What is there really to add to the other 275 fantastic reviews and their current solid five star rating? Not much, so I'll keep in short and sweet. Like, nay LOVE, cheese? Antonelli's is a must visit! It's a relatively small store and it is always packed with cheese of course, an assortment of charcuterie, pickled goods, jars of specialty jams and mustard, wine, and people. Despite the craziness, the amazing staff always remains friendly and successfully makes sure each person gets samples of anything they're interested in....and boy oh boy are they generous with the samples! So wonderful! And they even suggest creative pairings. On my most recent visit, they layered a tangy blue with some Cajeta and it was heavenly. A triple cream with Caramelized Onion jam tastes just like French Onion soup! If you don't know about cheeses, they do. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Regional selections and imports, fresh creams and aged, and goat, sheep, and cow's milk. So much to choose from! Our first experience was a virtual (social distancing) cheese tasting with curbside pick-up at the cheese house. It was such a PHENOMENAL experience and real uplifting part of the day. We have been to Antonelli's twice (once in person and once virtually haha) since moving to Austin and it has been a great experience! There was a wide selection of cheeses to choose from and their staff was very knowledgeable. We didn't buy anything except cheese on our first visit but they had a lot of other condiments to purchase and a very nice wine selection! We recently did one of their online cheese tastings from home and it was so much fun! The pairings were DELICIOUS and we definitely plan on doing another one ASAP. This was an absolutely great experience. I went to the chocolate and cheese pairing with my husband and parents as a valentines present. The cheese selection was amazing and the chocolates were expertly chosen according to their flavor. If you like cheese even a little bit, you'll love this experience. The people working here were so knowledgeable and friendly. They really cared about the process and businesses behind each of the products. I want to also say a big thank you for accommodating me in getting only pasteurized cheeses because I'm pregnant. You need to go here if you are visiting Austin. The cheese selection is vast, and you're allowed to try as many samples as you would like and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable. They also have several type of jams, honeys and meats to accompany your cheese assortment. I personally recommend trying their triple cream goat/cow cheese as it is melt in your mouth delicious. The specialty of this place is the service, but if there are a lot of people in the store hovering over the small glass case, it's a lost cause. I called this business to ask about their hours and service during covid. The lady who answered failed to mention they do not have in store shopping and ONLY do curbside. This led me into believing they are open for in store shopping as well, I drive 30 minutes and reach at 5:30, that's when they decide to tell me we are only doing curb side, and I must order online before 5 pm. I request that if they have a piece of certain cheese, I'll just take it since I did not know this and called before I came here. But they refused, too lazy to cut or pack a piece of cheese I guess. Yes, it's about $18 for a fist sized ball but it is SO different than the heretofore purchased cheese. I wandered in there after a lunch at Mothers and bought that (had just arrived) and some chevre. They're both wildly different from each other of course -- but also from the kind I usually pick up in the refrigerated section of HEB. The employees in the shop are super friendly and knowledgeable about the history behind each cheese, and allow you to sample any and all types of cheese before buying. We also went to Bubbles and Brunch, an event hosted by Antonelli's with charcuterie boards and wine tastings on a farm. Antonelli's small storefront packs all types of domestic as well as foreign cheeses for your pleasures--soft and creamy, firm and hard. There are milder varieties, but for the cheese connoisseur, they have a fantastic selection of the most smelly, moldy cheeses. There is a small, but well-chosen charcuterie selection and condiments to complete your meal. On lazy weekends at home, our meals often consist of a charcuterie and cheese platter, seasonal fruits, and bottle of bubbly. My new obsession for summer is pairing a sweet German reisling with a nice stinky Roquefort. The service is here excellent and the price is competitive. I went in for a "cheese 101" course, and i know SO MUCH MORE about cheese!! I now know that the fresher/less aged the cheese, the more I like it. The chèvre was INCREDIBLY fresh - paired with amazing (expensive, but worth it) apricot jam - definitely my favorite on our 7 cheese sampling board. The ladies running the course were SO into cheese, even the most lactose intolerant person would be ready to gorge themselves, to hell with the consequences! Also, that Tasmanian honey? Unbelievable. The cheese instructors told us that basically, the bees are only exposed to flowers from the Leatherwood tree - meaning the honey has a singular, more pronounced flavor. It was floral, delicate, and beautiful. They were understandably sold out when we were there, but I will be back to buy several jars. When you come into the shop/class area, you get a sense of passion, from not only the owners, but all the employees - i cannot WAIT to go to more classes, try more cheese, and feel better about life in general. read more

