 2 people don't even acknowledge you and continue to have their conversation loudly and look at you like an annoyance ? That's been the vibe of this place at times. So, the attitude continues and as a customer I always felt like a bother/chore. The exasperated looks from him never helped (I'm a pretty easy order of iced latte).. he also always made the worst lattes... I definitely have walked in and back out when I saw him working. Anyways , tonight was just the cherry on top. We were getting tacos from the taco truck parked there on tuesdays (highly recommend), and sat at the tables at antidote, (we were just discussing getting some wine- we had just grabbed some beers first from the shop beside), when we were rudely interrupted by him and told us we could not sit there. Not even a "hey you have to buy something to sit there" (which tbh its a Tuesday night , we were outside, and it's empty, so we were really doing no harm to sit there). We did leave and moved a table over to be properly in front of the beer store, but before leaving I did tell him that was unacceptable and I've been a patron for the last 5 years, it wasn't even busy! And we were sitting Outside - not taking up precious air conditioned seats inside. I did tell him I would let others know about my experience (and I will never take any of my friends here anymore), and his response was "good, go ahead"... soo I will never be returning to this coffee shop. They can take their rude attitudes elsewhere. If they want to stay in business, they should consider their staffs' attitude and be a welcoming place. They could learn a thing or two from Slowpokes ... An earlier review mentioned that they are pretentious , and I couldn't agree more! read more

We came here on a weekend afternoon for coffee. Loved the vibe of the place, it felt like sitting in a old friends living room. The coffee was a little stronger than I usually like, but the baked goods were good. I'd come back here just for the ambience! read more