This shop seems to understand their buyer. There are one of the very few places that keep a record of your last purchase. They also offer free tasting or any of the cheeses they have in stock. Oh, and by hustled, I mean "asked shamelessly for them to please sell us only half of the 2-foot loaf lest we inevitably eat it all" but then we got it for free anyway. No doubt a great place to buy cheese. We were visiting Austin and we wanted to go to Antonelli's because we had seen their ads in tv a lot of times. But our visit was somewhat disappointing. The place is very small and difficult to move around. We wanted to buy some cheese but we did not knew the flow of how to order the cheese. We saw two groups of people that were basically tasting different cheese before deciding which one to buy, and that confused us more of how was the flow of ordering. Located in Hyde Park, this cheese shop offers some pretty amazing cheeses and charcuterie. When I first entered the shop, I was struck by a thick aroma of formage. So thick you could almost chew the air. It was wonderful. The shop is longish and narrow, but even with many patrons its a friendly atmosphere. You go up to the counter and a cheese expert assists you with your selection. You can try any and all the cheeses. They happily endured my poor attempt at explaining cheeses I were interested in. Back in the day when I lived in London, all shops were specialized... went to a butcher's shop for your meat, then down to the grocery store for your veg and fruit, over to the bakery for your breads and cakes and finally fromage... All of these experiences were just a walk down the street from our home on Gloucester Rd. When I walked into Antonelli's, I was immediately transported back in time to the good ol days when shopping was not in a huge HEB. It was a Saturday morning and the place was hopping. We were having a dinner party with a dear English friend who, like me, loves a good cheese board for afters. We weren't sure how it all worked, so we got in line and waited till it was our turn. Upon approaching the counter a bright, happy gal asked us had we been there before. We shook our head and I explained what I was looking to accomplish. She asked what we were having for dinner and then proceeded to take us on a tour of what she felt would pair well. We were able to have tastes of everything she would recommend and made our choices based on what we liked and not what she thought would work. IE, she always gave us a couple of choices. We went from hard cheeses, to soft and finally to an array of Blue Cheese. We selected several different types and tastes for our dinner. They also had some salami's, pate's and breads as well. We choose not to indulge at this point, but it was good to know that they also carry specialty meats. We never felt rushed, even though they were busy. As it is in the US, folks are not used to queuing up for stuff, patience goes a long way people. The price point seemed to be fair for us. The store is clean with crisp lines and well stocked items. First, I have to say I feel betrayed by my Austin friends. When we moved here nearly 2 years ago, I asked everyone I met whether there was a cheese shop to be found. The previous day had been a Snow Day for almost everyone in Central Texas, so Duval Street was thronged with people enjoying the lovely weather. And shopping for cheese. Antonelli's is a small shop. And feels even smaller when filled to overflowing with customers. But we were not going to be deterred since it had taken us so long to find them. We waited patiently in line with many, many others. The line moved slowly, but that was chiefly because the wonderfully patient staff was offering a taste of each cheese as the customer selected it. They were also giving cheerful and knowledgeable advice to cheese novices on what might be to their liking or suit their needs. Amazing. A shop where they believe in customer service! Finally, it was our turn. Oh, joy unbounded! We looked longingly at all the offerings arrayed before us. We asked if there was any hand-dipped ricotta? No. Do you have any bufala mozzarella, we ventured? No. Any St-Marcellin? Er... no. We began to feel a Monty Python moment coming on. However, we made do with burrata. And raclette. Um, and we acquired some gruyere. OK, and some robiola. Oh, and a bottle of Gruner Veltliner to make fondue for Superbowl watching. (And may I just digress and say that using the gruyere from Antonelli's we achieved the most perfect fondue texture. Ever. And we've been making fondue for over 30 years.) We went in on Christmas Eve to pick out a few cheeses for our annual shrimp cocktail and cheese plate 'tizers served on Xmas Eve. It's a family thing. :) The place was bustling, but the line moved smoothly and before we knew it was our turn to sample and pick out some cheeses. John was clearly so appreciative of his customers, saying many times "today is a great day!" as if couldn't believe his luck. We were able to sample several cheeses and they are not stingy with the samples, giving my sister, dad and myself perfect tastings. The problem is, all the cheeses are so damn good it's hard to know when to stop! In the end we walked with three cheeses and some spicy soppressata, all of which went over famously with the fam'! Another five star worthy place in Austin. Seriously, I wouldn't even consider getting cheese anywhere else if I lived there. Great people, great cheese, great shop. read more
